Chameleon’s Iris :

Insignia of motion between natural and artificial Mr. Wan Zulkifali, Mrs Nik farhanah, Mrs Liyana Hasnan This exercise is intended to expose students on the basis and fundamental to the integration of researches and a most plausible method in reinterpreting nature’s essence.

Final outcome from nature’s interpretation which conveying the complexity within simplicity of Chameleon’s Iris

For Chameleon’s Iris, a deep and comprehensive study has been done in order for a characteristics of chameleon to be conveyed through the manipulation of patterns and shapes. Thoroughly, most intriguing elements of nature lies within its motion and effortless in its texture’s complexion. Hence, the artworks completed tends to portray the textures’ complexity/within the simplicity of a spoon. These arrangements and patterns of the spoon suggest the motion of a Chameleon’s iris.

Kunang - Kunang : Imploring the Nature

Mr Fairuz Reza, Mr Jamsyid Idrus, Mr Zulfadhli Salleh As per se, most interesting element lies within nature itself which somehow seems unlimited yet uniquely exist. Through a comprehensive study from our surrounding, things can be analyzed and mimicly reproduced in imitating the essence of nature.

Elevations of the sculpture; the powerful elements of its light emmisivenss can vividly be seen through the application of materials and modular arrangements.

15

From Kunang-Kunang, this exercise emphasizes the exquisity and uniqueness of the fauna in its own habitat that gives them the vital signature of themselves. From the extraction of a firefly, an exotic insects discovered in Bukit Cherakah Park, a series of researches and interpretations of ideas had been done in order to derive an avatar-like scupture in reinterpretating the firefly hence extracting its very own essence and unique elements. To enhance the characteristics of firefly, sculpture made need to symbolize the embodiment of its pure form.

The Rang :

Conceptualizing movement | Motion abstraction Mr Fairuz Reza, Mr Jamsyid Idrus, Mr Zulfadhli Salleh In an attempt to measure the immeasurable, movement/motion seems to possess a characterthat cannot be seen with naked eyes yet create a force which is potentially sculpted.

A coexist form of energy can be physicalize through body of work which imitates major component in human anatomy, such as bones and joints. These body of works can be replicate into a form of sculptural-hanging-like in order to emphasize the movement

An exploration requires a throroughly understanding and tends to be limitless. Thus, precedent will set the boundary and perimeter of the directions within the language used. By tracing the master’s philosophical thinking and his/her approach, a project will neither be meaningless nor lack of practicality NeoHammock demonstrates the applications and understaning extracted from the master Santiago Calatrava which emphasizes on aesthetical, yet state-of-the-art in terms of structural quality. 22

The parasitic strcuture which clings on the roof of the ‘gazebo’ tends to look alienated. Architectural language of the parasite which takes a futuristic form is intended to look contrary to the initial event spaces below it which runs along the jetty. In order to create a functional space atop of the event spaces below it, a huge difference in architectural language needs to be applied as it also portrays a progression in a period of time. The functional spaces occupying the parasitic structure is occupied by ‘keropok lekor’ kiosk.

In the heart of Kuala Terengganu, Pasar Payang to be precise, there exist a jetty which was once occupied by merchants from all over the South China Sea but as times passed by, the jetty is currently dilapidated and lack of use due to the modernization of land transportation. In order to rejuvenate its functionality, local specialty need to be injected to the area as a remedy to the gloomy ambience of the event space right along the jetty.

Modularical Beannie : Comfortness x Jointing

Mr Hailane Salam, Mr Jamsyid Idrus, Mrs Harlina Mohd Ali Anthropometric and ergonomy is undoubtedly essential in the fundamentals of designing. Its basic yet critical elements that actually justifies the subject’s practicality and aesthetic value. This exercise imply student to explore naked-jointing without the use of any adhesive medium. Throughout the design development, geometric form has been identify as a potential form of structural durability which can uphold a massive amount of weight especially when the jointing is made up of the structure itselves. Triangular shape can be considered as the ultimate form of durability due to the rigidity of its sides, which allows them to transfer load more evenly than any other shapes. Modularity enhances the sturdiness of the structure. The joints was designed in a way that it functions as a stretcher/absorber from the sitting impact of the user, hence providing an extra comfortness to the user while he/she sits to enjoy the evening

27

Due to its flexibility and lightweight, the user can shoulder it as a backpack to make it mobile friendly. Flimsy material such as cardboard and box is used and proven to be extra effective as it absorbs the impact of the user while sitting on it. Its structural composition helps it to maintain the formation of the triangular shape.

Kahn’s Superficial Cave :

Reformation of contour through geometry Mr Fairuz Reza, Mr Jamsyid Idrus, Mr Qhawarizmi, Mr Zulfadhli Salleh This project explores the possibility of method and approach in designing based on architect’s philosophical thinking while deriving new intervention to conventional architecture.

