Nicholas & Steele Vintage shop

Nightingale Music Services Nicholas & Steele Art shop

Nicholas & Steele By contrast, this is a brand new addition to the area. Having scoured the country for premises, Holly Nicholas-Steele and her husband Steve, decided that actually the best place to set up both their wonderful vintage shop and the School of Art, was right where they had lived for the last 5 years, in the heart of Raynes Park, West Wimbledon. Their shop is packed with beautiful vintage tea sets, handmade cake stands and jelly moulds like your grandmother used to have. Things, that as Holly said, are heirloom gifts to pass down to your children. Toys that were made to reflect a ‘make and do’ era. There are gorgeous baby blankets, hand knitted by local pensioners and an assortment of delightful charm bracelets, put together by Holly and these are just some of my favourite things! Also very exciting is Holly’s background: she trained as an Art teacher in South Africa, moved on to become the Head of Art at the Hall school in Wimbledon, then once she had set up and established her shop in Wimbledon Village, she decided to expand the arty part of the business. She and Steve have set up a studio in the premises at the back of the shop. “I provide young creative souls with a platform to express themselves and their creativity in a relaxed environment”, says Holly. There are after school clubs for children aged 6-12 years, and all sorts of Children’s holiday activities including a Christmas holiday fun craft club. Saturday craft clubs and parties are also planned. There are Adult classes too, so get along and develop your creative side.

As I write this, a new and I know excellent music service, is being put together. With a combined experience of over 20 years in music performance, flautist Marlene Verwey and pianist Anne Marshall can provide world class musicians for every requirement: charity concerts, private and corporate events as well as outstanding private tuition (piano, flute and voice lessons, theory tuition) offered by themselves, both in West Wimbledon and Putney. “I’ve been learning the piano with Marlene, she’s so encouraging and really helps me”, says Maddie, 12. An exciting and novel idea. “They will be brilliant”, says Louise, mother of 2 girls, her youngest having being taught by Marlene for some years now.

Maher and Sons bakery This has been a family run business for over 37 years, offering both a friendly service within the shop or via delivery. There is a vast range of baked breads, cakes, pastries and scones as well as sandwiches, homemade quiches and a favourite with some of the regulars, delicious filled (but healthy), jacket potatoes. Elly Keevil, mother of 3, said, “This is a brilliant place to come with young children, the food is tasty and homemade”. Sarah Vardy, a new mother, said, “It is very baby friendly”. The staff are accommodating and there is a children’s area inside where they are made to feel welcome; tiny little bite-size cakes are a favourite with small children and such a good idea.
