e’ve all experienced power outages at one time or another. But should the outages become more frequent, they can obviously disrupt your home or business. That’s when you need to consider a generator. Whether you’ve lost electricity due to the weather, a downed power line or some other occurrence, a generator will help you get back to business quickly by allowing you to produce enough electricity for your own needs on site. In areas prone to storms, hurricanes and tornadoes, generators can be a smart investment.

AUTOMATIC STANDBY GENERATORS Automatic standby generators are on continuous standby, meaning that the generator can power itself on and off, regardless of whether you are home.

Choose a generator

Once a stop in the flow of electricity is detected, these machines respond instantly. They turn themselves on and begin supplying power. Installed outside of your home, these generators are similar to central heating and air units. They are powered by liquid propane or natural gas. The generator supplies electricity directly to your home’s circuit breaker. Because they operate quietly and smoothly, they are not an annoyance or distraction to you or your neighbors.

PORTABLE GENERATORS Portable generators are built to remain outside of your home. These mobile units are fueled by gasoline and manually operated. Extension cords will make it easier to plug objects directly into the generator. These kinds of generators are usually cheaper than automatic standby

generators.

STANDBY VS. PORTABLE Despite the price difference, there are plenty of advantages to buying an automatic standby generator. Since automatic standby generators use natural gas and liquid propane, the cost of running this machine will be cheaper. The Red Cross endorses automatic standby generators because they are a cleaner method of powering your home. Portable generators produce harmful byproducts that can damage the environment. These units keep your house neat and clutter-free. Portable generators require numerous wires and extension cords running through your home. It is much easier to have power connected directly into your home’s infrastructure.

Once power is restored, automatic standby units turn themselves off.

GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR GENERATOR It is important to pick a generator that can supply power to all the items you need in your house. Understand running and surge wattage. These two values inform you how much power your appliances need and the maximum amount of electricity they can handle. Prior to purchasing a generator, check the safety tags on your appliances for the correct wattage. The running and surge wattage on the generator needs to be high enough to satisfy the ratings of your most demanding appliances. Don’t be caught wishing you had bought a generator the next time there’s a power outage.

urchasing a home is a dream for most Americans — but it can also be a stressful experience and likely the biggest investment you’ll ever make. And rightly so. Your home represents many things, not simply just a place to live. You might raise a family there. You’ll almost certainly entertain friends. And last but not least, you’ll spend the majority of your free time there. You’ll want your home to be in the right location, to reflect your sense of style and be able to grow with you. Finding a home that checks all the boxes for location, design, amenities, school districts and much more is no easy task. And establishing a budget is vital to choosing the right house for your situation. Here’s some basic tips to help you get started on the road to home ownership.

HOW TO GUIDE 2020

Choose a home BUDGET

Aside from location, your budget is the most important thing to consider when searching for a new home. Most financial planning experts recommend you get pre-approved for a mortgage to help you figure out how much you can afford to spend on a home. These equations don’t take into account your preferences, so be sure to point out any amenities you think you’ll want or need in a home so that your lender can factor them in. Perhaps the best advice is to not overspend, especially on a first home. You won’t always get what you want, but your mortgage payment won’t be your only expense. Allow money for any upgrades, maintenance and, of course, furnishings for your new home. Make sure you stick to your budget. Before looking at any homes, make sure your budget is in place so you do not waste time

3

LOCATION

extremely important. A community with new, well-maintained homes and yards is more likely to increase in value over the long term. It is also a better environment. Live in a community where you can find friends and have a social life. A great house is one thing; finding that house in the right community can make all the difference.

Real estate agents tell you that location is everything, and they mean it. When you purchase a house, you are also investing in a community and you should feel comfortable in your new community. Checking out the community and neighborhood is your first step. Most people want a convenient location near shops, jobs, parks and schools. As a result, the most desirable neighborhoods are usually the most expensive. What do you value? If you have children, perhaps you want to live within a specific school district. Maybe you are looking for a shorter commute to work. To many, the attractiveness of the neighborhood and how well it is maintained is

Surrounding yourself with the right amenities inside and outside your home will help you feel comfortable and happy. New homes often have open floor plans, modern kitchens and bathrooms, “flex” rooms for multiple purposes and walk-in closets. You might be able to customize your home as well. Outside your house, bonus amenities include in-ground utilities, lighting, landscaping and playgrounds. There might even be a community pool or clubhouse. Always be aware if there are ongoing fees associated with these amenities, such as homeowner’s association dues or maintenance fees for any community areas.

omes with pools and spas are often the subject of envy, but they are no longer the exclusive privilege of the wealthy. All but the most extravagant models of spas and pool designs are within financial reach of many Americans. Adding a pool or spa means you can enjoy the relaxing benefits of water therapy any time you please — by yourself or with your family or guests — without sharing with strangers and the inconvenience of leaving your home. Whether you’re an avid swimmer or just enjoy relaxing in the water, your specific desires will lead you to choose which best accommodates your needs. But deciding on which can mean taking into consideration such factors as price, space and maintenance.

SPAS If you’re worried about the price, you

probably shouldn’t be. Home spas have become quite affordable in recent years. Installation of a home spa can also be a cinch, with a growing number of plug and play models and even portable ones that you can take with you on vacation. The home-spa industry has worked hard to incorporate innovations, such as ozonators and aromatherapy fragrances. Spas often found in high-end hotels and resorts are now available for the average consumer. You may be able to purchase some of these models at your favorite bigbox store or home-improvement center. You can also purchase a home spa with a media center, along with therapeutic and LED lighting. The best spas include hydrotherapy, which will help you heal and repair your body. Tubs with water jets will massage muscles, improve circulation, relax nerves and ease pain. The water suspends your

tired muscles in weightlessness, allowing them to rest. People with chronic back problems often report relief. Custom spas are also available. You can have it built to meet your specifications. Everyone has a different reason for installing a home spa.