33

A series of shadow study is being done to obtain the structural components and outer form

Kahn’s Superficial Cave is a manifestation of Louis Kahn’s major inquisitiveness to geometry shape and rigid form. Through the design phase, a manipulation of geometry has been synthesized to a whole new method which autonomously hybridize Kahn’s principle in altering geometrical form. This project is derived from a reformation of contour from the initial site located at a lake cliff near Gua Tempurung. The reformation of the contour underwent series of development through grids mapped on the initial contour then manipulated holistically. Thus, its optimal form identified according to the integration of the lake and the cliff which creates a utopia environment within the superficial cave. Hence, the hardline of the finalized form can be obtained to achieve the structural components.

The Escapism :

Of peace and Long Beach Mr Fairuz Reza, Mr Jamsyid Idrus, Mr Qhawarizmi, Mr Zulfadhli Salleh Of Peace and Long Beach // The setting takes place circa18th century when a young man named Peace, Charles Joseph Peace, a notorious English burglar from the east side of the Great Britain commited a fatality crime which involves the death of a man, a noble highbred young man. Agonizing the incident which was done without Peace’s full conscious due to his dualistic personality, Peace made his escape to a place far to the east of the map. FARIZ AZAHAR SEMESTER 04

To start with, this project involves an alternate timeline which has been added to Charles Joseph Peace timeline whereby in the original story he was executed for killing a high noble man named Dyson. So, the storylive has been altered accordingly.

Charles Peace in detail is a versatile individual who suffers dualistic personality that transforms himself into a prolific cat burglar, master of disguise and a designer of escape plans. Due to his alter ego which made himself remarkable for his singular aptitude in a variety of abilities such as acrobat, good in taming animals and most impressively, ability to alter the shape of his face. His voyage to the east side of the map lead him to an island which is stunningly breathtaking. But the scenery is not the main reason Peace decided to stay there. For a dualistic personality with a notorious burglar background, Peace hunger for his bad habit which needs to be feed. There, he adapts with the local and the surrounding pretending as a friendly entertainer who performs acrobatic moves during the day where people know him as a very good young man. During the night, Peace’s darkside lingered and enraged to burgle from the cliffside chalet. A wise young man Peace is as he apprehend that chalet invites hundred of rich aristocrats and highborn. Below the cliff, he builds his hideout as the operation spot for his burglary, house for his alter ego to live in and act as an escaped pod.

36

As Peace manages surviving in the Long Beach, he continuously analyzes the topographic, demographic and surrounding condition to be implemented in his burglary plan and escape plan. The information and inventory required then recomposed in his plan which then helps him perfecting his art of burglary. This hideout of his will be the perfect spot for him to spend his dualistic routine, and at the same time seamlessly camouflage to an outsider.

39

From atop of the cliffs where the targeted chalet resides, Peace’s hideout seamlessly blend with theX vast ocean due to its rooftop pool that serves as his alternate access to the hideout. People will only able to witness the upper part of the hideout which segregated from the lower part of the house that serves as darkside-Peace’s escape pod.

The hybridization of spa, sauna and indoor skydiving gives an alternative for youngsters and oldsters to mingle around

Cross section of the initial building showing how activities and systems is injected into an old conventional building.

Taiping has been well known for its peacefulness and free of those hassle of a city. Oldster’s preferred retirement city while youngsters keep adding up in number. In order to create a symbiosis between these two range of age groups, an intervention of conventional programs need to be synthesized through program hybridization. Through activities reinvention, tourist and locals tend to explore and experience an ambience that seems new to the initial scene, a paramount role in achieving great impact in urban development.

Ruinophilia :

Decaying monumental suggest various perspectives Ms Rashidah Abd Rahman, Mr Makhtar, Mr Zulfadhli Salleh

Site analysis involving, temperature, heat distribution, water body and vegetation is collected for design justification

Continuation from the previous project, Ruinophilia takes over a whole non existing building which takes up the same programs but in wider perspectives holistically. This project, sited at the panoramic Lake Garden of Taiping which is literally at the edge of the lake. Taiping Lake Garden was originally a mining ground before it was abandoned and converted into a public garden. Some intensive yet analytical studies have been done throughout the site in order to explore the key features and uniqueness of the most suitable spot.

