Welcome to one of the most beautiful spots in all of Texas. Welcome to the Highland Lakes. This region of the Texas Hill Country derives its name from the series of beautiful lakes built along the Colorado River basin that stretch from Llano on the north to Austin on the south — Buchanan, Inks, LBJ, Marble Falls and Travis. While these lakes certainly provide an endless source of recreational pursuits from fishing to water skiing during the spring and summer, they can be just as much fun in the fall and winter, thanks to the region’s normally mild weather this time of year. And even when the mercury starts to dip a bit, there is still plenty to do in the Highland Lakes, on and off the water. Christmas is an especially magical time of year here, despite our lack of a traditional snow covered season. Get in the spirit with a visit to the annual Walkway of Lights on the shores of Lake Marble Falls around Christmas, when a holiday-themed village constructed of more than 2 million multi-colored bulbs brightens up the night along the water. Up the road in Burnet, a trip to a re-creation of the village of old Bethlehem reminds visitors what the season is really all about.

As you drive into Marble Falls from the south on U.S. 281, you’ll catch your breath when you top the hill and see the grand glitter of twinkling lights on the lake below. On site, you can sip a cup of hot chocolate or grab a snack. The Walkway of Lights flips the switch at 6 p.m. Nov. 16, then gleams nightly until 10 p.m. through Jan. 1. Holiday parade of lights, Nov. 16 — What better way to kick off the annual Walkway of Lights on Lake Marble Falls than with a parade, followed by the ceremonial flipping of the switch to turn on the twinkle! The parade starts 5:30 p.m. Nov. 16 on Main Street with holiday floats and music meandering through downtown Main Street. The parade ends at the entrance to the Walkway of Lights

at Lakeside Park, 307 Buena Vista Drive. When everyone is gathered at the entrance, a special guest flips the switch that brings more than 2 million lights to life in Lakeside Park.

Burnet Enjoy old Bethlehem, Dec. 7-9 and Dec. 14-16 — One of the most anticipated events of the Christmas season, Main Street Bethlehem is sponsored by First Baptist Church of Burnet. During the first and second weekends in December, church members and other volunteers don period costumes and bring Bethlehem to life in Burnet. This isn’t just a couple of sheep and some wise men standing around. It’s a life-size replica of Bethlehem at the time of Christ’s birth including street vendors, craftspeople, shepherds and Mary and Joseph. The church is located at 108 S. Fort Croghan remembers Christmas, Dec. 8 — Experience a pioneer Christmas in Burnet. Before the town of Burnet was settled, the Army’s Fort Croghan provided shelter and protection to pioneers. The settlers also celebrated Christmas there. On Dec. 8, volunteers re-enact those Christmases at Fort Croghan. The houses within the fort at 703 Buchanan Drive (also Texas 29 West) just west of U.S. 281, come to life with the Christmas spirit as re-enactors decorate with lanterns, candles and luminaries. Presidential ranch celebrates the season, Dec. 16 — The annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Evening Ranch Tours at the Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site have been a Hill Country tradition for 43 years. You and your family can be a part of the holiday event Dec. 16. It’s truly a magical moment when the LBJ ranch Christmas tree lights up. But that’s only part of the evening. FREDERICKSBURG — Once you’ve looked at the planet Saturn through a telescope on a clear, crisp Central Texas winter night, you’ll never be the same, says Jason Fry, president of the Hill Country Astronomers in Fredericksburg. “It’s so spectacular, you’ll think it’s not real,” he says. “That’s the most spectacular thing to look at among the stars.” It’s certainly not the only thing. Fall and winter nights in the Texas Hill Country offer some of the best opportunities for stargazing, says Dawn Davies, outreach chair of the Austin Astronomical Society. “Cooler temperatures make a for a clearer, crisper sky,” she says. “There’s less moisture in the air, less wind, the visibility is much better. They often set up at Enchanted Rock State Park, located on RR 965 in the southwestern portion of Llano County. “The science of it is interesting, but also the spirituality of it too,” says Fry, who is the pastor of Fredericksburg United Methodist Church. “Looking at these objects that are great distances away and realizing how small we are in the universe is a very therapeutic experience for me.” Davies loves both the complexity and the simplicity of it. Do you ollie? — One of the best concrete outdoor skate parks is found in Marble Falls at Yett and Main streets. The Highland Lakes Skate Park Association along with many partners, created the Falls Creek Park Skate Park, which features 12,000 square feet of concrete and granite. Burnet also has a park, located in Wallace Riddell Park just off Texas 29 East and South Rhomberg Street. It’s near the fire station, and yes, the paramedics. Be sure to wear a helmet! Cottonwood Shores on Lake Marble Falls is the latest community to add a skatepark. Give the folks at city hall a call for hours and location at (830) 693-3830.

