About Sunriver Sunriver is nestled on 3,300 acres next to the Deschutes River in Central Oregon’s High Desert. It is a resort-residential community that features year-round activities from skiing at Mount Bachelor, ice skating and snow-shoeing, to golfing, rafting, horseback riding and hiking. Sunriver’s newest feature is the SHARC (Sunriver Homeowner’s Aquatic and Recreation Center) which features water slides, a lazy river, baby-friendly area, and indoor pool and fitness center. During the summer months, Sunriver is host to music and art festivals and the Pacific Crest Sports Festival in June. The Village at Sunriver has a variety of shops and fine to casual dining. Sunriver is located on the former Camp Abbot grounds, a World War II training facility. The camp opened in 1942 and closed by June 1944. In 1965, developers John Gray and Donald V. McCallum bought the land, chose the name “Sunriver” and began planning. The Officer’s Club from Camp Abbot was renovated and is now the Great Hall at Sunriver Resort. Gray and McCallum wanted a resort and residential community focused on maintaining the environment, limiting the number of homesites and minimal landscaping. Sunriver sits at approximately 4200 feet, to the east of the Cascade Range. We enjoy low humidity levels and a dry, high desert climate. Our region experiences warm and dry summers with average temperatures in the 70s and 80s – the days are warm and the evenings are cool. Since we are east of the Cascades, most of our precipitation arrives in the form of snow in the winter months – November through late March/early April. Sunriver averages 34 inches of snow per year as compared to nearby Mount Bachelor, which receives about 370 inches per year.