POOLS At-home swimming pools are another favorite for health-conscious people. These pools are not like your typical in-ground blue bathtub. Natural stone, manmade waterfalls and landscape detailing will make your pool into a private oasis. Before purchasing your pool, decide whether you would like an in-ground or above-ground pool. Above-ground pools are less expensive, but many people prefer the durability and overall look of an in-ground pool. Take time to think about your decision. After all, your pool

is a major investment. It will be a part of your home for many years. Consider the landscaping around your pool. There are many possible finishes for the decking alone. You can also choose the materials, style and features. Sometimes the environment around a pool can seem as relaxing as stepping foot in the water. It’s a fact that most people build their dream pool over a number of years as it fits their budget. You don’t have to do everything at once. Just start with a high-quality installation and a vision of what you want the area to become. You can add more features later. With so many advances in home spas and swimming pools, combined with their affordability, it makes sense to install one on your property. After all, wouldn’t it be nice to have your own private resort without the hassle of leaving home?

How do you pick the best jeweler in your area? Finding someone with excellent skills is the first thing to consider. Quality jewelers offer reasonable pricing and fantastic customer service. Many jewelers travel to professional shows featuring the latest trends. They maintain their knowledge and understanding of the precious metal and gemstone markets. Technical expertise isn’t the only aspect to consider. Customers who receive superior service are likely to return for future purchases. You’ll want to work with someone who sees more than dollar signs behind each customer. Guarantees are essential. It is a fundamental factor in establishing a long-term relationship with the public and a track record of satisfied customers. Top professionals offer free repair

A professional understands the emotional bonds symbolized by a piece of jewelry, and treats it accordingly. Many jewelers are sensitive to the needs of each customer. A discount store may offer an unbelievable price on a piece of jewelry. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Inexpensive prices are often an indicator of lower quality gemstones and metal components with lower purity. When the item breaks, it might be impossible to take it back for a repair or replacement because the seller has moved on. Some dealers focus solely on profit. Malls across America are filled with jewelry stores. But a dedicated professional jeweler doesn’t just sell precious metals or gemstones. He or she brings a keen eye for the beautiful and stunning quality of each piece. It is true that price is important, but it shouldn’t be your top consideration. You will get better value for your money when you do business with a jeweler you can trust -- now and 20 years from today. The Small Business Association reports there are almost 28 million small businesses in the United States. Many small businesses are home-based and hundreds get started each month. Despite their prevalence, only a handful of small businesses survive more than 10 years. Small-business owners must learn how to properly market their businesses and garner a larger audience to stay afloat. While there’s no set amount a business should devote to advertising and marketing, such expenses should be included in an organization’s operational budget. Small-business owners just getting started may want to consider the following tips as they attempt to market

For the best results determine who your ideal customer is then develop a plan to reach them. Typically a multimedia mix is best. Local newspapers, television and radio stations often offer small business discounts. • Create an online presence. A survey from online marketing firm Yodle found that only about half of small businesses have websites. Customers routinely go online to learn more about businesses and make purchases. Customers will visit websites to find directions to brick-and-mortar stores, find store hours and/or learn about the products or services offered by a particular firm. Small-business owners should establish

an online presence and ensure the site is routinely updated and modernized. • Sponsor local events. For a relatively small investment, small businesses can get their names out to the public by sponsoring community events. When approached by schools and other organizations, lend your help. Donate a basket of goods or a certificate for services for gift auctions. Work with organizations to donate a portion of sales to a charity or school through a specialized fundraiser. Contact a sports league to see if your company name can be printed on uniforms or used on banners around the field. Not only will this get your name out, but it also will establish a positive image of your company. • Establish yourself as an ‘expert.’ Be accessible to journalists and media outlets who may need quotes or insight

when writing articles. Local papers and circulars can get your name out to the community and bring in new customers. Being quoted in print helps establish a reputation as being an authority in your field. • Don’t ignore social media. According to Adroit Digital, 75 percent of Americans who use the internet admit that product information found on social media influences their shopping behavior and enhances brand loyalty. Social media accounts are generally free to set up and require minimal effort to maintain. Social media can help establish and maintain a brand and help you share messages and other content. Small-business owners can enhance their marketing efforts by taking some relatively easy steps to widen their reach and get their names out to the public.

HOW TO GUIDE 2020

Choose a feed store

C

hoosing a feed store for your livestock may seem like a simple selection, like choosing a supermarket. But feed stores are specialty operations and no two are exactly alike. They offer different brands and types of feed for different animals. If you own a farm or have several pets at home, taking care of your animals begins with nutritious, healthy food. So finding a good feed store can make world of difference. As always, choosing a retail/wholesale store or outlet involves some research and review. Here are some things to look for when selecting a quality feed store.

QUALITY Just like humans, animal health is directly impacted by the quality of food they ingest. While most feed stores will carry a range of products at different price points, it’s a good idea to select the best food you can afford. All feed products contain nutrients with a mixture of carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, proteins and minerals, and they also contain filler such as cheap grains and animal byproducts. The best feed brands have the right nutritional mix to grow strong, healthy animals, with more beneficial substances and less filler. When you buy better quality food, your pets and livestock will have fewer allergic reactions, be able to digest their food better and will ultimately live healthier lives. That means strong muscles, teeth and bones, along with stronger immune systems.

