Hearth House Location: Truckee, CA Discipline: hospitality design Concept: evolution of the ski Programming: ski storage, communal kitchen, lounges, Finnish sauna, climbing gym, private guest suites, hostel, outdoor spaces, therapy rooms Programs Used: Revit, Enscape, Photoshop With the recent surge in popularity of big mountain skiing, there has also been an increase in the number of accidents and deaths. This has left both extreme skiers and their families feeling lost and alone. At Hearth House, those affected will be able to come together as a celebratory community of skiers and loved ones to learn about the culture, gain meaningful relationships, and heal from any pain through both traditional and alternative therapies. Located at the birthplace of extreme skiing in Squaw Valley, CA, Hearth House aims to use a hospitality-based “apres ski” model to create a positive, social environment for people to gather, celebrate, and heal while staying true to the authenticity of ski culture. User Profile
extreme skier Typically in their early 20s and 30s, this user is athletic, adventurous, and places value on authentic experiences in terms of both social and environmental interactions. While generally outgoing and laid-back, this user may be secretly suffering from years of trauma and loss.
Concept The ski has evolved over time from a functional tool to something of recreational value. This evolution is a symbol of the skier mindset that is dedicated to innovation, while staying true to where they came from. The straight to dynamic change in form represents the celebratory and positive nature of Hearth House.

outdoor social pods Skiers are inherently drawn to the outdoors. With multiple access points to the outside from the interior, as well as constant visibility of the natural landscape, guests will be able to interact with others, learn from eachother’s experiences, and heal together in a natural, integrated manner. Multiple open wood “pods” allow for various groups of social interaction and storytelling moments to occur. casual lounge outdoor connection

educational speaker zone Many people not involved in the extreme skiing community cannot comprehend why their loved ones participate in the sport when they are aware of all of the risks involved with it. A convertible space for speakers to present and hold “storytelling sessions” around the central hearth will allow all guests to truly learn about the passion behind extreme skiers and the challeneges that come with it.

hostels in ski community When skiers are selecting their accommodations for a ski trip, they typically have two options: 1. a luxurious, expensive hotel that is out of most skiers’ budgets 2. a rundown motel or Airbnb that is dingy and not welcoming finnish sauna therapy
Extreme skiers want to live comfortably while being close to their favorite ski areas, so Hearth House provides ultimate comfort in a casual, approachable way.

Hostels are a major part of ski culture, since most ski destinations utilize hostels as a way for people to socialize and meet others while on a trip. They allow for a communal living feeling while still providing privacy and comfort.
To “sauna” in Finland is a ritualistic tradition that encompasses the entire culture. Saunas in Finland, and most Nordic countries, are used as a place of wellness, health, and healing, as well as a place for loved ones to gather at the end of a busy day and celebrate.
At Hearth House, a central bunk room with recreational areas adjacent to it provides guests who want the true skier experience to stay in a more lively area. Framed views to the outside provides guests with a direct connection to the outdoors, and privacy curtains allow for a sense of their own space.
In terms of socializing, the sauna represents both outward socialization and internal reflection - both activities are accepted in the sauna, and it should be up to the users to respect one’s choice to interact or just sit and reflect. Healing benefits include better sleep, relaxation, pain relief, and even cardiovascular disease prevention - which are all important for mental health healing.