The Highland Lakes Flyers meet daily—wind and weather permitting—during the early morning hours at Hank Nilsen Field off RR 2545 at 702 Williamette Road, about two miles east of RR 1431 near Kingsland. The club invites Academy of Model Aeronautics members to be guest fliers. They also wel-

come any spectators who want to watch these radio-controlled model aircrafts soar or learn more about the hobby. On Oct. 20, the club will hold its annual Float Fly at Robinson Park in Llano. Pick a pumpkin — A stop at Sweet Berry Farm just outside Marble Falls on FM 1980 offers everything families can do from picking pumpkins to hayrides. It’s great family fun. Sure the name says “Sweet Berry,” but in the fall, the owners turn it into a pumpkin wonderland with all types and sizes of the king of fall vegetables. Along with the pumpkins, you and the

Fall is one of the best times to take a ride along the county roads of the Texas Hill Country, say both Montgomery and Barbutti. “People are always doing the spring thing because of the flowers,” Barbutti says, “but in fall you get the changing colors and fewer people on the routes.” You also get fall temperatures, which average in the 70s—perfect riding weather. December, January and February aren’t bad either with temperatures usually in the 60s. And anyone of just about any fitness level can find a suitable route. “You don’t have to be an expert to get out and enjoy your bike in the Highland Lakes,” Barbutti says “You don’t have to have the perfect bike, and you don’t have to have the perfect gear. tures. In Burnet, you can cut away from the Courthouse Square across U.S. 281 (watch for traffic and wait on the lights) and make your way to the Riverwalk on Hamilton Creek. In Johnson City, you can even walk in the footsteps of President Lyndon B. Johnson at his boyhood home. Go fish — When it comes to fishing, the Highland Lakes has a lot to offer anglers. From the hidden coves of Lake Travis up to the Colorado River coursing through Colorado Bend State Park, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of places to toss in a line. You can even spend a day exploring one of the many rivers that roll through the Hill Country including the Blanco, the Pedernales or the Llano. If you’re new to the area, check with one of the many fishing guides who will gladly take you to the best spots.

Hit the trail — Two topnotch places for hitting the trail are Pedernales Falls State Park east of Johnson City and Inks Lake State Park southwest of Burnet. Pedernales State Park boasts several miles of trails just begging to be explored. The fall and winter temperatures make day hiking even more pleasant. Just be careful along the river. Even a little rain can turn the Pedernales into a rollicking river. The park is found east of Johnson City on FM 2766. Inks Lake State Park with its granite outcroppings has some great places to take in the view. The park offers the Stumpy Hollow Nature Hike during the year, which is led by a certified Master Naturalist. For

