Senior Administrator Changes in Academic Affairs: FSU Chief of Staff, Interim Provost and Dean

Dean of the College of Business and Economics (CBE), has been appointed Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Dr. J. Lee Brown, former Associate Dean of the CBE, has been appointed Interim Dean.

U.S. Department of Defense to Host “Taking the Pentagon to the People” at FSU April 11-12 Since 2003, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) began an initiative to “take the Pentagon’s program to the nation and to the nation’s students” to share information about civilian opportunities with the military. The focus has been to share this information with students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), Asian American and Native American Serving Institutions (ANNAPISIs), and other Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). On April 11-12, DoD will host “Taking the Pentagon to the People” at Fayetteville State University to discuss critical White House initiatives and DoD’s continued support of Presidential Executive Order 13532 “…to advance the development of the Nation’s full potential and to advance equal opportunity in higher education.” Specifically, the objectives are to enhance institutional infrastructure; facilitate planning, development, and use of new technologies; and ensure longterm viability of these institutions as a major resource for the DoD mission. The DoD and prime and small business contractors will provide information about research, development, STEM and human capital, and workforce development activities within the department. AffordableColleges.com released its annual rankings of the 50 best online colleges and Fayetteville State University ranked No. 16. These rankings are based on cost, return on investment, and earning potential after graduation. Within the University of North Carolina System, FSU ranked third out of seven universities following North Carolina State University at No. 13 and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro at No. 14. The Criminal Justice program is one of only two in North Carolina ranked in the Top 50 and the only Historically black college and university (HBCU) in the nation to be recognized. The MBA program is one of only five in NC in the Top 125 and the only HBCU nationwide to be included in the rankings. For the rankings, five categories are considered—student engagement, faculty credentials and training, student services and technology, admissions selectivity, and peer reputation. TopEducationDegrees.org ranks FSU’s Elementary/Early Childhood Education bachelor’s program as one of the best values in its recent rankings. The ranking considers tuition, studentto-faculty ratio, and national recognition. Top Education Degrees’ mission is to provide the facts students need to find the degree program that best suits their personal career goals.

Grants and Outreach FSU Matching Gift from Family Fare Convenience Stores Yields $50,000 for FSU’s College of Business and Economics (CBE): Dr. Lee Barnes, president of Family Fare and nine franchise owners made the grant possible as part of their Shared Purpose Initiative. The other franchise owners include David Wogbedi, a recent CBE graduate, Jennifer Ivey, Kulananda Sharma, Sarah Bordeaux, Naveed Syed, Nadeem Syed, Matthews Varghese, Dorian O’Neal, Alfonso Hurtado, Ron Brewington, and Zubair Syed. The funds will be used in collaboration with funding received from the U.S. Department of Commerce to establish an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hub that will serve as co-working space and training ground for FSU students interested in launching entrepreneurial ventures. The University of North Carolina System Awards $28,284 Grant to Support the FSU Behavioral Health Initiative: To enhance and expand FSU’s behavioral and mental health care services, this grant was funded in response to the 2017 UNC System Behavioral Health Convening that addressed the changing behavioral health and wellness needs for students. At FSU, Student Health Services, the Center for Personal Development, College of Education and School of Nursing collaborated to conduct an assessment and professional development and training and enhance student 2


programming and clinical resources. The overarching goal is to “prevent, manage, and treat concerns that impede students’ academic achievement and improve the overall health and wellness of the FSU campus community,” according to Vinette Gordon, Director of Student Health Services. EDA University Center to Provide Training and Funding Access for Small Businesses: FSU, in partnership with Carolina Small Business Development Fund (CSBDF) has launched a program for emerging entrepreneurs and small business owners entitled Forward Cape Fear. The program is designed to improve access to funding through training and mentorship support programs targeting underrepresented populations in the Fayetteville/Sandhills region including Bladen, Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Robeson, and Sampson Counties. Upon completion of the program entrepreneurs and business will be eligible for microloans in the amount of $500 - $2,500. Existing businesses seeking to expand can qualify for larger working capital loans averaging $25,000 each. Department of Communication, Languages and Cultures in Collaboration with the Arts Council Host Workshop with Jamel Mel City Thornton, Hollywood Director and Producer: Students from nine local high schools along with six FSU students took part in an all-day workshop in February learning film production theory and application, basic television production, and specific skills such as audio, camera, graphics, directing, and more. These students had this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn film and video production skills in the FSU Television Studio and MACLab. Their day concluded with the creation of an FSU recruiting video. Jamel Mel City Thornton is a Hollywood director and producer best known for his work on The Stuff (2017) and Belly (1998).

FSU Faculty on the Move FSU Professor Carole Boston Weatherford Wins Two National Literary Awards Professor Carole Boston Weatherford in the FSU English Department recently won two national literary awards for her recent book entitled Schomburg: The Man Who Built a Library (Candlewick Press). The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) awarded her the annual Golden Kite and Sid Fleischman Awards in the category of Non-Fiction for Younger Readers. From WNDB (We Need Diverse Books), she received the annual Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature in the Young Readers Category. FSU Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship Dr. Caroline Glackin Wins the U.S. Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship’s Teaching Case of the Year Award Dr. Carole Glackin, assistant professor of entrepreneurship in the Department of Management, Marketing & Entrepreneurship recently was honored with the Best Case Award in Minority and Women Entrepreneurship from the Direct Selling Education Foundation for her teaching case, “Traci Lynn Jewelry: Maximizing Shining Opportunities.” As part of the U.S. Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) annual awards program held in Hollywood, CA, these

honors are for “innovative curriculum, thoughtful research and inclusive programming,” according to the 2018 USASBE Awards Chair Megan Matthews of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. T

FSU Faculty Publish in the International Journal of Educational Studies on the Topic of HIV Prevention Faculty and staff from the Department of Government and History and the Department of Sociology collectively authored an article about the results of their study entitled “The Impact of Motivation on Academic Success of Predominantly Black College Students in the North Carolina Public University System.” The authors included from Government and History, Kelisha Graves, program manager; Sigrid Crow, research data and social marketing manager; Tamri Graves, Social Marketing Coordinator; and Dr. Maurice Mongkuo, professor of public administration; and from Sociology, Dr. Nicole Lucas, chair and associate professor. The goal of the study was to determine the types of motivation strategies that could be adopted to enhance retention and graduation rates at predominantly black colleges. Future include implementing strategies gained from the study to at-risk young adults at FSU and in Cumberland County in which the university is located.

FSU Students on the Move Four FSU Students Receive FirstGeneration Scholarships from Thurgood Marshall College Fund and Coca-Cola Foundation

FSU Student Wins CIAA Scholarship Essay Contest Adrianna Seeney, a senior business administration major from Durham (NC), is the Grand Prize Winner of the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Scholarship Essay Contest sponsored by the CIAA, Food Lion, and Coca-Cola. She received a $5,000 scholarship grant and travel expenses to attend the 2018 CIAA Basketball Tournament in Charlotte including $500 travel expenses, hotel accommodations and tournament passes.

Made possible from a $50,000 Donation to FSU from TMCF and Coca-Cola Foundation, four students received the first-generation scholarship. They are: Carlee Davila, sophomore criminal justice major from Fayetteville (NC); Theodore Dudley, freshman accounting major from Elm City (NC); Shalay Pridgen, freshman computer science major from Fayetteville (NC); and Celeste White, freshman nursing major from Fayetteville NC).
