Thrifting THE BEST TIPS AND TRICKS TO KEEP IN MIND ON YOUR SEARCH FOR SECOND-HAND STEALS

A

BY SAMMI BURKERT

s an avid thrifter, I am aways looking for new ways to save money and find current trends for less. In order to do so, it is important to always visit a thrift store with an open mind. Thrifting takes patience, and you may not always find exactly what you’re looking for, so you need to get creative! Try on certain pieces even if you are unsure how to style them because you may surprise yourself. Leading into your first trip, give yourself plenty of time. In my experience, I find much more clothing when I take my time than when I am being rushed by a friend or family member. As fun as it may sound to shop with a friend, thrift trips alone usually lead to greater success because no one is pressuring you to move onto the next store. This way, you are able to take your time and browse peacefully. I look through every single piece on the rack to make sure I don’t miss out on a cool find. Depending on what

store you visit, clothing will be sorted on the rack by color, size, or style. Pieces frequently end up in a spot where they don’t belong, so this is why it is important to process through every item. Check the endcaps of every aisle as you pass by because shoppers usually place pieces they change their minds about there. Fitting room return racks are also a potential gold mine because you never know what you’ll find. Because thrift stores carry previously worn and vintage items, the size label does not always matter. After clothes are washed over time they may shrink, and sizing from years ago is not the same as today. For example, I wear a size 6 in bottoms but can fit a size 14 pair of jeans made in the 90s. Never get discouraged if something does not fit the way you anticipated. Sizing is different across brands as they progess through the years. Sometimes I

take 12 items into a fitting room and only leave the store with one, but that’s okay because it is all about the adventure and trying new things. Another reason to experiment with styling items you would not usually wear, is that the prices are low enough to take a risk. Goodwill has always been one of my favorite thrift stores. Here you can find tops for $4.95, bottoms for $6.95, dresses for $5.95, accessories ranging from $2-5, and shoes ranging from $4-12. In addition, certain Goodwill stores are better at identifying designer and name-brand labels in a sea of new donations. These items are always marked up unless something slips through the cracks that an employee does not recognize. Goodwill also receives leftover products from Target that did not sell through, so you could find brand new shoes, accessories, clothing, and home goods from the popular retailer with tags still attached at a lower price. Plato’s Closet Willow Grove, Philly AIDs Thrift, and Buffalo Exchange Center City are Pictured Above is Sammi wearing also fun places to hit in the Philly thrifted overalls ($6), shirt ($8), area. shoes ($8), and bag ($5.95) Some of my favorite things to thrift include mom jeans and band tees. However, these items usually cannot be found in the women’s section. It pays to branch off into the men’s department for the best fitting denim 4 and cool graphic tees.

When searching for denim in the men’s section, it is important to know your waist size in inches. I usually have to add 2 inches to my waist measurement in order to find the perfect fit. For example, I wear a 28 inch waist in women’s, but a 30 inch waist in men’s jeans will fit perfectly high waisted. Men’s denim sizing also includes length, but even if something fits perfectly in the waist you can always cut the hem if it’s too long. Also, if you’re not happy with the style and how the legs fit, but the waist fits perfectly, jeans can easily be cut into shorts. When thrifting, scissors become your best friend in order to customize items to suit your wants and needs.

5

Aside from what to search for, other tips and tricks come in handy for a comfortable and successful experience. Always keep a hand sanitizer in your purse or your car for when you’re finished shopping. It is likely that most of the donated clothes are dirty, so you don’t want to risk the germs and potential illness. Also, it is a good idea to wear comfy clothing and shoes that are easy to remove for your thrift trip because Pack a snack. I usually lose track of time while I’m thrifting because I get in my own zone when hunting down bargains, and it’s always nice to have a granola bar and a bottle of water on hand for a pick-me-up. Try to avoid showing up right before

a store closes because you will most likely feel rushed and not find anything. I recommend researching store hours beforehand. Most local, privately owned shops close earlier and are not open on Sundays or Mondays. While keeping at least a few of these tips in mind, you are bound to return home with a successful thrift haul, and you will already be looking to plan your next trip.