more, call the park at (512) 793-2223. You can find the park six miles west of U.S. 281 in Burnet County on Park Road 4. Speaking of granite, you always can head to Enchanted Rock, which offers one of the most unique experiences in Texas. The park has several trails, including one that leads to the top of the outcropping. For more, call the park at (830) 685-3636. The park is located south of Llano and north of Fredericksburg on RR 965. Colorado Bend State Park is home to Gorman Falls and numerous caves. To find the park, go north on U.S. 281 to Lampasas and from the U.S. 281 and U.S. 183 intersection take FM 580 west 24 miles to Bend. Follow the signs to the park entrance. Another great area for a hike is the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge on the eastern edge of Burnet County. The refuge encompasses thousands of protected acres and several hiking trails. A great jumping off point is the Doeskin Ranch on FM 1174 north of RR 1431. For more, visit www.fws.gov/southwest/refuges/texas/balcones. Pedal, baby, pedal — Bicycling is a great way to enjoy the Highland Lakes. One of the great rides for roadies is simply pedaling along portions of Texas 71 between Spicewood and Llano, but be careful — auto traffic can be pretty fast there. Over in the Stonewall area between Johnson City and Fredericksburg, RR 1 is a nice little ride through LBJ state and national parks. Located in Spicewood on CR 414 along the shores of Lake Travis, this park has about 7.5 miles of mostly wooded single track. Another addition to the mountain-biking repertoire of the Highland Lakes is Reveille Peak Ranch, 105 CR 144 in Burnet. The privately-owned ranch includes 62 miles of combined single and double track. Pedernales Falls State Park outside Johnson City also has a nice horse trail for riders. It offers up to 10 miles of trails. Grab some granite — Climbers from across the state make their way to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area for the climbing experience. Become a spelunker— Take a look at the Highland Lakes from an entirely different perspective — from underground. Longhorn Cavern State Park on Park Road 4 in Burnet County features daily guided tours you can easily walk through. It’s rumored outlaw Sam Bass stashed some of his stolen loot among these caverns. If you’re the more adventurous type, check out the Wild Cave Tour at Longhorn Cavern. You’ll see parts of the caverns only a few people have visited. It’s a bit tougher than the walking tour and not recommended for those afraid of tight spaces. The walking tours are typically offered daily while the Wild Cave Tour is on Saturdays and requires reservations. Try the overlook on Park Road 4 in Burnet County just past Longhorn Cavern State Park. Cruise Lake Buchanan — You can enjoy parts of Lake Buchanan and the upper Colorado River that most people never see with a little help from the folks at the Vanishing Texas River Cruise. The Texas Eagle II, a 70-foot, 120-passenger vessel, carries passengers on “the premier ecological tour of Texas.” It features an enclosed all-weather deck plus two observation decks and operates yearround. Because of ongoing drought conditions, the cruise must sometimes alter its route. BURNET — Take a ride on an electric boat, fish without a license (and with free loaner gear), hike, bike, boat or just enjoy the flora and fauna of the beautiful Texas Hill Country. You can do it all at Inks Lake State Park, located on Park Road 4 between Burnet and Marble Falls. It’s just a few miles west of U.S. 281. 36

New hiking trails just opened, winding through granite outcroppings, live oak, cactus, and mesquite along the banks of Inks Lake. The water in Inks, which is a constant-level lake in the Colorado River chain that runs from Buchanan to Bastrop, is what really makes the park special, says Carol Adams, a naturalist at the park. “Having the water in Inks makes for Continued on page 37

Continued from page 36 beautiful vistas when you’re on the trails,” Adams says. “It makes for diverse opportunities for activities, too.” For example, she suggests kayaking for an upper body workout, then hiking the trails for the lower body. You can swim in the warmer months and enjoy the bird-watching and fishing all year around. And if you don’t know how to do any of that, Adams and her fellow rangers can help. Every Friday, you can fish with a ranger on one of the park’s two piers using equipment from the tackle loaner program. And because you’re fishing in a state park, you don’t need a license, Adams says. Check the website at www.tpwd.state.tx.us for times, as they change throughout the year. Also depending on weather and the time of year, electric boat rides around the lake are available for an extra charge. “In December, I do what is called a Jingle

