RGT LANTERN G4H WINTER WHEAT
THE HARD WHEAT THAT BEATS ALL IN THE SECOND WHEAT SLOT. challenges around disease in the future and large domestic markets for feed wheat, the variety will appeal to growers looking to reduce production risks without sacrificing yield potential. “KWS Cranium is yielding within 1 per cent of the highest-yielding variety on the Recommended List, and is part of a select few varieties that combine a septoria score of 6 and above, and a yellow rust score of 8 and above. “These two particular diseases are the most challenging in terms of yield penalty, so to have high genetic resistance is an advantage. Late-sown performance is particularly strong.” The other new hard Group 4 feed wheat is Wolverine from RAGT – first to be awarded the new specialist BYDV-resistant category. However, its yield is a little behind the leading feed varieties, and resistance ratings of 5.3 for septoria and 5 for yellow rust may put off some growers. Mr Gosling of AHDB pointed out, however, that this BYDV resistance makes Wolverine a particularly talked-about variety, and suggested it will be interesting to see how the market takes it up. He noted that, while AHDB doesn’t know of any other wheat varieties coming through the national trials system with BYDV resistance at the moment, there are a few barley varieties coming through from breeders, so expects wheat will catch up with this in the future. The final new winter wheat is the soft Group 4 variety Swallow, which was bred by Blackman Agriculture and will be marketed by Senova, with recommendation for the North region. The limited
data reveals it has a relatively early and good yield, which will appeal to northern growers. However, its main talking point is that it has been rated good for distilling, with consistent performance over the last three years – comfortably outperforming all other varieties in 2020 distilling tests.
Spring barley The single spring barley feed variety added is Cadiz from Senova, with recommendation for the East and West regions – with treated yields of 105 and 106 respectively (based on limited data). Its untreated yield of 94 suggests good disease resistance. Specific weight is good at 67.4.
Winter barley Three new two-row feed barley varieties all offer UK treated yields of 106 per cent of controls. KWS Tardis has a specific weight of 69.1, with a good disease package and untreated yield. Following the company’s Sowing for Peak Performance (SPP) principles to help growers meet future production challenges headon, KWS Tardis combines UK-wide yield potential with consistent performance in a wide variety of growing conditions, says KWS’ Kirsty Richards (left). “The variety is particularly strong in the East of the country, and performs well on light soils – although it is best on heavy ones, where yields are at 110 per cent of controls.” Barley yellow mosaic virus resistance, allied to stiff straw and superb in-field performance, make it a great choice for growers looking for a simple and reliable way to expand their rotations