Located in the Plus Hostel in Florence, Italy, Simply Local is a casual restaurant that serves up delicious local Italian cusine at affordable prices to the many groups of diverse travelers staying at the hostel. Following a theme of contrast and division, opposing materials, colors, and forms are used to create a unique yet harmonious design this is a representation of the gentrification issue that has been rapidly occurring in Italian cities such as Florence. This healthcare facility is centered around the idea of creating a safe sanctuary for those who enter as patients, visitors, or staff. The goal is to create a comfortable, relaxing environment that connects visitors to nature to reduce stress. The emergency department and urgent care are designed to keep staff and patients separate to create better work flow. The presence of abundant daylight is a key feature in all heavily used areas of the hospital. The long-term care portion of the facility focuses on Alzheimer’s and dementia care, which is designed to be familiar to the older generation and features a mid-century design aesthetic. Coworking Loft Location: Helsinki, Finland Discipline: corporate design, branding Concept: wellness and biophilia Programming: open work area, private offices, sound proof conference room, telephone booths, full kitchen, meditation/wellness room, dining area Programs Used: Revit, Enscape, Photoshop, The Urban Coworking Loft is a modern approach to daily work life. This building brings people of all backgrounds into one central, creative workplace in order to foster collaboration and innovation. The brand places value on sustainability, ergonomics, minimalism, and creating a collaborative work environment. I followed three basic prinicples of biophilia in all aspects of the design: natural light, curved lines, organic materials, and areas of prospect and refuge. Using a variety of open and enclosed spaces allows flexibility and comfort, and also creates a sense of refuge while having visibility to the rest of the space. Design Studio Location: Los Angeles, CA Discipline: corporate design Concept: lattes and comfort Programming: client meeting area, communal work table for employees, enclosed materials library, outdoor lounge, private desk, lounge for employees, ada restroom, loft Programs Used: Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator The goal of this project was to create a design studio for a classmate. My client, Natalie, loves an overall open and airy feeling in her workplace and requested a modern aesthetic complete with neutral colors, natural light, wood tones, white walls, and lots of plants. I had to incorporate her custom textile that was inspired by latte art in a useful way while creating a productive studio environment. The space conveys a very bright and open aesthetic, which helps create a more productive workplace. Access to natural sunlight and light colors promotes wellness, which is heavily used in this design. They sell handmade cobalt pottery that evoke a sense of tranquility and beauty. The handmade qualities are unmatched. This company values heritage and tradition, so I used natural materials and traditional forms to complement the beautiful pottery.

Residential Design
Autism Design Location: Boston, MA Discipline: residential design Concept: chameleon Programming: family zones, child’s bedroom, sensory room, parent zone, areas of refuge Programs Used: Sketchup, Photoshop, watercolor, marker This residential project was designed as home for a family with a young daughter who has autismspectrum disorder. She requires private spaces to escape and feel safe, while also having easy access to areas for sensory stimulation. The sensory room is designed to provide full sensory stimulation by using vibrant colors and lights, a ball pit, swing chair, and a desk for creativity. The home is designed to have access to “escape” areas throughout for the child to feel comfortable when overwhelmed. The concept of a chameleon is very applicable to this client. The smooth lines and flowing movement of a chameleon’s form coincide with the need for peace and calmness. Its adaptability to its environment also embodies the child’s need for flexibility. Sensory room - A swing chair allows for physical stimulation in an enclosed, safe space. Several activities are available such as sparkling sensory bottoles, a balance ball chair, ball pit, rock wall, and color changing wall - these are all stimulating activities available in an open environment, creating a safe zone for the child.
Private sensory room This is a relaxing, dark nook that is accessed through a small childsize crawl space off of the sensory room. This room is for when the child is overstimulated while completing sensory activities and is a safe zone for rest and comfort. Cool colors, soft cushions, prospect and refuge qualities, and color changing bubble tubes contribute to this relaxing nook.
Creative Projects
Textile Design Programs Used: Illustrator, Photoshop In my Electronic Media class, we explored a field related to interior design by designing custom textiles using Adobe Illustrator. I chose to design my textile on the style of famous art-deco French illustrator Georges Barbier. He is known for his depiction of women in the early 1900s in very feminine and flirty settings and uses rather delicate and flamboyant linework. Each of illustrations evokes a dramatic sense of playfulness, exoticism, and elegance that is so unique to his illustration style.

To convey the feeling of Barbier’s work, I created a pattern that has a very flowing movement and is made up of a detailed pattern within the linework. The pattern has a sense of nature as well and feels as though it would fit into the time period of Barbier’s work. Floral Design Through my work as a floral and event designer at Intuition Events, I have gained a large amount of knowledge in the creative field of floral design. I love to select unique varieties of flowers and greens that complement the client’s wishes. My favorite designs utilize various textures, rich colors, and ethereal forms. I had the opportunity to take on my own client recently and design her florals from start to finish. She is a very down-to-earth woman and adores everything vintage and natural, so I decided to use a mix of colorful wildflowers and greens to create a beautiful medley of textures and colors. The venue was a primitive farm filled with antiques and charm. Event decor included vintage sofas, colorful handkerchiefs, and a lot of lace to complete the look. Floral design is something that I directly relate to interior design as they both create beautiful objects to be enjoyed by people of all backgrounds.