KNOWLEDGE Look for a feed store that offers not only quality brands, but also knowledgeable expertise to help you pick the right product for your animals’ needs. The best stores are run by people with years of first-hand experience raising pets and livestock. They’ll know which products are the best fit for your goals,

whether it’s bulking up your cattle, raising healthy horses, or growing a shiny coat for show dogs. A good feed store will be staffed by people who know their products inside and out, including which ones are the best value for your situation.

SERVICE Like any retail operation, service can vary widely between different feed stores. You’ll want to find a store that puts their customers’ needs first, taking the time to get to know you and going the extra mile to make sure you’re satisfied. Some things you may notice: • Serving the community: Some feed stores are more like a central meeting place for the community. A store that partners with and supports its local community is always a good sign. • Staff recommendations: A good feed store will have employees who know enough about their products to offer informed, meaningful advice. • Special orders and mail orders: If the feed store doesn’t have the product you need in stock, they should be able to place a special order for you. • Delivery: Some feed stores may offer a delivery service to their local customers, making it easy and convenient.

SELECTION Beyond offering feed products, the best stores will have other products that help with agriculture. From fencing to seed, tractors to gardening supplies, many feed stores offer a wide range of other products. The best feed stores can be a one-stop shop for all your farming and ranching supplies. If you find a store with top-quality feed products, a knowledgeable and experienced staff, and service and selection that go above and beyond the basics, you’ll know you’ve found a great place to do business.

ecause almost every pet owner considers their animal part of their family, they want to treat them with honor and dignity when they die. And increasingly cremation has become an option that allows you to cherish your pet’s memory by retaining and memorializing their remains. If you’re dealing with the pain of losing a pet, here are some things to think about if you are considering pet cremation.

DIGNITY The ideal centers will treat your departed pet with honor. The staff should have a love of animals. When you speak with them, they should demonstrate concern for you and your pet’s remains. Staff members should empathize with you, as well as understand the intensity

of the grieving process. Decide if you want the cremated remains, or cremains, returned to you. In that case, you should ask for an individual cremation. In communal or mass cremations, the cremains are not returned. Some centers will allow families to spend time with their pet prior to the cremation service. You may even be

Ask how your pet’s body will be handled. The best pet cremation services are flexible about the process. They should be willing to pick up your pet wherever you choose — typically the veterinarian’s office or at your home. You might also opt to drop the pet off for cremation. Most services will offer you a choice of urns or other containers to memorialize your pet. Some centers offer urns that can be customized with photographs, engravings and other design details that have special meaning for you.

MEMORIES

The process of grieving the loss of your pet may take some time. Remember the memories you shared and the smiles that come from the pure love of your pet will help heal your pain. Consider putting a special picture of your pet near the urn on your mantle or shelf. Perhaps you can check with the cremation service to find out about customized products they offer to help memorialize your departed pet. One of the best ways to honor their memory is to make a donation to a local animal-related charity. A donation in your pet’s name will help extend their legacy and brighten the lives of other animals. Ask if the cremation center donates to the local animal shelter or other organizations in your area.

our heating and air conditioning system is a vital component of your home. Whether you’re investing a new system to replace an aging unit or repairing your existing system, creating a relationship with a professional HVAC company can save you money and headaches — and keep you warm and cool. The best HVAC contractors are helpful and reliable, but a poor contractor can cost you extra money and heartache. Good word of mouth will go a long way toward helping you find the best professionals in your area. Upon narrowing the list, call the remaining ones and ask about pricing, guarantees and warranties. Also inquire about how long it would take to complete a job and the manufacturers’ brands they use. If you are purchasing new equipment, find out if you need a separate service contractor or if routine maintenance and repairs are included in the price of installation. Does the company provide around-the-clock emergency service? High quality HVAC companies are fully licensed, bonded and insured. If a worker is injured or causes damage to your property, that insurance should cover it. Otherwise, you could be liable for the damages. Your insurance premiums would likely increase as a result.

Reputable HVAC companies will usually belong to recognized professional and trade organizations. Some well-known organizations include the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute, and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers. Membership in one of these organizations is not automatic. Applicants are required to have certain certifications, meet professional standards and meet or exceed other requirements before they are admitted. The best companies perform a thorough calculation rather than estimate. Buildings change over time due to foundations cracking or settling. It will affect the efficiency of any equipment. The HVAC company shouldn’t use the old unit to determine the proper size of a new one. If your old unit was inadequate, you will want to install a unit that is a different size. Speak with your HVAC installer to determine the right size and model for you. Ask your HVAC contractor to perform annual checkups to verify that the unit is running at peak efficiency. state planning might sound like a process reserved for the wealthy, but the truth is everyone can benefit by pre-planning in the event of your death. Like every end-of-life issue, it may not be among the most pleasant things to discuss, but making a plan for how your affairs will be handled after death is the best thing you can do for your loved ones. Document how you want your property and other assets handled to help your family avoid legal difficulties, inconvenience, unnecessary taxation and family arguments. Estate planning isn’t just about protecting heirlooms and it’s

more than just creating a will; it also provides security for your family.

plans for those whose situations are similar to yours. Do not try to do it alone.

SEEK LEGAL COUNSEL

LIFE INSURANCE POLICIES

While some people use online forms to draft a simple will, most people will benefit from consulting with an estate planning attorney. This experienced professional can create legal documents with your specific circumstances in mind. It’s true everyone should have a will, regardless of age. But that is only the first step in developing a solid estate plan. You should also create a living will, power of attorney and possibly a trust. Consult an attorney who has experience in developing estate

Life insurance policies provide for loved ones in the event of your death. There are a wide range of options, and only a few will make sense for your situation. A professional can guide you through the possibilities and help you make appropriate choices. Term life insurance policies are generally less expensive than other types of coverage. But whole life policies, annuities and other insurance products may be more appropriate for your circumstances. It is essential you take all the

time you need to learn about a particular policy before purchasing it. If you have any hesitation or confusion, ask another professional or keep researching.

