Brief History and Description about School of Pharmacy Pharmacy higher education program at ITB was established on October 6th, 1947, held by the Department of Pharmacy which had been managed under the coordination of a faculty named Faculteit voor Wiskunde and Natuurwetenschapen. At that time, this faculty was a part of the University of Indonesia. On February 1st, 1949, the name of this faculty was changed to the Faculty of Exacta and Natural Sciences (Fakultas Ilmu Pasti dan Ilmu Alam, FIPIA), and it was still as a part of the University of Indonesia. The organization structure was very simple, with only one person responsible for managing the department, but since 1959, the organization was expanded and a Secretary of Department was assigned to help the Head of Department. In 1953, Prof. dr. Raden Mohammad Djuhana Wiradikarta, one of the academic staff of Pharmacy Department, was the first Indonesian citizen who became the Dean of FIPIA, until 1959.

On March 2nd, 1959, Faculty of Engineering and FIPIA started to join and formed a new institution, named Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and the pharmacy education became a part of Department of Chemistry – Biology (Departemen Kimia-Biologi, DKB).

After reorganization in 1973, the Department of Pharmacy was then operated as an important part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam, FMIPA), until 2005. Up to 1987, the Department of Pharmacy organization was supported by scientific divisions, i.e. pharmaceutical chemistry, formulation, pharmaceutical biology, and pharmacology. Each division named as section (seksi) was a group of staff with interconnected knowledge, or a group of basic and applied science in pharmacy fields that covered theoretical and practical education, and research activities.

Each section consisted of lecturers, under the supervision of one senior staff as a head of the section. He or she was responsible for developing and managing the section in giving lectures, laboratory practices and coordinating some research projects. Each laboratory was managed and supervised by the head of the laboratory and every academic staff in the department has their own responsibility in giving lectures, assisting laboratory activities and conducting their research projects. This academic organization was gradually improved and developed and to date, the School of Pharmacy has five research groups, i.e.

Pharmacochemistry, Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Biology, Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy, and Sports Science.

In early 1947, the Department of Pharmacy enrolled high school graduates who held B certificates, such as HBS, AMS, VHO or High School. The language used in delivering the lecture was Dutch or English. The duration of education was 5.5 years, consisted of 3 years for bachelor and 2.5 years for doctoral levels.

The graduates had an opportunity to proceed to postgraduate level if they had passed at least one major subject (hoofdvak) and two minor subjects (bijvak). For example, the major subject was chemistry, and the minor subjects were botany, zoology, and physics. The curriculum was not well structured, and there was no limitation in graduation time. Started in 1951, some more subjects were added into the curriculum according to the required education system. Since there was a desperate need for pharmacists in the society, the government through the Department of Education of Republic of Indonesia issued the regulation on the duration of pharmacy study in the university into 4 years, which was consisted of 1-year preliminary study, 1-year candidates study, and 2-year pharmacy study.

In 1960, the duration of pharmacy education was changed into a 6-year study, consisted of 5-year undergraduates study and 1-year professional study.

The curriculum was also amended and adjusted to the required educational system. Some new subjects were included in the curriculum such as English, military education, prescription, etc. In 1973, there was a significant improvement in ITB, in which all the first-year students entered a common first-year level (Tahap Persiapan Bersama, TPB).

They could choose into any department only after they passed the first-year study. The study was followed by the credit system, in which the student could select a number of subject’s credits for a maximum of 24 credits per semester. This system allowed the student to manage their own capability in finishing their study. The curriculum is evaluated and revised every 5 years, and it was arranged according to the development of pharmaceutical science and technology and clinical pharmacy in Indonesia. The current curriculum is the 2013 version.

Besides undergraduate program, School of Pharmacy offers master and doctoral programs. There were 4 options in master and doctoral program, i.e. pharmacochemistry, pharmaceutics, natural product pharmacy, pharmacology, and toxicology. Professional degree in pharmacy is also offered in a 1-year Apothecary Education Program which covers lectures, internship, and comprehensive exam. The program is offered to a bachelor of pharmacy, and the graduate will then be granted as a Registered Pharmacist.

In 1996, the Department of Pharmacy had a chance to get a new beautiful architectural building, named Laboratorium Teknologi (Labtek) VII, located at the center of the ITB campus, next to the Electrical Engineering and FMIPA Building.

With an area of 6579 m2, Department of Pharmacy ITB tried to optimize the facilities and buildings to serve the students and the stakeholders. In addition, many advanced instruments and facilities had been installed and supported by qualified staffs. The aforementioned facilities are utilized to ultimately prepare the Department of Pharmacy ITB to become the best pharmacy higher education provider in Indonesia.

