ndependent Executive Senior Sales Director Katy Goldstein remembers hosting a Mary Kay party for her cousin.

Katy wasn’t really interested in Mary Kay but

wanted to be supportive. To her surprise, Katy was so impressed with the products, she bought everything she tried. Her cousin also shared the Mary Kay opportunity at the party and the attractive 50 percent earning potential. “I thought maybe I could make a little extra income a month, so I decided to give it a shot. I submitted my Independent Beauty Consultant Agreement on Sept. 1, 2015.”

ONE SCOOP OR TWO? Like many, Katy was already a busy woman in her hometown of Barnhart, Mo. (a St. Louis suburb). She was both a fulltime church worship leader and a college student. “And in what little spare time was left, I worked part time scooping ice cream for extra cash, which I did give up with my new Mary Kay business.” While she admits she had little expectations initially, Katy did heed the advice of her Independent Sales Director and used Mary Kay resources available. They shared the 3+3+3 plan to hold three parties, share the Mary Kay opportunity with three women and have three follow-up appointments. I also aimed to do a Power Start (30 faces in 30 days) every month. I still do that and credit that behavior for achieving the Court of Sharing five times! “From those 30 faces every month, comes new potential team members and future customers. I think sometimes, women work their Mary Kay businesses a few weeks, have initial success and then take a breather. But for me, doing that Power Start over and over without a blip is what really catapulted my business. And I share the Mary Kay opportunity at every party. I don’t want to miss an opportunity to tell others how Mary Kay has helped me change my life.”

After four months of consistently working her business full circle, she earned the use of her first Mary Kay Career Car, and she also became an Independent Sales Director that same month. Four months later, she earned the use of her first pink Cadillac. “When I say consistently, I mean week by week, month by month. My experience is definitely proof that consistency can work!”

K.I.S.S. “I’ve always followed Mary Kay Ash’s advice – Keep It Simple, Sweetie! I believe it’s easy and common to overcomplicate things. And we can confuse potential team members when we do all the talking and don’t listen. I begin very simply with the startup options, then explain how they can earn a little extra income and finally how they can design a Mary Kay business around their lives. I get into specifics like the Great Start Program at a follow-up meeting. “Why they start a Mary Kay business is up to them. A Mary Kay business can fit anyone’s life – that’s the beautiful thing about it.”

2020, A YEAR TO PIVOT Like most, the global pandemic changed Katy’s world and her Mary Kay business overnight. “The Company rallied together; we all got creative and quickly came up with new ways to work our businesses virtually,” says Katy. “In an odd way, the timing for working virtually was a real blessing for me. Our daughter Olivia was born in early March 2020 at the start of the pandemic. I knew I would need help working her schedule around my parties and events. But by moving my business virtual, I was able to walk upstairs to my office in my sweatpants and blouse (nursing bra underneath), hold a Facebook Live party, sell the same amount and get the same number of new team members as before.

CHANGE IS GOOD. While she admits it was an adjustment and required some change learning how to work her business virtually, Katy has continued to work this way for the past two years. “My unit members and I say that today, we really can have it all: work our businesses from home, be there for our children and have a balanced life! “Our unit encompasses all ages, including many in their 60s and 70s. I share with them that I continue to learn, and I will coach them right alongside me. To me, we are like the new Mary Kay pioneers and continue the legacy Mary Kay women started more than 50 years before us. I am sure back then, they were perfecting their words and their parties – things weren’t always perfect. Today, we are learning in real time. Technology moves quickly, and we must be OK with things changing quickly. My experience has been that when you build that trust with your team, they will march on with confidence and success.” Today, Katy holds Facebook Live parties and gets bookings from bookings. “Typically, I send product sample packs ahead of the party, along with a Beauty Book and hostess brochure to make it as close to an in-person party as possible. Guests can watch on their phones or laptops, whatever their preference. I use Company resources such as the digital assets because they are beautiful images and enhance the professionalism of my parties.”

A BIG NET Katy says her unit members and Independent Sales Directors are scattered across the country even more now than before. “Through our virtual businesses, we are truly able to reach out. Currently, I have an Independent Sales Director in Florida and a Sales Director-in-Qualification in Mississippi in my unit. We stay connected by holding weekly virtual unit meetings every Monday with recognition, education, announcements and all. Plus, we hold virtual guest events.”

THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT. Katy says her goal is to continue to learn and to grow her business, and she has laid out a plan targeting Seminar 2023 to debut as an Independent National Sales Director. “I have my benchmark goals, and I’m tracking my progress,” says Katy. “Mary Kay Ash said a tracked number grows. My unit teases me that I’m the queen of the white board. I track received Independent Beauty Consultant Agreements, personal facials, my unit’s facials, you name it, but I don’t get obsessed by the numbers. I think you have to strike a balance and use tracking as a tool for growth.” Katy says she and her family are getting out to enjoy trips to the park as well as dinners out on patios at local establishments. “We are both still involved in worship music at our church. I sing and play the piano, and Jonathan plays drums. “I tell my unit members that Mary Kay is not a sprint, it is a marathon. I did move fast in my business at the start, and I accomplished much. I attribute that to consistency – whether it’s selling or team-building, those small daily actions every day help me maintain a consistent and thriving business over time. Numbers.
