27 August –5 October Let Me Be Myself – the life story of Anne Frank Touring exhibition A very special touring exhibition devoted to the life of Anne Frank during the Holocaust Let Me Be Myself: the life story of Anne Frank showcases the young Jewish girl's life and death in Nazi-occupied Europe during World War II, as told through her famous diaries. From the age of 13, Anne documented two years of hiding from the Nazis in a small annex in Amsterdam with seven other people. The group was betrayed, captured and sent to concentration camps, where Anne died. Anne's diaries were later published and Anne became a symbol of the horrors of the Holocaust.

The exhibition features a reproduction of the original diary, photographs of Anne's young life, and other mementos. Apart from the historical remembrance, the exhibition specifically highlights the contemporary relevance of the story of Anne Frank. “This outstanding exhibition depicts the spirited and hopeful nature that has made Anne a role model for young people around the world and shares important lessons about standing strong against prejudice and discrimination. This exhibit is sure to move anyone who takes the time to visit.” Opening Night: Thursday 15 September, 6pm

Exploring various approaches for surface finishing with clay, like raku, pit and smoke firing or glazing, different textures can be created and displayed in unusual forms. The improvisation of clay means every piece created is unique and original. This process is like jazz music that is allowed to evolve into its own form. It can be smooth and beautiful or it can be wild and ugly, depending on spur of the moment decisions.

Valerie McIntosh Beautiful cats are featured in photographs, drawings, oil paintings and other mediums. The McIntosh family crest shows the Scottish wild cat, which ironically is now endangered in part due to feral cats. This exhibition encourages responsible pet ownership and acknowledges the work of the Maryborough Animal Refuge.

Imaginings of the Cosmos Sue McLean This exhibition is an extension of the works Sue has been interested in over the past 10 years. They call on scientific discoveries of the great space telescope and the ever more precise imaging of microscopy.

Profile

A passion for the Fraser Coast’s natural beauty and intrigue in cosmology, has lead Maryborough artist, Sue McLean to create her latest series of works ‘Imaginings of the Cosmos’.

“For me, painting is a way to explore ideas. It is a translation of an idea.”

Artist profile Sue McLean “It is a pleasure to live in Maryborough again and rekindle old friendships, not only with the people, but with Maryborough as a town.”

“We live in a very interesting and diverse area of significant scientific value. I am fascinated by science and find every aspect of cosmology and geology riveting. Imaginings of the Cosmos is a perception of looking through space and through time.” Sue uses brushes, brooms, mops, sponges and experimental objects to apply oil paints, acrylics, watercolours, dyes and other pigments to her enormous canvas. Following exhibitions in Canberra, Brisbane and Gympie, with extensive works for the Brisbane Festival and a residency at the Brisbane Powerhouse, Gataker’s Artspace is now privileged to be Sue’s exhibition venue.
