Jeff said, “I worked alongside my dad since I was 10. A lot of what you get taught is both spoken and unspoken. Some days it’s a real blessing to work with your dad and some days it’s a curse – and that can be all on the same day. Anyone who works with family knows that.” Life is a little easier for father and son and their cows these days. After many years of calving on a dry lot, Jeff put up a hoop barn three years ago. He began buying cows while he was still in high school and continued while he was attending Mitchell Technical College. After about 40 years living on the farm site, Rich and Paula recently moved into a new home on the south side of Hurley. In January, Jeff, Sydney, and their two boys, Clay, 3, and Micah, 9 months, moved to the main farm site. Previously, they were living on the farm where Jeff’s mother and grandmother grew up. He also rents farmland from his grandfather.

Sydney was raised in Marion, and although she wasn't accustomed to farm life, she is learning to adjust to country life and the long hours and inconveniences which sometime come with farming. She works as an occupational
