Partial nitritation/Anammox for a cost effective nitrogen removal from a main stream of municipal wastewater Partial nitritation/Anammox after wastewater pretreatment in the UASB reactor (T= 20-25 °C ): • Integrated fixed film activated sludge (biofilm and activated sludge, IFAS); • NOB suppression by transient anoxia; • On-line instruments for better control. Partial nitritation/Anammox at low N concentrations and temperatures 13-17 °C : • Moving bed biofilm reactor; • Intermittent aeration; • Elevated pH.

Hydrothermal carbonization for sludge nutrient reclamation Mona Arnold, Hanne Wikberg, Johannes Jermakka

• VTT is studying the phosphorus and nitrogen partitioning during sludge HTC • Potential for sludge fertilizer utilization or nutrient separation as clean ionic products • Potential to incorporate into wastewater treatment process directly – increased dewaterability • Technologies for sludge nutrient productization have big potential as nutrient scarcity becomes more imminent • Collaboration: Eg: R3 for Water (FP7 Inno demo)