Acne: My Journey of Fighting Insecurities By Bri Moyer I’m going to be honest with you, having acne, SUCKS! There is no easy way to put it. So to all my ladies and gents with acne, this one goes out to you! From all the tears cried and makeup worn, to all the topical treatments and pills used, and to all the doctor visits and money spent. Acne is tricky; its annoying BUT it does not define you.

So here is my journey and what I have learned… My acne journey started back in middle school and is still going. I always struggled with my skin. I was on every topical treatment from the drugstore and dermatologist. If you’ve heard of it, I’ve tried it. I was even on an antibiotic pill for a bit that made me sick, which was not fun. When I went to college, my skin hit an all time low. It was worse than it had ever been in my entire life! And this time, it was painful. Not just mentally but physically.

I would wake up everyday with two to three new pimples that were red and irritated. Wearing makeup only made it hurt more, but I did it anyway. The topical treatments I used were drying When I was in highschool and my skin out and I could not handle throughout my first and a half years in it anymore. Finally I called my mom college, I defined myself as someone crying on the phone saying that “this with acne. That was the main thing I is it, I want to go on Accutane.” saw when I looked into the mirror. And the worst part was when someone who did not have acne told you, “it’s not that bad.” Those were the words that tore me apart.

thing I knew, I was signing my life away to Accutame (okay not really, but I did have to take monthly blood tests to make sure that my liver was functioning properly). I started Accutane in June of 2018, right after my freshman year of college and ended in November of 2018 during the fall semester of my sophomore year. I decided to document my journey by taking pictures every so often. I also did a make-up-free photoshoot the day before starting accutane. Doing that photoshoot was empowering. It allowed me to share my flaws and be proud that I am not perfect. It also made me feel like a role model for others who are struggling with acne. To this day I am grateful for my journey to hell and back. I have had clear skin for a year now and appreciate it because of everything I went through. I am proud to show my skin off and to share my journey.

CURRENT TRENDS BY RACHEL SPEICHER

ANIMAL PRINT Street style has begun to resemble an actual zoo. From leopard and snake prints to zebra and tiger stripes, animal spots are about to dominate all of our fall and winter wardrobes. Some people consider animal print to be a timeless fashion, but lately we’ve been seeing it everywhere. From Gucci and Versace’s runway shows to street style outerwear, skirts, shirts, and accessories, animal print is here to stay. Animal print jackets and shoes have been super popular and an easy way to incorporate the prints into your look!

UTILITATIAN STYLE We are seeing the “army” look everywhere on the streets. From boiler suits as well as cargo pants and detailed pockets, the utility trend has been described as “function meets fashion.” We often associate army green, khaki, brown, black, and most neutral colors with this trend. From the catwalk to street style we’ve seen this trend not only in women’s fashion but in men’s fashion as well. Popular styles for fall and winter are oversized coats and cargo pants with lots of buttons and hardware.

HAIR ACCESSORIES Proven by instagram and bloggers, all year hair accessories have been a big trend and it’s not stopping anytime soon. This includes everything from pearl hairpins, bobby pins, hair clips, barrettes, big claws, to colorful scrunchies. There is really no hair accessory out of style. These accessories not only keep your hair in place, but also serves as a way to express yourself! Other popular hair accessories right now are silk hair scarves, bedazzled hair pins, and wide headbands.

Breaking News:

The Downfall

of

Forever 21

By Alena Chuprinsky Pursuing a career in the fashion industry will always keep you on your toes. In an industry that is always changing, innovating, and evolving, no day is the same. In order to keep a company up and running, one needs to constantly adapt to current trends around them. This is something that some stores and fashionistas, like myself, tend to struggle with .

Because

of this,

t h e r e m ay n o l o n ger be a forever in

‘F o r e v e r 21’.

W ith over 800 stores throughout four continents, Forever 21 is known for their vast variety of affordable, fast fashion clothing. Vast being the key word. Some might say because of their large assortment of clothing, shopping can become overwhelming. From personal experience, the store is always in shambles. Shoes are in disarray on the floor, shirts are never sized, and the sales associates have very little knowledge which has turned some shoppers away, like myself. These issues are just scratching the surface of the problems Forever 21 faces. At one time, Forever 21 was the empire of fast fashion clothing. However, with the recent concerns among 11 millennials on environmental issues,

fast fashion is something many are choosing to stray away from. Instead, young adults are gearing towards more sustainable fashion. Since many fast fashion companies target 16-24 year olds, they’ve decided to make the change for not only their companies, but the earth. While competitors such as H&M have adapted to these concerns, Forever 21 has not. Don’t get me wrong, H&M has also been guilty for their negative effect on the environment, but I give them props for their tiny steps to help move in the right direction. Roughly six years ago they began a collection called “H&M Conscious” which is a line made of recycled and organic clothing. While H&M is making positive strides to better their quality of clothes and the earth, Forever 21 continues to do the opposite. By 2015, they had nearly 480 stores and a total net worth of $5.9 billion. However, that was not good enough for the company.

