Doing it for real

2022 Curriculum changes

We’re also introducing two ground-breaking new modules that all students, on-campus or online, will participate in.

Keeping pace with industry

Study that makes an impact In your second year, you will complete a university-wide, challenge-based module. You’ll work with students from across the university on a ‘live’ project that could involve pioneering research, businessfocused innovation or a collaboration with an industry partner.

What defines our approach at Falmouth is our future-focused outlook and our close connections with industry. That’s why we’re currently updating our approach to teaching and learning. Our courses are designed to ensure our students are at the cutting edge of innovation, new technologies and emerging sectors. They leave Falmouth ready to step into the workplace, equipped to thrive in a fast-paced economy. Research shows that the key skills in the future economy will be creativity, digital expertise, problem solving and teamwork. Therefore, we are currently developing our new curriculum framework, to be launched in the 2022 academic year.

Small changes, big opportunities The changes to our curriculum framework are simple, but they will offer really exciting opportunities to our students. In short, we’re adjusting the modules on all of our undergraduate courses, to ensure they’re all 20 or 40 credits. Standardising module building blocks opens up big possibilities; it provides the chance for you to work across subject boundaries, collaborating and cocreating, blending involvement with learning, research and innovation across disciplines.

16

Equipped for the workplace In your third year, you’ll also complete an entrepreneurship module. Whether you dream about joining a world-leading brand, or aspire to setting up your own business, this module is about giving you greater understanding of the jobs economy you’ll be joining as a graduate. Working on your ‘final projects’, you’ll explore the application and demonstration of innovation, and develop a clear understanding of the industrial context as you bring your work into the wider world.

Fostering a collaborative, creative community

We know that creatives, innovators and entrepreneurs don’t want to be pigeonholed. They’re interested in good ideas, no matter the subject. That’s why we add value to the university experience by giving all our students access to the Guest Speaker Programme. This means you can immerse yourself in fascinating content from within, and beyond, your subject interest. We also make learning content available from across the University, where suitable. As a Falmouth student, you’ll have access to materials from other courses, further making you a part of our multi-disciplinary, collaborative, creative community.

17

AIMING FOR THE STARS

British-Nigerian R&B artist Tony Njoku graduated from BA(Hons) Popular Music in the summer of 2016. Since then, life has been a whirlwind for the rising star. In late 2019, Tony was listed as one of The Guardian’s ‘Ones to watch’. The column focuses on artists to look out for in the world of pop and rock, and described him as having a gift for combing an array of musical perspectives into a unified whole. What have been some of your highlights since you graduated? Each year, my career has experienced exponential growth, but it’s felt like a natural progression. I’ve done some really exciting gigs, from playing at The Roundhouse in London to performing on the main stage at the Green Man Festival. My latest single has been played on BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and 6 Music and I’m really pleased to be touring with Mercurynominated artist Ghostpoet soon.

“I like to think there are no limits on what I can do and how far I can go.”

How would you sum up your experience of studying at Falmouth? Falmouth’s the perfect place to study, to incubate and nurture ideas and to discover more about yourself and your music. It was a great way to learn, play, explore and experiment. How has your musical style progressed over time? It’s been a gradual progression in terms of the goals I’ve set and where I am right now. Music is very necessary for me. If I don’t have enough music playing around me, I get music dehydration and don’t feel very well! It compels me to keep on making music and explore what’s going on in myself, my head and my heart. It’s self-discovery and it’s necessary for me to have music. What’s your aim for the future? I used to be ashamed of saying this, but I really want to win a Mercury Prize. In the immediate future, more touring is going to be imperative for me, I want to do more collaborations and stretch my creativity into doing more visual arts and audio-visual work. I like to think there are no limits on what I can do and how far I can go.

