TheFarnsworthArtMuseumistheresultofthe extraordinaryvisionofLucyCopelandFarnsworth, thelastsurvivingmemberofaprominentmerchant familythatsettledinRocklandin1850.Whenshe diedin1935attheageof96,sheleft$1.3million alongwiththreespecificinstructions:preserveher homeandopenittothepublic,createanart museum,andbuildalibrary.
TheessenceofLucy'svisionwassimple:tocreate somethingnewinaplacewhereitlikelynever wouldhaveexistedwithouther.Shewantedto sharehervisionwiththeonlycommunitysheknew ashome.Herprogressiveandfar-reachingvision wasnotrootedinself-glorification,either-itwas nottobenamedforher,butforherfather.Weare proudtosharetheinstitution'shistorythroughan illustratedchronology.