Since August 29th, 2005, Department of Pharmacy changed its status into School of Pharmacy with a level that is equivalent to Faculty. By 2006, undergraduate program at the School of Pharmacy diversifies into two study programs, i.e. Pharmaceutical Science & Technology (Sains & Teknologi Farmasi, STF) and Clinical & Community Pharmacy (Farmasi Klinik & Komunitas, FKK) study programs.

Educational System School of Pharmacy ITB offers four study and education programs : 1. Undergraduate study program is normally completed within 4 years of full time study.

2. Master study program is normally completed within 2 years of full time study with completion of a thesis is required for the degree.

3. Doctoral study program takes approximately 3 to 4 years of full time study and research, including completion of a dissertation.

4. Apothecary (Pharmacists) education program takes approximately 1 years of full time study, including apprentice (internship) in the pharmacy services.

Undergraduate Program comprises at least 144 semester credits and at the most 160 credits which are divided into three levels: 1. Common First Year (TPB) zas a preparatory level with 36 semester credits.

2. Bachelor (Sarjana) Level with minimum of 108 semester credits.

Undergraduate program students with high achievement are eligible to continue their studies to master program as an integrated part of the undergraduate program. Undergraduate program graduate with very high achievement are eligible to enroll directly to the doctoral program.

As for master program and doctoral program, the student could choose their graduate program one of four area of interest: 1. Pharmacochemistry 2. Pharmaceutics 3. Natural Product Pharmacy 4. Pharmacology-Toxicology

Pharmaceutical Analysis

Initially, the Department of Pharmacochemistry consists of two main scientific subgroups, namely: Pharmaceutical Analysis and Medicinal Chemistry. The department resources support all series of research activities in the fields of Pharmaceutical Analysis, Clinical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Food Analysis and Safety, and Medicinal Chemistry.

Department of Pharmacochemistry fosters and develops pharmaceutical chemistry science (pharmaceutical chemistry), which is one of the branches/pillars of Pharmaceutical Sciences which is in the search and discovery of drug compounds, analysis and quality assurance of drugs related to chemical aspects and molecular structure of drugs and other related compounds.

The science of Pharmaceutical Chemistry continues to grow, both at national and international levels.

Department of Pharmacochemistry already has a relatively wide network, both at national and international levels.

At the national level, Department of Pharmacochemistry is active in scientific organizations, including: Perakmi (Association of Indonesian Medicinal Chemistry), and is also active in organizing scientific activities at the national level Permi (Indonesian Society for Microbiology). Department of Pharmacochemistry lecturers have also initiated the establishment of the Association of Indonesian Pharmaceutical Scientists.

At the international level, the members of Department of Pharmacochemistry are also active in establishing networks with various relevant parties from various countries in holding scientific meetings, including ICCST (International Conference on Computation for Science and Technology), and CADD (Computer Aided Drug Design).

The Department of Pharmacochemistry flagship programs are including the fields of Education/Teaching, Research, and Services are described as follows.

Education Department of Pharmacochemistry develops various courses for the Bachelor of Pharmacy Science and Technology and Clinical and Community Pharmacy undergraduate programs.

Postgraduate education at the Department of Pharmacochemistry aims to facilitate students to deepen their knowledge through master's or doctoral programs in analytical pharmacy, medicinal chemistry, analytical toxicology, microbiology and bioprocesses, clinical biochemistry and analysis and food safety.

Research 1. Development and validation of analytical methods for pharmaceutical preparations, cosmetics and food products containing various components of active substances or nutrients, as well as analysis of contaminants. This relates to the needs and problems faced by the pharmaceutical, traditional medicine, cosmetic and food industries.

2. Design, synthesis and in vitro testing of porphyrin compounds, chlorophyll and their derivatives as anti-cancer candidates, photosensitizers, and radiopharmaceutical ligands. This research involves collaboration with international institutions.

3. Screening and repurposing compounds from plants and marine biota in Indonesia, and databases as candidates for anticancer, antiviral, and drug candidates for the therapy of other diseases.

4. Development of quinine alkaloid derivatives as chiral selectors, new generation anti-malarial drug candidates, and aversives (bitter substances).

5.

Production of natural sweeteners (Stevia) as pharmaceutical excipients and food additives.

6. Development of bio preservatives as an effort to overcome the misuse of hazardous materials as food preservatives.

7. Development of microbiological analysis methods for pharmaceutical and food products.

8. Isolation and determination of biological activity of microbial metabolites from soil and marine environments.

9. Development of analytical methods (biochemistry) for clinical and therapeutic diagnosis.

10. Food safety testing and evaluation.

11. Product halal testing.

Social Services 1. Analytical method development services for medicinal active substances, traditional medicines, cosmetics, impurities (impurities).

