Office Building Location: DIFC, Dubai, UAE Category: Commercial Year: 2014 - 2015 Task: Concept, Sketchup modeling, floor plans..

Occupying the last vacant plot in Gate Village, Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), this scheme contains offices and high-end F&B. It was conceived as an extension of the existing development yet required a different approach due to its position at an intersection, with views towards Emirates Towers. Lacasa’s design fused the different architectural languages of the surrounding buildings; the end result is a powerful blue-glass mass with an alternating modular pattern, overlapped by an outer skin of granite, mullions and screens. An abstraction of the DIFC logo was integrated into the structure of the building – a stylised and visually powerful V-shape column carries the main glass mass at the front façade. The client brief required maximisation of the floor plate – this presented a challenge due to the irregular geometry of the site.We were requested to come out with 3 different options of faccades, one to be identical to the existing architectural style, another one to be a bit different with a mix of modern touchous, and the third one to be iconic and different from the surrounding urban fabric. In order to fit within the urban context, designers camouflaged the shape, giving the different impressions of the proposed buildings.

My task was to come up with the iconic option and try to link it cohisively to the surrounding area. So in order to make that achieveable, I had to make the form follow the shape of the adjacent buildings by replacing the stone screening with the crossed structural system, and duplicating the glazing in order to increase the thermal isolation. That structure was adapted from the main gate building in the DIFC and to reflect the identity of the area.

Furnished Apartments Location: Business Bay, Dubai, UAE Category: Hospitality Year: 2013 - 2014 Task: Concept, Revit modeling, floor plans..

Situated in Business Bay, with prized views of the Burj Khalifa, this contemporary-styled tower features 300 apartments with retail elements on the ground floor. The client requested luxuriously-sized apartments, with extensive glazing and balconies to capitalise on views, while accommodating the maximum number of units within the tower. Priority was given to the three-bedroom apartments, which occupy the top levels and enjoy the best views of Burj Khalifa. An initial challenge was the site’s slope of 8m, yet this was used to the project’s advantage to gain extra GFA on one side. A podium was used to house the parking, pool and gym, with the recreational areas also overlooking the Burj. Lacasa’s architects used a ‘contemporary local’ design language, and the material palette of glazing, paint, plaster, solid walls and metal screens is in keeping with other buildings in the area. A curved façade adds panache and dynamism to the overall composition.

One of the most challenging aspects of this project was the huge GFA that we were required to fit in the plot, and to make the building look as slim and delicate as possible. So I had make a special treatment for the facades which is adding different layers while keeping in mind the efficiency and total construction cost. The landscape design was inspired by the layered facade as well as the idea of keeping the gym opened up to the pool. Moreover the different levels that allows all passersby have a view over the pool.

Madain Al Emarat

Location: Dubai, UAE Category: Mixed Use Year: 2014 - 2015 Task: Concept, Sketchup modeling, floor plans..

Located in Dubai, this large mixed-use project is a high-density yet attractive urban development with Mediterranean style architecture. Functioning as a self-contained community, it comprises apartments, restaurants, shops, parks, mosques, nurseries, swimming pools, sports facilities and a 2.5km circuit track, all within a village-like tree-lined environment. A primary retail core with a grocery store is centrally located, overlooking the Village Green. Additional secondary retail, such as cafĂŠs, laundry facilities and salons, is located throughout the site. Apartments are contained in three to eight-storey buildings, designed in Andalusian, Italian and Spanish styles. Units are loaded on each side of a central corridor, with every apartment within 50m of an elevator. Stairs and elevators provide direct access to the street and basement parking levels. In order to achieve an authentic Mediterranean aesthetic, the material palette includes terracotta, stucco, pre-cast or cast-in-place concrete, smooth plaster, painted metal and glass.

I was assigned the job of developing the facades of the Andalusian plots in the project. I started with researching about the authentic Andalusian style and use the common points with the local architecture, to achieve the best of both. We also had to maintain a high level of privacy for the facing private villas. Townhouses were designed while keeping in mind the old traditional Arabic houses with their closed courtyards that provide a cooler sitting area and a more private space.

School Of Art Located in Palestine, on the cliffs of Ramallah.A school of arts was requested to be designed and proposed, a design that will present the Palestinian culture and history. Location: Palestine Category: Educational Year: 2015 - 2016 Task: Facade Concept, Revit modeling and Design.

So we thought of the local woven fabrics and used the shape in the plans design taking into consideration the different levels of the natural land, while maintaining as much as possible of the shape of the real ground,in order to achieve a greener design. While utilizing the natural resources of the area.

Using the main concept of the woven fabrics in the plans had to be reflected in a way or another on the facades themselves. The outdoor amphitheater was carved into the natural contour lines in order to make use of the sloping lands and was partly hid under the building itself to provide some protection.