FUNERAL EXPENSES Funerals are very expensive, sometimes costing up to $10,000. You don’t want to leave your family with large bills. That’s why you should plan ahead to cover the cost of your own funeral. Pre-paid funeral plans are a popular option, or you can simply buy a burial plot in advance so that one major task will be handled before your death. It may be uncomfortable and even frightening to consider, but it is something that must be addressed as part of a solid estate

plan. Visit funeral homes in your area to discuss prepayment options.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY Communicate with your family in general terms about your estate plan. Talking to them about what they can expect could head off estate disputes and heartache. A good estate planner can help you navigate complicated family dynamics and concerns that may accompany this process. The right estate plan and experienced professionals can make your legacy a blessing that your heirs will treasure for the rest of their lives. It is better to plan ahead than to be a burden on loved ones.

s cases of Alzheimer’s and dementia have increased, so have the facilities that offer memory care. The rise in prevalence of these diseases has fortunately spurred an increase in alternative and traditional treatment options. If you or a loved one are suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia, a memory care center is one such option that could prove a major help. These centers may be part of an assisted living center or operate as standalone facilities. Which you choose depends largely on individual circumstances. Here’s a basic primer in what you need to know when considering a memory care facility.

STAFF The experience and attitude of the staff members is one of the most

important considerations. They should treat all patients with kindness and respect. The center should also provide continuing education to employees to assure that everyone is up to date with the latest in memory loss research and care. Always visit a memory care center before admitting a loved one. Tour the facilities to make sure the building is clean and organized. The atmosphere should be calm and relaxing. Consistency and stability are important to those suffering from memory loss. The center should have a low turnover rate among staff members. No memory care center should rely heavily on part-time workers. Ask about the ratio of staff to residents, as well as the backgrounds of any medical practitioners employed by

the center. Your loved one needs personalized care and attention. It is vital that the center has enough workers on staff to provide quality care for your loved one.

SECURE, COMFORTABLE SETTING Quality memory care centers will resemble comfortable, inviting homes. They should not look like hospitals. The facility should be clean and sanitary without appearing sterile. A center’s cleanliness is an indication of the dedication of everyone who works there. Ask questions about the activities offered to residents, how visits are handled and the types of therapies available. Because patients can sometimes forget where they are, it is important to ask how the center protects its resi-

dents. What kind of security features do they use? Note your general impressions of each center you visit.

SUPPORT Quality memory care centers have support services for residents and families. Symptoms from dementia can range from mild to extreme. The center should be equipped to handle all stages of dementia. The best centers have support groups for residents and family members. You and your loved one should be comfortable with the memory care center you choose. The best facilities can give patients a much needed boost and improve their overall quality of life.

rimming or removing trees from your property is difficult work, not something you’d want to attempt yourself. Making sure your trees are healthy while avoiding property damage requires emptying a professional tree service. Follow these tips to find a qualified, professional tree service in your area. Ask friends, family and neighbors. You may know someone who has used a tree service in the past. They can tell you who does the best work. Also, check newspaper, phone and Internet listings. Contact at least three tree

services. Inform them of the situation and request a site inspection. It gives you the opportunity to ask about issues and get a feel for the experience and expertise of each company. Take notes so you can compare your results afterward. Find out how long each company has been in business, their experiences, references and whether they are licensed and insured. Check with the Better Business Bureau for outstanding complaints. Even reliable companies may have a few problems. It is how they resolve the issue that counts. Request estimates. These figures can vary widely.

Choose a tree service Some companies are better equipped for certain jobs, so they can offer more competitive pricing. Other companies are slow or may be trying to “fill-in” appointment slots with smaller jobs just to keep their crews busy. Don’t choose a company strictly by cost. Tree work is dangerous. Proper equipment, well-trained employees and insurance create high operating costs. It is worth paying more for peace of mind and excellent service. Look at a copy of their insurance policy. Coverage should include personal liability, property damage coverage, workers’ compensation and damaged vehicles

or home coverage. Inspect their previous work by looking at their portfolio. Each tree service company has a work style. Verify that it suits your needs. Photos of past work might also be on their website. Get a detailed written estimate of any work to be performed before signing a contract. Responsible companies will provide detailed descriptions, along with the time and cost for your records. This estimate should also offer information about cleanup expectations. Are logs to be cut up or left for firewood? Will the company haul everything away or leave it for you to manage?

Will leaves and twigs be raked up or run through a chipper? If they are removing an entire tree, what will happen to the stump? Verify the workers wear property safety gear. They should be wearing helmets at all times. In addition, they should use face shields or protective glasses and steel-toe boots. The person who climbs the tree should have arborist climbing ropes, specialized safety and climbing gear, the proper saddle, helmet and safety glasses. If you find they aren’t wearing safety gear, contact the company to discuss the matter.

urnishing and decorating a home is perhaps the most enjoyable task a homeowner confronts. It involves both practicality and personal style, comfort and originality. Everything in your home says something about you, so it’s important to examine your tastes and research your options. Here are some things to consider when decorating your home.

MATCH YOUR PERSONALITY Home décor should be a reflection of who you are. Don’t think you have to follow the herd. You’re unique, and your home should be, too. Whether you like excitement and adventure, which translates into bright colors and bold patterns in your home, or you prefer the calm, peaceful feeling of clean lines and muted tones, the right home décor will match your individuality.

