Sania Maska

Pret Collectio This season, Fashion Pakistan week & HUM network have brought forth Telenor Fashion Pakistan Week 2015 (TFPW) to give designers a chance to display their various collections. Sania Maskatiya was one of the prominent ones who added value to the occassion.

Sania Maskatiya featured vibrant blends of both pattern and texture which were generously applauded by the fashion loving audience. Other varities included crop tops to jackets, capris, and to full-length flares. She managed to put a spotlight on the most necessary elements of design.

atiya Luxury

on at TPFW 15 Another of her collections at TPFW15 consisted of plush colour palette from the sedate to the snazzy, ‘Khayat - The Tailor’. She used deluxe silks to utilitarian denims as alternative canvases on which flash images from a kaarigar’s workshop glided eloquently.

SANIA MASKATIYA:

Through Spring/Summer range Sania Maskatiya paid homage to the tailoring craft with both explorative sensitivity and edgy flamboyance via her luxury Pret collection, ‘Khayat – The Tailor’ at TFPW.

In one of the presentations visible were print motifs such as tape measure, rolls of thread, buttons, needles, ribbons and rope featured alongside near-neon paint splashes and geometric patterns. Sections of light embroidery and vibrant graphic designs lifted both the texture and mood of each piece.

Valentino RTW Fall 2015

Collection

It takes confidence, not just a game sense of humor, to close a show with the walkoff for which the world has been waiting 14 years: Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, in character as Derek Zoolander and Hansel, were the surprise final exits of Valentino’s fall show. (Both modeled looks from Valentino men’s.) The joke landed. The crowd lapped it up. It was a fantastic, genuinely funny moment that anyone who decided to skip the show was surely sad they missed.

A lesser collection would have been outright upstaged, but the “Zoolander” spoof was a generous bonus to an essentially perfect show. Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli are good sports, but they take fashion very seriously, continually raising the bar with imaginative decorative effects and deluxe fabrications within the airtight aesthetic language they’ve established. Two famous muses fueled this season’s fantasy: Celia Birtwell, the wife of Ossie Clark and muse to David Hockney, and Emilie Louise Flöge; best known as companion and frequent subject of Gustav Klimt, she was also a couturier of Wiener Werkstätte-style fashion. Both women brought rich, creative textile associations to the table, of which Chiuri and Piccioli made incredible use. Birtwell also collaborated on the “funky” dragon that appeared toward the end of the lineup. “Women can be multifaceted,” said Chiuri backstage. “They can be muses, they can be artists. And our collections speak about this in a simple way.” Simple didn’t begin to cover it. The show opened with stark black-andwhite graphics on a trench with vertically striped arms, a horizontally striped hem and a patchwork of checks and triangles on the body. Optically entrancing, the patterns played out on dresses and easy sweaters over full midiskirts that had immediate impact. Considering the source material, the collection had a surprising amount of black, worked sparely on daywear and opulently often embroidered with gold and silver threadwork combination for evening events.

But there was ample color, too, in the subtle glimmer of gold on multicolored furs; a crimson red gown; burgundy, ice, pink and yellow lace arranged in crafty chevron patterns; the intense blue, red, black and gold of a geometric Viennese patterned gown. There were too many impressive, couture level treatments to list, all of them impeccable. The lurking criticism is that the delicately monastic silhouette the designers have become devoted to need to evolve. But who can complain when the work is so exquisite? Besides, that point ignores the smart, ongoing expansion of their day range, and the fact that Chiuri and Piccioli did offer variation on their high-collared, long-sleeve, regal uniform for fall, tweaking proportions to give newness beyond nuance. There were cropped midcalf culottes and skirts the same length. Shoulders had capelet panels in the front and back, and high necks were graced with delicate bows tied to the side. Gowns plunged into deep V-necks, point d’esprit shoulders and sheer bustlines framed with floral embroideries. Romance turned sensual, heightening as the looks marched on. Then it all ended with a big laugh. The show satisfied on every level.

