Contemporary art unveiled in Stanmore with the help of pupils from nearby Whitchurch Junior School A sculpture by artist Andy Hazell was unveiled in April at St Edward’s lakeside development, Stanmore Place. Perched in front of a stunning feature lake, The Seed, standing at 8 metres in height and constructed of polished stainless steel is a metaphor for putting down roots and settling. The Seed’s form, similar to that of an aircraft wing reinforces the local areas link with Bentley Priory and the Battle of Britain. The unveiling marks a major milestone in the development of Stanmore’s newest community, home to approximately 600 residents. The Stanmore area is undergoing major regeneration, with the marshes being shortlisted for an investment of £175,000 by the Mayor of London. The artist commented: “Stanmore Place provided plenty of inspiration. During its design I imagined passers-by and residents catching a glimpse of it as they drive past.

Parents reminded to protect kids’ eyes from sun damage Steve Schallhorn, Chief Medical Director at Optical Express, is urging parents to be aware of how harmful sunlight can be to youngsters’ eye health. He said: “The World Health Organisation estimates that up to 80% of an individual’s lifetime exposure to UV light will occur before the age of 18. Because children’s lenses are clearer than adults they allow light to pass through much more easily. “The best advice when it comes to small babies under the age of six months is simply to keep them out of direct sunlight altogether. Using hats to shade your child’s eyes is fine but they should also always wear good quality, well-fitting sunglasses. For them to have any kind of eye health benefit, sunglasses should have the with the CE mark.” Optical Express stocks a wide range of sunglasses for babies and children.

Inspiring children to read and set a Guinness World Records title this summer

L

ibraries across the UK are getting ready to encourage young readers to explore some of the astonishing reallife achievements and world records as featured in the Guinness World Records Books as part of the Summer Reading Challenge 2015. Organsied by The Reading Agency charity and the public library network, the annual Summer Reading Challeng, aimed and 4- 11 year olds and their families is simple and fun. Children are encouraged to read six or more library books of their choice during the summer holidays with collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate, or medal for every child who completes the Challenge. Children can sign up at their local library at the start of the summer holidays– it’s absolutely free - and preschoolers can take part in the mini-Challenge. Every year there is a new theme and this year the Summer Reading Challenge has teamed up with Guinness World Records - the global authority in record-breaking achievements and publisher of the annual Guinness World Records™ book – to establish a “Record Breakers” themed Challenge. Record Breakers brings together fact and fiction, challenging young readers to explore astonishing real-life achievements and world records. Collecting stickers as they go, young readers will discover the weird, wonderful and wacky records from around the world in six different categories: Cool Tech, Way to Go!, The Big Stuff, Animal Magic, People Power and Action! Adventure! As part of this year’s Challenge, children, parents, carers, young volunteers, teachers, much-loved children’s authors and important figures in communities around the UK will be asked to make a pledge to help us set a new Guinness World Records™ title for the Most Pledges Received for a Reading Campaign! Public libraries are collecting pledges across the UK between Friday 10 and Monday 13 July – check with your local library to find out

when you can submit your pledge. The official launch date of the Summer Reading Challenge in England is Saturday 11 July (although local variation applies). Parents and carers love the challenge, not only is it free but they can see the difference the Summer Reading Challenge makes to their children’s reading. Last year, over 800,000 children took part, nearly half of them boys! On days you can’t get to the library, there is still the Record Breakers website, with so much for children to discover and they can keep a record of their Challenge too. Children can also recommend books and decide what to read next using the Book Sorter.

 HELPFUL HINTS Here are some ideas to help your child finish the Challenge. • Visit the library as often as you can. There are all kinds of events going on, and children soon get caught up in the fun • Read yourself! Don’t feel guilty about sitting down with a book, newspaper or magazine. It sets a good example to kids – and they will copy you! • Let children choose their own books. If they don’t like a book, just move on to the next one, or ask one of the library staff to recommend a read • Children don’t just have to read stories or novels. Fact books, audio books, poetry – they all count!

How should I help my child now before their 11+ exams this September?