ILLUSTRATING THE POINT

Right after graduating from Falmouth with a first in BA(Hons) Illustration in 2019, Jake Hawkins landed a job as an in-house illustrator and designer at The Telegraph. What happened once you left Falmouth? Things happened really quickly after graduating and I ended up moving to London for my career. I got a full-time position as an in-house illustrator and designer at The Telegraph. I’ve also had the opportunity to take on some freelance projects, including a GAY TIMES cover and an important report cover for Iraq’s first LGBTQ+ organisation. I was recently shortlisted for The World Illustration Awards in the new talent, editorial category for my illustration accompanying the Telegraph story about Brexit. What does your role at The Telegraph include? I work as part of the Visual Storytelling team in the editorial section of The Telegraph. My work ranges from creating animations of the day’s main news stories for Snapchat to creating illustrations for The Telegraph’s website, paper and other social media channels. I also illustrate a weekly column and even get to pitch my own ideas to the editors from time to time. The work environment is fast-paced, with tight deadlines, but I am well looked after and supported in my role, doing what I love, surrounded by fellow creatives and good people.

the tone/voice of the content. If a subject is more delicate or sensitive, it may be better to create more visually abstract outcomes. Some subjects are naturally more playful and engaging than others and are therefore easier to work with, but I enjoy the challenge and always look forward to seeing the outcome, whether that’s online or in print. What inspires your work? My work has definitely been inspired by social justice issues and the fight for equality. When studying at Falmouth in my final year, this was the overarching theme that connected so much of my work and fortunately this has led to some fantastic commissions since graduating. In a broader sense, art in general, whether illustrative or performance, can inspire me, especially when it transcends language, while making its point clear. For me, clever conceptual illustrations are always the aim. How do you feel that Falmouth prepared you for your career? There are numerous, very important transferable skills that I learnt on the Illustration course, but conceptual thinking and visual problem solving have been crucial in my role as a designer from the get-go! Whether I’m working on an illustration for print or an animation for Snapchat, these skills determine the strength of the end product.

I often create content based around Brexit, finance, technology and business. Regardless of the subject matter, I always start by mind mapping, conceptualising and figuring out

CELEBRATING WOMEN

International student Georgina Abreu graduated with a degree in Fashion Photography in 2020. What is the most challenging aspect of your work? I would say that one of the challenges of being part of a community of creators is constantly trying to be unique in your own way and to be able to inspire others; to make images that have an impact on people. What piece of advice would you give to someone starting out in fashion photography? Be experimental and not afraid of trying new things or making mistakes. Only from that will you learn and evolve and know what you like and don’t like, as well as building your voice as a creative. Trust yourself and your eye and make work that is meaningful to you. Put your heart, sweat and tears in to achieve it, but it’s important to be resilient and understand that not everything will go as planned. In the end, it’s all worth it. I would also say; start going to the gym – because your arms and back will suffer from carrying all that equipment! What was a highlight during your studies? In my third year, I won the International Women’s Day 2020 Mission competition by EyEm – a global photography community. The competition was about celebrating women from all over the world and there were

more than 35,000 submissions altogether. I decided to enter this competition specifically because it was about International Women’s Day and most of the subjects in my work are women. I always try to represent female subjects from an angle that is empowering and genuine or even abstract, showcasing their natural glow and beauty, so I think the judges really saw that in my work. The winning photo was an image inspired by childhood and play. This photoshoot was part of a project I did in my second year at University and it’s called ‘Um-do-li-tá’ – the title of a game I used to play when I was younger. Through these photographs, I was aiming to embrace the pureness of being, by representing childhood and blissful ignorance of simpler times. I was hoping that while looking at these images, viewers would remember what it once was to be young and let the child inside them speak, as they often have the right answer for everything. What would you like to do next? I’m planning on doing some internships and volunteer work first, to get some experience in the industry, while also working on personal projects and sharing my work. And hopefully next year, I want to move to a different country in Europe and try to freelance or work in a fashion production company. I really want to be able to work with different fashion brands, creating fashion films and imagery for them. I’d also love to do some editorials for magazines.