The

Hollywood Glamour Look We show you how to create a modern Hollywood look that will give you perfectly contoured skin, voluminous lips and a modern smoky eye with a pop of colour. With awards season bringing back the glitter this year, Max Factor Australia head makeup artist, Liz Kelsh, has shared with us how to create a red-carpet Hollywood look.Bold eyes, pale glossy lips and a bronzed and a glowing complexion are essential.

The Base:

Use a brush to apply foundation, starting in the t-zone and then blending outwards towards the hairline with fingertips. Follow with concealer under the eyes in a triangle shape to highlight and use fingertips to blend well.

The Bronzer: Brush bronzer along the sides of the nose, over the jawline, the cheekbones and a small amount on the forehead to shade and contour the face.

The Eyeshadow:

Use a brush to apply a pale eye shadow as a highlighter to the cheekbones and brow bone to accentuate the high points of the face. Use your fingers to pat on a shimmery, black cream shadow to create a cream base and then use a brush to sweep a black powder eye shadow over the top to create an intense, dark smoky look.

The Eyeliner:

Apply a kohl black pencil to line the upper and lower lashes, then use a brush to smudge along the lash line creating high impact definition around the eyes.

A Pop of Colour:

Use your fingers to dab a bold blue shadow right in the centre of the eyelids to add a pop of blue to

this smoky eye look. Focusing on the tips of the lashes, apply mascara to give this strong eye look a maximum impact. Finish the eye look with a dab of a shimmery copper to the inner corners of the eyes.

The Lips:

Apply a nude lip liner to the outside of the lips to create a voluminous effect. Use a brush to sweep a brown toned nude lipstick across the lips, then add a gloss to the centre to make the lips look even fuller.

The Blush:

To finish, add some colour to the cheeks by sweeping a luminous blush on the apples of the cheeks and blending out towards the temples.

Summer

Paging all shoe-lovers — and that’s all of us, right? The Summer ‘15 runways gave us a whole new crop of kicks to covet for this season. So what exactly do we have to look forward to? Designers emphasized wearability and ease, delivering flatforms and block heels, not to mention a selection of flats, dressed up with fringe and embellishment so you don’t even have to feel guilty about not wearing your heels. It’s all right here; just scroll for your preview of Summer’s new footwear.

1 - Woven Details:

Whether crafted with a more natural look or made of more futuristic technicolor fabric, like the shoes at Alexander Wang, woven cropped up at some of our favorite designers, giving subtle dimension to heels and Summer sandals.

2 - Power Pumps:

Pointed toes and high stiletto heels were still the mark of a great power pump. Summer ‘15’s iterations come with ankle straps, slingbacks, too, and in every case, they’re still a sign of classic womanly dressing.

4 - Western Influence:

With bold references, like spurs and the tougher, metal hardware at Marissa Webb, or more subtle influence, like the shape of the shoes at Victoria Beckham, Western-inspired kicks are having a moment.

5 - Fancy Flats:

Embellishments, feathered details, fringe, and multistrap buckles made Summer ‘ 15 sandals anything but average. These flats are dressy enough to wear right along with your party dress.

3 - All Laced Up:

Whether they’re tied up around the ankle and even the calf, we’re already predicting that statement-making laceup sandals will be any fashion girl’s must-have footwear.

6 - Colorblock:

Two tones — sometimes even three — are better than one. That was the lesson with the colorblock sandals, ankle-straps, and slides that hit the runway.

7 - Block Heels:

Forget tall, spindly stilettos, the heel to have for Summer is a wide, supportive block heel. Feet, rejoice!