S

ome of it is common sense, but not everyone has the same understanding of what’s required... and everyone has different circumstances and individuals involved.

As the majority of the state selective exams sit in September, this puts an enormous burden on families, as Year 5 children have to plan their preparation schedule to cover the summer holidays. Family holidays need be considered carefully and planned to support the child who will be sitting exams.

If your child is planning to sit 11+ exams this autumn, we have some words of advice for you from two experts in 11+ preparations!

8

NORTHWEST (LONDON) JULY/AUGUST 2015

Parents often ask us if it’s alright to go away over the summer. It really depends on the individual child, the schools they’re sitting for and how well prepared they are by the time they reach the summer holidays. We prefer slow steady preparation throughout Year 5, so that by the summer before exams, the curriculum is almost fully covered and the preparation is targeted at exam strategies, timing and last minute revision of weak areas to be covered over the summer holidays. Test papers and revision books will need to be taken on holiday. An hour a day can be set aside for practising exam papers, strategy and revision. Parents often do not realise

Education how resilient children are - if you are positive and normalise the preparation, they will do the same. If a child’s on target, then it’s a case of regular daily practice. If they have only just started, then they are going to need a lot of tutoring and practice – it is doubtful this could be achieved on holiday. It is unusual for a child to go away for several weeks, do no work and then come back and do well – they need a consistent approach over the holiday period so they stay on target. Some children take a week off in the middle of the holidays to get a complete break – that seems to work well for many. Coming back from holiday should be planned with at least a week clear to adjust before going back to school in order to acclimatise into work mode and to mentally prepare for the forthcoming intense few weeks of exams. The gentler and longer the period children have to prepare and practice for exams, the smoother and more successful the outcome will be for the majority of them. We are not in favour of last minute cramming; if it has to happen due to a last minute decision to apply, then definitely have a professional assessment before deciding – just to make sure it really is worth it. Taking the autumn 11+ state selective exams doesn’t have to mean condemning yourself to a miserable summer holidays – with careful planning and a steady considered approach, your child can enjoy their summer holiday and still be fully charged and ready to sit their exams successfully in September. Jaderberg Krais offer educational advice, assessments and tutoring for all children, including the 11+. If you would like more information contact Lorrae Jaderberg and Katie Krais on: 020 3488 0754 at www.jaderbergkrais.co.uk

Top 10 tips to make 11+ mock tests count! Due to the competitive nature of the 11+ exams, it is imperative that you child is well prepared. 1. Book a variety of mock tests with reputable providers for maximum exposure. 2. Ensure your child knows they are booked to sit the mock test. 3. Arrive at the venue on time, so that your child is relaxed. 4. Stress the importance of timing and accuracy to your child. 5. Remind your child not to be distracted by anyone else in room. 6. Check your child’s ranked results in relation to the cohort. 7. If feedback is provided, strengthen all weak areas. 8. If given access to the questions, go over challenging ones. 9. Do not focus only on the feedback provided by the mock test. 10. Remember, a mock test is not final. Be positive regardless! For more information, visit www.MockTestMasters.com

Why Summer School? By Suzanne Edwards, Director with Little Big Leaders www.littlebigleaders.co.uk

Summer is a great time for learning. It is a time when the weather is great and children are in a more relaxed and ready for learning which they absorb quicker and can really benefit a child in many different ways: 1. Enhanced Learning – Students are taught the fundamental skills for their age ability and are often stretched to the next level of learning and move to the next learning level. 2. Location – Many summer schools take place in your local area and in great learning environments that are new and stimulating for the children. 3. Age & Ability –students are often assessed prior to attending a summer school and are then grouped in accordance of their age or level ability. learning gaps are quickly picked upon and addressed. Once the child grasps those concepts then they have the potential to progress to the next level of learning.

