SPRING INTO ACTION
6 Walking Games This Spring, make going on a family walk fun by introducing a game or two to the proceedings: Fox & Chickens Find a clear area between 1 two trees or large bushes. Nominate a ‘Fox’ and everyone else as ‘Chickens’. The Fox stands in the middle and tries to catch all the tasty little chicks running between the two trees. Once caught they have to help catch the others. The last Chicken to be caught gets to be the next Fox. Catch a Colour Think of a colour and shout 2 it out for your children to find an object in that hue. Start with easy-to-find colours such as green and yellow before you move on to the much rarer blues and reds. The person who ‘Catches the Colour’ first gets to choose the next one. Find a Mini-beast On your walk, turn over 3 stones, logs or piles of leaves as you go to see what’s hiding underneath. It is easy to find all sorts of bugs and beasties. Take a magnifying glass with you for a
really good look and snap a few close-up photos on your phone for later examination. Shadow Tag An ideal game to play in 4 the cooler months when shadows are long. Nominate someone to be ‘it’. When they step on another’s shadow, the owner of the tagged shadow become ‘it’ – repeat until exhausted. Scavenger Hunting Before you start, set down 5 a list of objects you think you might find on the way: an acorn, a smooth pebble, a red leaf, a fir cone, a wild flower, a feather... Add to the list, if objects are scavenged too quickly. Small treats could be awarded for the best objects found! Family Chains Two people hold hands and 6 start to chase the others. Those they catch have to join their chain. Play until everyone is caught and linked up.

Valentine Suncatchers
Indulge in a little craft with your children during the first weekend of February half-term and make these attractive suncatchers, celebrating love on Valentine’s Day. You will need: • Stiff red paper or card and tracing paper • Sticky back plastic/coloured yarn/heart-shaped doilies • Tissue paper shapes, sequins and other flat decorations • Water colour paints • PVA glue Make a frame by tracing the shape onto your card – just fold a sheet of tracing paper in half and draw two half hearts against the fold, one inside the other. Use a craft knife to cut out your frame. Fill the centre with one of these three ideas: 1 Place your frame on a piece of sticky back plastic and trim off the excess. Since the plastic is sticky it won’t take much pressure to apply their decorations – great for younger children. 2 Paint some doilies with watercolour paints, allow to dry and then glue the edges to the frame. Add some decorations to the whole. 3 Carefully pierce the frame with a darning needle and then thread coloured yarn across the frame and decorate.
