MEET

THE KIDS

An Interview with Méabh (3) & Róisín (2)

MÉABH AND RÓISÍN ARE SISTERS WHO HAVE BEEN ATTENDING MOSSLEY HILL PRE-SCHOOL. A HIDDEN GEM NESTLED IN THE CONSERVATION AREA OFF ROSE LANE, A PACK AWAY NURSERY SET OUT EVERY DAY, OFFERING A VERY PERSONAL LEVEL OF CHILDCARE. WE THOUGHT WE’D GIVE THE CHILDREN OF THE PRE-SCHOOL A CHANCE TO TELL YOU THEIR VIEWS ABOUT THE SCHOOL.

Well girls do you love your preschool? (Pre-school manager Saiqa informs me that you should wait 10 seconds when talking to young children to give them thinking time) M & R / YEEESSSSS (Didn’t need to wait 10secs for that reply) What are your favourite things to do at preschool? R / Cars & Numbers M / Painting our feet R / And our hands and toys! (You paint your toys, really?) M / Only leaf toys (staff explain they painted leaves and gave them googly eyes to make leaf puppets) What is your garden like? M / I like the seesaw R / Yes, the seesaw M / and the mud kitchen but it has grass now it’s not too muddy anymore! (The outdoor area has had a revamp over the summer to include artificial grass, so the children can play outside in all weathers all year) Have you ever been on a school trip? M & R / Yes, we went on the bus to the farm. I fed a cow (a cow really?) yes and a pig it wasn’t smelly cause it had a bath!

I had more questions for the children, but they were too eager to play so we have had to cut this interview short. The bright and airy pre-school is a busy, fun place where children are active learners and very well equipped to make the move on to ‘big’ school. Mossley Hill Pre-school is a small personal operation where home/school relationships are highly valued and the staff are on hand at any time to discuss your child’s needs. BORN AT THE RIGHT TIME chools minister Nick Gibb wrote an open letter to schools and local authorities in September 2015, announcing plans to change the rules to allow children born between 1 April and 31 August to start primary school a year later. At the time, the move was welcomed by parents of summerborn children, who have long argued that their offspring are at a disadvantage because of their relative immaturity within a class. But this week it emerged that while some authorities have been pressing ahead with change, the government is delaying because of fears that some parents might try to play the system.

S

PARENTS PLAY THE SYSTEM? SURELY NOT. Gibb, said there were concerns that some parents might use the change in policy to double their chances of getting a place at a popular primary school. The government has become worried that some parents of summer-borns might use the changes to make two applications to their preferred school, applying once when their child is four and again when they are five. So ministers have asked for more time to consider how to best implement the changes to avoid “unplanned consequences”.

WOULD IT HELP TO LET ALL CHILDREN START SCHOOL WHEN THEY ARE OLDER? You mean like in Finland, where children don’t go to formal school until they are seven? It’s true that the later children begin school, the smaller the relative age difference between them will be. But the fact remains that children are born throughout the year, and school starts at a fixed point. The IFS argues that it is the age at which a child sits a test that is the key driver of differences in educational attainment, rather than their birth date. Perhaps the government should be looking at age-adjusted test scores rather than greater flexibility in relation to school starting dates.

DOES IT REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHEN A CHILD STARTS SCHOOL? Yes it does. Children born in late summer - July and August – will find themselves learning in the classroom alongside children who can be 11 or even 12 months older. These older children will be more physically capable; they will be able to concentrate better and their language skills will be more developed – an advantage that is then reinforced by praise and improved self-esteem. Children born in the summer also tend to perform worse academically than those born in the autumn. The differences are at their most pronounced soon after children start school, but the gap remains up to GCSEs and beyond.

SO IF YOU ARE BORN IN JULY OR AUGUST, YOU ARE LIKELY TO DO WORSE IN YOUR GCSES? A report by the highly regarded Institute for Fiscal Studies concluded that children born in August are 6.4% less likely to achieve five GCSEs or equivalent at grades A* to C, and around 2% less likely to go to university at age 18 or 19 than children born in September.