W ithin the next three years, they planned on opening 600 new stores across the world. This is where their downward spiral begun. W ith recent studies showing more than 60% of millennials prefer online shopping over brick and mortar stores, it was clear what companies needed to do in order to survive--stay away from investing in brick and mortar

Grande and Forever 21 allegedly tried signing a contract back in 2018 but could not agree on compensation, so Grande said ‘Thank u, next’. Now, Grande claims that the store used a model who coincidentally looks very much like Grande in her hit music video ‘7 Rings’. Do Won Chang and Jin Sook, co-owners and founders, stated that filing under Chapter 11 still leaves the company with some wiggle room to continue opperations. This has allowed Forever 21 to reconstruct their brand and possibly help move them in the right direction. They are choosing to close all stores in more than 40 countries, including 178 stores in the US. The owners also claimed that they will be doing a lot more in the online side of business.

My Summer Internship: In New York City By Emily Miller

Growing up, New York City has been the place that felt completely like home to me. I have constantly found so much inspiration from the city and so much passion from the drive of everyone surrounding me. I have been lucky enough to spend the last two summers in this dreamy place with two amazing companies. Each of these companies had their special moments to me, one being a smaller company and the other being a large corporation. This past summer, I had the opportunity to intern for a company called Meryl Diamond LTD., which is a design and manufacturing company for LOGO by Lori Goldstein, which is best known as being seen on QVC. I was able to receive this internship through the New York Immersion course offered at Jefferson. For that class, my classmates and I created a line extension for LOGO. After researching the company and speaking with its team members, I knew I wanted to work with them. Months after ending my New York Immersion class and hearing from the MDL team, I accepted the position as Merchandising Intern. I never would have 17 changed that for the world!

I want to include some of my biggest tips in here for being able to network and grab opportunities left and right. I first would like to recommend business cards! I know that sounds slightly intimidating to some, but it is super easy and cheap to get hundreds. Most websites come with easy templates for you to fill out which makes it super easy! I handed my business card to the MDL team, got an email, and sent over my resume! Another tip that I have is to join all job searching platforms, such as LinkedIn, HandShake, Indeed, and Glassdoor. There are so many opportunities that these platforms could potentially provide. You can even opt in to recieve daily emails with jobs that match your skill set. After a handful of internships and jobs, I have found these tips to be successful. New York City is a place where I find so much passion and drive. I learned these tips through the different paths I have taken in the city. It is such a blessing in my life to have had these opportunities. Taking the first step in your career is the most important task, so do not be afraid to just go for the dream. @emilypearlmiller

Life Abroad: Top Three Cities By Chloe O’Neill Studying abroad in Rome was life changing. Not only living in Rome for four months but being able to travel every weekend abroad was so eye opening. I was able to understand different cultures first hand by being directly immersed in them. While abroad I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to seven different countries, eleven cities, four fifteen hour bus rides and have countless memories. Every single city I traveled to was absolutely incredible.

1

Santorini

Santorini Greece was absolutely breathtaking. It is one of the Cyclades islands within the Aegean sea. Two towns Fira and Oia are placed up on mountains overlooking the sea. While in Santorini we took a boat to an active volcano and swam in the hot springs and mud baths which were formed by volcanic eruptions. We then rode donkeys up the side of a mountain to the town of Fira.

The Amalfi Coast in Italy was one of our first trips out of Rome. We traveled to Sorrento by bus took a booze cruise to Positano relaxed on the beach and explored the city. Positano is a cliff side village with cafes and boutiques. The next day we took a boat tour around the coast and were able to see multiple grottos, and then were taken to the beautiful island of Capri which is known for its limoncello. In Capri we took a chair lift up to the top of Monte Solaro the highest point of Capri These views were absolutely breathtaking.

