Dear Prospective Parent, Welcome to Father Judge! Thank you for considering us for your son’s high school. As the Director of Admissions, and a proud graduate of the Class of 1988, I invite you to seriously consider us as the educational choice for your son. We have a rich history, cutting-edge academic programs, a college-like campus that compares favorably to many private schools, extracurricular activities and an unmatched Catholic identity to ensure your son’s success in high school and beyond. Your son will enter Father Judge as a young man and leave as a Salesian gentleman. Salesian gentlemen know what behavior is acceptable and unacceptable and strive to live a life exemplifying the virtues of humility, gentleness, optimism and love for God and neighbor. Our patron, St. Francis de Sales, said “Be who you are and be that well.” That quote resonates throughout our buildings and motivates us as teachers, faculty and staff to motivate your son to be the next lawyer, judge, engineer, financial wizard, civil servant or tradesman. As you flip through this book, you will see we have new academic partnerships with some of the best organizations in Philadelphia and existing programs to support and motivate the high achievers, as well as those students who need extra assistance. Our faculty is equipped to provide your son with the learning tools he will need as well as the skills necessary to become a leader in today’s global economy. The faculty at Father Judge consistently works with experts at some of the top local universities in order to distinguish us from other high schools in Philadelphia. Our alumni is the strongest you will find in the entire area and our volunteer Board of Advisors is passionate about raising money to help make a Catholic education more affordable for you and your family. Father Judge High School is not only a great experience, but also a smart investment. It is our mission to give your son more than just an education. No one understands better than us the financial challenges you are faced with, and the sacrifices you have to make, to send your son to Father Judge. That’s why our pledge to you is to give your son the “Judge Experience.” We will take your son from boy to man and provide him with not only an education, but memories and experiences that will last a lifetime. It would be difficult for me to tell you all about Father Judge in this book. Take a peek inside to get a glimpse of our offerings. When you are done reading, I believe visiting our campus personally and speaking with our students, faculty and alumni are the best ways to get to know us. Make a note of the dates listed in the book when we open our home to you. If you have any questions feel free to contact me directly. Mark Gudas ‘88

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A SALESIAN?

The Salesian strives to follow the moral teachings of Jesus as practiced and promoted by our patron, St. Francis De Sales. The Salesian tries to “live Jesus” each day. We have summarized the little virtues of St. Francis and apply them to the life of your son today. As your son goes about his school day at Father Judge he will live the “Salesian Seven.”

• Respect yourself and others

• Recognize your unique gifts and talents

• Be patient with everyone, especially yourself • Be gentle as you go through your day

• Be grateful – appreciate all that life offers

• Be positive – approach life with an optimistic attitude

FATHER BRISSON CENTER FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE The mission of the Father Brisson Center for Academic Excellence is to provide equal opportunities for Catholic education to students of different educational ability levels. All students at Father Judge High School may access the resources of the Brisson Center whenever they may need

The road to academic excellence starts here “I love this school. It is a safe and caring learning environment. The teachers are great, the curriculum is challenging for various levels of students, the athletic program is good, the staff is friendly and professional.” • Anne Carolan, Class of 2018 & 2019 parent

We will challenge your son academically and prepare him for the future. Where will he be five years from now? Will he be a graduate who receives a Navy ROTC Full Scholarship or Naval Academy Full Scholarship? Perhaps he will be the recipient of a full tuition Liberty Scholarship to Drexel University or the winner of a Mayor’s Scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania! The college dreams are endless and we strive day in and day out to make those dreams a reality for you and your son. We offer a variety of electives designed to challenge your son to achieve his academic potential. A minimum class load of six credits is required in each year. The minimum requirements for a diploma from Father Judge High School are 24 credits: Theology 4 credits, English 4 credits, Mathematics 3 credits, Science 3 credits, Social Studies 3 credits, Physical Ed/Health 1credit, Electives 6 credits Advanced Placement (AP) Courses Language & Composition, English Literature, Calculus, European History, American Government & Politics, Physics, Biology

Beyond the classroom “Father Judge made a man out of my son. The schools values, standards, ethics and excellent academics gave John the best high school experience we could have ever asked for. There is a strong sense of family at Father Judge and we are proud to have been part of it.” • Dawn Berner, Class of 2015 parent

additional support in their academics. If your son needs more intensive support, or is experiencing learning difficulties, he may apply to become a program participant. Through full program participation, your son will be provided with the strategies to overcome his learning challenges thus creating a successful academic experience. This program was created to unite the efforts of the student, with those of the teachers and parents, to provide the best possible academic environment for success. Unlike most schools with similar programs, the Brisson Center is at no additional cost to your tuition.