DOES THE DISADVANTAGE PERSIST IN OTHER AREAS OF LIFE? The IFS argues that the effect fades over time and there is little evidence that it persists into adulthood. But in a feature titled How to build a champion: Be born at the right time, the BBC points to research into the possible impact of birth date on sporting success, particularly looking at football in England. The study found that professional football youth academies in England for 16- to 20-yearolds were dominated by “older” players born at the start of the academic year. Figures found that 57% of the footballers were born between September and December, compared to 14% who were summer-born. Similarly, 75% of footballers taking part in an under-17 European championship were born within that four-month window.

Restaurant Review

GINO’s Gino D’Acampos fourth, ‘My Restaurant’ has come to Liverpool and we were thrilled to have been invited to sample their tantalising Christmas menu. Standing impressively at Number 1 Castle Street, we knew we would be in for a treat! Inside the design has a true Italian feel, with the use of white marble, washed woods and sumptuous Riva green leather - supposedly reflecting Gino’s passion for his homeland of Naples in Southern Italy. Throughout the vast restaurant are hundreds of stunning black and white photographs of Gino with his family, friends and celebrities, very quirky and a lovely personal touch. Our welcome was warm and excited as we were shown to our seats, the lovely hostesses had arranged for Santa hats, crackers and other Christmas novelties at our table! Our first Christmas dinner of the year was but moments away, we were ecstatic! Once seated we had a look around our visually stunning surroundings. Directly in our view was the open kitchen and a second central prep counter, where fresh vegetables, fruit, bread and cheeses were on display. On our way to our table we passed an impressive prosecco bar which we were later informed houses 40 different kinds of prosecco, as well as hand-picked bottles of wine and ‘the nicest’ Sicilian Beer (which my partner has vouched for!) We also had a look at the À la carte menu where no compromises were taken on any recipes and Gino insists on the use of well sourced, seasonal, artisan ingredients by utilising his vast range of contacts across the diverse regions of Italy. Our waiter, Pablo was attentive and offered opinions on wine and food, which we loved. My husband and I were lucky enough to sample three glorious starters. A potato and butternut squash soup which was entirely delicious and tasted, ‘like Christmas’. A true winter warmer and a comforting start to our meal. Followed by calamari and king prawn dishes, both cooked to perfection and paired with a creamy chilli and garlic mayonnaise which made for scrumptious seafood starters.

For main course I decided on the Turkey Saltimbocca with parma ham (if ever there was a Christmas dish!) Which with roasted potatoes and vegetables to share, as do all main course items. We both commented on the marsala wine sauce which with it’s sweet, rich flavours even further enhanced Turkey. The potatoes were cooked in rosemary and thyme, the type of potatoes which are so soft they melt in your mouth. The vegetables consisted of beetroot, onions, carrots and garlic and were cooked in a similar way, super festive! My husband opted for the Aberdeen Angus Steak which came flame grilled with brandy, green peppercorns and hand cut chips, he was the epitome of a ‘kid at Christmas’ (pun intended!) We took a time out between our main and dessert courses and were approached by the lovely Gareth, manager at Gino’s. He offered to show us the private dining room downstairs which, used to be an old safe and still has the steel door entrance. The ‘Bullion’ room is extremely charming, host to pool tables, DJ

booth, private bar and seating for approximately 50 people. Ultra-sleek and available to hire for private parties or those Christmas gatherings fast approaching. Feeling totally relaxed and ready for round three we made our way back upstairs where our desserts were just arriving. Three for two seemed to be a running theme as we opted for the Chocolate Fondant the Panna Cotta and a cheeseboard! We didn’t think we would be able to finish, but once again Gino’s delivered class, taste and elegance with these three festive dishes, so who were we to refuse! All in all, an enchanting experience and one which I hope to delve into again. Bellissimo, Gino’s!

Bourn Bourn allory and Hattie Bourn are sisters, fashion/beauty bloggers AND yummy mummies originally from just outside London. Mallory has a beautiful daughter named Blythe and Hattie has a gorgeous son named Otis and is expecting her second son in the coming months. The sisters have a huge presence on social media with around 75, 000 loyal followers who love seeing their stunning photos and honest captions on motherhood, as well as many fashion and beauty recommendations.