3

Interlaken

2

Amalfi Coast

Interlaken Switzerland was such an amazing trip. We took a very long, fifteen hour bus ride from Rome to Interlaken but it was totally worth it. The town is placed between two lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz hence its name Interlaken. We went for thanksgiving so the city was all decked out for Christmas. The little town is full of activities to do some of the activities I did was a chocolate making class, paragliding and kayaking in lake Brienz.

RONSON HALL: A PHOTOGRAPHER’S DREAM? How Two Freshman turned Mundane Spots into Desirable Photo-Shoot Worthy Locations By Brianna Giarraputo

Our editor-in-chief sat down with two talented freshman, Lindsey Dadourian (fashion design) and Elise Mears (fashion merchandising and management) to learn about their process for shooting the cover image and photos featured in our first issue. Lindsey, a gifted photographer, and Elise, an exquisite model, befriended each other this fall and it was a match made in heaven. With Lindsey behind the lens and Elise in front of it, a creative monochromatic masterpiece was formed.

19

Why did you choose Jefferson? Lindsey Dadourian: It was the only school I applied to. I came here and I loved it. I knew I wanted to come here immediately. Elise Mears: I wanted to find a school that had a good fashion program and I really liked the campus and how diverse it was.

Then about a year ago, I got signed with a small agency in Philly and now I can do it both for fun and sometimes with jobs. What do you enjoy most about taking photos and modeling?

Are there any photographers, artists, models, celebrities you look up to or draw inspiration from?

Finally, what is the most important thing to remember when photographing or modeling?

LD: A ton! Jessica Kobeissi, Brandon Woelfel, and Russell James are my biggest photographer aspirations in the entire world.

LD: Focusing on settings and surroundings like lighting and figuring out all the details that make it a good picture.

EM: Particularly Kendell Jenner, Zendaya, and Adut Akech. For this shoot, how did you land on location and outfit? Is there a story behind it?

EM: Make sure you are moving around into different poses to make it easier for the photographer and just try to do what you can to make the best photo that you can get. __

LD: Well, Elise got a package from a company she had worked with previously and in it was a red jumpsuit. And we looked at each other and were like “oh, this is gorgeous.” We thought the color was perfect for this time of year. So, we were walking around Ronson and hanging out and there was this couch and the color of the couch matched perfectly with the jumpsuit. So, we went for it and it worked out. EM: And we were afraid the lighting was going to be terrible because it is a residence hall and it was backlit. It’s like a gross college lounge but the photos turned out really good. People were staring at us like “what are they doing” but we didn’t care. It was kind of funny.

5 Tips For Models Beginning their Career By Elise Mears Modeling has always been an interest of mine, but I always looked at it as something I “could” do. I was interested in photography and I took multiple photo classes in high school. I would always have photoshoots with my friends and loved creating new things. But, I realized I liked being in front of the camera more than taking the photos. It took me until my senior year of high school to really start to pursue modeling. I signed with Reinhard Agency in Philadelphia about a year ago and they really helped me get jobs and further exposure. I’ve recently got into runway and doing my first few fashion shows, but I like print work more! Overall, I’ve been able to continue modeling and pursue my passion for fun as well.

1.

The first thing I would say is just be you! Becoming a model is all about creating a brand for yourself. You want the photographers to capture what they want, but also capture what you want as well. Although it depends on the type of shoot, you want the photos to be unique and express who you are. Meeting a lot of new people is also very common in this industry. Companies will want to know who you really are before they hire you. So don’t be afraid to let your true colors show!

2.

Another thing that is very important is to be confident, but also not too confident. You want to be comfortable in front of the camera and confident in what you’re doing. All photographers work differently, but it makes it easier when the model

3.

knows what they’re doing. There is always going to be people watching you, especially on set.

To go along with confidence,

friends and just take pictures. This is a great way to work on poses and learn what poses/ angles make you look best in front of the camera. Plus, working

4.

on your walk is also important if you’re interested in runway.

5.

