Introduction
C o n s e rvat i o n is a complex discipline that sits at the intersection between biology, ecology and the social and political sciences. We operate in a dynamic environment, where we must remain fleet of foot, learning and responding to lessons as we go. At Fauna & Flora International (FFI) we understand this well, having worked in this challenging field for more than 115 years.
This report seeks to demonstrate the impact of FFI’s conservation work and the changes that our collective efforts have contributed to. It brings together data from across our portfolio of 123 projects3 that were active in 2021 and provides a snapshot of where these projects are on their journeys to achieving effective and lasting conservation. To create this report, the project teams involved in every FFI project that was active during 2021 provided information about what they have done and the changes they have seen in their projects. As well as providing the necessary information to produce the Conservation Report, this process also allows us to keep building on our long-term organisational memory, and creates the environment of continuous learning that is crucial for effective conservation.
3. A project is defined as a set of activities leading towards a meaningful conservation outcome. A project may encompass multiple sites and/or species and employ multiple conservation approaches. A project might be delivered directly by FFI, or in collaboration with partners and other organisations.