&

M

We love reading their blog which covers an array of diverse topics from maternity style to wedding planning and even most recently, a very brave post on mental health. The sisters have such a unique bond and have grown their blog together, taking turns to talk about a different topic on this wonderful platform to help and inspire their readers, especially mums and mums to be! We have been lucky enough to speak with these lovely sisters and to ask some questions on their experiences of motherhood. Grab a well-earned cup of coffee and indulge yourself‌

Q / Hi Girls! Thanks so much for speaking with Family Go Live. Our community here in the North West are very excited about learning more about you both. Could you tell us a little bit about yourselves? H / We are sisters and best friends. I (Hattie) live in Bristol and Mallory in Leamington. We are both super family orientated and love all things fashion and beauty. Q / So, let’s get straight to it! Hattie, we know you are pregnant for the second time (congratulations!) how does it differ from the first time? Mallory, how did you find your pregnancy with your daughter? H / This pregnancy has been completely different to my first. I suffered badly with hyper graviderum in my first so I was terrified of being pregnant again. I’ve been so lucky and have been very well

this time which is so refreshing. M / I found pregnancy to be a surreal experience. I was so excited to be pregnant but I was also incredibly anxious and impatient. I suffered from heavy bleeding at the beginning of my pregnancy and they feared I had miscarried so I had lots of early scans. Q / There is still such a misunderstood stigma around post-natal depression even though around 2 in every 10 women are affected by it within their first year of giving birth. What advice would you give to mums struggling with their new role and what did you find most difficult about becoming a mum? H / I found new mum loneliness incredibly hard. I live far away from any family and friends so becoming a new mum in that kind of environment is testing. You feel a huge amount of pressure once you become a mum and

H / Zara is my favourite. It always has something I love so I never leave empty handed. Next is also great! M / Our favourite places to shop are Zara and ASOS for ourselves. We like to mix high street and designer items and usually spend more on handbags and shoes. We also love Zara kids, Next and Mini Boden for the children Q / So ladies, how do you find life as a blogger? Is it really as glamorous as it looks?!

I really struggled with that. My advice to anyone feeling the same is try and get out at least twice a week, even if it’s just for a coffee on your own, getting out with you and your baby will do you the world of good. Join a mummy group! M / During pregnancy and after having a baby your hormones are all over the place one minute you feel elated and the next your crying your eyes out. It’s a new experience unlike any other and you are suddenly responsible for another life. It’s overwhelming and scary and can feel very lonely. I think for both of us we found it hard that we don’t live close to family so we didn’t have lots of help at hand. We also found it really hard to meet other like-minded mums Q / Your children are both absolutely adorable! What would you say is the most rewarding part of being a mum? H / The most rewarding part for me is

familygolive.com

watching my son grow into the most gorgeous little boy. Him laughing and telling me he loves me makes the difficult days so worth it. I still look at him and can’t quite believe I made him, the love you feel when you’re a parent is just indescribable. M / It’s so rewarding seeing them learn and grow and to know that you’ve played a part in their journey. We love watching their personalities develop. when they reach out to hold your hand, tell you they love you or cuddle up to you for comfort those are the only rewards we need! Q / You are both renowned for your style, both your own distinctive chic-ness as well as your children’s style. Where are your favourite places to shop and any secret hidden treasures you could recommend!?

H / No, blogging is definitely not glamorous at all. Behind most shots we have an angry impatient Instagram husband and a screaming child. Taking pictures is a lot more stressful than people think and getting the kids to cooperate, well is pretty impossible. M / It’s definitely not very glam, we like to wear nice clothes and have always taken pride in our appearance but being a mum means that often takes second place. Taking photos has become much more difficult know Blythe and Otis are both running around it’s proving impossible to get a picture of them both looking at the camera! Q / When (or if!) you ever get some free time to yourself, what are your favourite things to do? H / Sit in a quiet room! Haha I’m joking (kind of!) We love to shop, spend time with family and see friends. Thank you, ladies, for answering our questions today, it has been wonderful getting a better insight on the Bourn sisters and as always, we appreciate how candid and open you both are! We cannot wait to keep up to date with all things Bourn. Website: www.bournsisters.com hattiebourn & mallorybourn