2. Quality testing services for various products, including drugs, cosmetics, food, household health supplies, and certain non-electro-medical medical devices.

Department of Pharmaceutical Biology

Indonesia is rich of biodiversity which might reserve the highly potential drugs. It mandates a wiseful exploitation inherent in the process of the drugs evaluation, standardization, and development that should be built on a strong comprehension of pharmacognosy and phytochemistry knowledge. Currently, we face a significant increase in the use of herbal products, reflected by the rising number of traditional medicine producers with highly diverse products from Jamu (traditional medicine preparation), standardized herbal product, and phytopharmaca.

Government policy about scientification of jamu has emphasized the importance of scientific approaches on the correct use of traditional medicine. Additionally, other medicinal ingredients based on natural resources have evolved rapidly. The discovery of new drug entities from novel lead compound is in line with the advance of science and technology. In addition to medical purpose, the use of natural product also covering cosmetics, foods, functional foods, and supplement products. Therefore, a continuous development is needed to support the broad application of natural products.

The department of Pharmaceutical Biology is encouraged by all available resource and facility to actively engage with the stakeholders to develop the research, education, and community development programs on native Indonesian natural products.

Pharmaceutical Biology

Pharmaceutical biology is an applied pharmaceutical discipline based on biological science that concerns with the discovery, development, and production of a drug which also includes the process of drug standardization and quality control. It is is supported by many areas of knowledge such as cytology, genetic, microbiology, botany, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, natural product chemistry, biological molecule, pharmacology, toxicology, biotechnology and pharmacognosy. In this regard, pharmacognosy involves the knowledge related to the drug and additives ingredients from living organism (microbe, plants, and animals). Thus, pharmacognosy is often defined as pharmaceutical biology in a narrow sense

Community Services : Department of Pharmaceutical Biology services provided included extract and crude drug standardization using analysis method that given acurate and valid results. We provided marker compound for quality control testing on extract and crude drug. Beside that, we provide services in short-course workshop for those who interest on continuous learning services. In last 2 year, Department of Pharmaceutical Biology funded by DIKTI doing coaching and training into herbal medicine small-industries (IKOT) for developing production, quality, and market of herbal medicines.

ABOUT US

The Department of Pharmaceutics in School of Pharmacy, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) is one of the pharmaceutical disciplines related to the design and development of pharmaceutical preparations that are ready for effective and safe administration. Pharmaceutics Department consists of four sub-groups, namely: (1) Pharmaceutical Technology of Solid Dosage Form, (2) Biopharmacy and Pharmacokinetics, (3) Pharmaceutical Technology of Liquid-Semisolid Dosage Form and (4) Pharmaceutical Biotechnology.

In education, Pharmaceutics Department is responsible for 60 courses in undergraduate programs (Pharmaceutical Science and Technology & Clinical and Community Pharmacy), Pharmacist professional program, as well as graduate programs (Master in Pharmaceutical Science, Master in Industrial Pharmacy, and Doctoral program).

The members of Pharmaceutics Department also actively conduct research. In 2019-2020, there are 48 research topics funded by ITB, Ministry of Education and Culture Indonesia, Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), Indonesia Toray Science Foundation (ITSF), etc.

Some of the research topics are related to nanotechnology, development of new drug delivery systems, pharmaceutical crystallography, along with the development of vaccine and diagnostic kit, one of which is for COVID-19, with Dr. Aluicia Anita Artarini acting as the coordinator of ITB COVID-19 vaccine research development and Dr. Catur Riani joining the whole genome sequencing of COVID-19 working group.

Department (KK) of Sports Science has 4 (four) scientific sub-groups, namely; (1) exercise physiology; (2) sports biomechanics; (3) sports nutrition; (4) fitness and public health. These four scientific sub-groups integrate with each other to form a road map for the KK in Sports Science.

Members of the deparment of sports science are also widely asked for their expertise in several organizations such as Dr. Samsul Bahri, M.Kes as a member of KONI Sumedang Regency, Tommy Apriantono, Ph.D as Chairman of PSSI West Java, and many others. In addition, several times the opportunity to get research grants from the Badminton World Federation (BWF), research tools grants from the West Java provincial

Administratively, the KK of Sports Science has a special assignment and is responsible for the management of the following fields: (1).

Implementing sports courses (MKOR) which are compulsory subjects for

government, to the Ministry of Research and Technology. In 2021 KK manages research and community service funds of more than 1 billion.

These funds continue to encourage the contribution of the KK in Sports

all TPB ITB students who teach around 3000 students per year, and arrange theoretical and practical lecture schedules; (2) Implementation of the Master of Sport study program; (3) Responsible for the development of research with research topics covering each scientific sub-group, source of funds, and level of dissemination of research results; (4) provide scientific competence services to the academic community
