has fought cancer for 15 years. On the positive side of life’s ledger, Ken and Marcia have eight grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren; and Nick is getting married this summer.
The couple has remained active with the South Dakota Pork Producers Council. They’ve helped with the Farmer Appreciation Day at the Sioux Empire Fair for 25 years and have cooked pork at many other events.

Ken is also on the board of directors of the South Dakota Association of Towns and Townships. “I’ve been on the local township board for about 40 years. After I quit Morrell’s, I went to one of the township meetings. And then, just like that, I was on the board.”
He said the South Dakota Association of Towns and Townships lobbies the legislature for state support of infrastructure in townships and small towns. “We have some money in our county, but the townships really struggle in in northern South Dakota. They don’t have tax revenue up there.” Marcia retired about a year ago from Avera after 46 years. Since 2003, she worked at an Avera clinic with Dr. Brian Knutson, a dermatologist. “I’d still be working if I could, but I was going through cancer treatment so my doctor didn’t want me to be working at the clinic.” She still gets together with her former co-workers. “I really enjoyed what I did and the people I worked with.”

Even with all the highs and lows, the years have been good for Ken and Marcia Siemonsma. “I wouldn’t do it any different. Farming is a good life,” Ken said.
Respectfully serving families for generations.