Winter Wonder

2. KRA KO W

1. NEW YORK, USA

1. NEW YORK, USA It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and by “it” we mean Christmas in New York! Just a few weeks after all the Halloween events wrap for the season, the best New York attractions turn into illuminated winter wonderlands. Picture this, you wake up in the city that never sleeps in none other than the iconic Plaza hotel on 5th Avenue. Wrap up in your favourite winter coat and oversized scarf, grab a large Starbucks (there’s one on every corner didn’t you know?) and a grilled cheese sandwich, then leisurely stroll past Bloomingdales, Macys, Tiffany & Co to see their infamous window displays. (We can window shop, right?!) Later that day make your way to a cosy watering hole for a Bloody Mary to warm up… maybe you’ll have dinner, maybe you won’t – who cares its New York! Not forgetting the markets of Manhattan, the Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting

Ceremony, ice-skating in Central Park - ok it’s official…we feel like Kevin McAllister in Home Alone and we don’t care who knows it! 2. KRAKOW, POLAND Hailed as the winter capital of Poland - If you’re looking for a city break with the right blend of culture, nightlife and quaint surroundings, Karakow is hard to beat. While you can see traces of the city’s WWII history, Poland’s former royal capital is also a celebration of the present. Step onto Europe’s largest medieval town square, explore regal Wawel Castle, and take it all in from a quiet café. Come evening, you’ll have your pick of cabaret bars, iconic theatres, bustling restaurants and nightclubs – you’re sure to warm up in no time! Not to mention it’s reasonably cheaper than the slightly more popular but similar, Prague! A truly cultural experience and one to invest in this winter.

3. PISTOIA, ITALY This is tipped as one of the best cities to visit in 2017, offering all the charm and architecture of Florence, packed into a smaller city with none of the queues. You’ll be in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, so pile your plate high with locally produced pasta, meat and copious amounts of red wine (hey it’s Christmas after all!). Ski bunnies will be happy to know the ski lifts open in Abetone in January and the day passes only cost €29, so it’s an easy weekend activity outside of Florence. This enchanting city also offers a huge music scene with everything from blues, jazz to rock and roll! At Christmas the entire city centre will be decorated and illuminated with warm colours and the perfumes of the holidays - chestnuts and more. The festive calendar for Pistoia has something happening every day from exhibitions to theatre shows, religious

concerts to Christmas music in the streets, and of course there will be several ideas and activities that will include the kids – win win! 4. BUDAPEST, HUNGARY A personal favourite, Budapest is known for its great baths, such as Gellért and Széchenyi. If you’re feeling adventurous, daring and maybe a little bit crazy this Christmas then braving the -10 temperatures outside for a few moments in swimwear just to enter the fabulous 27 degrees baths should be top of the hit list! Home to the Hungarian State Opera house, the most beautiful opera house in Europe, why not book tickets to the celebrated Nutcracker ballet after a cruise along the river Danube. Imagine an ice-rink in a beautiful park surrounded by a pretty castle. Sounds like a fairy tale, doesn’t it? Well, this fairy tale is reality in Budapest. In fact, ice skating on the City Ice Rink is a popular activity among locals during wintertime so make sure you don’t miss out. Now, drinking mulled wine in Budapest is a must, with plenty of captivating ruins bars to choose from. Szimpl Kert is the most famous of these bars and totally interchangeable depending on the time of day. Visit early hours and you’ll see all the tourists snapping photos of the quirky surroundings, come back later that night and expect to take part in a full-blown rave! ‘Szimply’ breathtaking gothic revival style architecture, steeped in culture with an abundance of activities, a city to add to your list this Christmas.

Q/A

Kevin Poole Personal Trainer: evin Poole, holds a multitude of titles from personal trainer, coach, physique athlete, to sports scientist and nutritionist. If you are looking to invest in someone to help you with health and fitness needs, Kevin is one of the best. We have been lucky enough to speak with him to get a better insight into what it is he does, and how he could help you - be prepared…this Q&A may make you feel motivated!

