dexter townhomes

{cleveland, oh} The design intend was to create a series of townhomes that had a Japanese influence influence as well as a very modern design for the city of Cleveland. The most dynamic feature was the use of a folded large scale metal siding that created a dynamic and yet simple facade to the building.

in pursuit of housing

{cleveland, oh} The evaluation of the typical Affordable houses in the Cleveland area revealed that the current designs meet the goal of providing "decent, affordable housing," but they usually lack diverse internal spatial arrangements and compelling relationships with exterior spaces. We therefore based our design on a series of subtractions from the typical habitat scheme that can produce positive spatial and environmental characteristics in our reconfigured house scheme. The ‘Green’ House is intended to be used as an urban infill project that would replace old, or obsolete houses within the inner city of Cleveland.

father’s office {los angeles, ca}

Drawing inspiration and continuity from the original Father’s Office in Santa Monica and uniting it with the historic industrial nature of the Helms Bakery Building in Culver CityA 50 foot long bar, which runs the entire length of the room is an essential element to the design of Father’s Office, and proudly features 31 taps of exotic beers from around the world to ensure everybody gets a chance to order quickly and sample their fill. The taps are framed in two glowing amber boxed composed of spectacular wood and a stainless steel face. The back bar then becomes a trophy wall that showcases each unique tap in its glory, and interior walls are then finished in wood panels in a luscious honey color with linear patterns to help create the effect of an elongated space. Some new features of the Culver City location are the community washroom and outdoor patio. The architects at (fer) studio designed a community washroom which acts as a focal space for separate restrooms, with bock beer colored mosaic tiles, a bronze mirror and concrete sink. The lowered wood soffit in the washroom also ties in perfectly with the soffit over the bar area and maintains continuity. The covered outdoor patio allows three direct access points to the main bar. Recessed lighting, heated lamps and the black steel beam canopy are included to blend the outdoor experience seamlessly with the main bar area.

the green building {louisville, ky}

TGB Project rescued a 110 year old building from decades of misuse, resuscitating its structural masonry shell, and infusing it with a modern core, including a 40 foot high lobby, expansive natural lighting, eco-friendly materials, and renewable energy systems. The building's original mortar joint façade remained intact while the 1980's storefront was replaced by an angled, recessed wood and aluminum façade that recedes visually and draws visitors in towards the entryway. A café from James Beard nominated Ton Brothers fronts the East Market Street side and a separate entry draws visitors back along the interior 'street' to the triple height lobby space in the belly of the building. Though the space is long and narrow, natural light and outdoor views flood the interior through an ascending glass spine that bridges all three floors and breaks the roof into three planes. The spine cascades down the backside of the space, providing views to the green roof below. The main gallery below the green roof is home to a digital movie screening room and a monthly-rotating art gallery. The semi-enclosed outdoor courtyard in the rear provides a warm weather event space shaded by trees and a canopy of 90 solar panels cantilevered on the existing roof bar joists. Just outside the courtyard and 225 feet below, a dozen geothermal wells provide renewable energy to the building, and, concealed in the basement, a cylindrical ice storage system freezes during off peak hours and generates cool air at π the normal energy cost. An energy recovery unit is located at the highest and lowest points of the building to capture hot and cold air and redistribute throughout the building. Existing old growth wood members have been blasted with corn husks and planed down for reuse in plain view throughout the building. Because of wide media coverage, developers and GE workers are using TGB and its technology as a source for inspiration in greening their own projects. As the beacon for sustainability and the arts in Louisville, the primary goal of TGB Project is the revitalization of the historic but downtrodden community of East Market. In equal effort to support the local economy, as well as earn points towards LEED certification, TGB relied on local businesses and goods during construction and continues to do so for day-to-day maintenance. Also, many of the items salvaged for recycling were given to local businesses for reuse. With TGB as the hub, other development plans for East Market include a public, 2-acre downtown marketplace with produce and food products from local growers and vendors.
