Highgate Library under threat of closure! The first branch library to be built in the borough of Haringey is in danger of closing. A private charity, Jackson’s Lane, has proposed providing a library service at its arts centre, using the money raised from the sale.

The council said they welcome the idea and Jacksons Lane says it will enable more people to enjoy the library. It is not clear what would happen to Highgate Library and the surrounding land. Talks are underway between the Highgate Library Action Group (HLAG), Haringey Council and Jacksons Lane. Tamara Cincik, who is a member of the Friends of Highgate Library said: “Over 60,000 people use the library over the year. It’s in good condition, fully refurbished in 2002. If Haringey won’t make any money on the sale, then why sell it? It will degrade it to a library service and a private charity arts centre, with no community reach or recourse!” Friends of Highgate Library committee members are running a petition. Poems for Starting School

You’ve applied for the school, bought the uniform, and no doubt cried a few tears already. And now as September fast approaches, the countdown to waving goodbye at the school gates for the first time is getting closer and closer.

Dear Teacher, “I know you’re rather busy, first day back, there’s just no time, a whole new class of little ones and this one here is mine. I’m sure you have things covered and have done this lots before, but my boy is very little, he hasn’t long turned four. In his uniform this morning, he looked so tall and steady, but now beside your great big school I’m not quite sure he’s ready. So you help them eat their lunch? Are you quick to soothe their fears? And if he falls and hurts his knee will someone dry his tears? And what if no-one plays with him? What if someone’s mean? What if two kids have a fight and he’s caught in between? You’re right, I have to leave now it’s time for him to go I’m sure he’ll learn so much from you, things that I don’t know. Yes, I’m sure they settle quickly, that he’s fine now without me, I know he has to go to school, it’s just so fast. You see, it seems like just a blink ago I first held him in my arms, it’s been my job to love, to teach, to keep him safe from harm. So, when I wave goodbye in a moment and he turns to walk inside, forgive me if I crumple into tears of loss and pride. I know as I give him one more kiss and watch him walk away, that he’ll never again be wholly mine as he was before today“ This touching poem, by Emma Robinson can be found in her book ‘Motherhood for Slackers’. ADVERTORIAL

Education

Seize the summer with Explore Learning! At Explore Learning we are encouraging families to seize the summer! To help you do this we have put together a summer programme with creative ideas on how to keep your child’s brain active over the holidays, so they are ready to settle back into the new school year!

Start a blog

Learn some new skills by creating a blog together. Give your child a little note book to jots ideas down whilst you are out and about, then write up what you’ve done. Take lots of pictures as these are great for helping children who find writing tricky. Encourage them to describe the picture to get their creativity flowing.

Have a movie night

Watching TV/films is the number one thing children wanted to do over the summer. Use this to motivate your child to read. Find a book that has been made into a film that your child wants to watch. Then plan a movie night in advance so you can read the book together before enjoying the film.

Send a postcard

Let your friends and family know what you’ve been up to with a postcard. They’re only short so are a wonderful way to get some writing going during the holidays. If your child is reluctant to write, then why not try a postcard app like By Post? They can take their own pictures to make into postcards and type their message.

Read, read and read some more

A study by OUP showed that just 10 mins of shared reading a day can have a huge impact on children’s progress. Pop a book in your bag so you can use any opportunity to get your daily 10 mins in. We will be uploading weekly activities that you can complete with your child to help keep them engaged with what they are reading. Visit explorelearning.co.uk/summer to find out more and download your first activity!

Play some games

There are bound to be some rainy days this summer, so use this as a chance to get out some board games. These are great for so many reasons, from developing language to improving memory skills. Needs some new games? Have a scavenger hunt in local charity shops to see who in the family can find the best game.

Tuition

To keep your children progressing over the summer, a tuition centre is a great option. Prevent the battleground of getting children to do work at home and get them along to a centre where there are lots of other children getting involved. Explore Learning runs maths and English sessions as well as a whole range of interactive workshops throughout the holidays to keep your child’s brain active. The best thing is you can go along and try one of these for free, so get in touch today! www.explorelearning.co.uk

