Errol is reading one of his favourite books. It is The Little Queenslanders’ Alphabet Book. This book is part of the Stories for Little Queenslanders series, which is a fun set of picture books, for children aged up to five, featuring local places, cheeky animals and quirky characters. The books were created to inspire a love of reading in young children and were created exclusively for First 5 Forever by authors and illustrators with a connection to Queensland.

You can borrow a copy of any of these titles from a library branch or alternatively you can find a digital reading here:

Retelling a story and answering questions afterwards is a great skill to practice. It leads to reading comprehension. Children can listen to a story and answer questions about the characters, what the characters say and details about the plot.

Listening to and hearing stories helps children form pictures in their minds and use their own imagination. We are so lucky to live in a coastal region with lots of beautiful beaches. Fraser Coast beaches and the coastline are unique and greatly influenced by K’gari (Fraser Island) and the Great Sandy Strait. While the climate keeps the waters warm, K’gari protects them, making them great for safe swimming and water activities. Why not visit a local beach, have a swim and build a sandcastle too?

Errol’s Tip!

The local beaches are a wonderful place to visit. Be sure to only take photos and memories and leave footprints in the sand. It is important that you don’t remove anything from this unique environment or leave behind rubbish.

Errol Says:

Visit a beach and draw something you saw there. If you can’t get to a beach, use your imagination and draw what you would like to see on a visit to the beach.

Play Activity 18

As we live in a coastal region, there are many piers and jetties to go walking along. You may even like to try fishing.

Did you know that Urangan Pier is one of the longest in Australia? It is currently 880 metres long, however it used to be approximately 1107 metres. The Urangan Pier was used to export sugar, timber and coal up until 1985. Now it is a great spot to go for a walk or to go fishing. If you can’t go to the Urangan Pier, try visiting a jetty or pontoon at Burrum Heads, Toogoom, Maaroom, Scarness or even Torquay.

Errol’s Tip!

Visit the Urangan Pier or a jetty and tell us where and what you saw:

Play Activity 19

Getting outdoors is great fun and here in the Fraser Coast region, there are lots of fun activities to do. Errol loves to get outdoors and play.

Errol’s Tip!

Outdoor play is great for balance and to strengthen muscles controlling fine and gross motor movement. It allows a child to test their physical limits. Outdoor play should be a daily activity for every child.

Tell us the name of a new park you visited and your favourite thing to do outdoors:
As well as playing outdoors, Errol also loves to read outdoors. How about you take a book to read too! Getting outdoors and reading allows children to get fresh air, Vitamin D and explore the natural environment around them. Errol’s Tip!