Time is going by, things are moving forward and so should your style. Looking like you did a few summers ago is boring and doesn’t inspire the kind of excitement that will draw good things your way. It’s the perfect time to get out of your comfort zone and think about trying out some new summer outfits this year. No matter your budget or how much time you have to spare,

Ways For Men To Nail

Summer Style

• Keep Your Body Hair In Check:

Warmer weather means exposing more skin and more body hair. A lot of guys have excess body hair that needs to be groomed. Some body parts, like your back, are not negotiable, get it waxed. (Tip: Make sure there is no hair between your back and the line where your hair on your head begins. Unruly hairs creeping out from the back of your T-shirt is a turnoff.) Other body parts, however, like your chest, are negotiable; you’ll have to consider your preference, budget and what the woman in your life thinks. Major areas like your back and chest are well-suited for waxing. This video goes over what you need to know.

• Find A Signature Accessory:

Summer fashion for men can get boring. Unlike women, who can wear dresses, skirts, high heels, etc., men are relegated to shorts and T-shirts. The answer to this challenge lies in accessories. A handkerchief worn as a pocket square, a vintage leather backpack -- these are accessories that give basic outfits more character. We think hats are a good choice for the summer because they protect your head and face from the sun. There’s a lot of room for error when choosing a hat, so we enlisted the help of our friend Mr. Mort to walk your through finding the perfect hat.

• Wear More Color:

And by color, we don’t mean a lighter version of your blue jeans. Show of hands: How many of you only wear black, blue, white and gray? How boring. Dark colors looks jarring under the sun, so this summer, don’t be afraid to inject your wardrobe with some much-needed color. A pair of chinos, a button-down, a wallet, sneakers -- they all work as colorful alternatives to the usual rotation.

• Protect Your Skin:

You know you’re suppose to wear sunscreen year round, right? And how many of you do? How many of you apply it to your face every day in the summer? That has to change, because you don’t want to put your health at risk and you don’t want to speed up the aging process. Look for a lightweight moisturizer that has SPF built in (SPF 30 or higher). Some also come with a built-in self-tanner, which will give you that awesome summer tan.

• Lighten Up:

Think one cologne is enough? Think again. As the seasons change, so should your scent. Citrus-y scents work best in warmer weather, while spicy and woodsy notes are best for fall.

• Get A Haircut - Every Three Weeks:

Ask a woman what she notices about a man, and hair, without fail, will be mentioned. How you wear your hair in the summer is arguably the most important time of the year to care, because it goes a long way in separating us from the rest of the T-shirt-and-shorts-wearing crowd.

The bedroom; one of the most sacred rooms of the house and one of the rooms where we spend the most time (even if it’s to merely sleep). It can also be one of the few rooms where you can design and decorate it to meet your particular tastes, and not have to worry what Tom, Dick and Harry thinks, as they’ll never see it. For couples, there needs to be a balance, a juggling act, sacrificing personal extremes and coming to an agreement on a design that works for both.

Modern Bedroom Design Trends

We at Freshome know the psychological effect and mental state a room can put one into; the colors, feel and energy which it emits. It just so happens the bedroom is the first environment we are subjected to when our eyes open and it’s also the last image which we have when falling asleep.

A few of us here are interested in psychology and we believe a healthy way to start the day is to wake up in bedroom enviornment which stimulates positive mental energy, which is the perfect spring-board to Carpe Diem the day with true passion and gusto.

Floral Wall Art:

Extravegant and flamboyant floral wall art is fresh. There is something refreshing about the beauty of natural flowers (without wanting to sound too flowery). If you are a person who appreciates the intricacies and facinations of living world, a large wall painting or print could add that inspirational edge which your bedroom has lacked. Our personal preference is a professionally hand painted piece, however this comes at a price. Large prints are an acceptable alternative; so long as what you choose give you an extra bounce in your spirit when you look at it.

Gray, Soft Blacks and off Whites:

Look for off blacks, grays and whites, all rolling back into each other like the greens of a forest fold back into each green. Take a visit to any of the interior design or trade fairs this year and you’ll see this color palette prevalent amongst vendors. Popular amongst vendors means in demand from customers.

