You stick money in the ground and you don’t know if it’s going to come up or not.” He shakes his head about “all these younger guys who buy these bigger tractors and combines. It’s all got to be paid for. I’ve seen the other side when you don’t get a crop. I’ve been dried out, hailed out, drowned out. But a lot of the younger guys haven’t seen that.” All the same, he said, “I don’t want to quit. I know too many guys who farmed and then retired early and ended up being planted in the ground. I don’t want to be one of them. I feel good, my health is good, so I’ll keep farming. I just love to be out here. It gets in your blood. In the springtime, I love the smell of the fresh dirt; I love bringing in new calves; and working with new cattle.”
