Royal Highland Show

Best of Scottish farming

Celebrating its 179th year, The Royal Highland Show takes place in Edinburgh on the 20th, 21st, 22nd & 23rd June and is one of Scotland’s most iconic events, showcasing the very best of Scotland’s livestock, machinery, food and rural life, says organiser the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland (RHASS). The four-day event involves over 1,000 trade exhibitors, 2,150 livestock competitors with over 6,500 animals, as well as many other attractions from forestry to food. The ‘Grand Parade’ is hugely popular at the Show, says RHASS, and the Grandstand fills up quickly in the afternoons of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Prize-winning cattle are paraded across the Main Ring headed-up by stock persons carrying display boards that bear the names of the breeds they are leading. This is a very rare opportunity to see so many different breeds at one time, adds RHASS. The 2019 Technical Innovation Awards will be presented at the Show. They encourage and recognise innovation in the design and manufacture of machines,

equipment and appliances which advance the effective and efficient practice of either agriculture, horticulture, equestrian, forestry, renewable energy or estate services. With a historic reputation for recognising and rewarding excellence, the RHASS Technical Innovation Awards have become an important and influential accolade within the agricultural and rural industries. RHASS chief steward of Technical Innovation, Christo Shepherd, commented: “Technical innovation holds the key to unlocking the potential of Scotland’s agricultural and rural industries, whether in keeping with the industry, improving the environment, promoting best practice or ensuring operator safety and comfort. “The RHASS Technical Innovation Awards provide a unique and highly regarded means to promote new ideas, whether conceived in the farm workshop or on the test benches of multinational manufacturers. I look forward to celebrating the innovations that have been developed over the past year at this year’s Royal Highland Show.” ■

The farm machinery lines are always popular for visitors to the Royal Highland.

The very best of livestock can be seen at the Show.
