“ ”
It is my pleasure to announce that we received a record total of donations during 2023. Thank you to everyone who has supported FCIF through playing in the Alan Greenberg golf event, making a corporate investment, or joining in individual giving. In 2023 FCIF launched our Floor Family Fellows individual giving society resulting in over $130,000 in personal gifts. I invite you to join me in supporting this great cause and spreading the word to those in need.
Chairman of the Board, FCIF
Every day I am reminded of the many obstacles of the human experience, and every day I see the goodness in the world fill in where there is hurt.
Thank you for continuing to give back to the industry though FCIF, but more importantly, remember our foundation when you encounter flooring workers and their family members who are facing tough medical journeys. We are here to help!

The Floor Covering Industry Foundation helps families get back on their feet when battling catastrophic injuries, severe disabilities, or other life-altering medical crises. The 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit assists those who have worked in the floor covering industry by providing direct grants for medical care and other basic needs.
OUR HISTORY
In 1980, the president of the Carpet & Rug Institute was traveling for business and suffered a debilitating stroke. Leaders in the flooring industry wanted a way to help provide for him and his young bride, who were new to Dalton, Georgia, and were just getting started. From this thread of compassion, the Floor Covering Industry Foundation was knit.
The Floor Covering Industry Foundation was chartered in 1981 in Washington D.C., and the Foundation has found homes in Chicago, Illinois and Anaheim, California, before making the journey in 2016 to its current home in Dalton, Georgia, the Carpet Capital of the World. Back in 1981, three of the founding board members were from the major mills: J.B. Maffet, president of World Carpets which is now part of Mohawk; Harry I. Saul, founder of Queen Carpet, now part of Shaw Industries; and Robert E. Shaw, current owner and CEO of Engineered Floors. Larry Nagle, president of N.L. Nagle, Inc. was an original board member and still serves on the board. Nagle, Saul, Walter Guinan, and Al Wahnon drove the formation of the Foundation. As you can see, the organization has at its roots the same leadership that ignited the floor covering industry.

THIS IS MY STORY
I have served on the Board of the FCIF for the past eight years. My favorite part of serving on the Board of the FCIF is that we are provided many of the stories of the people who are helped by the organization. I am excited to be a part of an organization that helps others within the same industry that I am fortunate enough to earn my living. The most rewarding part is to learn about the stories of the people who were unfortunate to undergo a major illness or other misfortune but were able to overcome challenging circumstances because of the assistance that they received from the FCIF.

Despite being born with clubfoot, John pursued a career in flooring. For 32 years, he worked in various roles, from a creeler to a hyster driver and even as a twister maintenance worker. In April 2019, John received a life altering diagnosis, navigating symptoms of debilitating foot numbness and relentless pain. Unable to continue working paired with frequent doctor visits, John’s family faced an immense financial burden. Fortunately, FCIF was able to cover John’s mortgage payments and the cost of his medical care. John shares, “FCIF is like family, they helped save my childhood home and they helped me with the upright brace I needed to provide support and stability to my right foot.”

Alan has been a fighter his entire life. Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at 18 months old, Alan lives with impaired muscle coordination caused by damage to the brain that occurred at birth. Then, in December of 2015, he was diagnosed with Hypertriglyceridemia. His doctor recommended a medical bicycle to help strengthen his muscles and keep his triglyceride levels down. FCIF was able to cover the entire cost of the medical bicycle. His mom, Catalina, who works in a flooring manufacturer in Georgia, shared that the grant “made me have a more positive outlook because I know that there are people who will help.”

I am honored to be a part of the FCIF board and to have the opportunity to help the foundation continue to serve the industry in a way that no other organization does or can. Having written about FCIF for more than a decade, I look forward to being more intimately involved in the organization’s mission.

THIS IS MY STORY
I'm honored to join a board of colleagues who prioritize the greater good and keep us focused on what matters most. Anyone who has been in this business as long as I have will tell you that underneath the focus on revenue and margins, our industry has a ton of heart. The most successful players know we're only as strong as our team, and the FCIF is one of the best vehicles to put that philosophy into action.

Oralia has been battling stage 4 invasive duct cancer of her breast, which has spread to her bones. She’s a fighter though. To help provide for her family, she is still working on the plant floor when she is not traveling out of town for her chemotherapy treatments and taking time off to get her strength back. She has worked for 20 years in the floor coving industry in Dalton, GA, most recently as a creeler. Even with health insurance, she still has large medical bills since some of her treatments are out of network. She is very thankful that industry leaders organized the FCIF, which provided a grant that is bridging her financial gap. FCIF helped cover the cost of her medical care, prescriptions, transportation, and housing. Oralia shared, “It has helped me pay off my medical bills and chemotherapy. Thank you!”

Due to medical obstacles in February 2021, James had a below the knee leg amputation. James now uses a knee immobilizer, and his mobility is very limited. The aftermath of having his leg amputated started to cause financial hardship as he could no longer work as an installer. FCIF was able to provide James with a grant to assist with medical care, household expenses, and transportation costs. James shared, “Without FCIF, I would not have been able to make it. The grant helped my family with household bills, plus gas to and from my doctor appointments, which was 35 miles round trip. I can’t thank FCIF enough for the help they have provided me.”

I’m a first term FCIF board member and just recently joined the Fund Development Committee. Several years ago, my best friend, Dave Gheesling, let me know that he had joined the FCIF Board. At the time, I wasn’t familiar with the organization or its mission. He shared FCIF’s vision with me, and I appreciated its focus on helping people in our industry and included a donation in my annual giving. Shortly after Dave passed away, I was asked if I had an interest in joining the board. Serving is a way both to honor Dave and to give back to an industry that has done so much for my family and me.

Family means everything to Candace as her six children are the love of her life. She was raised by her grandmother in Jamaica, and at the age of 10, Candace moved to the United States. She currently works in the flooring industry as a stacker and creeler. Candace shared, “The Floor Covering Industry Foundation really helped my family as I was going through my cancer treatment. I truly don’t know how we would have made it without their assistance. Having cancer is an overwhelming journey, but the kindness and assistance that FCIF provided has been a blessing.”

HEAR VIC'S STORY!
Vic, a 37 year veteran to the flooring industry, was recently diagnosed with serious complications in his foot which caused him pain and difficulty with walking, along with neuropathy in half of his body. His diagnosis caused him to be out of work, which left his wife as the sole provider for their family. Luckily, FCIF was able to help. Vic shared, “I am thankful for the help of the Floor Covering Industry Foundation, not only did they help get us caught up on our past due mortgage payments, but they also helped with my medical expenses that were accrued due to my medical diagnosis.”

I have been a board member since 2016 and currently serve as the Marketing Committee Chair. I was always taught how important it is to give back, so when I was approached in 2016 to consider joining the board, I jumped at the opportunity. Over the years, the more I’ve learned about FCIF, the more pride I have in being part of such an amazing organization. Knowing that only three industries: Major League Baseball, The Screen Actors Guild, and the floor covering industry, have foundations to ‘take care of their own,’ I am honored to be a part of helping people through an incredibly difficult time in their lives.