Play Streets

By Helena Foss

Back in the seventies, or the ‘olden days’ as my ten-year-old likes to call it, I was one of those kids who played out on the street until it got dark and in all kinds of weather. For the Queen’s 1977 Silver Jubilee, the adults blocked off the road by parking a car at each end, set up trestle tables and bunting, and held a street party that continued long after my bedtime. The exponential rise of car ownership, however, meant that by the eighties, playing out was becoming the exception rather than the norm. I remember my brother, eight years younger than me, growing up in front of the telly rather than outside. Throughout the last century, national car ownership has grown from just 8,000 to 21 million and is forecast to increase another 46% by 2031. Some 80 per cent of public space in London is made up of streets. Community organisation London Play believes we should reclaim these spaces for our children to play out safely. Their lottery-funded street play project began in 2008 when they organised over 100 street party events across the capital over several years. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton helped fuel the trend and the play street movement has been building ever since. Put simply, play streets give children the chance to play freely by blocking the street off to cars for several hours on a regular basis: weekly, fortnightly, monthly, after school or at weekends. Children enjoy the freedom to chalk the tarmac, kick a ball, cycle or scooter without having to worry about traffic. Not only is it good for children, it builds community too. Adults work together to organise the road closures. Neighbours lean on their front walls, drink tea and chat. Shy people venture out of their homes. “People are often surprised at how many children actually live in their street,” says London Play deputy director, Fiona Sutherland. “On the odd occasion when residents have been resistant, they come round when they realise it’s a relaxed way to meet their neighbours.” “In one street, people discovered a reclusive old lady who no-one knew about before,” Fiona adds. “When she later had a fall, neighbours rallied to help and bring her meals. They told me that wouldn’t have happened without the play street initiative.” London Play is keen to establish school play streets too – on the actual road the school is on. “Our goal is for every school to set up their own after-school play street,” says Fiona, “creating a traffic exclusion zone, enhancing air quality and creating fun, outdoor play time that so many city children miss.” Need help? Contact London Play. They can offer advice, supply materials, help approach your council and maybe even help with funding. See: www.londonplay.org.uk

How To Start A Play Street • Chat to a few neighbours. What do they think of the idea? • Flyer the whole street and invite everyone to a meeting. (On the street is ideal but you could also use a local school or community centre.) • At the meeting, agree on a date and timings for your trial. • Contact the council and ask how to go about applying for your street to be closed for the trial. In some boroughs you can do this online. It can take between four to eight weeks. • Once the council gives the go-ahead, meet again with your neighbours to make a plan. Decide what needs to be done in advance, confirm who will be around on the day and how they’ll be involved. • Put posters up on the street to promote your play street session. • Keep talking to your neighbours and get the children you know excited and involved. Then wait expectantly for the day to arrive. • Be prepared to meet new neighbours and, maybe, even join in the fun yourself. 6

How does your child benefit from Art? By Leona Matuszak – Lead Art Workshop Facilitator at Artists Resource, Art and Craft Workshops for Children and Adults. It’s so interesting teaching Art to children in different contexts, because you get to see how each one contributes to their development in different ways. In the Art workshop’s I host for Events and Birthday Parties, there are lots of intricate skills that the children are processing and learning. In my School Workshops and Private Tuition sessions these skills get developed much more, with time being spent on exploring and practicing the details.
Art benefits your child hugely both in a group setting and individually, with their physical, mental and emotional development. Art helps your child physically with: • Dexterity, fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination • Observation skills
Art helps your child mentally by: • Being inspired by and learning about contemporary Art culture, Art history
and complimentary subjects such as Science and Design/ Technology • Translating their abstract ideas into reality • Learning about how different materials work and how to apply that knowledge • Seeing and understanding both the bigger picture of a project and the fine details within a project
and learning how to get a balance between the two • Developing problem solving abilities • Improving concentration
 • Learning how mistakes are a beneficial part of the process
 • Developing patience and perseverance Art helps your child emotionally by: • Overcoming limiting beliefs about themselves and what they can achieve
 • Developing trust and intuition • Building Confidence • Improving both verbal and non verbal communication • Expressing emotions in a healthy way It’s important that we not only keep Art in the curriculum so that each child has a rounded and broad education, but that we encourage more Creative lessons within schools. Art may be one of the main subjects that helps children feel relaxed and fulfilled within the classroom. www.artistsresource.co.uk

Family Camping And Festival Fun!

Getting closer to nature and spending time as a family are great reasons to take a family camping trip or a weekend festival. Now, a recent study has found that a weekend under canvas can help re-set your body clock and improve sleeping habits too. If you’re still feeling tentative, here are a few pointers… • • • •

Go for bedding that works for you. If you don’t like sleeping bags, take your duvet. Calories keep you warm. Eating something before you go to sleep can really help in warming you up and keeping you warm into the night. Wear layers and keep your head warm. Some sleeping bags are designed to go over your head, but if you’re not keen on that then wear a fleecy hat and get the kids to do the same. Head torches are a great idea. Kids love them and they mean you can be hands-free for toilet trips, getting dressed, eating and reading. A torch that hooks onto the top of the tent is also useful so you can find your bits and pieces and play games.

If it does rain….

It’s almost inevitable that the good old British weather will throw a few raindrops your way. But snuggling inside with the pitter-patter overhead is all part of the experience, and it’s not miserable if you go prepared. • • •

Take a trilby, peak cap and/or umbrella An extra gazebo for eating in and playing games can be a god-send in the rain, and means that your sleeping tent won’t get trashed with muddy feet. Card games like Orchard Toys Mini Games, UNO, Whot! Or Dobble go down well.