Radiant Orchid:

Rich and vibrant with life; just like the name suggests, radiant orchid is Pantone’s color choice. This palette is not for everybody, but as aforementioned, if this color energizes you, go for it as it’ll not only please your emotional heart strings, it’ll also please your mental faculties knowing you’re on the cutting edge of the latest interior design trends. Look to color walls, lampshades, floral art, rugs, patterned cushion, pillow, bed covering and upholstery covering and to finish off, add a ravishing live orchid as the cherry on the cake.

Natural Materials:

Natural tones, wood features, metals, stone & brick. Use natural tongue and groove wooden panels, brick or brick veneer for walls. Use natural materials as features in the room such as the room below, where Murphy Code have used chunky thick planks of wood, showcasing the natural grooves and curves, which jumps out from the bed as a feature on the wall behind, weaved around well place sconce lighting: Loving it.

Hotel Influence:

Some will loathe this one, but hotel style bedrooms are edging their foot through the door of home bedroom design. Look for large roomy beds, extravagant, yet universal headboards, bringing in the practical elements such as bedside lighting, table and chairs and large windows to let in a lot of natural light.

Although you can’t spend the night in all of the treehouses below; most of them feature incredible furnishings, amazing views and a uniqueness that sets them apart from “just your average treehouse”. From square to round to a hexagon; theses houses come in all different shapes and sizes. Whether you are looking to spend a romantic night under the stars with the breeze blowing softly or looking for a family friendly spot complete with zip lines and hiking trails; you will find a treehouse for you. From a restored airplane complete with a deck in place of the wing to a 3,300 square foot private mansion treehouse discover ten treehouses from Sweden to Costa Rica to Oregon that will absolutely blow your mind.

Wilkinson Residence, Oregon:

This treehouse mansion is a whopping 3,300 square feet of indoor living space with an additional 500 square feet of outdoor space. The architecture is incredible from the glass wall that wraps around the living room to the open spaces that allow for the light to flood in. The materials used in the house are mainly all natural and the owner had the place built to address the flow of music. The house is built on a sloping lot which allows the living space to sit in the forest canopy. You can’t spend the night here as this is a private residence and the pictures truly don’t do this incredible treehouse justice; you truly have to see it to believe it.

Free Spirit Spheres, Vancouver Island:

Three spherical treehouses are suspended in the coastal rainforest along Vancouver Island’s west coast; open 12 months a year and for adults only. These spheres are set amongst five acres of beautiful forest with a large pond in the center of the land, attracting plenty of wildlife. Each sphere is unique in what it offers; from power to amenities to the size of bed. Other than being amazingly unique; these treehouses offer guests a spiritual connection to nature as the spheres rock gently with the wind. Walkways, platforms and spiral staircases allow visitors to reach their personal sphere and if you don’t feel more inspired to do great things after staying a night here; we would be surprised.

The Mirrorcube, Sweden:

Tucked up in the trees is a house that blends so deeply into the surrounding forest you will have to look twice to realize it is actually there. The Mirrorcube is camouflaged by four walls that reflect the surroundings and thus creating a treehouse unlike any other in the world.

Finca Bellavista, Costa Rica:

This treetop paradise awaits visitors in Costa Rica and is actually a residential treehouse community where a select number of visitors can live out their dreams high in the treetops. From treehouses with sleeping lofts for the kids to ones filled with bright skylights to romantic two-pod homes; the choices are endless. The treehouses and buildings are connected by zip lines and platforms and this community offers hiking trails, waterfalls, snorkeling spots and rivers throughout. A 2-night minimum is required here put in place so that visitors can truly get the authentic experience. Whether you want to stay in an octagon, square or multi-level treehouse.

Lucky for the birds this mirrored house is covered with a special covering that only birds can see, thus avoiding any accidents. But if we talk about the safety of this house than its not a wise desicion to keep this type of property or to live in these type of houses. The inside is spectacular in itself with a double bed, bathroom, lounge and rooftop terrace. The six windows offer spectacular views and the treehouse can be reached by a bridge. A once in a lifetime opportunity awaits visitors in the country of Sweden high up in the trees.