Features of the Brisson Center For all students at Father Judge:

For program participants:

• Access to the Brisson Center and it’s faculty who will work with students to provide academic support and help students achieve their academic goals. • After-school study sessions (Monday-Thursday). • Testing accommodations for students who may qualify (For example: extended test time, alternate test taking strategies, or an alternative testing environment). • Free tutoring when needed. • Alternative setting for completing assignments.

• Daily access to the Brisson Center and its faculty who will directly work with each student to help them reach their academic goals. • Daily access to the Brisson Center faculty who will meet directly with each student on a regular basis to ensure that they are reaching their self-established goals. • Assigned to Enrichment class in the Fr. Brisson Center instead of a traditional study hall. • Participation in Enrichment: a more structured study hall setting that provides academic supports on Monday-Wednesday-Friday. • Participation in Study Skills (i.e. Learning Strategies) on Tuesday -Thursday. • Evaluation of academic behaviors and/or skills. • Testing accommodations (For example: extended test time, alternate test taking strategies, or an alternative testing environment). • Goal setting. • Furthering support for students in the Knight’s Program.

We want your son to be more than a “9:00 to 5:00” student. As part of our Christian Service initiative, your son will be entrenched in the community providing services and sustaining relationships with those in need. Rooted in the spiritual vision of our Patron, St. Francis de Sales, your son will live his Salesian education through his actions with others. He will learn respect for himself and others while recognizing his unique gifts and talents. Your son will learn the importance of patience and gentleness. He will be grateful, positive and confident. Your son could be the student-organizer for Coats for Chester, our winter clothing drive or be the lead person responsible for encouraging donations for Operation Santa Claus, the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. Maybe your son is reserved and would rather lend a hand with our fall cook-in to create meals for the homebound or would rather distribute meals at the St. Francis Inn Soup Kitchen. Does he have moves like Jagger or play like Mike? If so, maybe he would like to participate in the Judge Dance Thon for Autism Research or take his class to the Fox Gym to play in the Basketball Marathon for Leukemia Lymphoma Society. The possibilities are

to partner with the following organizations and expand our on-campus offerings to further propel your son to academic success. SETTLEMENT MUSIC SCHOOL

The largest community school of the arts in the United States offers a broad range of programs which are taught by highly credentialed faculty. Father Judge students will have the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive music program which will enable them to achieve their artistic, educational and social goals. Settlement will be teaching up to four classes at Judge before and after school.

FINISHING TRADES INSTITUTE (FTI)

“Father Judge helped my son become the man he is today! The schools values, standards, ethics and excellent academics gave Greg the best all-around high school experience we could have asked for. The faculty that supported the activities that Greg was involved in gave him the guidance and tools that he is using in college to achieve success in the field he has chosen. There is a strong sense of family at Father Judge and we are so proud to have been a part of it.” • Lori Van Buskirk, Class of 2015 parent

FTI serves to educate and provide the experience of apprenticeship programs in dry wall, finishing, glazing, painting and paperhanging. This program is available to juniors and seniors who meet requirements of participation. The program is for 15 weeks and features students going to the Finishing Trade Institute on Hornig Road once a week, (students who participate will need to make up all classwork, homework, test and exams). Students who successfully complete this program will receive a certificate which Apprenticeship Programs of the FTI “recognize.”

Father Judge is proud to announce that two graduate students have joined our staff for the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school years. Both graduate students are pursuing their Master’s Degrees in Education and will teach two classes each semester. Also, they will assist our Student Services Office and the Brisson Center.

FATHER JUDGE FABRICATION LAB

Our new Fabrication Lab will provide opportunities for students and faculty to explore hands-on building projects. Students will get a taste of what it is like to design and build structures, as well as conduct field experiments to truly bring STEM fields to life. Check out what the U.S. Department of Commerce has to say: “U.S. businesses frequently voice concerns over the supply and availability of STEM workers. Over the past 10 years, growth in STEM jobs was three times as fast as growth in non-STEM jobs. STEM workers are also less likely to experience joblessness than their non-STEM counterparts.”
