forestry equipment, with skilled operators, can be hired from the business and the fleet includes: three AHWI RT400 tracked forestry mulchers; a John Deere 1490D biomass baler; two excavatorbased mulchers with secondengine power-packs and a range of mulching heads, stump grinders and other attachments. These are supplemented by a range of forestry-specification excavators, with high-flow hydraulics and a full range of tree shears, flail heads, grapples, rakes and rippers. The hire fleet also includes smaller mulchers such as an AHWI RT200 and a Fecon FTX128L LGP tracked machine, which will work on poor ground as well as between standing trees – for rhododendron clearance, for example. Kingwell also sells a range of used machinery and it is exhibiting at the CONFOR Woodland Show, Longleat Estate (7th and 8th September). ■
An end to overgrown hedges and neglected woodland A specialist contractor says that increased mechanisation is now making coppicing an affordable option for landowners. Based in Peasenhall, Suffolk, Collins Farming and Forestry Services serves Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, specialising in hedge and woodland coppicing, wood chipping for biofuel, ditching and all types of excavator work. Reclamation of ponds and the relaying of yards and tracks also form part of the company’s regular workload, in addition to more conventional services such as mole draining and cultivations. However, coppicing and biomass chipping now form a major part of the company’s operations. Increased mechanisation has resulted in a reduction in cost per metre of coppicing, making this type of work more affordable than ever, it says. The management, reclamation and renovation of overgrown hedges and neglected woodland are now viable propositions. If the coppice is of good enough
quality, it might be possible to derive an income from timber for fuel as woodchip, which often covers the cost of coppicing and can produce a net return to the landowner. Collins Farming and Forestry Services is investing in facilities to force-dry wood chip for fuel, and is a Biomass Suppliers List registered wood chip supplier. Both the coppicing and chipping operations are useful in site clearance work and this is a part of the company’s workload that’s increasing, having recently worked on the East Anglia ONE electricity transfer line construction project.