PRODUCTION VALUES Isaac Oluyadi graduated in 2019 and works at Feral Interactive, a leading publisher and developer of games for macOS, Linux and mobile platforms. What made you want to be a producer? I’ve always been the kind of person who’s quite extroverted, had a true passion for planning and loved getting together with my friends, whether working on games or your typical university activities. But then I found this quote from video game producer Frank Rogan, which really resonated with me:

“If someone says, ‘Let’s drive to Vegas,’ the producer starts thinking about whether there’s gas in the car, are the tires properly inflated and when was the last oil change.” As cheesy and as this line was, it truly was the first time I realised where I wanted to go with game development – I wanted to be a producer. What do games producers do? Producers are the ones that do the planning, enjoy the planning and do it well! It’s imperative to have some base level understanding of the other disciplines because, in most cases, you’re the main vessel of communication between your colleagues. Whenever I’m in a leadership position, I have the mentality that I may not be the most talented person in the room, but I have the ability to join all of these amazing individuals together to create outstanding games that they can all be proud of. That’s what makes me happy.

What games have you worked on so far? I’ve worked on a range of games in the past few months, including Life Is Strange 2 and Total War: Three Kingdoms. What have you learnt from your time at Falmouth? Three things really maintained my motivation in university and helped me form a cohesive team: listening, learning the art of criticism and staying passionate. Listening and being understanding – looking for an acceptable compromise with your teammates – will take you miles. Try to understand people’s perspectives and they will be twice as willing to see yours. Criticism is also pivotal to a great team. If you don’t like something, be sure to say it constructively. There is a difference between being needlessly blunt and honest! The same goes with receiving criticism. Try not to be overly defensive, as people need to feel comfortable discussing critical ideas with you. And finally, passion. If you’re reading this, you may just have been like me four years ago – passionate about games, not knowing what discipline you wanted to go into and possibly even doubting the validity of this career path. I will tell you now with complete confidence that it was the best decision I made in my life. The game industry is growing rapidly, and as every year passes, there are more and more opportunities to be had.

WILD ADVENTURES

Elliot Caunce graduated from Press & Editorial Photography in 2020 and is now a freelance visual storyteller in Dundee. He works with clients such as The Guardian, BBC Scotland, BBC Sounds, The Social, Scottish Dance Theatre, WOMAD Festival and The Review Magazine. Your final project was published by The BBC and The Guardian, tell us more about it. The project is called Off-Grid Scotland: Stories of Self-isolation in the Wild and it explores the stories of hermits living in Scotland.

I actually met one person completely by chance while on the way to meet another hermit who is known to live in one of Scotland’s remotest regions – I couldn’t believe my luck! What were the people you met like? Jake moved into his off-grid farmhouse in the 70s with his wife and daughter after falling out with his landlord in Aberdeen. When the marriage ended, he stayed there alone, but would consider the possibility of marriage again in the future.

I graduated in 2020, when the pandemic meant that the concept of self-isolation was being widely practiced. The idea behind this collection of casestudies is to challenge your perception of solitude while simultaneously offering an escape route for the imagination.

Sara is a successful author who writes books about religious fantasy and solitude, informed by the Roman Catholic faith. She started spending more time alone after her marriage broke down in 1993.

It’s a love letter to the great outdoors, inspired by the cathartic need to get out and disconnect. I’m a huge fan of the great outdoors. I don’t consider myself a landscape photographer, so I wanted to find a story that incorporated people in this environment.

Davey moved into a tent 12 years ago, after he was diagnosed with a critical heart condition and told he needed a transplant. Instead of waiting for a heart donation, he decided to come out and life in the wild on the edge of a loch, to the east of Fort William.

I’ve won several awards for the work, including one from the ‘Portrait of Britain 2020’ and the Best in Show title at the Association of Photography Student Awards.

Ken is known as the Hermit of Treig. He’s lived alone in an isolated log cabin, without any modern facilities, since 1984. His one concession to modern life is an emergency locator beacon to use in case he gets ill.

Who did you meet and photograph? I’ve portrayed four modern day hermits – Jake (pictured), Davey, Sara and Ken – who have chosen it as a way of life and enjoy the solitude.

What are your plans for the future? I’d love to continue making documentaries and working as a multimedia journalist.

DESIGNED FOR LIFE Niall Jones, CEO of Benthos Buttons, graduated from Sustainable Product Design in 2020.

How much does Falmouth care about sustainability?

What made you want to study Sustainable Product Design?

It’s got to be the best in the country for sustainable product design. Just look at the campus – being in such a sustainably conscious environment increases your creativity.