4. Friendly Professional Staff – A good summer schools will have fully trained staff who are friendly and professional, and are prepared to go the extra mile to help students to better enhance their learning skills. 5. Better Assessment Results – Most summer schools will equip students to be ready for specific assessments ( 11+) or assessments in general while at the same time enhanced learning ability. Prior to booking your child onto a summer school, you should establish what the assessment criteria will be, what takes place on an Open Day, and if there are opportunities for your child to attend a trial lesson. To find out more about the Little Big Leaders summer school contact them on 020 8213 3100 or info@littlebigleaders.com or www.littlebigleaders.com. Summer School Presentations are at 9.15am or 11.30am at the London Academy on Saturdays during term time.

But London is more than its set pieces. Wandering and looking can reveal all sorts of delights and treasures, and this is one of my favourite ways to spend a day in town. Having shared this pleasure with my own children, I wanted to pass it on to others, and my sisterin-law Margie, my son Sam and I have written and published a small series of guidebooks called Step Outside Guides to do precisely that. They follow a simple, enjoyable format; each day is complete, and begins and ends at a Tube station: everything is completely family friendly: and nothing costs anything! We have researched carefully, with the idea being that we have done all the work so you don’t have to. To find out more, check us out stepoutsideguides.com.

So whether you spend your summer at home or away, indoors or out, enjoying local activities or venturing in to London, we hope you and your families have a great time!

Mummy on the Edge Two go mad in Mersea…

U

pon returning from a long, childfree holiday three days into Midi-Me’s half term break, I owed her some uninterrupted mummy time. What could be better than a mother-daughter pampering trip? A few phone calls later and I found The Crowne Plaza Colchester Five Lakes in Essex that would offer some mini (or should I say Midi)-treatments to my thirteen year old. Plus it was near Mersea Island, a secret place (I almost don’t want to tell you about it) of seafood fantasies that I had read about years ago but never visited, where oysters are fresh, cheap and readily available. MMMM… ME LOVE OYSTERS! And so does Midi-Me. This was for her, after all. After dropping our bags off to the hotel, we didn’t want to waste the sunshine so drove straight to Mersea to find a beach, experiencing the frisson of risk that the tide might cover the bridge and leave us stranded on the island for hours (this happens about two days in every month we were told). I had poor mobile signal so I simply followed the road until we couldn’t drive any further. It’s an island after all. Wherever we ended up did not look very pretty. It had suddenly turned cloudy and cold. Midi-Me gave me a geography lesson, pointing at different bits of coloured rock, earth etc and I nodded and enjoyed pretending that I understood what she was talking about. The next morning, we ate a big breakfast, and grabbing a hotel map, went on a three-mile walk that led us to an exquisitely dilapidated graveyard and caused a dog (and ourselves) some alarm when we inadvertently trespassed onto its owner’s property. We found the path back to the hotel down the side of the golf course, executing rubbish cartwheels and greeting kind, lady-golfers along the way. Back in the room, I realised I had left my swimsuit and underwear in a neat pile on my bed - at home in Bushey. MidiMe had however brought extra everything; thank goodness, I didn’t want to go shopping. I was walking a bit peculiarly and sensed people were looking at me funny as I entered the pool but I wasn’t wearing my glasses so it didn’t matter. I was freezing as the external door was left open for the guy who had come to fix the Jacuzzi which had had conked out before we’d gone anywhere near it. Good-natured Midi-Me humoured my complaints and even yielded to my insistence that she come with me into the steamroom (-for all of thirty seconds). Soon it was linner time. Linner is our world for late lunch that serves as dinner – it’s essentially a warning in our home that I do not plan to re-enter the kitchen for any purpose other than to replenish my wine, but it works equally well to ease pressure on my wallet whilst on holiday.) your-own-bread basis. We ordered 4 gigantic oysters followed by the entire hot side of the menu including scallops, prawns, grilled mussels and grilled oysters. It was, in a word, yummmmmm. We followed this with dessert at the charming Art Café and found out there was an Open Studio event starting the next day featuring local artists. In the morning we visited Leafy Dumas an artist of delightful work who happens also to be a single mummy to a teenage daughter, just like me. I admired her bohemian style and fantasised about turning the shed into My Special Place of Writing, Art and Mid-Life Crisis (…just like I did when I took MidiMe to the Roald Dahl museum and Jane Austen country in Bath. At time of writing, my shed is still full of things that belong, along with my artistic aspirations, in the dump.) We visited more artists, ate crab chowder at The West Mersea Oyster Bar and then it was back to the hotel for Midi-Me’s first ever facial! Of course it was a superb Clarins Facial with a very kind therapist. A special moment for me to experience with her and great for her to get a lecture about skin care from someone who isn’t her mother. This was followed by a romantic joint pedicure which Midi-Me promptly smudged while checking if it had dried. “It doesn’t matter,” I consoled, “life’s about the pedicure, not the topcoat.”

