I have always conceived architecture design process as a chemical reaction. The architectures act as catalyst to transform the local environment with its original elements. The results may vary but the elements will stay. And that’s how I think about the tradition during my five years professional study. It is a fleeting concept that can be utilized into a modern built environment with innovative interpretation. However, we should be particularly critical to the melodramatic and false contextualism, which simply duplicates original architectural forms. Without real life experience, these ostensible profiles will be shallow, empty of vitality. Instead, we are supposed to apply new building techniques and material into the traditional forms. To distinguish itself, one region should learn from the outside and from times while insisting on its own locality. And that is how contextualism can blossom. Wu Liangyong, a prestigious Chinese architect, once said that the city is just like an old parchment that ancient European used to write on. Although people scrub it for continuous use, it will always leave some old traces. I am really found of this metaphor as it vividly illustrates our human construction activities. Architectures has been altered with the metabolism of times. Left are the layout of towns, the neighborhood framework and cultural relic, as well as consequent collective memory and culture. Through future advanced study and practice, I aspire to find and keep hold of the memory that belong to me, my city and our country.

Design Description

Culture Villager

The geographical environment of the project locates in a vacant valley, where small brook, streams are within it. Considering its locality, the design aim to put nature, culture, and context of the site in the first, creating a spot which minimize the human intervention. In the mean time, the residents of city seek a place away from the crowded street filled with high rise buildings, and this arena is the perfect place for that purpose which is also the intention of the farm lords here. Considering the demand of meditation space, I made a thorough investigation about this specific program. The truth about meditation is regression, return to where we come from, and trust what we believe. The most intrinsic quality of meditation space is concerning with vacancy, which means a reduction of artificial space. When people are within this environment, there should be a independent open space for individual thinking and without interruption. So as to the architectural design, I want to pursue a feeling of simpleness, vacancy.

The rural settelments are in different relationship, which all exhibit as a certain connection with terraced fields. The farm activities take place in these farming areas, and the surrounding forests are declining as the expansion of farm work.

RETHINKING OF TRADITIONAL TECTONICS The increasing specialization and industrialization of Qianyi farm led to the decline of farmland diversity such as deforestation. The decline of forestry, especially impact the rural village landscape. The project aims to activate a spot within such a context while sustain farm diversity by critical conservation of site elements.



FARMLAND VITALITY The farmland of great vitality along with farming field forms a spectacular natural landscape, including a camping site, a swimming pool along with many leisure activities. The design will vitalize the site with natural activities.

NATURE INTEGRATION The project approaches the nature by creating a site where people, architecture, landscape and public facilities are within the space. Architectures are always part of the environment as they bond together. The surrounding mountain, bamboo grove and winding river are the first circle. The space enclosed by the groups of architecture is the second circle. And the flow line from outside to interior space such as a tea table are the final circle , all of which forms a psychologically static place for visitors.

Site Context are key to this design. By keeping the original elements such as a residual wall, a cottage, and a pigpen, we can eliminate the human destruction to nature. With some basic renovation and an integral planning of the site, the whole area will rejuvenate and intergrate into the nature.

The residual wall are kept to divide a corridor in front of the guest house. The aperture between them will allow a ray of sunshine which will create a sacred atmosphere for people who lived here

Tea Pavilion

The pavilion utilize bamboo and rammed earth that can be obtained in local environment. It serve as a gathering place where people can drink a cup of tea and relax

LIVE BUILD PROJECT This project intends to construct a 20-days finished teahouse and all of the construction detail, material and build order were fully considered and designed.

AGRITAMENT RURALITY As the first part of the overall design to be built, it aims to activate this area within a short time.This project provides flexible spaces that are capable of switching among different programs. When people come to here for visit, it is an entertainment room, and it can be used as a teahouse for farmlords to take a rest or have a business talk. In front of it lays a land of rock garden that can be very pleasing for urbaner to enjoy their trip back to nature

Culture Miami is on the front lines of climate change. Its famous beaches and waterfront Culture condominiums are projected to suffer significantly with sea level rise in the next 50 years. How can designers address issues of resilience and Villager adaptability at a range of scales, from the district and neighborhood down to the individual building proposal?