Tongabezi Lodge Treehouse, Zambia: This gorgeous treehouse is tucked away in a huge ebony tree and offers an entirely open concept; complete with a claw foot tub that overlooks the Zambezi River. No outside walls ensure that visitors have access to the incredible surrounding views. The magnificent king size bed comes complete with canopied mosquito netting and is occupied on the middle level of the house. A few steps down the lounge area await and visitors will spend hours basking in the sun in the comfortable chairs that sit on the deck overlooking the river. West African artwork, Asian furniture and hand woven carpets all set the stage for a unique and stunning stay in this treehouse.

Beach Rock Treehouse, Japan

This treehouse is located on private land in Okinawa Japan and was originally built to communicate with outer space. The design looks suited to do just that and this treehouse is said to be the plexiglass portal on the world. A combination of stairs and ladders is how one reaches the entrance to this round dome set high up in the trees. Although it is not known to have made contact with outer space; the treehouse is now a place for people to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and relax in this space while exploring inner peace.

Chewton Glen Treehouses, England

Perhaps the most luxurious of the treehouses on this list are the ones located at Chewton Glen with floor to ceiling glass allowing guests to truly feel as though they are right in the heart of nature. These elegant suites are outfitted with separate bedrooms and living spaces, warm comfortable colors and beautiful furnishings. An outdoor hot tub, walk in shower, wood stove and flat screen TV’s are just a few of the luxury amenities that are available to guests. These stilted treehouses are privately located in the canopy of a forest and offer the ultimate luxury for those wanting to spend a night in nature without sacrificing extravagance and comfort. Bangkok Tree.

House, Thailand

Located just thirty minutes from the bustling city of Bangkok is a place where visitors can breathe fresh air, relax in nature and sleep under the twinkling stars. The Bangkok Tree House offers guests the opportunity to sleep in one of the jungle top houses while resting assured that this eco-friendly hotel is doing its best to stay green. From the family nest that has access to three roofs and sleeps four people to the two person room with a view that is void of walls or a ceiling; this hotel is a sure hit. Beautiful outdoor showers, a natural pond and limited access to the land makes the Bangkok Tree House one of the most incredible treehouses in the world.

Jacqueline Fernandez Living the Dream Jacqueline Fernandez is one of those rare breed of actresses, who can even melt a rock with her effervescence. Her positivity can lift your spirits instantaneously. But her cutesy attitude is not all that there is to her. Jacqueline is wise beyond her years and has a good head on her shoulders.

“I navigated the pressures of the industry as an outsider for quite a while. It can’t be all for nothing,” she laughs. Though Jackie’s been around since 2009, she only got her due post the stupendous success of Kick last year. And now with her latest release Roy winning her many accolades, she couldn’t be happier. Looking elegant in a charcoal-grey top and beige skirt with her hair neatly tied in a high pony, she sits down for a chat on her journey so far, the man of her dreams, her genuine friendship with Sonam Kapoor and a lot more…

Many believe you’ve finally come into your own now. How do you feel at this point in your career?

(Giggles) I feel great. Come to think of it, I’ve been extremely lucky because I’ve been a part of big movies since the beginning of my career. My first film was Aladdin, a big film. Then I did Murder 2, another big franchise. Even Housefull 2 and Race 2 were sequels of already successful films. But I’m relieved that I’m getting noticed at last. Though I did big films, I wasn’t noticed initially. Maybe I wasn’t taken seriously because I’m an outsider and couldn’t speak Hindi well back then. But I never stopped working on myself. And that hunger to finally get noticed got fulfilled after Kick. It gave me a new lease of life. It was like my second debut. Kick has been the biggest turning point in my life.

What’s your equation like with your Kick co-star, Salman Khan, today?

It’s amazing. While we were shooting, he was a sort of inspiration for me. I’ve always been hardworking but he’s extremely hardworking. I realised that’s how you need to be, no matter how famous you get or how much stardom you have. Plus, he’s so passionate about what he does. And he’s someone who helped me at a time when I needed it the most. It’s not something I’ll ever forget.