48

FARIZ AZAHAR SEMESTER 05

Before Lake Gardens was converted into a public park, the site was just a mining ground which upholds number of English colonial building that stands proudly overlooking the lake. Currently, what remains of the building are only the brick pillars which has become remnants of the past. Ruinophilia explores the possibility of a parallel nature that can be explained through escaping the irreversibility of time. By means, the past that could have been, and the future that never took place. Explaining parallel nature, nostalgia which is a remnant of the past has a utopian element, but it is no longer directed toward the past either, but rather sideways. It is an experiment using the ruinous atmosphere of the site as a specific potential in order to interrelate with the evolved infrastructure of the surrounding and to give a long-term perspective. Hence, the creation of a new cultural landscape in the existing ruin would unveil an atmosphere of the unformed in contrast to an accurate urban infrastructure in a sophisticated setting. This project indirectly defines the intimate collaboration between human and nature.

Steam Study Apparatus // The idea of the project is to integrate a transgressive form of artificial act upon a vague ambiguous elements within a nature’s essences. The apparatus was designed thoroughly for its effectiveness in displaying a planar interface of a three dimensional form of a vague object. Thus, the ‘interrogation’ of the steam can be analyzed through vectorization within the grided box. Steam/smoke movement then can be truly apprehended as it could not be read by human’s eye static positioned view from a single perspective. The apparatus is intended to clarify the progressive growth and motions of the smoke in order to enhance the visibility within the steam environment. To identify and scrutinized an ambience within a foreign environment is a key process in justfying a situation within a parallel nature which exist at present, phenomenon to be seen but failed to be appreciated. 52

FARIZ AZAHAR SEMESTER 04 Manifestation of the steam movement conveyed through the grided placement which allows a visible entity of the smoke’s profile. The grided apparatus enhance the visibility and at the same time giving the motion of the entity a structured form which encompasses from every elevations. As the steam dispersed to the surrounding, it resembles a singular linear of motion which can be vectorized through the grided apparatus as the transition medium between complete vagueness to an absolute form in between the grids.

Binjai Co-Housing :

Making the intangible tangible Mr Embong Mohamad, Mr Ramli Abdullah Set within an urban landscape along Sungai Damansara, Binjai Co-Housing sets a new landmark across Shah Alam’s skyline altogether with the enormous Stadium Shah Alam and MSU Building. Urban development in Selangor especially Shah Alam as the new major capital city of Selangor recently skyrocketed in the number of maturation and land expansion. Shah Alam’s demographics tend to be denser over time within its unevenly distributed sociological strata. The emerging of students socio-life, industrial establishment and sports recruitment keeps Shah Alam to densify unsystematically while continuously inhibit multiple pros and cons. It is essential for a new way of urban placement to be carried out in order for a population growth to be controlled within the intended distribution. Home may not be defined as a singular house anymore.

63

Site of the proposed Co-housing

Individualistic in current society and complex community seems rather isolated yet detrimental due to the lack of social interaction between neighbourhood and vicinity. House was initially proposed to shelter people from outer negativity which makes humans nurture and harness a sense of protection and enclosure. Ironically, over-enclosed spaces within a community that lives together invites numerous negative effects which makes it irrational for a high rise tp be built sociologically. Thus, let it be community housing sheltered community instead of housing per se. It is a paramount justification in widening the perspectives of community living rather than individualistic living. Co-housing’s conventional method is observed to be a huge failure where its functional purpose is not being used to its full potential wheareas co-housing is a domain for people to be social and response to interaction without any limitation.

67

Prototype of the terrain modification after layering had been done to obtain the hard lines for further designing method

Through the hybridization of the industrial and recreational, how can an effective co-housing be achieved ? The answer lies with market norm where there is a demand, there would be a supply. These rules applied to Binjai Co-Housing as it hosts the gathering of similar interest community collaboration with community of lucky prosthetic-user who gets the chance to experience and undergo training at a rehab communal center. The combination of prosthesist, surgeons, designer, athletes and amputee is a new way of living in community. The proposed projects are not only considered as a training ground for amputee to regain their abilities, but more to research facilities which can contribute to local prosthesist organization for the benefit for the needy. The physicalization of the altered terrain based on the initial terrain are the justification for good training ground for the amputee. The design of the landscape and the hardscape determined was based on the modification of the original terrain after layering over layering. As the intangible layer of the contour is made visible to naked eyes, it somehow suggests for an active movement and exploration due to inquisitiveness and curiosity.

Elevations of the whole structure show a significant gap segregation between the residential area and the commercial area which provides a privacy yet openness to the residences and visitors. It is also designed in a way that the upper part of the building which consists of residential to be contrary to the artificial terrain below it as if it was afloat circulating the common living The centre of the atrium has been designed to be functioned as an event space where it occupies a large courtyard for the use of visitors and residences. 87

The key features of the residential system is its interlocking spaces courtyard for each of four houses, they share the same garden for recreational purpose. The interlocking system defies the conventional housing type and at the same time, sets a new benchmark to a housing typology.