K

Q / Hi Kevin, ok so we briefly touched on your background in health & fitness, how and when did you first realise this was something you wanted to do? A / I always knew that I would be involved with sports, health and fitness ever since school as that was what I was good at and all I seemed to be interested in. After completing my masters in sports physiology and nutrition I worked with athletes to help them reach their full potential. It was at that point where I recognised I loved helping people as it gave me a great deal of satisfaction. I temporarily started working with public clients alongside my athletes and saw a level of gratitude that overwhelmed me and, so I decided to start working with the public full time and never looked back.

Q / Finally Kevin, why should someone start their fitness journey with you? A / My approach is about understanding my clients, making them a priority, being personally relatable to them and their barriers to formulate specific plans to achieve their goals. Creating behavioural changes to someone’s lifestyle is a key component to long term success. I genuinely care about my clients and their progress and I want people to come away from a session with me having learned something they can implement for the rest of their lives. fitbyscience_kevinpoole

Kevin Poole

Q / What would your advice be to someone who wants to make a change to their lifestyle but feels apprehensive about what that may entail? A / People don’t realise how bad they feel daily until they start feeling good! My advice would be take the leap and step out of your comfort zone, take advantage of feeling good about yourself. Taking the first step is the hardest part due to nerves that surround the unknown but the only way is up! Q / What are your thoughts on exercise and mental health? A / I can absolutely relate and understand what people go through in these circumstances. In cases such as depression and anxiety it’s common that coping mechanisms involve alcohol, drugs and emotional eating. These all give short term relief but ultimately just prolong the issue by masking the problem. Whilst fitness channels emotions in a positive way. More people should be aware that exercise massively helps mental health. Q / What advice would you give to people who want to enjoy the season but want to stay in shape? A / This is literally all about being mindful of what’s going on and making better choices. Life is all about balance, so just being aware of your caloric intake where alcohol and festive food is concerned you will be fine. There are strategies you can put in place for example have a glass of water between every alcoholic drink will ensure you drink less alcohol and limit dehydration.

INSPIRING Local Women In Business his issue we thought we’d bring a little inspiration to our readers by introducing four local women who have set up their own businesses as well as spinning a few other plates! We are immensely proud as a community and love to see local people doing well – read a little bit about these ladies below and don’t forget to follow on social media!

1. KIM MELLOR Have you ever thought to yourself, there must be more to life than this? Well that was me at 28 years old. At the time, I was a university graduate, I owned a lovely home and a had a great career as a model. Life on the surface looked great, but in reality, I had no security I hated being judged for my looks and I lacked direction. The modelling industry is unpredictable and I just didn’t know what the future would hold. I was desperate to make something of my life but didn’t quite know how. Then one day my friend called me wanting to share an ‘exciting opportunity’, of course jumped at the chance! And what I heard that day filled me with excitement as all the questions I had in my life like; how can I create more freedom? How can I make a difference in the world all got answered by what I heard. But I also was afraid, ‘what would people think of me doing something like this?’, ‘what if it doesn’t work out?’. Although sceptical at first, I decided to do my research and made the smart, intelligent decision to jump all in!! From that day, I began working my business part-time alongside my modelling career and I have never looked back! So, what do I do? I have a Network Marketing business in the Health and

Wellness profession and my mission is to ‘Create a healthier happier world. Transforming lives through a pure healthy lifestyle, creating freedom through the joy of helping others’. In my opinion, Network Marketing is a genius profession. It allows ordinary people to start a business with minimal start-up costs and huge amounts of potential to create a life filled with choice.

1. KIM MELLOR

Network Marketing is simply word of mouth. Have you ever recommended something to someone before? A book? A film? A restaurant? We don’t normally get paid for our recommendations but with Network Marketing you do. There is now more opportunity than ever before to connect with people all over the globe and spread the word via social media. All I have done to grow my organisation is use and share a product I believe in and coached others on how to create their own online stream of income. I was limited to the impact I could make as a model, Today I am able to influence thousands of lives and teach people how to build the life of their dreams. I am living proof that anyone can do this business and fulfil their true potential. f you’re the kind of person who’s open minded to taking a look I would love to hear from you. Healthy is the new happy, Kim www.kimmellor.co.uk 2. FIONA DUTTON – FIFIT My name is Fiona Dutton, Financial Director of our family business, SPD Cad Services Ltd, Founder and Personal Trainer of FiFit and mum of two gorgeous boys, Sebastian, 6 and Max, 3. I first got into the fitness industry about 5 years ago when I was working full time as a Chartered Accountant for the NHS and also doing the Accounts for our