The Miami 21 Code is intended to encourage the evolution of a settlement pattern based on the organizational principles of the Transect. The Transect is defined as a geographical cross-section that reveals a sequence of environments. Applied to the human or the built environment, the Transect is used to identify and organize a continuum of the physical environment ranging from the least to the most urban. The riverfront is supposed to generate greater economic, cultural and social influence in the urban area, while it didn’t. The development stops at the gate of the Miami river. We think there are mainly two reasons: a. Vulnerability to flooding, b. Massive transit system cutting our site into fragmented pieces which are owned by different parties. Our strategy is to build a “sea wall” to redefine the riverfront edge, incorporating infrastructure, public amenities and landscape. This part of sea wall could mitigate the effect of sea level rise, reconnect the fragmented parcels along the river. The terrain-like podium actively responds to the changing sea level rise as the whole podium becomes integrated with the public space, while different programs are inserted into three residential towers that could be easily accessed by citizens.

CULTURAL LOOP Under the vision of sequence of thematic nodes, currently segmented blocks are connected into a continuous river walk for dynamic urban activities, which also works as a “seawall” that protects developments behind. Strategies of negotiating, retrofitting, redeveloping and densifying are applied according to specific block conditions


TOWERS ON THE PLINTH The cultural node in the middle of the proposed river walk is also an extension of the downtown institutional corridor to the waterfrontThe cultural programs are integrated into the three housing / office towers. Articulated as a cultural loop, it emphasizes physical accessibility and visual attraction to the urban context. The juxtaposition of public and private, as well as large spectrum of dwelling units, renders the super-block into a "city within one building" concept.

MICRO-MACRO SYSTEM Starting from cellular scale, we approach the design by imaging and shaping an inventory of public activity containers, which are placed along the public loop in the three towers, dispersed but interactive, such as gym, exhibition, auditorium, game room and platform.


UNDULATING SURFACE The project’s dynamic relationship with water is largely achieved by articulating its podium as one undulating typography with programmatic flexibility under different water height conditions. The undulating surface presents a welcome gesture to the potential sea-level rise and unveils different modes of flow: flow of water, and flow of people.

CROSS-SITE SECTION

The existing multi ground level condition and the potential sea-level rise spontaneously render the feasibility of a “vertical city” that dynamically interacts with the water.


GALLERY PLATFORM The cultural programs are integrated into the platforms. Articulated as a cultural loop, it emphasizes physical accessibility and visual attraction to the urban context.


SKY LOBBY Sky lobbies for residential “blocks“ offer outdoor gathering and amenities. The juxtaposition of public and private, as well as large spectrum of dwelling units, renders the super-block into a “city within one building” concept.

Physically, the project can be described as three high-r i se towers on top of an undulating surface(podium) with a public loop connecting the towers at different levels and forming a continuous public loop; The design imagines and shapes an inventor y of public activity containers, which are placed along the public loop in the three towers, dispersed but interactive. T he loop concept rethink s current Miami “towers on the plinth� typology by elevating the public podium activities onto different heights. T he t hree tower s a l so enclose a central "Public Void" w it h t hei r sl ab like massing proportions, which are all divided into three parts by linking platforms. The mid parts of each tower cont a i n one collaborative core that hides during the day and shows off as "Urban Billboards" from dusk to dawn. The towers complex represent dif ferent profi les when viewed from different perspectives: from h i g hw ay, f rom M i a m i r i v e r, f r o m e l e v a t e d railroad, from adjacent developments.


URBAN MIXER The public loop is a social condenser that inclusively attracts and mixes people of different communities. This public inclusiveness as a manifesto is raised up high and showcased to the whole city. In a sense, we view the project more as a romantic revelation to Miami City.