Do you ever get curious of what people are secretly saying about you?

I like to be aware of what is going on and what people are saying. Simply because, it’s always been about learning and growing for me. The only way you can do that is by taking criticism in your stride and doing something about it. There are many people who don’t like to hear the truth. Plus, in our industry, people around you don’t always give you the correct picture, either out of love or politeness. They don’t give you the truth. So when I do hear it, I don’t necessarily feel amazing but it’s a good way of self-improvement.

Does excessive criticism get to you?

It gets to me when things are misinterpreted or fabricated. Our audience believes things obsessively and passionately, especially when it’s hot gossip or something sensitive. So that is annoying. But it’s just annoying and there’s not much you can do about it because you’ve chosen this world.

They say two actresses can never be friends. But you and Sonam Kapoor are as thick as thieves. Are you really close?

We are. It’s funny that people actually believe actresses can’t be friends because I think it’s quite the opposite. It’s nice to be close to someone you can relate to. When you have an actress friend, you can discuss everything with her. You can open up about certain things with her, knowing only she’d get it. You can take advice from her and learn from her experiences. As an actress, you must have at least a few close actress friends.

So there are no insecurities at all?

None, whatsoever. I always wish the best for Sonam and I know that she wishes the same for me. In fact, whenever something amazing has come up, she’s always encouraged me to do it. There have been times when I’ve had second thoughts about certain things but Sonam has been my sounding board. She’s helped me take those decisions and I’ve thanked her for them later. Even I get excited when she’s doing well. Sonam is genuine, honest and has worked hard to get where she is today. She’s truly a beautiful human being.

Do you think things will change now considering you both will be vying for the same films?

No. So what if we’re contemporaries? Yes, she could be doing my films as much as I could be doing hers. But it can’t be an issue. There is so much work for everyone in the industry and you can’t possibly do every film. If one film doesn’t work out, something else will. Simple. If your friendship with someone changes on the basis of competition, then it’s not true friendship. My friendship with Sonam isn’t fickle. We’re not casual friends.

Coming to something personal now, are you single? Yes and happily so.

Why you want to be single? Well, because I like to take my time. I hurt quite easily. Sometimes, I wish I was a bit stronger and slightly better at being in control of my emotions.

What are the three What is a deal Do you have a secret celebrity qualities your guy breaker for crush? must possess? you on a date? (Blushes) I have so many. Confidence in a man is attractive. He should also be talented and worldly wise. And he should be well-travelled too. That’s important for me because I’d want someone I can travel the world with.

Someone who’s unhygienic. (Laughs) So who among them would Men, please pay you kill to go out with? attention to your Leonardo DiCaprio. Any day. Anytime. Evhygiene. Bad hyerybody else I like is either married or taken, giene can put a like George Clooney and Prince William. woman off. I’ve always wanted to go out with them.

Do you have a bad habit? (Pauses) I like to whistle. I start whistling anytime, anywhere. And trust me; it can be embarrassing sometimes because I do it unconsciously, irrespective of where I am.

What is the one thing you wish you were better at?

I wish my language skills were better. It took me a while to learn Hindi. But now I know Hindi pretty well. People believe my Hindi isn’t good. But I’ve learnt the language. The more films I do, the more people will appreciate it, I guess.

Which is the last place on earth we’d find you?

That’s easy. You’ll never, ever, ever find me at a fast food joint.

Your job sucks when…

When I’m in a bad mood but I still have to smile and click a picture with someone.

If your life was a movie, which one would it be… Bridget Jones’s Diary.

If you were given a free plane ticket to go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Paris. It’s beautiful. It’s the city of love and romance and fashion, if I may add. It’s also one my favourite cities in Europe.

What are you afraid of the most? (Takes a deep breath) Dying alone. It’s a scary thought to have.

One thing you’d sell your soul for…

A beautiful holiday home in a European countryside.

