SEPTEMBER

Dear Church,

It is said Ulysses S. Grant gave a friend a fine cigar as an extension of his friendship. Realizing the cigar was a valuable memento, Grant’s friend saved it rather than smoking it. It was handed down to his son who later gave it to his son. Some 70 years later, the man’s grandson decided to smoke the cigar at a public ceremony. He proudly lit up the cigar given to his grandfather by President Grant and puffed away … whereupon the cigar blew up in his face!

Grant had given his friend an exploding cigar as a joke, but it took seven decades for the joke to deliver its punch line.

How many unexploded cigars are lying around us? Maybe they’ve been in the form of ideas and dreams that have come to us in the night that we’ve not explored. When I think of the future, it comes in the form of dreams about all that we could do or be.

I want us to be a viable ministry center for people of all ages who come to this place and find it to be a wholesome, healthy place. I want our groups to see themselves as “agents of change.” I want the outsider to feel a sense of “coming home.” I want us to be a place where dreams and visions are honored and expected.

Let’s make a pact with one another that we’ll make our dreams come true. Let’s light our cigars and take our chances!

With Christ’s hope and love, Dr. Keith Herron

Adult Choir, Orchestra, Youth Choir, & Friendship Singers Rehearsals I’ve lost track of what plan I’m on now: plans B, C, & D are long gone. As you know, resuming regular rehearsals fell by the wayside in August. September is not looking any better at this time. It seems wise to continue as we are doing in alternating Sunday mornings between the Adult Choir and Orchestra in the 8:15am services. We will also hold off on getting back to our old rehearsal schedules. Thank you for your patience. Please do all you can to be safe and to keep others safe. - Pastor Rod

FROM JC to SOUTH DAKOTA and BEYOND Missions Continues through Your Generosity

While the COVID pandemic continues to present challenges for FBCJC’s missional outreach, the work carries on and good things are happening.

A team of seven traveled to Crow Creek Reservation in South Dakota in July to further the church’s involvement in two established partnerships ―- Habitat for Humanity and the Diamond Willows Ministry serving the Crow Creek Sioux tribe. The summer youth programs sponsored by Diamond Willows Ministries were cancelled this year, but a team from FBC was able to work with a Habitat affiliate nearby in renovating an existing house. We anticipate that both South Dakota partnerships will expand in the coming months and years as the pandemic recedes.

Closer to home several teams of volunteers joined with other local churches in the annual Food4Kids program which distributes lunches to young people during the break between summer school and the regular school year. Teams prepared lunches and distributed throughout Jefferson City, offering lunches to children who might not otherwise have a noon meal. More than 20 FBCJC volunteers participated during our assigned week.

The Missions Leadership Team has approved a new partnership with a couple beginning a Christian outreach in the predominately Muslim nation of Tunisia. Though the focus of the partnership is new, our church previously worked with the couple for more than a decade during their service in Kenya.

To add your name to the list of volunteers to be contacted as mission opportunities arise, please contact Rachael Preston at rpreston@mobankers.com or Marlene Medin at medin.marlene@gmail.com.

SEPTEMBER SCHEDULE

MIDWEEK RESUMES SEPTEMBER 1

Refuge Youth Room (2nd Floor)

Masks are required at this time.

September series is RAD. When Jesus was on earth, he had a lot to say about love, but not everyone loved him. Instead, Jesus’ opponents hated him, attacked him, and saw him as extreme — dangerous — revolutionary — a radical. And they had a point! The things Jesus taught about loving God and loving others challenged the status quo and changed the world forever. That’s pretty radical.

In this 4-week series from the book of James, we’ll look at four ways Jesus invites us to love according to his revolutionary example. These ideas might seem simple, but when we choose to listen more than we speak, refuse to play favorites, watch our words, and fight for peace, we’ll see just how radical Jesus’ teachings really are.