Another tip that I think is important but often overlooked is to be safe. Models are vulnerable, especially starting out and it’s important to keep your guard up. Do not fall for ‘modeling schools’ or agencies that charge a ton of money. There are plenty of other ways to enter

Lastly, modeling doesn’t have to be as professional as it seems. You can just do it for fun and make it whatever you want! However, if you are serious about modeling, you can take

the industry and you just have to be smart about it. Also, if you ever go to a photoshoot and it’s with someone you don’t know it’s never a bad idea to bring a family member or friend.

steps to build a portfolio and reach out to agencies.

All in all, modeling is a way for me to express myself and have fun creating new art with new people. I love how I can do it for fun, but also have the more professional side as well. So can you!

Holiday Look Book Let’s talk about holiday shopping, it is fun finding the perfect gift, but it can also be stressful. I always like to wear an outfit that makes me feel happy and confident, and this outfit does just that! This sweater has been a go-to the past two years and I am so obsessed with any over-the-knee boots. Also, use a reusable bag this holiday season to be more sustainable!!

Cheers to 2020, and hoping this decade is as iconic as the 1920s!! This blue dress is perfect for for any New Year’s party whether it’s at someones house or at a club. I love that it this dress ties at the waist and has some great flow for dancing around. You may be a little chilly so I recommend adding a fur jacket or making it more casual with some denim. 41

Monochromatic looks are always in! I love playing around with textures, such as wearing leather pants and a sweater. It makes each piece pop instead of getting lost. I also love adding fun shoes and earrings to spice up the outfit, while also adding a pop. I love this outfit for a night out with the family or any holiday tradition.

If cozy is your vibe then this outfit is for you!! Grab your favorite pair of joggers, I personally love doing a bold color, and thrown on your favorite sweater. This look is something I would wear on Christmas Day. Best part, the joggers give you room for all those extra holiday cookies.

The Fashion District, located in Center City along Market Street, has much to offer between clothing stores, shoe stores, dining, theater, and more! The grand opening of the mall was on September 19th, 2019. Since then, the District has been a popular part of locals’ routines in the city as well as visitors and tourists. With over one million square feet, the district is not a quick trip and if you are a shopaholic, this could take a whole day!

Before it became the fashion district, this location was originally known as the Gallery at Market East. The Gallery opened in 1978 and had a 40 year run. It faced multiple challenges to survive such as loss of its best anchor stores, it’s shabby reputation, and the lack of decorated walls and entrances. Having a new vision, the gallery’s owner, Thus Preit, transformed the struggling mall into the new Philadelphia Fashion District. The District was transformed from plain white walls to beautiful art-covered walls. Some of the walls are filled with sequins where you can use your finger to design an image or write a message. Over a million dollars was spent on permanent public art while they added white walls, marble floors, and brighter lighting to make the district appear brighter, Meanwhile, other walls have created a more artsy vibe to where people can take pictures in front of it and make memories.

Some modifications to the districts floor plan are still being made. The top level floor will house office spaces called WeWork, and it will also house a space for musicians and artists called REC Philly. This new music facility will have recording studios, visual labs, a podcast studio, rehearsal space, production rooms, meditation rooms, private conference rooms, and a large event space. The owner of the District is making the top level into an AMC Cinema, which will be the first-run movie theater in Center City in almost 30 years. The rest of the top level will have a family bowling alley and Amusement Center. This attracts not only Fashion lovers, but, families of all ages to take a fun break while enjoying a long day of shopping.

One family favorite is known as Candytopia, which is an art exhibit of candy that includes fake Warhols, candy samples, and a ball pit made of fake marshmallows. There is more than a dozen rooms of candy art at the exhibit. Since Candytopia is so well known and well populated, families have to purchase their tickets in advance. Philly is known for hosting much of the foodies as locals, the district had to include some fan favorites like BurgerFi, Chick-Fil-A, and Philly Pretzel Factory. There is already a wide variety from coffee to wine, to cinnamon buns to burgers. It’s smart to have a variety for such a big up and coming tourist attraction. The district has only been open for almost a month and it still has some dining options on the way. More places including Auntie’s Anne’s, Big Gay Ice Cream, Freshii, and Poke Sushi Express.

All in all, the fashion district allows you to enjoy shopping with some nice dining. Plan to come hungry because there is a wide variety of options which is expanding by the minute! From the variety of stores to restaurants, art-work and family fun activities, this place has an exorbitant amount to offer. If you could imagine yourself in a perfect world, the Fashion District is for you! __