Design Description What is rural maker’s definition nowadays? Why is the phenomenon that urban residents retreat back to countryside? How is urban district connecting with rural areas? This is a collective effort to answer those question: combining the historic cultural heritage in countryside with urban working schema while sustain its original locality. The rural maker hub, which locates at the junction of urban and rural district, is a catalyst for the countryside, as well as a “bridge” that links the urban residents with the rurality. And it aims to build a working & living mode in the countryside to improve working efficiency and living standard of makers. With the recent phenomenon “Counter-Urbanization” , many youngsters go back into the countryside to fight for their career. The site locates at submontane area which is the border of urban and rural district. I try to combine rural construction with urban pursuits, which will build infrastructure for declining countryside and in the mean time, provide basic public system that meet the demand of urban makers.

BRIDGE AS VITALIZATION The second floor of the design are mainly living space for makers and vistors. The aerial bridge connects blocks in different altituede, which is caused by the changes of topography. Besides, the bridge can not only serve as traffic node, but also provide multiple possibilities for spatial activities

BRIDGE VARIATION EVOLUTION

As a way of transportation, the bridge system should be reliable and efficient. The bridge can be a horzontal connection of two points. As the points are adding up, communicative space naturally formed.

The bridges are in different altitude so I design a variable connection point that can be adapted into different topography. And the vertical relationship between architectures is activated by the spatial link.

The blocks follow the contour line to fit with the terrain condition. The local material, bamboo and locality-based construction method are considered in this design. The bamboo are designed as bamboo roof to connect the block of each “maker” space, and beneath the roof there creates an open place where people can communicate, study, entertain and so on.

AMBIGUITY The panel system is meant to be a rain screen providing the first layer of protection from the building as opposed to strong direct light. The various aperture diameters allow a different amount of light to enter or create unique interaction opportunities with the interior. Operable windows, seating, covered spaces, and furniture are all opportunities of such interaction as the apertures extend into the building Similar to standard running bond masonry, this stacking of the circle creates a stable geometric grid. Due to the standard dimension, prefabricated panels can be created that interlock with each other, allowing for a seemingly random pattern

Design Description Stories of human coexist and progress in opposites. About Yin and Yang, brightness and darkness, birth and death, the reverse and obverse, progress and retrogress, highs and lows. Samsara, a dialectical contrary circulation, is a metaphor of life span. Nowadays, on account of the esteem to traditional culture, mystery of the ritual are becoming forms of spiritual shackle. People are fear of death and avoid talking about it because death is regarded as the end of life. We are losing belief of immortal spirit. We want invent a device to revoke peoples’ respect for death, and revive a traditional cultural ritual.

By the evolution of the form of lens, light is changing over time and thus influence space and behavior.


CONDOLENCE

After the “final seven days�, funeral begins with the public condolences. As sun rises, the hall becomes lighting up. During this time, the lenses are concave which dispersed sunlight to imply the beginning of funeral. During the public condolences, funeral guests comes one after another, they shall make homage before the coffin and present flowers.

FISSON

In the session of the family condolences, a representative of family members states the merits and achievement of the departed. As the temperature goes up, the lenses become flat, dividing light into light columns. During the family condolences, family members of the departed hold a memorial ceremony in front of their beloved person.

NIRVANA

At midday, the lenses transform themselves into convex from, which concentrate rays of light. By the end of the funeral, the light in a inverted cone form is a metaphor, to soothe people at the funeral, and to indicate the reincarnation of the soul. By the end of the funeral, all family members stand around the departed for a final farewell as the soul is believed to reincarnate again into a new life.

Design Description “We want a new school�, the students of Zhuxi secondary school express their wishes while staying in the rented houses as their temporary classroom. On April 28, XuPu county were faced with devastating flood,ZhuXi elementary were crashed down. In order to cross the river for the kids to take class, the teachers there made a raft and escort the kids across the river everyday. The architecture nowadays should not only be a asylum, but also shoulder the humane and social responsibility. The design, focused on solving the problems that the natural disasters in Sipsongpanna bring about.