Choose home decor MAKE A STATEMENT

It’s important to find a few bold items that make a statement and set the stage for your room’s feel. Throw pillows on the couch or new artwork on the wall are simple ways to start. Pick a few items that create a visual or stylistic theme for your room. Then look for accessories that fit the theme. The theme could be as simple as a color palette or something more literal, like a seasideinspired room decorated like a beachfront getaway. Really, it’s up to your imagination.

MAKE YOU FEEL AT HOME The perfect home décor will just make you feel right. When you mix and match the right items and create a space that matches your lifestyle, it’s easier to relax and unwind in a room that makes you feel comfortable. Design trends can be fun to follow, but a comfy, cozy feeling that’s unique to you — well, that’s timeless.

HOW TO GUIDE 2020

hen looking for a doctor, you are most likely seeking a primary care physician who can care for your general health needs. Finding the right doctor is never easy — and it should be hard. You’re putting your most precious commodity, your health, in someone’s hands and you need to feel comfortable of that person’s qualifications. For your best health, you need to have a good relationship with your doctor. And if you want to have a good relationship with your doctor, you’ll need to begin by choosing a physician who is an excellent listener and who take patient concerns seriously. But there are some other things you need to consider when feeling out a new doctor’s office. Here are some things to think about.

Select a physician INSURANCE

Insurance companies have contracts with individuals or group practices. It is likely that you cannot go outside of your insurer’s provider network without paying an additional fee. Your primary care doctor should be able to understand your medical needs, as well as offer you appropriate referrals should you need a specialist. It is possible that using a doctor outside your insurer’s primary care network may subject you to out-of-pocket expenses.

MEETING YOUR NEEDS Experts recommend selecting a general practitioner to serve as your primary care physician. This professional might be an internal medicine doctor or a member of a family practice. Under some circumstances, it is better to select a doctor practicing within a

particular specialty. Women might feel more comfortable with an obstetrician/gynecologist as a primary care physician. A pediatrician might be the primary care physician for children. Seniors could even have a geriatric specialist for their primary care physician.

ASK FOR REFERRALS Friends, family and other trusted sources are the best way to find a new doctor. People will gladly give referrals when they have had positive experiences with their health care providers. They will also provide feedback when the experience was not to their liking. Prior to making a final decision, always confirm that your physician has a current license to practice with the state medical board. Not every doctor accepts new patients. Once you have collected a list of possible physicians, contact them to make sure they will accept new patients, as well as the insurance you carry. Ideally, your first visit will include a routine physical examination and documentation of your medical history. But sometimes insurance carriers will decline payment for routine exams.

CONVENIENCE Convenience is another important factor when choosing a physician. His or her office should be easily accessible from your home or workplace. Ensure the doctor has admitting privileges at your preferred hospital in the event you need treatment. Ask where your physician can perform diagnostic tests and procedures. Some doctors might use a separate facility rather than their own offices. Finally, inquire how long it usually takes to book an appointment. When an emergency arises, you will want to know that your new doctor can meet you quickly.

he circumstances are never easy and may be emotionally crippling. Facing the death of a loved one requires planning that may be difficult. But there are ways to make this difficult decision a little bit easier on you and your family. People often select a funeral home because it’s nearby or has been recommended by someone they trust. But by limiting the search to just one funeral home, you may risk paying more than necessary for the funeral and any additional goods or services offered. Here are some tips to help make choosing the right funeral home less stressful.

COMPARE PRICES If you have had to make funeral arrangements in the past, you may be tempted to just go with the funeral

HOW TO GUIDE 2020

Choose a funeral home

home you have experience with. While this may be a smart option for some people, it’s not always the right option. Depending on how long it’s been since you needed to make funeral arrangements for a loved one, the price of that particular funeral home may have gone up. That’s why it is wise to shop around and compare the prices of the various funeral homes in your community.

ASK FOR RECOMMENDATIONS Even if you have never had to choose a funeral home in the past, you may have a friend or two who has. Ask these friends if they would recommend the services provided at the funeral homes they have used. They may be able to share valuable information about the staff, facility and prices of a specific funeral home.

ASK ABOUT PACKAGES Whether your deceased loved one had a specific list for their final wishes or you have to make these decisions for yourself, it is important that you ask a potential funeral home what types of packages they offer. You will find that not all funeral homes are created equal, and each offers their own different ways of handling a service. No matter what type of requirements you have, it is best to choose a funeral home that will cater to your specific needs in order to make this difficult situation a little less daunting.

CARING STAFF When visiting a potential funeral home, the funeral director can be a major deciding factor when you choose whether or not to use this par-

15

ticular company to handle the funeral of your loved one. A caring and professional funeral director and staff will take the time to explain all your options in an empathetic way so you can make a better choice when choosing a funeral home. If the director seems short or uninterested in your needs or makes you feel like you and your deceased loved one aren’t important, you won’t want to choose this facility to handle the funeral of your loved one. While dealing with the death of a loved one is hard, choosing the right funeral home can help relieve you of some stress. If you want your loved one to receive the proper funeral he or she deserves, following the above listed tips should help you make the right choice.

S

mooth, well-maintained pavement goes unnoticed. But cracked pavement or pavement with potholes is both an eyesore and a headache for businesses and homeowners. Worn pavement can make your home or business property look run down and uninviting. It can also damage vehicles and be downright dangerous, with cracks and potholes creating trip hazards for visitors to your property. But getting started with new paving can be especially vexing as cost, materials and labor can run into the thousands of dollars. If you’ve been putting off a paving project because you don’t know how to go about getting it started or are worried about costs, a paving professional may be able to set your mind at ease. Keep the following in mind and call local paving customers to learn more about the price and process of updating your drive or walkway.