24

The interiors had to reflect the same heritage that was prominent in the exterior design. Colorful paintings and furniture was added, while keeping the design minimalistic and conducive to learning.

SRS School

Location: Al Warqa’a Dubai Category: Mixed Use Year: 2014 - 2015 Task: Concept, Sketchup modeling, floor plans..

The challenging design brief for this 2,000-student primary school – next to an existing school for higher grades – required a meeting point between the Alhambra palace in Spain and a fantasy castle. Avoiding a kitsch aesthetic, inappropriate for academia, Lacasa’s designers employed an abstract, emotional reference to a castle while maintaining a sense of fun, with coloured mullions and glass panels. The result is a ‘Lego-like’ development with a variety of bold masses and forms placed at different angles, resembling a fragmented castle on undulating terrain. Sleek, contemporary references to the Alhambra include a diverse and urban massing arrangement with pitched roofs. The main entrance to the school is marked by a drum-shaped mass which houses a double-height lobby, a grand staircase, a 600-capacity theatre and a multi-storey ‘Science Discovery’ centre. Classroom units occupy an L-shaped arm, extending out of the drum, which cascades backwards to create a strong visual character and allow for outdoor learning terraces.

Jawan ST

Location: Mirdif, Dubai Category: Residential Year: 2011 - 2012 Task: Concept, Sketchup modeling, floor plans..

The Sheikh Jawaan Street masterplan was conceived in response to the client brief to address the need for a new dynamic master plan that interacts with the future mega park, and add to the street’s existing significance. The project was studied and analyzed in terms of context & urban relationship, massing, zoning, and vehicular & pedestrian circulation. The plot location described in the brief text is 143,000m2, where as in the brief diagram it spans all the way from Al Sadd sreet up to Al Rayyan Street, with a width of around 190m. This amounts to around 239’000m2, and it was this latter size of the plot that was referred to for the development of the project, as in our view it reflected more closely the intent of the client. The masterplan proposed is a dialogue between the two distinct faces of the project: the plots to face the future mega park on the West, and the plots facing the Sheikh Jawaan Street on the East.

My task was to design a mosque which would be iconic, yet minimal and spiritual. The inspiration for my design from the Japanese Zen art which combines these elements. This was made possible with the water feature surrounding the entire structure and streaming down the staircase.

It was my task to do the Spa & Gym facility and the townhouses facade, and was focusing on making the design simple yet rich and lively, allowing the maximum lighted areas to be over looking the main scenery, and providing a peaceful space for the spa and treatment rooms. Natural and contrasting material were used in order to achieve the task and making it stand out.

Musandam Resort

Location: Mirdif, Dubai Category: Residential Year: 2012 - 2013 Task: Concept, Sketchup modeling, floor plans..

The client design brief for the resort project was to create a balance in the design between Omani Arabesque style on one hand, and a fresh contemporary style on the other. The designer’s approach was to achieve a balance between simple white rendered masses, ornamented and filtered by dark timber framework – intended to abstractly resemble ‘mashrabiyyas’. The facade facing the highway is more solid, and its main entrance is marked with an Omani arched porte cochere. The sea facing façade, on the other hand, opens up in its rhythmical treatment to create more views to the sea. The main massing housing the reception acts as a focal point for the overall resort, and is subtly differentiated in its design treatment, and is further highlighted via a grand contemporary archway which is ornamented with a timber arabesque screen.

Lusail Marina

Location: Marina, Qatar Category: Residential Year: 2012 - 2013 Task: Landscape Concept, Autocad & Photoshop

Curvaceous and amorphous, the design of this five-star hotel stands apart from its surroundings and competitor establishments in Lusail. The design stemmed from the client’s drive for a landmark property. Lacasa’s architects created a captivating and iconic form while respecting the location and maximising views to the waterfront. A challenge was to accommodate all the services and facilities required for a five-star hotel while also providing the circulation for the various functions. Exterior materials include stone, painted concrete and glass curtain wall. The organic podium is cut-out to reveal various layers, including a spectacular swimming pool and landscaped areas. Overall, the project involved a concerted team effort to successfully integrate all aspects, such as spatial planning, landscaping and artistic composition.

My Task was to do the landscaping of the surrounding areas. So i took into consideration the requirements of the client wanting an organic design in addition to the Tower design, and tried to maximize the sitting areas, and expand the indoor sitting areas into the outside by either adding outside pedestrian areas or just greenery opening up the inner plan into the outside. Natural raw materials were put into mind while designing, including granite and timber.

In this project I was given the task of designing the landscape, being a very important area in the project, as it counts as the connection and assembly point between the two buildings. Artdeco was the main inspiration as per the client’s request and mainly marble, greenery and pattern carved into the ground were the main elements of the design.