Bell Jaunt on the weekends,” Adams says. “We have hot chocolate at the park store and we get in the boat and go for a cruise. We may even sing a carol or two!” The rangers also offer electric boat sunset cruises, kayaking lessons and tours (including a midnight paddle), and organized hikes and bird-watching with a naturalist. Bird-watching treks are on foot and by boat. Hiking can include lessons in geology or plants and animals, take your pick. The Magic of Murmurations is just one example of a nature hike available at the park. “A murmuration is when black birds and grackles fly into a cove to roost,” Adams says. “Thousands of them come from all directions and they make these patterns in the sky called murmurations, where they all turn at the same time, getting ready to land in the reeds.” Murmurations this fall and winter will be followed by Owl Prowls, another bird-hiking feature dreamed up by this creative, nature-loving ranger. “Fall and winter are the best times to go

for hikes,” Adams says. “We have beautiful colors in winter that are like fall in other parts of country, and the water is so peaceful. When the sun comes out and reflects on beautiful calm, blue water, it is just so tranquil and healing. Who doesn’t need that in the winter?”

Cruise in the wild offers colorful history Vanishing Texas River Cruise gives glimpses of nature, past by Suzanne Freeman

LAKE BUCHANAN — A fledgling bird that fell from its nest normally would not have much of a chance for survival. On a recent weekend, however, a newly rehabilitated Mississippi kite found on a Central Texas job site spread its wings and took flight over Lake Buchanan. As the bird soared toward the tree line, some 70 people on the Vanishing Texas River Cruise snapped photos and cheered. Passengers on a Freedom Flight Cruise are eligible for a chance to release a bird of prey from the boat. The birds are rehabilitated by the Last Chance Forever/Birds of Prey Conservancy in San Antonio, and are regularly freed into the wilds of Lake Buchanan, an area known as the winter home of bald eagles, osprey, red-tailed hawks and horned owls. Captain Shawn Devaney, owner of the 30-year-old cruise operation, says the winter and fall are great times to get out on the lake and take in the beauty, wildlife and history. “The scenes along the river are phenomenal,” he says. “It’s unbelievable.” Although the drought has left the lake too low for the Vanishing Texas River Cruise to chart its regular course along the shoreline, the receding waters have opened up other opportunities. In 1937, when Buchanan Dam blocked the waters of the Colorado River, the town of old Bluffton became a historical footnote on the bottom of the manmade lake. The continuing drought and the demands of downstream rice farmers for water from the lake have exposed the town

and provided an opportunity to look back in time. “You can see the foundation of the old hotel, the school yard, the gristmill, the graveyard — you can even see some of the tombstones,” Devaney says. “We’ve even found wagon wheels out there. It’s a really

interesting area.” While the drought has stopped the fishing and waterfall cruises, the lake still provides fall foliage, abundant wildlife and a walk back in time.

And, yes, you can still see eagles. “One-hundred percent, the eagles are the reason to take a cruise,” Devaney says. “And there are a lot of other migratory birds coming through, too.” Which makes Lake Buchanan a prime place to release rehabilitated birds, says Anthony Pace, a raptor technician at Last Chance Forever/Birds of Prey Conservancy in San Antonio. Since its days as a courthouse, the stone building has served as the town’s hospital, a school and a barbecue restaurant. After being boarded up in the mid1990s, it was later restored by the Blanco County Courthouse Preservation Society. As a Second Empire-style courthouse, the building is noted as “one of the finest examples of courthouse architecture from the late 19th century in Texas” by the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1885-86 by Austin architect Frederick Ernst Ruffini. Blanco County Courthouse, 101 E. Burnet County Courthouse, 220 S. Pierce St. in Burnet — This courthouse was built in 1937 out of locally quarried granite. It was expanded in 1974 with a design by Willis Environmental Engineering of Marble Falls. Burnet County has been home to three courthouses, one in 1854 which burned, another in 1874 and the current building. While you’re at the historic courthouse, take a look toward Washington Street, where you’ll spot another historic county structure — the old county jail. The old jail housed inmates up to the 1970s and now is home to several county offices.