Choose a paving service PROCESS

Understanding the process of laying pavement will help you understand what you need and which company is best for you. There are many types of pavements, including popular options such as asphalt or cement. Be sure you know the strengths and weaknesses of each material. The construction of these materials is also important. The preparation work, dimensions, depth and mixture of materials will impact the longevity of the surface, as well as the ongoing maintenance required. Tell your paving company how the surface will be used. If you are paving a commercial lot, for instance, provide them with an estimated traffic count with a note about the heaviest trucks that might use it. The best paving companies will have deep roots in your community. Climates and types of soil vary around

the country and a company with a long track record understands your area. They know what challenges various pavements face throughout the year.

PAST WORK Previous work can tell you a lot about a paving company. Request referrals from past customers. In particular, look for work that is similar to what you need. Maybe you need your pavement for your driveway. Look for similar driveways the company has installed in your area. Do the edges of the driveway look crisp and clean? Has the surface held up? Whenever possible, ask the property owner about their experiences during construction. Did the company finish the job on time and on budget? Were their expectations met? It is preferable to look for older work the company has done. If pavement installed years ago has held up against

the test of time, that is the sign of a quality job.

INSURANCE For your protection, verify that the paving company is properly insured. Many homeowner and business insurance policies don’t cover accidents that occur by contractors working on your property. Uninsured companies open you up to liabilities for any injuries or accidents that occur during construction. Only consider using pavement companies with strong insurance policies. It will give you peace of mind. Finally, follow the first rule of thumb when approaching any home-improvement project, especially when it comes to paving: Get at least three quotes on your project. Even if you have a favorite or recommended contractor, it’s smart to gather more quotes to compare warranty, price and project inclusions.

rom dents and scrapes to fenderbenders and more intense damage resulting from an accident, repairing your vehicle requires the services of expert professionals from an experienced, reputable auto body shop. Not surprisingly, shops specializing in this service can vary in quality, reliability and cost. It’s not unusual for auto body repair estimates to differ by hundreds if not thousands of dollars. To get the best work at the fairest price requires an investment in time and asking the right questions. Choosing the right body shop depends on many factors, such as the extent of damage, whether the costs are born by yourself or insurance, the experience of the shop with your make and model of vehicle and the shop’s history and reputation, among others. Paramount to your search is finding an auto body shop that’s honest, trustworthy and dependable. That choice will ensure

HOW TO GUIDE 2020

Choose an auto body shop

that your vehicle is repaired quickly, affordably and correctly. The shop you choose should be able to complete all manner of work, from a minor touch-up to a full-body repair. Your friends, family and colleagues might have recommendations. After all, auto body shops are an unfortunate, but necessary, part of life for most people. Have a list of companies, research each shop on the internet and read customer reviews. Testimonials, negative and positive, should be considered. But keep in mind that no business has a 100 percent satisfaction rate. Someone will always be displeased. Also, more people are likely to leave a negative rather than a positive comment. A good source for finding an auto body shop is your local newspaper. Local businesses advertise and many times you can find special deals to help save you money.

Once you have created a list of shops, contact them on the phone and ask pertinent questions. How long have they been in business? What are their specialties? How soon can you bring your vehicle in for an inspection? Ask to set up an appointment for a free inspection. Then further investigate the business. Look around their lobby. Is it clean? Do they have their license and any awards or certificates posted? Do they care enough about their customers to offer reading material, coffee or water? Consider prices. Are they comparable to other body shops? While you want to find a great deal, cheaper is not always better. Understand that you will often get what you pay for when it comes to auto body work. Low prices may be tempting, but they typically mean sub-par work, used parts and paint that is incorrectly applied. Feel free to ask the manager or owner

17

for references before they work on your car. You can also check their previous work. When you see a car with paint drips, panels that are misaligned or paints that don’t match, look elsewhere. You will not save money if you need to have the improper work redone. The shop should inspect your vehicle for repairs that are not readily visible. Often, there are hidden damages that cannot be detected until repair work begins on the vehicle. Finding an auto body shop may not be the most pleasant business because it usually means your vehicle has suffered some kind of damage. But finding the right shop will make the experience much more pleasant and you will be happy with the repairs. Especially if you find the right shop that knows how to repair your vehicle so it looks the same as before, or even better.

hernia is essentially a hole in the tissue that holds us together. The way I describe a hernia to my patients is to think of that tissue like a shirt. If we wore the same shirt, day in and day out, eventually it would wear out and start to tear. In a similar fashion, the fibers that make up our fascia can weaken or tear over time. Fascia is a web of connective tissue formed in bands that wrap around all the internal parts of the body from head to toe and fuses it all together. Fascia allows the muscles to move freely alongside other structures and reduces friction. It can be found immediately beneath the skin, around muscles, groups of muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels, organs and cells. Fascia is everywhere. Biologically, it’s what holds us together. Like a snug

