Welcome Welcome to the Mary Poppins Festival, one of Queensland’s many great event experiences here on the Fraser Coast. Locals and visitors alike will enjoy this unique festival which celebrates the art of storytelling for all ages, through exhibitions, public art installations, music concerts and costumed characters. Events like the Mary Poppins Festival are vital to Queensland’s tourism industry, engaging visitors with the locals and the community, and creating memorable experiences. The Palaszczuk Government is proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program, which helps attract visitors, increase expenditure, support jobs and foster community pride. Congratulations to the event organisers and all those involved in delivering the Mary Poppins Festival and I encourage you to take some time to explore the beautiful Fraser Coast. The Hon Kate Jones MP Minister for Tourism and Major Events The art of storytelling is as much a part of Maryborough as our wonderful historic buildings. Each year the Mary Poppins Festival is a celebration of the stories of Maryborough and our many wonderful storytellers, attracting visitors from throughout Queensland and beyond. And as one of the oldest cities in Queensland, Maryborough has many stories to tell. The annual festival had its genesis more than a decade ago when a dedicated group of volunteers from the Proud Marys Association initiated the first event to raise the profile of Maryborough as the birth place of author P.L. Travers. The popularity of this now week-long event celebrating everything Mary Poppins shows the love residents have for our history and our passion to bring those stories to life. This year, as well as the popular Day in the Park, a highlight of 2018 festival week will be a world-first community stage production of P.L. Travers' story, Happy Ever After. There will also be a whimsical outdoor family performance titled, The Magic Banyan Tree and visiting authors, Justin D'Ath, creator of the Extreme Adventure series, and Kate Knapp, writer and illustrator of the Ruby Red Shoes series, will be hosting workshops and storytelling sessions. As you enjoy the festival this year please take the time to listen to the stories and create your own stories to share with friends and family. Cr George Seymour Mayor Fraser Coast Regional Council

UCH WAS THE HOMESPUN WISDOM OF MARY POPPINS, whose creator, P.L

Travers, also knew that a well-told story is a valuable treasure to be kept safe at all costs. And what better place to keep our treasured stories than in a bank? Pay a visit to the statue of everybody’s favourite nanny and you will notice we’ve been sprucing up the building where her creator was born. Originally a branch of the Australian Joint Stock Bank, this grand old building will soon be telling a new story as it is reinvented as an innovative interpretive centre – an exciting, interactive and inspirational celebration of the life and works of P.L. Travers, as well as the new home for the stories and storytellers of Maryborough and the Fraser Coast.

Hosting interactive displays, artists in residence, and a workshop and meeting space, the Story Bank will also be home to a program of creative arts aimed at creative storytelling of all kinds. More than just heritage, stories and storytelling are our future as well. The Story Bank represents a new and magical main street entrance to the beautiful Portside Precinct that hosts the Mary Poppins Festival each year. In growing a strong and vibrant culture and a healthy community, we are not simply witnesses to the story, but part of the story.

We take our stories seriously here in Maryborough, and many of our people are already artisans of the ancient craft of storytelling. The Story Bank will not only be a reservoir for our region’s rich and unique history, it will aim to enhance that history, making it accessible, comprehensible and engaging.

“Whether you live happily ever after depends on you.” – Mary Poppins

2018 Mary Poppins Poetry Literary Competition The Annual Literary Awards competition is for young creative writers and poets residing in the Fraser Coast Region. The competition was established in 1999 to commemorate the writer P.L. Travers, the creator of Mary Poppins who was born in Maryborough, and offers nearly $2,000 in prizes. Organised by the Proud Marys Association and endorsed by the Cherry Tree Foundation, trustees of PL Travers' will trust.

“Something is stirring...”

The former Australian Join Stock Bank on the corner of Kent and Richmond Streets is where Mary Poppins author PL Travers was born in 1899. Fraser Coast Regional Council is working on the restoration of this significant heritage-listed building and a new exciting interpretive centre will open in October 2018. Proudly funded by:

GATAKERS ARTSPACE This exhibition brings together a community of artists whose practices interconnect through a narrative of place, memory and experience. As contemporary visual practioners, there is a shared understanding of the significance of spending time in the studio where ideas are developed and realised. The resulting application of practice to concepts takes place in settings where creative themes and collected materials hold the traces for play, and design, through an intuitive approach to the processes of art-making and storytelling. Meet the Fable Artists David Usher responds to physical, ideological and social landscapes, often making

series of works that reflect a specific place in which Usher has spent time, capturing the colours and imagery of that site. He also constructs social interactions / interventions that entice one to participate or become part of a project. His artworks or outcomes are reflective outcomes of his interest in environments.

Monica Usher has developed oil studies of goldfish, exploring the watery depths of

their habitat. In 2014, Monica moved from Brisbane to Toowoomba and commenced her career as a full time painter. Monica’s most recent exhibition was a showcase of 30 oil paintings “Remnants of a Night Garden” in the Cam Robertson Gallery at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery.

Clairy Laurence is best known for her figurative statuettes, she uses a combination of hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques to give life to her quixotic, spirited characters. Laurence depicts a world occupied by allegory, myth and symbolism, with her ceramic figurines paying a twisted homage to both fetish objects and family heirlooms. Jon Weber is a traditional illustrator and artist from Brisbane, with a penchant for

the dark, fantastical and weird. His work depends on what side of the bed he gets up on and what personality hat fits for the day - he has quite the collection. Weber’s style incorporates everything from children’s book illustrations to comic book art, from abstracts to iconographic illustration.

Belinda Sinclair is an interdisciplinary artist working across print media and sculpture based in Redcliffe. The mythic imagery by Sinclair is inspired by folklore and the landscape. With a passion for allegory and symbolism Sinclair’s world is dark and esoteric, reflecting her feelings and observations of the world around her.

Laurence Usher Ceramics creatives have a significant history of ceramic studio practice in Brisbane dating back to the 1950’s. Whether they work collaboratively or on individual projects, the artists seek to strengthen their visual dialogue with collectors and other artists through their various ranges of functional-ware and exhibiting singular works created for group or solo exhibitions. Selene Cochrane has been a costumier for over 20 years. Her detailed modern and period designs have featured in numerous international productions, including on Broadway. Since retiring Selene has been focusing on her work as a freelance costume designer, maker and artist, with an emphasis on ceramics, realism drawings/paintings and largescale pieces of “handmade wallpaper”.
