About People Terry Johnson 1935–2018 When Terry first met Bet he was working as a welder and over the next nine years he had nine jobs – including as Corona and a Sunblest man, and at one time he had three jobs at once. After working for Pettit at Moulton, Terry began at PB Bettinson & Co in Holbeach, starting on the shop floor and working his way up to foreman and then on to works manager, visiting several countries during his time with them including Australia, Zimbabwe, Canada and the USA. When Bettinsons was taken over by Hestair Farm Equipment in 1976, Terry remained as works manager there for 10 years. However when Hestair informed him that it was pulling out of the farming industry in 1986, he set up business on his own taking on some of the products – and Terry Johnson Ltd was born.

Boston Road Business went very well in the early years in rented premises at Boston Road, but in the early 1990s the landlord had an offer

from a well known supermarket to purchase the site. Terry was looking for other suitable premises in the area to enable him to keep his loyal workforce, when the opportunity came along to buy Peter Cunnington’s Swift Lift business, together with his factory in Cranmore Lane, which is where Terry Johnson Ltd remains today. Terry continued to work in the business until he was 70 when he passed over the reins to Paul and Mandy, but he would sometimes call in to the factory mostly for a social visit or for the Annual General Meeting. Many tributes to him from former employees and work colleagues have been given to the family and the general consensus was that, while he may have been known as a bit of a hard taskmaster, that was usually followed by “but he was fair”. Terry had several hobbies during his life – playing football for Holbeach St Marks and Moulton, as well as enjoying shooting. He also loved horse

racing and for several years he’d have a little flutter most days. In 1978 Terry and a friend bought their first racing greyhound and this led to a passion that lasted for well over 30 years – at one time he had four racing dogs. The family often enjoyed fun days out together at Wicksteed Park, Northants and at Brancaster beach in Norfolk when the children were young, and he also enjoyed holidaying with friends, but he was not keen on venturing too far by air – remembering the long journeys he had often endured with Bettinsons and the time spent in airports – his trip to Canada and the US in the 1970s included 13 flights in 12 days! Unfortunately, a couple of days after returning from the last holiday (to Scotland in mid April), Terry felt unwell. His condition deteriorated and he passed away on the morning of the 20th April in Pilgrim Hospital, Boston. Terry’s passing, although a huge shock to everyone, was very peaceful and for this his family is eternally grateful.
