Spring means bluebells, the essence of English spring, so we have put together a short list of bluebell-carpeted-woods you can visit in Sussex and added some interesting facts too, see page 21. Spring also means warmer days and outdoor activities; on page 22 you will find some great back-to-nature campsites in Sussex where you can pitch your tent this spring and make great memories with your family.

We have 4 competitions for you to win some fabulous prizes for the whole family: a family camping weekend to INTO THE TREES, tickets to THE SOUTH OF ENGLAND SHOW, a family day out at DRUSILLAS PARK and copies of the fabulous book by Annabel Marriott (see p.5) SUPER BIRDS!

We are looking for a new editor to buy into and join our successful and friendly group. There is a purchase fee for the business and the franchise joining fee includes a full support package.

Family Grapevine editors work from home and a viable business would require a minimum of 30 hours per week. You need to be confident, efficient and able to work to deadlines. You must enjoy interacting with people and rise to the challenges and responsibilities of being your own boss.

The role involves sales, social media and graphic design but previous experience isn’t essential, we can help with that. What we’re really looking for is enthusiasm for our brand and the desire to provide a fantastic service for families in East Sussex.

New Breast Cancer Support Group in Eastbourne

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in the UK. Being diagnosed is usually a shock and although effective treatments are improving there is a lack of peer-topeer support especially in East Sussex. A new support group has been set up in Eastbourne by women who have received a diagnosis with the aim of offering a friendly supportive environment to share experiences.

The group called Breast Cancer Connect meets for a monthly coffee in Eastbourne town centre and also has a private Facebook page.

Motcombe Gardens, Eastbourne Old Town BN21 1PU. Originally forming part of a farmyard, the 9th Duke of Devonshire gave the garden to the town of Eastbourne in 1909. The duck pond is the source of the Bourne stream from which ‘East Bourne’ got its name. There is an historic round, flint-built dovecote with a conical tiled roof standing on an upper level. Main paths suitable for wheelchair access. Free entry.

South Downs National Park & South Downs Way, incl. Ditchling Beacon, which is the 2nd highest point in the South Downs National Park with spectacular views across the Weald. Ditchling Beacon was one of a chain of fires lit to warn of impending invasions. Once an Iron Age hill-fort, with its steep northern slope used as a natural defence.

Uckfield Millennium Green access via New Rd, Ridgewood or park at Ridgewood Village Hall. Hard surfaced path, dog free picnic area and lots of wildlife.

Undercliff Walk 5km+ from Brighton Marina to Saltdean, used by both cyclists and pedestrians. Occasionally very wet when the waves come over the seawall!

West Park Local Nature Reserve Uckfield. Relatively small reserve covering just over 8.5 acres of woodland, grassland, marshy areas and sandstone outcrops. Boardwalks provide easy access around the site.

Wilderness Wood Hadlow Down, near Uckfield TN22 4HJ. 62 acres of woodland, nature trails, lots of children’s activities, café & shop. Usually open Wed– Sun term time & daily during school holidays, full details on their website.

An outstanding, privately owned country house in Sussex which dates from the time of Henry VIII but was substantially remodelled in the 18th Century. The house, gardens and notable collection of works of art and porcelain are of national importance.

Hastings Museum and Art Gallery TN4 1ET, a rich mix of fine paintings and china, the cultures of other lands, well-known personalities and a contrasting view of local wildlife today and as it would have been 150 million years ago. There are plenty of special features for children, with fossils that transform into dinosaurs, prehistoric crocodiles and fish, a diorama of local animals and birds and Native American Galleries complete with tipi and buffalo. Pevensey Castle (cont.)...fortress the story of Britain’s south coast defences. Beginning in the 4th century as one of the last and strongest of the Roman ‘Saxon Shore’ forts, 2/3 of its towered walls still stand. It was the landing place of William the Conqueror’s army in 1066 and during the century following the Conquest, a full-scale Norman castle, with a great square keep and a powerful gatehouse, was built within one corner of the fort. In the 1250s the towered bailey wall was constructed, and soon put to the test during the great siege of 1264. Open daily from April.

Priory of St Pancras in Priory Park, Lewes BN7 1HP (satnav use BN7 2XA). During the 11th century, monks came here from Cluny in France to establish the first Cluniac priory in England. The Priory survived for 450 years until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1537, walk in the footsteps of medieval monks and imagine how the buildings once looked. A recreated herb garden grows plants that monks would have used for medicinal, culinary and ceremonial purposes, free.

Royal Pavilion, Brighton BN1 1EE Built for the Prince Regent, later King George IV, in stages between 1787 and 1823, remarkable for its exotic oriental appearance both inside and out and was revered by fashionable Regency society.

Peanut Butter Chicken Curry

My kids’ favourite dish, they’ll love the fact peanut butter is in this. Get them involved, especially when it comes to mixing the peanut butter and coconut milk into the dish and watching it change colour.

Serves 4

Prep time 10 mins, cooking time 20 mins

Ingredients

3-4 chicken breasts, thickly sliced 300g/10oz Basmati rice (brown is best)

1 red onion, diced

4 garlic cloves, peeled and grated

1 thumb of ginger, peeled and grated

1 teaspoon of cumin

1 teaspoon of ground coriander

½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper (older kids only)

1 x 400g/14oz can of chopped tomatoes

1 x 400g c/14oz can of coconut milk

2 tablespoons of peanut butter (preferably chunky)

Approx 180g/6.5 oz fresh spinach, rinsed or 6-8 frozen cubes

Vegetable oil

Salt

Method

1. Season the chicken then cook in a teaspoon of vegetable oil for 4-5 minutes until browned, turning frequently. Remove from the pan.

2. Cook the rice per packet instructions

3. Cook the onion in a teaspoon of vegetable oil and pinch of salt for 2-3 minutes then add the garlic, ginger and spices. Cook for a further minute.

4. Add the tomatoes, coconut milk and peanut butter to the pan and mix well.

5. Bring to the boil, add the chicken back in (along with the frozen spinach if using) then simmer for 10-12 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken.

6. If using, add the fresh spinach then cook for a further 2 minutes then serve alongside the basmati rice.

Sausage, Butter Bean & Kale Hotpot

Who doesn’t love a sausage? This dish is a super easy one pot that also features lots of lovely nutrients. Serve over rice or pasta for more carbs and swap the sausages for some chorizo if you prefer.

Serves 4

Prep time: 10 minutes, Cook time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil

8-12 good-quality sausages

1 onion, diced

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 teaspoon dried rosemary

1 teaspoon dried oregano

2 courgettes/zucchini, finely diced

2 carrots, finely diced

1 tablespoon plain/all-purpose white flour (or any alternative)

600ml/20fl oz/2 1/2 cups vegetable stock

2 large handfuls of kale, tough stalks removed, roughly chopped

2 x 400g/14oz can of butter/lima beans, drained

Cheese, for grating

Method

1. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the sausages and cook for around 5–6 minutes, turning once. Remove then pour out any excess fat from the pan.

2. Heat another tablespoon of oil in the pan. Add the onion and cook for 2–3 minutes. Add the thyme, rosemary and oregano and mix well. Add the courgettes/zucchini and carrots and cook for 3–4 minutes.

3. Whisk the flour into the stock, then pour into the pan. Add the sausages back in, cover the pan and simmer for 15 minutes.

4. Add the kale and butter/lima beans and cook for a further 3–4 minutes before serving with some grated cheese. Goes great with some crusty bread
