LARRY HOROWITZ
b. 1956
INDEX
After studying at the Art Student’s League, Larry Horowitz received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the State University of New York at Purchase, working with teacher/artists Paul Resika, Nicolas Marsicano, and Tal Streeter. Although he paints en plein air, Larry has a firm grounding in abstract expressionism and modernism through his education with Maxim Bugzester from the Bauhaus and Hans Hoffmann schools, combining both points of view to develop his own unique visual language. After graduation Larry secured a coveted apprenticeship with the illustrious artist Wolf Kahn, serving as a studio assistant from 1978 – 1985. This relationship had a strong influence on his early painting. Horowitz has largely abandoned paintbrushes, preferring the depth and surface texture achieved with a palette knife, but he has been known to use a twig, beach charcoal, packing peanuts and many other unorthodox implements. Larry says he prefers landscape painting because “there are no rules; in order to get to the next level, you have to be willing to destroy what you have painted. Anything you think is precious about a painting is probably holding you back. By destroying it, the artist destroys the old thinking and rebuilding brings in new ideas and concepts.” Although he has studios in upstate New York and on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, Horowitz travels extensively throughout the United States, Canada and Europe in search of new vistas. He has had more than twenty years of solo exhibitions in such widely diverse places as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Canada, Jerusalem, London and Thailand and is represented in the museum collections of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, Provincetown, MA; Southern Methodist University in Texas, and the Yorktown Museum in New York. Larry’s work can also be found in many noteworthy corporate collection including: Zurich Global Energy Ltd., Pfizer Corporation, IBM, Salomon Brothers, Coopers & Lybrand, General Electric, Johnson and Johnson, Fidelity Management Group, and Equitable Life Insurance.
“Art is what you don’t know. We’re all searching for the truth. We’re all searching for what we don’t know.”
