Sprayers
High-performance sprayer for smaller farms Horsch’s Leeb 5 LT.
The Leeb LT trailed sprayer is the ideal choice for smaller farms, according to manufacturer Horsch. While Horsch’s Leeb GC is wellsuited to large farms, the LT was developed for smaller to mediumsized operations that do not need a large capacity machine. The LT is described as an entrylevel machine and offers features including the BoomControl Pro system, close nozzle spacing and pneumatic control and continuous cleaning system. The BoomControl Pro is designed to keep the boom as close to the crop as possible. Horsch research
shows that distance from the crop is the key factor in reducing drift and increasing crop penetration. The Leeb 4 LT, 5 LT and 6 LT trailed sprayers feature plastic tanks with 4,000, 5,000 and 6,000 litre capacities respectively and all feature the BoomControl Pro system. Available in three specification levels from ECO to CCS then CCS Pro, the top model is equipped with a modern electronic system at the suction and pressure side. All models have a 500 litre fresh water tank. Leeb LT boom widths range between 18m–42m, with the new larger boom widths up to 42m also available for the Leeb GS. Additional features including nozzle switching, steering axle with its own gyroscope and load sensing hydraulics to assist the tractor hydraulic systems are also available, allowing smaller farm operations to have high performance sprayers with small capacities. ■

RW Walpole machinery manager Kevin Brandon and sprayer operator Kevan Watts.
A Norfolk soft fruit grower has improved its crops and reduced wastage thanks to a custom-built fan-based sprayer used for delivering fungicides. RW Walpole is a large-scale commercial grower based at Terrington St Clement in west Norfolk. Last year managers approached Team Sprayers of Ely to develop a fan-based sprayer that could be used to treat crops – particularly field-scale strawberry crops including big canopy varieties like Christine. The crop is planted in 36in spaced rows. The resulting Team ‘Air Fan’ has now completed its first season and machinery manager Kevin Brandon is delighted with the results. “Overall performance is a lot better than the system we were using before. We are getting a much cleaner crop with more fruit and less wastage.” The new sprayer has achieved around 40ha/week with 10–15 fungicide applications across the season as recommended by
agronomists from Berry Gardens. Application rates are adjustable from 600–1,500 litres/ha. The 12-row machine has a 3,000 litre tank, based on Team’s Leader range. Each row is targeted by adjustable mist blowers operating off a powerful air fan system which blows the leaves aside, ensuring efficient canopy penetration and drastically reduces mildew and crop wastage. A Muller Basic terminal in the cab displays all functions for simple operation. All in all, the new sprayer is, “a highly capable bit of kit” says Kevin. R W Walpole also has table top strawberry crops where a Team modified sprayer is used in the tunnels. Team has also supplied a dedicated Turbomatic’ blackberry sprayer. ■