became very demanding. I was now in control of everything and it was brilliant to be able to manage all my work from home as we built a gym studio in the garden where clients would come to train. I also created a fitness app with workouts and recipes (FiFits 14 Day Fat Burn Challenge) last year to help people who are struggling for time. My husband and I are a great team as we both work together and can be really flexible with the children. I am lucky enough to make every school pick up and we have both really strived to build up our businesses, so it fits around our family. It’s hard work managing my own businesses and taking all the risks but the rewards are totally worth it! www.facebook.com/fifit.dutton

family business. I really wanted to study again in something I had a great passion for, so I qualified as a Level 3 Personal Trainer with pre and post-natal exercise and as a Spin Instructor.

3. SARAH HARRISON & SU STRINGFELLOW Sarah and Su founded HSA in 2010 following 10 years working for practices in Liverpool city centre. They wanted to establish an architecture and design practice which would enable them to work on the projects they enjoyed whilst still being able to maintain the balance of family life. They job share their director role and have had 4 lots of maternity leave between them during the lifetime of the firm.

I set up FiFit and built up a small client base working mainly early mornings and evenings. When Seb was born I decided to leave my NHS job as our family business was growing quickly and

Work began from Sarah’s front room, with several moves as staff numbers and projects grew. We bought our first premises earlier this year on Penny Lane where we currently employ 3 other staff.

Our approach to work has recently resulted in our selection as an RIBA Chartered Practice Role Model, one of only 9 architectural firms in the country, and the only one in the North West. We are extremely proud to be where we are today and we thank you for your continued support! www.harrisonstringfellow.co.uk 4. NICKI WRIGHT I had worked in the legal industry for 15 years then just two years ago my life took an unexpected turn and I was suddenly a single mum. My body’s reaction to the stress was to give me adult acne. I went to see numerous clinics and asked for advice and each time I felt instead of telling me what I needed, they asked me what I wanted. I spent a small fortune and was no better off. My current work was offering early redundancy for some long-term members of staff and I put myself forward, seeing it as an opportunity to gain back some control. I was one of the few who received the redundancy package and I chose to take the money and retrain as a skin specialist and go it alone! I studied the equivalent of an A level in anatomy, physiology and pathology then spent a further 8 months training in advanced skin. I paid myself a small wage whilst training then invested all my capital into equipment and my hand picked products and finally started up on my own 12 months ago. It’s been hard work but the absolute best thing I’ve ever done. I truly believe everything happens for a reason and I am a testament to that. www.niksskin.com.

Velocity offer a variety of packages to suit all budgets and needs. The team take care of everything while you and your party guests bounce away on their state of the art equipment. All velocity party packages come with 1 hour jump time, exclusive party room with pizza and juice and a dedicated party host. But what does a Velocity party involve? HERE’S WHAT THE MUMS HAD TO SAY: “We had our daughter’s birthday party at Velocity, 16 children in total and they all had such a brilliant time. We were greeted by our party host who welcomed the children and lead them through the safety briefing. The children were fully supervised on the trampolines by multiple members of enthusiastic staff. The staff engaged quite a lot with our party of 16 which went a long way to making this overall a great success. Our host then lead the party to the private party room for pizza and ice cream – throughout our time here nothing was too much trouble and everyone had an amazing time. We’ll come back - this is the one thing that my kids can do together!” “Very impressed. My son had his party here today, he has autism as did all the children attending from his class. I can’t

fault the staff who went out of their way to make the environment comfortable for all the children and their parents, going above and beyond my expectations throughout the party. They played with all the children and sat with them chatting when it got a bit overwhelming. Nothing was too much trouble. Our family and most of his class will be back for your autism night. 5* staff, environment and service. Fantastic from start to finish.” HERE’S WHAT THE KIDS HAD TO SAY: “I had the best Birthday at Velocity the Ninja Warrior Course was awesome!’ “Velocity is the best, it’s massive - I love the Total Wipeout and the foam pits!”