Lampasas County Courthouse, 501 E. Fourth St. in Lampasas — The third-oldest Texas courthouse still in use by a county government, this courthouse was built in 1883. It has been restored to its original glory with reflections of Second Empire and the Italianate styles. The courthouse was designed by famous architect W.C. Dodson and hosts a central clock tower with a Seth Thomas Clock, arched windows and a mansard rook. The clockwork was moved to the first floor for public viewing. The county’s first courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1871. Floodwaters swept away the next building two years later.

Llano County Courthouse, 801 Ford St. in Llano — The current building is the county’s fourth courthouse. It was completed Aug. 1, 1893, after a fire on Jan. 22, 1892, destroyed the previous courthouse. Trimmed in Texas red sandstone, marble and granite, it is one of the few remaining Texas courthouses built before 1900. It was designed by A.O. Watson and Jacob Larmour in the Romanesque Revival style during the “Golden Era” of Texas courthouse construction.

Mason County Courthouse, 201 Fort McKavitt St. in Mason — A Beaux Arts-style building with a center dome and clock

tower, the Mason County courthouse was constructed in 1909. It features gable-front porticoes with two-story doric columns and rusticated stonework with contrasting stone lintels. The courthouse is the third to serve Mason County. It was made after the first building burned in 1877. The second sustained fire damage in 1900.

JOHNSON CITY — In 1999, Texas Hills Vineyard owner Gary Gilstrap had an idea to bring the owners of wineries across the Hill Country together for a meeting to find ways to increase the visibility of their operations. “When I got into the business, there were only, like, 11 of us,” he said. “I said, ‘Bring a bottle of wine and a covered dish, and let’s talk about marketing.’” Out of that get-together, the Texas Hill Country Wineries, an association featuring a self-guided tour of 32 vineyards across the Hill Country, was born. “Some of the old-timers who came to the first meeting didn’t think it would work,” Gilstrap said. “We just continued. Now, we have two full-time people who manage it.” Gilstrap said the scenic beauty and recreational opportunities of the Hill Country combined with the increasing quality of the wine has turned this appellation — or a federally defined region where grapes are grown — into a major draw for enthusiasts. “It’s agritourism at its best,” Gilstrap said. “You don’t have to just do wine; You can do antiquing in-between or picnicking.” Gilstrap said there is no bus tour visiting the different vineyards. In fact, most people take several days, months or even years to visit the assortment of wineries — which feature everything from Gilstrap’s own “Kick-Butt Cab” to Spicewood Vineyards’ pineapple-aroma Chardonnay. “We like to think of a wine trail like a carnival,” he said. “Each winery is like a different ride. Every ride is very unique, and they draw you back on how well you like what they create.” Events, known as “wine trails,” now attract thousands of visitors during the year, Gilstrap said. The most popular draw is “The Holiday Wine Trail,” which allows people to pay a flat fee for several tastings plus an individual ornament at each winery, which they can display on a decorative grapevine wreath, he said. The spirit of cooperation has benefited these diverse wineries — and helps visitors have a unique experience, Gilstrap said.

Exotics give Highland Lakes hunters plenty of options

By Daniel Clifton LLANO — While whitetailed deer are the top game animal in the Highland Lakes, hunters looking to experience something different may want to go a little exotic. Exotic game animals, which include elk, eland, fallow deer, axis buck and scimitar-horned oryx, offer sportsmen and sportswomen something beyond the ordinary. And with Texas leading the nation in exotic hunting operations, the Highland Lakes is a great choice to find a unique trophy. “In some ways it’s not much different than hunting white-tailed deer,” said Anthony Taylor of Three Sticks Outfitters in Llano. “But then there’s a very different feel when you see one of those bull elks come up or spot a nice black buck.” Taylor guides hunters on a 4,800-acre property that features white-tailed deer as well as many exotic animals. The exotic hunting industry basically got its start in Texas during the 1950s when ranches saw an opportunity to import species from overseas for hunters. This occurred during a time when white-tailed populations were either dwindling or just starting to rebound. Under Texas law, the exotic animals belong to the landowner and can be hunted year round. Taylor’s hunts offer plenty of choices when it comes to species, but the most popular is the elk. Though elk is native to the United States, it’s considered an exotic in most of Texas. Due to the size of the ranch where he operates, the herd is typically 120-140 animals, he said. Many of the bulls reach trophy size, he added. “[In early October] they should be starting to bugle for the rut (breeding season),”