I’m a natural problem solver and I’ve always enjoyed art and design generally, so Sustainable Product Design felt like a really good fit. Coming from Wales and being a surfer, I’ve always had a passion for the ocean. This connection helped me realise what’s going on with the environment and drove me to learn more about it and sustainable practices. What made you choose to study at Falmouth? I learnt about it from a friend of mine who was studying photography and I really loved the lifestyle. When I visited, I could see the potential it had for me and my life. What makes studying here special?

Would you recommend the course to prospective students? Yes – any day of the week! You really get to build personal relationships with other students and with the lecturers, which leads to opportunities for jobs and projects, and great practice for working in the real world. You also end up with a well-rounded skillset on the course, which is great for employers and really useful in our industry. What have you gone on to do since graduating?

I think that Falmouth helps people see design differently. Interrogating ideas, finding problems and then solving them is a great skill to have. And while you might not be able to change the whole world, you can learn to make a difference. Falmouth helps to change mindsets.

I’ve created my own business called Benthos Buttons, which uses ethically sourced marine nylon from old fishing nets to create sustainable buttons for fashion garments. The business has gained international interest and the buttons are being used by a variety of clients, including Falmouth Fashion Design graduate and clothes designer Ella Griffee.

What was the most memorable part of your studies?

What are your hopes for Benthos Buttons in the future?

I loved our second-year show. It was my first exhibition and I showed the work I’d done with Alder Sportswear to create a special hanger for surfers to dry their wetsuits and accessories. It was a great moment, where everyone on my course could come together and feel proud of their hard work.

I’d love to grow the business, bring on some bigger brands and have my own 3D printing lab to make the buttons in house in the future. That way, I can see exactly how much energy I’m using and make the whole process as sustainable as possible.

CREATIVE COLLABORATION

Jessica Kielstra and Nina Forbes graduated in Creative Advertising in 2020. They’ve formed a creative team where, in their own words: Jess does the pictures, Nina does the words. What inspired you to study at Falmouth? JK: It was the idea of being able to attend a creative institution and be surrounded by creative people all the time. The course itself has a very industry-focused approach that really appealed to me too. NF: It was the charm of a seaside town. Growing up close to London, I was keen to taste a new pace of life. When I visited for the open day, I went to the sea and it was so close to campus, and it gave me this exhilaration but also a calmness. It was totally perfect for creativity. The course lecturers are ad-legends too, so I knew I’d learn a lot. What led you to study Creative Advertising? JK: As soon as I read the course description for Creative Advertising, it was like someone had written down all the skills, opportunities and types of craft that I’d been looking for. NF: We both love the fast-paced high-pressure atmosphere, and there’s always so much going on that you never get bored. What was the highlight of your studies? Both: During our third year, we had a live brief set by a London advertising agency to create

a campaign for confused.com. We struggled all week to come up with something, until right at the last minute we found the idea of making an animation featuring Snoop Dogg with two heads! They loved our idea and the hard work paid off as we were offered a month’s paid placement by the agency. Christmas made. What happened once you graduated? Both: Before graduating, we entered the D&AD awards, which are considered the Oscars of advertising. We won a New Blood award, just weeks after graduation, which led to the opportunity to work at Happiness, a Belgian agency run by one of the judges, which works with big brands like Toyota and Carlsberg. We moved to Antwerp to work for one of the top three advertising agency networks in the world and produced live work for big brands. How do you think your time at Falmouth helped you succeed? Both: Practising craft and nailing our portfolio is what got us this job. But knowing how to get in front of people in the industry is also a massive skill and something that the course works hard to teach. So much of the industry is about knowing how to make an opportunity out of every chance you get – using your creative thinking to get a foot in the door and then applying it to your work once you’re in. The combination of theory, practice and industry focus is key to the course and we can really see the value in it.

