It’s that moment when the house lights go down and the audience erupts: a drumbeat punches through the darkness, and the stage lights – almost blindingly bright at first – reveal a killer band ready to unleash a catalog of classic hits like none other. That familiar snarl of a slide guitar rips open the room, and you know you’re about to experience a bad-to-the-bone icon at his very best.

Originally choreographed in 1959 for New York City Opera, John Butler’s powerful, impassioned masterwork uses the full breadth of Carl Orff’s choral score to explore the melding of classical ballet’s structure with the earthiness of contemporary dance. As the score progresses and changes, so too does the character of this groundbreaking work. Butler’s steps seem intimately tied to the extremes of human emotion, as expressed through movement: rapture and release, torture, and true love, all that may succumb to an overwhelming fear of our own morality.

Doktor Kaboom and The Wheel of Science!

Diamonstein Concert Hall | Tickets: $39, Student/Child: $10 So much science, so little time … Doktor Kaboom is having trouble picking his favorite science demonstrations, so he’s bringing them all! Unfortunately, there are way too many to do in one show. The solution: The Wheel of Science! The good Doktor has built a great, big spinning wheel and labeled it with everything from optical illusions to chemical reactions to a homemade hovercraft, and more! Will he turn a water bottle into a rocket, catapult bananas across the stage, electrocute a pickle or create artificial gravity? Who knows? Spin that wheel!

As the region’s most celebrated musical, educational and entrepreneurial arts organization, the Virginia Symphony

Orchestra continues to challenge expectations and push the boundaries of what an American orchestra can be – even as it approaches its 100th anniversary in 2020.

At the heart of the VSO’s narrative is innovation. In 1991 the VSO made a very bold move in appointing the gifted

young American conductor JoAnn Falletta as its music director. Since then, the orchestra has received national attention for its unique mission serving a home area of 1.7 million across the diverse communities of southeastern Virginia.

As the largest arts performing organization in southeastern Virginia, the VSO and VSO Chorus present more than

150 concerts and events to educate, enlighten and entertain more than 100,000 residents and visitors each year. As it approaches its centennial year, the orchestra and its legions of fans look forward with anticipation as the VSO conducts a worldwide search for its next music director.

Audience Services

The Ferguson Center for the Arts is committed to bringing world-class performers to Hampton Roads and providing easy access to everyone. The Arts for All program is a key component to make that happen. ​​A community where everyone has the opportunity to experience the arts creates a society that is richer in understanding and broader in its appeal.

Funded by the generous donations of businesses and individuals, the program enables every citizen to experience the best the arts have to offer, providing the opportunity to inspire, educate and entertain.

Arts for All accomplishes this on several levels: Underwriting. Contributions help to underwrite the center’s programming as ticket sales account for less than 60 percent of performance costs. Through the generous support of sponsors and donors, this year the center can offer Dance,​ Bravo​​and Family concert series, with subscriptions starting as low as $25.

Access. The program makes available free and discounted tickets to a wide range of community groups, military organizations and students. During the coming season, the center hopes to provide an estimated 3,500 subsidized tickets to these groups. The program also helps pay for services such as open captioning and assisted listening that make the arts accessible to all. Benefiting organizations include Newport News Public Schools, Achievable Dream, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America,​​among ​many o ​ thers.

Education. Funds provided through Arts for All underwrite performances and masterclasses for schoolchildren throughout Hampton Roads, both in the classroom and at the center.

Community Outreach. The program helps to fund lecture-demonstrations, artist residencies and masterclasses, as well as provide internships and volunteer opportunities. Additionally, the center provides ticket vouchers used by community organizations toward their fundraising initiatives.

A​rts for All was established in 2006 to provide discounted tickets to not-for-profit organizations serving children and families who would otherwise be unable to attend. Through the support of Ferguson Enterprises, the Newport News Arts Commission, our sponsors and private donors, the program has greatly expanded to become an integral part of the center’s mission. THIRD-PARTY TICKETS

The Ferguson Center for the Arts strives to make its facilities and performances accessible to all patrons.

This includes parking, seating and other necessary services. If you have questions, a special accommodation or need additional assistance, please contact our ticket office at (757) 594-8752.

There are many unauthorized third parties who may offer tickets to Ferguson Center events for sale. Many of the tickets they sell are fraudulent. The Ferguson Center for the Arts is not responsible for, or in any way obligated by, tickets sold by unauthorized third-party vendors.

Fraudulent tickets purchased from unauthorized third-party vendors will not be honored.

REFUNDS & EXCHANGES There are no refunds. If patrons are unable to attend a performance, they may, based on availability, exchange their tickets for seats to another performance during the current season. Some restrictions may apply. To exchange, tickets must be presented to the Ferguson Center ticket office at least two business days prior to the performance. If the request is filled with tickets of a higher value, the difference will be charged. Lower-priced tickets are not subject to credit or refund.

There is a per-ticket processing fee for exchanges. Series subscribers may exchange tickets up to one hour prior to the performance with no exchange fee. Exchanges are not available for rental events.

LOST OR MISPLACED TICKETS The Ferguson Center ticket office can reprint lost or misplaced tickets prior to the performance. There is a per-ticket replacement fee of $2.

This fee is waived for series subscribers.

The best way to make certain you are purchasing a ticket that will secure a seat for the event you wish to attend is to purchase directly from the Ferguson Center for the Arts at fergusoncenter.org, by phone at (757) 594-8752 or by visiting us in person.

LATE SEATING For the consideration of the artists and our patrons, anyone arriving while a performance is in progress will be seated only at times designated by the artist and their management. Late-arriving patrons will be directed to remain outside the theater until a designated seating time, and may be directed to seats in the rear of the theater until intermission. In addition, management reserves the right to seat late-arriving patrons anywhere in the theater at their discretion for any reason.