What’s been the best part of your journey as an actress?

The best part has to be the fact that I’ve made my parents proud. That’s been the most fulfilling too. Also, it’s been amazing working with so many talented and like-minded people. I’m glad I’ve been part of a few of the biggest hits in Bollywood.

Ek Paheli Leela

is a Sunny Leone’s Show Ek Paheli Leela invests little effort in character development or setting, notes Paloma Sharma. Meera (Sunny Leone) is a London-based supermodel who cannot travel around the world because of her fear of flying. However, her friends/colleagues/ enablers – ‘fashion king’ Andy (VJ Andy) and Radhika (Shivani Tanksale), a professional photographer who can’t take a single decent picture – trick Meera into coming to India. Once here, she meets Prince Ranveer (Mohit Ahlawat). The two fall in love and get married. However, their happily ever after is interrupted by Karan (Jay Bhanushali), who recognises Meera as Leela, a girl from his past life and the key to answering all the questions that have been tormenting him.

No one’s is going to watch ek paheli leela for the acting or the script or the cinematography except maybe the four-year-old in the middle row, who was tricked into it by his mummy (mothers are devious that way, I tell you). Ek Paheli Leela can be effectively summarised by one of its posters. There’s Sunny Leone in extravagant, revealing costume(s) sitting on an unimaginatively designed throne and wielding power over pretty much No one’s going to watch everybody. The film never telling us how Meera/ Ek Paheli Leela stops is the most for the acting or Leela(/Sunny?) beautiful girl to ever walk the script or the the planet and how her beaucinematography ty is such a curse that it ruined her life not once, but twice. Not only is Leone unconvincing as both the glamorous Meera (her performance as a drunk is cringeworthy) and the village belle Leela, she strangely has the most awkward intimate scenes in the film. There’s one with Rajneish Duggal, who plays Leela’s penniless lover, Shravan, where the two of them make love in the desert and pour sand over each other.

I’m still trying to wrap my head around that one. Moreover, if you’re a linguistic purist from the Hindi heartland who was mad at Leone for murdering your mother tongue, wait till you hear her speak Rajasthani. Duggal, for his part, puts in significant effort into his performance even if he can’t be deemed an award-worthy performer. However, the same generosity cannot be extended to Bhanushali and Ahlawat. Both are terribly cast.

Jay Bhanushali carries that melodramatic streak over from his past life on the small screen and Mohit Ahlawat has the entirely wrong body language. Ahlawat moves more like a body-building, Bhai-obsessed local goon than a wealthy, refined member of an erstwhile royal family. For a film with a budget of Rs 15 crore, Ek Paheli Leela has the exact same production value as Spark, another recent Duggal starrer. Despite having a script that demands high quality art design and recreation of a historical period, Leela chooses to spend on Leone’s highly embellished costumes (which are laughable).

The film features dialogue that is too poorly written. The good thing about Ek Paheli Leela is that the film is aware of its identity and purpose. It also realises at the end of its almost two and half hour-long run time, that there are wide loopholes in the script and questions that still need to be answered. Hence the film attempts to bring subplots to a close by hurriedly revealing everything without much coherence. Uzair Jaswal and Tulsi Kumar’s Tere Bin ditty is a redeeming factor, in spite of embarrassing tunes such as Desi Look and Glamorous Ankhiyaan. Ek Paheli Leela invests little effort in character development or setting. For example, no one tells us why a young man and woman are allowed to run free and indulge in public displays of affection in a desert village in the early 1700s. In the modern day, archaeologists are (obviously) white men who seem to have been copy pasted from a Nat Geo spoof video. Though there are more flaws in the film’s execution, at the heart of it Leela is a genuinely intriguing, if slightly predictable story and the twist at the end could have been a game changer had it been played out better. Nevertheless, critical analysis is not going to make much of a difference for this film is clearly a one woman show and as far as the film is concerned, it is always Sunny in Rajasthan.