BY GEN Z, FOR GEN Z Adam Rockley, Business and Digital Marketing graduate, and Chloe Lingard, Business and Management student, are helping student-run agency Gallos to flourish. What is Gallos? AR: It’s a student-led agency that looks to connect brands with a Gen Z audience. We believe there’s a gap in the market where brands aren’t doing this effectively and that’s where we come in. We are Generation Z, we know what works and what doesn’t. Whether it’s aligning brand values or creating content that has the right feel for this specific audience, we’re able to help our clients deliver projects that truly hit the mark. The current focus is digital marketing, but as it grows, we’re hoping to transform it into something that all students can get involved in and collaborate with. Gallos is something that enhances the student experience and gives people a chance to start earning while you’re learning. What are your roles within Gallos? CL: I’ve been involved with Gallos since the start of my degree and I’m currently the Managing Director of Gallos – helping to develop the agency, so that it benefits as many students as possible. AR: I helped to set up Gallos and was the CEO while I was studying. But now that I’ve graduated, I work with Chloe and the rest of the team one day a week as a Student Support Officer – mentoring the current and incoming

members to make sure they get the best out of the experience. This includes anything from guiding students through pitches and client meetings, to simply listening when there are issues that need addressing. What makes it so special? CL: It’s student-led and student-focused. We’re really fortunate. It’s such a great opportunity and not many other universities are doing it. AR: Gallos is a great tool to help people maximise their learning – honing their skills while working on real projects. What kind of work does Gallos do? AR: We’ve worked with a variety of local businesses, as well as start-ups at Launchpad – Falmouth’s innovative postgraduate incubation and acceleration programme. Some of the most fun things we’ve done have been for the University itself, including social media campaigns and a flash mob during an open day, which both current and prospective students loved. We’re currently working on bringing together pockets of talent from across the University and working with small local businesses to help them, while giving students invaluable experience. Is Gallos just for Cornwall Business School students? Both: Absolutely not! We want everyone to get involved and benefit from Gallos.

NETTING AWARDS

One of the things that defines Falmouth’s approach, is the opportunities it offers students to get stuck into real projects in collaboration with industry. For Falmouth Graduate Natalys Wilcox, this meant becoming a set runner on the BAFTA-award winning film Bait. The feature film, which examines the tensions between traditional industries in Cornwall and its growing popularity with tourists and secondhome owners, was produced by Falmouth lecturer Mark Jenkin in association with Falmouth University. It was filmed using a vintage hand-cranked Bolex camera, using 16mm monochrome handprocessed film and then post produced in 4k at the School of Film & Television’s state-of-the-art grading and dubbing facility. Natalys was one of several students from the School of Film & Television who got to gain realworld experience working as part of the crew with an experienced team. Bait has won a host of awards, as well as picking up a BAFTA in the Outstanding Debut for a British Writer, Director or Producer category.

What was your role in the crew? I was the set runner on Bait. Runners work under the direction of the production staff and help the filming to run smoothly. It was the first film I’d worked on properly outside of student films and it was great to see how people who’d been working on films for years work and how they interacted as a crew. What was the experience like? It was really good to see how the connections with other filmmakers last – especially on Mark’s film where everyone had worked together before. Basically keeping those connections and making sure you stay in touch with other filmmakers is really important. What did the experience teach you? People will try really hard to make something if they share in the vision. Lots of people tried really hard (on Bait) because they like Mark and they liked the project.

“It was great to see how people who’d been working on films for years work and how they interacted as a crew.”

Our online degrees have all been crafted specifically for you to study remotely. Through a combination of lectures, webinars, tutorials and collaborative work, you’ll be encouraged to push your limits, explore your creativity and develop professional skills and expertise that make you ready for industry.

Online lectures and webinars You will learn from practicing professionals via online lectures and webinars where you can connect with your fellow students for stimulating discussions. You’ll use our dedicated Virtual Learning Environment that allows you to connect with what’s being taught, ask questions and collaborate. Our lectures are pre-recorded and re-watchable, so you won’t have to worry about attending them live. Your course materials will be uploaded to the Virtual Learning Environment at the end of each week, giving you plenty of time to plan your workload for any upcoming studies.

Supportive tutors and Student Advisors  While you’re studying, you’ll be supported academically by tutors and the Student Advisor team. They’ll run a weekly live session, usually in an evening, that you can either attend live or will be recorded so you can catch-up later if it doesn’t fit your schedule.

The Student Advisor team is on hand throughout your studies to answer questions and help you access any support you need. They’ll help you make the most of your online learning experience offering support via email, phone, WhatsApp and video meetings.