Desert Dreams In Dubai A destination with options for every family and budget a signature hotel of the city. The Atlantis the Palm, holding the title of being the biggest 5* deluxe hotel, with over 1800 rooms an onsite water park that is world famous, and in hotel aquarium known as the ‘lost chambers’. hen dreaming of the ultimate family holiday, for most there are a few definitive ‘musts’ that are just beyond compromise. An incredibly sunny location, beautiful clean beaches, plenty to do for the kids, a reasonable duration of flight, opulent and luxurious accommodation and hospitality and of course last, but by no means least, ‘value for money’! With all that in mind the number one destination that supersedes all can only be dazzling Dubai. Dubai is very much that thriving and majestic jewel of the Middle East. Forever growing in way of development and modernisation and serving tourists to maximum satisfaction year after year. Only this year, Dubai International Airport has over taken London Heathrow as the world’s busiest airport as it schedules hundreds of aircrafts and thousands of passengers every day.

The best part of visiting Dubai is that it doesn’t have to be a full scale overly indulgent travel experience. The city caters exceptionally for the budget traveller too. With outstanding high quality Apart Hotels and a Metro system that works very similarly to our London Underground, it makes staying in the city and getting about very affordable. Dubai holiday packages are great value for money and very few people return after a holiday not wanting to go again. However to make the most of your trip, advance bookings really make a difference - especially with the growing popularity of the destination, so when booking bear this in mind especially if you have a specific budget in place. At Travelpal, Dubai is our bestselling destination and there’s no shortage of explanations as to why. When visiting this dynamic Arabian city, you’re guaranteed hot temperatures and sun all year round. Peak season to visit Dubai is between September and April where you get the optimum in heat and comfort, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 35 degrees. Between May and August it’s the hot 40’s to 50’s to contend with but still for many travellers, it is weather that they very quickly acclimatise to and enjoy. With over 20 flights a day from the London Airports directly to Dubai, you can see how popular a destination this city has become. Flight times range from 6-8 hours, with many of them night flights which make them very family friendly. When visiting Dubai many wonder what there is to do. Don’t be under any misconception, this city boasts beautiful sandy beaches with water sports, spectacular water parks and kids clubs not to mention customer care and hospitality that, once tasted, it’s difficult to get used to anything less. By night this city far but sleeps. It is host to some of the world’s biggest, air-conditioned, shopping malls that are open until the late and include state of the art skiing slopes and children’s play world’s such as ‘Ski Dubai’ and ‘Kidzania’! That’s right you read correctly snow in the desert! Or if you are looking for a family adventure, there’s much to enjoy in way of ‘desert safaris’, which is driving through the golden sand dunes at high speeds and enjoying the authentic desert bar b Q’s with a chance to indulge in traditional belly dancing and much more. Dubai is also home to some of the world’s greatest buildings with its ongoing development and thirst to be one of the world’s most evolving cities. The famous Burj Khalifa stands proudly, glistening as the pride of the UAE and the world’s tallest building. The JW Marriott Marquis does the same as the world’s tallest hotel. And there are many more titles the city holds. But by far one thing it’s renowned for is the number of leading world’s hotels that it harbours, from the Burj Al Arab that is a 6* star hotel in the sea, built in the shape of a sail, the Jumeirah Beach Hotel again in the shape of a wave which was one of Dubai’s first 5* beach hotel that today is still very much