Know what to do for a hernia pair of pantyhose (as if there is any other kind), fascia are the bands that bind us. Anything that increases the force against the fascia can cause it to tear. Common reasons may be lifting, pushing or pulling heavy objects. Chronic constipation and straining at bowel movements may chronically weaken the fascia and can cause hernias. Even a hard sneeze can do it. What should you look for if you think you have a hernia? Any bulge or knot that you feel is new or enlarging should be evaluated by a physician. If the bulge cannot be pushed back in, or reduced, we call that in the medical profession, an incarcerated hernia. That is important, as any hernia that becomes incarcerated can have the blood supply to whatever is in the hernia cut off. We call that a strangulated hernia. If a hernia strangulates, whatever is trapped in

the hernia can die and become gangrene. For that reason, I recommend anyone who has a hernia, which cannot be reduced, to immediately see a physician in an office or go to the nearest emergency room. It may only take a few hours for gangrene to set in. Hernias can be repaired much more easily when done electively, either laparoscopically or open, with or without mesh. It is important to consult early with an experienced surgeon to get the proper information and the facts regarding possible repair. At CMH Surgical Services, our surgeons have years of experience in a wide variety of hernia repair and we would be happy to explain them to you at any time. We can often see you the same day you call or the very next day. It is better to be seen by an experienced surgeon and not need it than to delay and suffer a potential injury that could have been easily preventable.

epending on where you live, chances are you have a few centers in your area to choose from. Whether you have the luxury of time to prearrange your rehab stay before an elective surgery or whether you send out the ‘scouts’ from your family to look into a few places for you, it can be confusing and daunting. We recommend going yourself or asking a friend or family member to go set foot in all the centers you’re considering so you get a true feel for the place. Any center will be more than happy to show you around so you can see how things work and what to expect. When you head in to learn more about a center, here are some questions we recommend getting answers to. 1. Is my insurance accepted here and

HOW TO GUIDE 2020

what steps do I need to take ahead of time to ensure coverage? 2. Does the staff specialize in any particular areas and what is the staff to patient ratio? 3. What types of therapy do you offer? 4. What types of treatment and team members will be active with my recovery? 5. What can be expected about the transition from hospital to rehab? 6. What items should be brought with me and what is provided? 7. Does the center offer outpatient therapy or will they help set up in-home services if needed after the rehab stay is complete? 8. Are care planning meetings conducted on a regular basis and are family members invited to participate? If you have other questions don’t be

shy about getting answers that will help you make the best decision for you or your loved one. Most of all, take note of your gut feelings about a center. You’ll notice how you felt when you set foot in the doors. Were you warmly greeted? Did the staff smile in the halls? Did people seem content? Were common areas clean and free of odors? Once you’ve decided on a center, we recommend verifying the best way to contact patients via telephone and where friends or family can send mail. Additionally, make sure appropriate emergency contact information has been communicated and ask for the names and contact info of integral team members at the center, from the social worker to the billing office. Once you’ve made your decision you can focus on healing and recovering.

reality of auto ownership is that at some point it will need repairs and upkeep. Some new car owners may naturally gravitate toward their dealers to follow scheduled maintenance to keep their vehicle in top shape. Older cars will likely need more attention. That’s why it pays to develop a relationship with a qualified, reliable and professional auto repair shop. Developing a relationship with an knowledgable mechanic or auto repair shop early on in your vehicle’s life can prove invaluable. Talented, honest mechanics can extend the life of your car and help you avoid costly repairs. And if the unexpected occurs — an accident or a major malfunction — that relationship can be the difference between hundreds and thousands of dollars. Even if your car is new, at some point it will need tires, oil changes or even a new

engine. If you have a relationship with a good auto repair shop, you won’t sweat it when these things come up. If you haven’t had a regular mechanic is recent years, now is the time to find one. Here are a few points to consider: • Less than 40 percent of new customers in auto shops are walk-ins. That means word of mouth is still king in the industry. Find a shop that gets rave reviews from family and friends, and you’ll be in good hands. • The Better Business Bureau can inform you about the repair shop’s performance and reliability. • If you travel often, consider a shop that offers a national warranty. For instance, a warranty of 12,000 miles or 12 months is handy for issues that keep cropping up, particularly in older cars. • Ask about the shop’s range of services. They will need the latest technol-

ogy to diagnose problems with newer cars. For example, can your prospective shop handle brake systems, electrical components and warranty repairs? Does the shop provide a loaner, rental car or shuttle service while your car is being repaired? • Look around the shop. Is the equipment in good condition? Is it clean, well-lit and organized? These factors all contribute to a level of professionalism. • Look for brand names and proper certification. Does the auto repair shop use brand-name parts? These parts are engineered to meet the manufacturer’s specifications and will likely come with a warranty. Shops may use remade or generic brands which your insurance policy may not cover, so be sure to check. • Are the auto technicians certified by a specific car manufacturer, the National Institute for Automotive Services or

Automotive Science Excellence? Is the shop approved by the American Automobile Association? If so, this indicates a customer approval rating of 90% or higher and the ability to adequately perform the services advertised. • Compare the services and fees of each shop in the area to find out the average price ranges. Don’t pick a shop based on cost; poor repair work will mean higher costs in the long run. You’ll also want to ask about the shop’s warranty policy. Imagine spending hundreds on a repair only to learn the work isn’t guaranteed. Once you have found a shop you trust, establish a good working relationship and try to use the shop for all of your automotive needs. Your mechanic will come to know you as a dependable customer and always be sure to provide you the highest level of service.

irst, let’s get any confusion out of the way. A real estate agent may or may not be a Realtor, but every Realtor is required to be a licensed real estate agent. A Realtor is simply a real estate agent who is a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR). This allows him or her to attend industry meetings and access software and educational tools. Realtors adhere to a strict code of ethics and have solid knowledge of the real estate business. Finding a reliable, reputable real estate agent is essential when you are considering buying or selling a home. These professionals can guide you through complicated negotiations and contracts to secure you the best deal you can get. They’ll also be able to inform you of the precise steps you need

to take just before buying or selling. Here’s some guidance in helping you choose the best agent for your situation.