88

The application of Integrated Building System (IBS) also plays an important role in enhancing the building effectiveness in terms of its construction’s cost, assemblyf time and labours cost. The systematic and organized method enable the building to be less costly if compared to conventional way of constructing building.

Experimentation and exploration of structural components allow the building to be built in an oddly manner which the compact yet lightweight enclosure of the building blocks sit on top of a tubular steel in an inverted pyramid shape and anchored by traingular formation tubular steel. Through this construction, enormous spaces below the residential blocks can be used as a recreational and event space which undoubtedly catalyzes the community living. This construction is made possible due to the materials used for the enclosure of the residential blocks which is a lightweight reinforced concrete. Hundreds of space pockets can be made available due to the rationale construction which save up spaces for better functional usage.

Lumut Naval Museum :

Experimentation through imaginative spaces Mr Abu Bakar Abd Raub, Mrs Sharifah Asmah, Mr Jasmin Maritime empire has long gone through the rendition of time which since then, went through series of time that eventually turns the earth’s vast sea into one of the major medium of transportation and locomotion. The appreciation and gratitude upon the sea explorer have to be nurtured throughout public domain via global virality . This project seeks to explore on the fundamentals of designing a good museum which effectively enhances the urban realm of the Lumut’s waterfront. Through the understanding of a large volume of spaces and manipulation of scale and proportion, various other vital elements also play an important role in order to spark the uniqueness in exploring the imaginative journey within the spaces. 97

99

Navy’s routine bound by the exploration of the sea where they spend most of their lifetime. Its reinterpretation as a bounding box which seems invisible to the enclosure world of land. The hardship and struggle faced by them brought untold wisdom but the fear can only be felt by them. Whilst land kingdom peaceful at its best, only a narrow strip channel that linked both worlds.

Photo manipulation suggests system alteration, where testimonial of sea life with its challenges needs to be exposed thoroughly. Hence the channel simultaneously amplified in sizes and numbers, demonstrating the systems being shared by both land and sea. The struggle of the sea life seen by the land, the tranquility of the land motivated the sea life. Boundaries being redrawn for a new manifestation.

Balance and symmetrical composition in maintaining the equilibrium of the ecosystem is highly important for both parties benefit. The alteration of the land’s ecosystem allows a more stable state of peace where boundaries’ rethinking and everything become transparent for both sides. The interaction of both land and sea can now be actively integrated without any formal boundaries or divisions.

Conceptual Reinterpretation Rethinking boundaries // Private, semi public, public has long been a debated issue on how to control and set the perimeter of the domain where interrelation and intraconnection betwen them occurs. A simple reinterpretation has been manifested where it challenges the limitation of the boundaries themselves. The limit of boundaries not been controlled by the axes of x, y, and z only, but in wider perspectives, they share the same medium of interconnection where the spatial being held. Spatial demarcation allows a new way of systems to be experimented. Where inside does not mean inside anymore and likewise, outside and vice versa. Either of them can be at both states at the same time.

104

To create a sense of curiosity throughout the spaces and induce movement, as well as driving force through the narrow passage that would open into a larger volume It’s similar as if one is experiencing gliding down a water tube with water awaiting at the end of it. This theory suggests that peoples desire for coherence is disrupted by something that is unfamiliar, uncertain, or ambiguous. Its curiosity-driven theory that attempts to gather information and knowledge of the unfamiliarity to restore coherent thought processess once again.

To seek for a seamless environment while responding to the contextual feature as one is forced under the low roof plane that captures the adjacent outdoor court as well as the interior moments which induces circulation and continuous experience During the process of discovery and rediscovery, the low stature of the building narrowing the visitor’s line of vision thus forcing one to adjust to the views framed.

105

To cancel the formal partition between the internal and the external while maintaining their intimacy, familiarity, privacy and formality. Interlocking and interconnecting method would emphasize the spatial demarcation and expansion of spaces through denseness and intenseness The linear route through those particular spaces helps direct the user’s gaze with a perception of transitioning through spaces vaguely and undefinely.

The appearance of floating Gives the volume a sense of weightlessness that fluctuates between enclosure and canopy and at the same time allows life outside to penetrate inside.

framework

Imaginative Spaces // Selectively chosen images via subjective precedent on how gallery should be acts as a platform where all of the four frameworks are reevaluated. An imaginative spaces can be testified through a body of work which can be defined as a clear symbolism for each of the components. To make simplification, the same pallette from a painting is then extracted and repainted to get a better mood, ambience, and representation in their own unique way. Through the framework of red, yellow, blue, and green, these elements will be reimagined through the images and hybridized into a mixture of qualities. A meaningful way of interlocking and superimposing these qualities, the spaces will assume a depth and richness. In order to achieve them, form and construction, appearance and function are no longer separated. They belong together and form a whole.