Taylor said. “It’s quite a sound to hear when the bulls start bugling.” One of the exciting aspects of elk hunting — whether in the Rocky Mountains or a private Texas ranch — is when a hunter tries to draw in a mature bull by bugling. Using this technique, a hunter or guide mimics a bull elk’s bugle. Another male elk hears that during the rut and searches for the other bull, possibly to challenge him for supremacy and a female’s attention. Along with elk, hunters can select from other species such as the black buck, which features a set of twisted antlers. While trophy hunting is a big part of exotic opportunities, Taylor said species such as the axis and black are also known for the quality of their meat. “And if you get an elk, you’re talking about quite a bit of meat,” he said. FAVORITE WATERHOLES Krause Springs Tucked away in Spicewood, this spring-fed haven will cool you off during the warm Texas winter. This jewel of the Hill Country has been likened to a garden of Eden. The campground and swimming is open year round from 9 a.m. to dusk. Take Texas 71 to Spicewood and turn north on Spur 191 at Hollingsworth’s Corner. Keep heading north until you see the sign. Hamilton Pool Part of the Balcones Canyonlands Nature Preserve, this pool, collapsed grotto and canyon is an ecologically fragile treasure. In addition to the pool, the park features 32 springs, trails for hikers and more. Prepare to hike a quarter-mile from the parking lot to the pool. Following Texas 71, head east toward Austin, turn south on FM 3238 (Hamilton Pool Road), then follow it for about 13

miles. Look for the sign on the right. The preserve is open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Robinson Park Head over to Llano for the day and dip your toes in the Llano River at Robinson Park. Take RR 152 west from the Llano Courthouse Square for two miles. For information, call the city offices at (325) 247-4158.

The Kingsland Slab Here’s an attraction that’ll bring out swimmers and geologists alike. It looks like a road, it serves as a bridge, but it’s also part of a river. The Slab — formed by a massive outcropping of granite beneath the Llano River — features numerous natural swimming and wading holes. The water moves over the granite and down into nearby Lake LBJ. Take RR 1431 west through Kingsland, then turn west on FM 3404. Follow the road for a couple of miles until you reach the Llano River.

This swimming spot, located at Inks Lake State Park, is one of the state’s most popular. Take a zip - If you want a truly unique experience, visit the great folks at Cypress Valley Canopy Tours in Spicewood. They will have you cruising through the tree tops on their incredible

zip line. You’ll be up in the cypress trees — some of which are more than 100 feet tall — as you feel the rush of air in your face. The tour includes three sky bridges and six zip lines with the longest 350 feet. And don’t worry if you’ve never done this before because the trained guides will show you how to do it. There are a couple options to chose from. There’s the Canopy Tour which is about 90 minutes long. People from 8 to 80 have enjoyed this trip. Then there’s the Canopy Challenge for those who taken the tour and want something a little more adventuresome. The challenge takes about two hours and includes a few faster zip lines. Get in the belly of the Highland Lakes GEOLOGY

Take a look at the Highland Lakes from an entirely different perspective — from within. We’re talking about doing a little caving. Longhorn Cavern State Park on Park Road 4 in Burnet County can get you down and dirty (or not so dirty). The folks at Longhorn Cavern offer daily guided tours that you can easily walk through. It’s rumored that ol’ outlaw Sam Bass stashed some of his stolen loot among these caverns. If you’re a bit of the more adventurous type, check out the Wild Cave Tour at Longhorn Cavern. You’ll get to see parts of the caverns only a few people have visited. It’s a bit tougher than the walking tour and you can’t be afraid of tight spaces. The walking tours are typically offered daily while the Wild Cave Tour is on Saturdays and requires reservations.