WHERE TO START LOOKING Recommendations are one of the best ways to find a qualified real estate agent or Realtor. Ask people in your social network for referrals. Sometimes agents are good at helping clients purchase homes, but not as skilled at selling them. Keep that in mind when searching for the right professional. You might also contact local brokers or search the NAR directory online.

COMFORT LEVEL At the initial consultation with a prospective real estate professional, focus on your comfort level while interacting

with them. Do you get the feeling they are genuinely concerned about your needs? Or are they focused on their commission? Do they know the current housing market? Can they negotiate a contract? It is important that you feel comfortable with the agent. You must trust that this person can behave ethically and help you secure a good deal.

COMMUNICATION AND PLANNING Your agent should be an effective communicator. If you are selling your home, your agent should develop an effective marketing plan, explain it to you and respond to any questions or concerns you have. The marketing plan will probably involve placing advertisements and conducting open houses to invite the public for home viewings.

21

Above all, your real estate agent needs to provide updates on progress. Do not work with someone who does not return phone calls or emails.

MORE RESOURCES To get a better idea about the process of buying and selling a home, conduct some research on your own. Real estate magazines contain good information and can be a great way to start your research. There are also a lot of good resources on the internet, such as www.Realtor. com, which is associated with NAR and which contains free, useful information. Upon successfully buying or selling your home, keep your real estate agent’s contact information on hand. You may want to refer other people to him or her. You may also need their services again someday.

You might be convinced to go shopping after seeing advertisements and sales featuring new appliances with all the latest features and technology. Exploring these innovations in home appliance technology can be an enjoyable and eyeopening experience. STORE POLICIES

First, do an internet search for appliance stores in your area. Local stores are easier to work with and you will likely be able to get your appliance much quicker than if you had to go out of the area or order it. If your refrigerator has stopped working, this is especially important. Many appliance stores also offer free delivery in the local area. You can get a good idea of the services offered by various companies via business review sites. Don’t dismiss negative reviews, but keep in mind that customers who have good experiences are less likely to crow on the internet. Many stores also have review sections for customers to leave comments, reviews and ratings for the services and the prod-

For most of us, getting a good deal is probably a top concern when shopping for appliances. Check your local newspaper and your mailbox for circulars announcing the latest, greatest deals on appliances in your area. Many stores will use price-matching to stay competitive. Not all stores have policies on price-matching, so be sure to ask first. If you can find a lower advertised price on the exact same product and model elsewhere, many stores will sell you the product for that price. As always, conduct research on the appliance you need to make sure you are spending money wisely. Not all appliances are the same; just because one manufacturer was excellent two decades ago

Review the store’s policies about warranties and repairs. If the appliance comes with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty, you might not need an additional warranty from the store. Appliances have a yearly sale-price cycle. Washers and dryers usually go on sale during the winter. Refrigerators are often discounted in the spring, with stoves and ovens dropping in price during the fall. If you don’t need it right away, consider shopping seasonally for the best deal. You could also haggle for a price, especially at a local appliance store. Consider these questions when you’re looking for an appliance store: Do they have a delivery window, warranty options, repair services and range of products?

Choose the best pediatrician

D

uring your baby’s first year, you will likely be taking your child to a doctor many times for checkups and unplanned visits. But the cold, clinical world of medical offices can be unsettling for anyone, least of all new babies. Fortunately, pediatricians are trained not only in medical treatment for children but how to make them most comfortable during their visits. Welcoming, child-friendly waiting and exam rooms, along with a caring, easy-going manner work wonders on youngsters. If you’re looking for a pediatrician for your child, here’s how to get started.

RECOMMENDATIONS Family, friends and acquaintances will likely have recommendations about good pediatricians in your area. Parents will be happy to share about their experiences at the pediatrician’s office. You can also check with your family doctor or Ob/Gyn who delivered your baby. They will have informed recommendations to help you select the best doctor. Don’t just collect one or two names. Ideally, you should have a list of at least three professionals. It will help you compare and made the right selection.

out if your doctor is receptive to this idea.

INSURANCE

THE VISIT

Next, look at your insurance policy. Find out if any of the people on the list are part of your network plan. Remember that children visit the doctor more frequently than adults because they catch a lot of viruses while building up their immune systems. Doctors not covered by your insurance should be crossed off your list. You might also reconsider your insurance policy, if possible.

If you haven’t chosen a pediatrician before giving birth, bring your child along for this meeting. It will help you gauge their interaction. The doctor should make your child feel at ease. He should be patient, tolerant and friendly. You must feel comfortable with this medical professional as well. He should take the time to answer your questions thoughtfully. Inquire about their emergency policy. Does the office accept walk-ins? If your child gets sick in the middle of the night, can you call the pediatrician or nurse? Find out about office hours and when you need to visit the hospital instead. Is the office decorated with children in mind? Is it a safe, inviting atmosphere? Does the practice use modern equipment? Are exam rooms clean? Many pediatricians now offer separate waiting rooms for children who are not sick. These “well child” waiting areas help stop the spread of viruses. If your child is there for a checkup, it is a bad idea to have him sit next to another child who has the flu. With this strategy, you should have an easier time selecting a pediatrician. Choosing well now will save you time and trouble in the future.

NARROWING THE LIST It is time to arrange a meeting with each physician so you can find out who will work best with your child. Look at their office locations. They should be in a convenient location, not far from your home. You will probably visit this doctor quite often, so convenience is a big factor. When you meet with the doctor, focus on his or her philosophy. Some physicians prefer to run lots of tests. Others have a more relaxed and homespun approach. Parents who follow a wellness philosophy might have to look harder to find a doctor who is openminded about alternative medicine. Be sure to find
