Hitchville, Spike’s Bar & Grill, Faribault Friday, December 6 A couple years ago, Spike’s Bar & Grill in Faribault decided that they were going to be the premier music venue in the area. They upgraded their stage area, added lighting, and made a major investment in their sound system. The bar was extended to run parallel to the dance floor, and more video monitors were added. The result is an outstanding space for both the performers and the audience.Spike’s also decided to start booking the top regional acts. Just in the last couple months Lost Highway, the Jerry Rodes Band, Chris Brooks and the Silver City Boys, and Hicktown Mafia have all played there. On December 6th, they’re bringing Hitchville back to their stage, and that’s a show you do not want to miss. Those of you who have already seen them know what I’m talking about when I say this band is the whole package. Heidi Owens and Matthew Kneefe don’t just provide movie star good looks, but also fantastic harmony rich vocals. The rest of the band is a tight unit with each player bringing something fantastic and unique to the table. Fiddle player Marv Gohman would be worth the price of admission on his own. Block out the 6th on your calendar, get over to Spikes and have a fantastic night. – – Rich Larson, editor@southernminnscene.com

The Swellers: 25-Nov, 7:00 PM, The Cherry Pit, 117 E Cherry St, Mankato, $5+. he Swellers are a straightforward skatepunk band with some pop elements, very much in the tradition of NOFX, Bad Religion, and No Use for a Name. The group’s core trio -- singer/guitarist Nick Diener, bassist Nate Lamberts, and drummer Jonathan Diener -- formed in the small town of Fenton, MI, in the summer of 2002. Following a pair of self-released albums, 2002’s Long and Hard and 2003’s End of Discussion, the trio recorded a full-length debut named Beginning of the End Again and signed to the Ann Arbor-based indie label Search and Rescue Records. Before the album’s release, however, Lamberts bowed out of the band to attend college, making way for new bassist Lance Nelson and second guitarist Garrett Burgett to join in time for the band’s debut cross-country trek on the 2005 edition of the Vans Warped Tour. Mark Cameron Band in Concert: 23-Nov, 9:00 PM, The Busted Nut, 118 2nd Street East, Hastings, Free+. Minneapolis-based singer, songwriter and guitarist Mark Cameron has been active in live music for over thirty years. He began his performing career in the rich folk-rock scene of the early 1970’s and brought this influence into several bands he founded during the 1980’s and 1990’s. Today, Mark’s focus is centered on crafting original Blues songs with strong melodies and memorable lyrics. The range of his material stretches the Blues genre beyond the standard comfort zone with a focus on ‘foot stompin, butt shakin’ music that resonates with a live audience. After five studio releases in the 1980’s and 90’s, Mark turned his focus to the Blues. In 2009, the song ‘Boxcar Blues,’ from ‘Life of Illusion’ became an instant classic and packs the dance floor at live performances every time. In 2011, Mark released the ambitious project, ‘Built to Bust,’ featuring the hipster-swing classic ‘Do Lovin Right’ and the Chicago-Blues romp ‘Tough All Over.’ Mark’s newest release, ‘One Way Ride To The Blues,’ is slated for release this spring. The Mark Cameron Band is consistently a top finisher in Blues competitions over the past several years.. www.thebustednut.com/ Calendar.html.