UNDERGROUND PARADISE A channel in large size is designed behind the buildings. When torrential rain or floods come,the water pour into the channel. Letting the underground water pass through the building In the underground, sanitary sewage combined with the floods after they are purified. A large human-access platform is designed. Sanitary sewage and the floods form a landscape here after they are treated, which let human to interact with it

Design Description Woburn is a well-connected suburb located at the intersection of two major highways. Many industrial hubs used to sit along the I93, but the development in the surroundings have pushed the industry out to the suburban area. Like the Widett circle, previously a food market, now proposed for several redevelopment projects. And the assembly square, now becomes a commercial center. The ultimate goal is to create access to modes of transportation beyond the car to facilitate more diverse lifestyles, programs, and use landscape as urban form, amongst a new repertoire of elements to consider and deploy. If the future development pattern in the suburban continues like this, there will be no place for the industry. The project try to retain as much of the industry as it can, and then create a new edge, that is organized by this large landscape system. The project try to form an ecological bracelet, to reorganize the natural systems, and create a central park for the entire neighborhood.

LANDSCAPE AS URBAN FORM, AMONGST A NEW REPERTOIRE OF ELEMENTS In the regional scale, the Woburn city is surrounded by a great number of natural systems, like the Middlesex Reservation, while our site doesn’t take advantage of such abundant resources. Although there is lots of open space, Decades of industrial use have polluted 47.5% of open space, and it’s such a waste.

01. Retain most of the industrial buildings, build new residential towers between the industrial and the landscape

URBAN PERIPHERY IN FLUX Looking into the site, it is defined by two edges. One between industrial and residential, and the other between residential and natural system. The circulation for vehicle intends to merge the marginal program into the inner nature, while the circulation of natural system connects inside content to regional context. By only relocating 6% of the industrial building inside the site, the open space ratio can be increase from 51% to 68%. To obtain the continuity of the natural system, we put the power line underground and bump up the hill, to create a platform for the playground. Our ecological park will welcome residents from the west neighborhood. By creating a green path and pedestrian bridge, to connect residents, who are currently divided by transportation infrastructure

The Montgomery County Courthouse Campus is located in Norristown, Pennsylvania and is the County seat.The massing of the building is a response to a variety of complex and sometimes conflicting demands. The Courthouse facility is a highly symbolic and visible part of the County’s civic infrastructure with a sombre and serious purpose. At the same time it is a public amenity, closely associated with the town and its community, expressed in part by the expanded and improved Hancock Square and carrying with it the potential for renewed economic and retail activity.

Exterior Details


FACADE STUDY Lighting discourages undesirable activity and provides a sense of security during evening hours. Added facade integrated lighting to increase building illumination and eliminate dark corners. Overhang provides ideal location for integrated lighting and CCTV systems, providing visual clarity.


INTERIOR - COURTROOM There are 26 courtrooms in total in the new campus. 6 civil courts and 2 orphans courts are located in the existing building. 7 criminal, 8 family, 2 problem solving and 1 special proceedings court are located in the new building.

In the future, there will be surely more population in the city and more density will happen in the westside. Under such circumstance, we are making a manifesto that the edge will not be expanding anymore so much of the density will be placed on this very edge, just like the riverfront development.

JI A HU SIT E MUSEUM Internship in Shaanxi Provincial Conservation Engineering Inst of Monuments & Sites Supervisor: Kecheng Liu Wuyang, Henan, China 3000m2 Team member: Run Wang, Jie Ning, Boju Wu

Jiahu culture has 7000-year history and nine legacies that break the world records. By introducing new programs to the museum such as activities centre, we intended to not only bring villagers and tourists together, but also make their activities as an extension of local traditions. When the museum is closed, each exhibition hall secures itself and the remaining area becomes a spot for villagers’ activities.

I’m enthusiastic about depiction of architecture on a drawing medium. Although I didn’t attend professional drawing class when I attend universities, I have been practicing throughout the five-year study. I made significant progress in this area and that progress award me a first-prize in a drawing competition. The drawing of Architecture sketches exist for thousands of years, and it continue to do so even nowadays technology has made the hand drawing not a necessity. You can depict a scenery in a more emotional way and by doing so, you can bear all these spatial experience in mind.
