S

tepping into the modeling world at the age of 17 was not to become famous but to start my career. Being a South Asian woman, I felt like it’s my job to be completely original in the International market. To become what young women like Lakshmi Menon and Yasmeen Ghauri have represented in the modeling world on International level. My Journey: Growing up, I was the tallest kid in my class and always felt like I didn’t belong. It wasn’t until I was 13 that I started to think about modeling, thanks to my English literature teacher saying, “You will be a model and you will never finish High school.” One thing I knew for sure however was that I wanted to complete my education. Upon graduation from High school, I started “CSI CUNY” and today I am in my third year, studying a double major in Marketing and International Markets. Along with post secondary, I got my start in modeling through a charity event in New York, where I was spotted by TVOne Global team

me and built my confidence, and that is why I was able to give my best when I stepped onto the New York Fashion week 2010 (spring collections) catwalk, opening for all the Fashion Designers from Spain. I am also involved in charity work with the Hope Show 2010 for the flood victims in Pakistan. The event was a success and almost all the top fashion designers, along with the South Asian community, came together to work hard and help the flood victims Since becoming a Marketing and International Business student, I wanted to work in the field to gain valuable experience. I was lucky enough to work at Lord & Tylor, Brand Rep for BCBG, Maxazria and French Connection in 2009 during my fall college semester. In the spring semester of 2010, I went to work with the team of the world’s biggest department

and I was chosen to work with Soundview Broadcasting and the incredible teams that make up their South Asian T.V. channels. I also had the pleasure of working with T.V.Asia, AVS, Geo-T.V., and ARY-T.V. Fortunately, I am blessed to be fluent in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, English and Spanish which enabled me to work in several exciting projects. I have worked with Ritu Kumar, HSY (Dubai Fashion Week), Umar Sayeed, Andres Aquino (New York Fashion Week) and many more… Andres Aquino (producer of New York’s only High Class Couture Fashion Week) said, “Just because your Mom, Dad or family say you could be a model, doesn’t mean you can be a model. It’s what you bring into the modeling world is what makes you one. ” These are the words that inspired

stores Macy’s, Ralph Lauren, INC Collection and Tommy Hilfiger. Everything is always so busy busy... and I am always on the run but of course I love it. My college and modeling are a big part of my life. I believe life is about playing different roles and creating a balance between them. There is a lot more to be done and I have just started my journey. NOV. / DEC. 2010 15

eena’s artistic ventures began at a very young age. Her junior high History and English projects were frequently selected for school Art exhibitions. “People always looked at my long, skinny fingers and said I’d be an artist when I grew older”, Reena jokes. Sure enough, her painting work expanded into the realm of acrylic and mixed media, and her exhibitions grew out of her junior high school gym and into highly revered venues including the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). 38 NOV. / DEC 2010

design experience, and in addition to BlackBerry, has designed for CGI Group, Bell Canada, Rogers, and Ontario Power Generation. Visual design isn’t the only artistic outlet for Reena. She is also a distinguished actor. Her first role? “I played baby Pinky Khanna in the 1983 Bollywood flick Door-Desh with Shashi Kapoor”, Reena laughs. “Does that count?” As a child actor, Reena worked on both films and commercials. But somewhere along the way she became really shy. “I would hide behind my mother everywhere she took me!” u NOV. / DEC. 2010 39

Reena graduated with a specialization in Computer Science from the University of Toronto. “My university years marked the expansion of my artistic expression into the digital realm”, says Reena. As her interest in technology grew, her art followed with her. Reena began experimenting with graphic and web design early into high school. Today, Reena manages the BlackBerry Platform Design team at Research In Motion. She spearheads the design of BlackBerry mobile, desktop and internet applications. She has over 10 years of

She has been featured in publications such as the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, and Metro News as well as on MuchMusic. What does she like to do when she’s not busy at work? “To be honest, work really doesn’t feel like work at all when you love it so much.” She does enjoy bike riding and reading when she’s got free time though. “I recently biked from Los Angeles to San Francisco – that was quite the adventure.” Reena also loves to relieve her stress with some boxing every now and then. Dance and acting training broke her out that bubble fairly quickly though. Professionally trained in dance by Mumbai based Bollywood Dance Director Shyam Mithaiwala and in acting by Toronto’s Fulcher Agency, Reena no longer hesitates to jump in front of a crowd. International Wedding & Lifestyle Photographer y landscape design professor and my best friend played key roles in my becoming a photographer. Three years ago, while I was in one of my Landscape Design classes, I was approached by my Professor who asked if I would be interested in taking pictures for his business. It seemed surreal at the time, as I never thought my stills were professional; in fact I didn’t even own or know how to operate an SLR camera. I have always loved taking pictures and during my Landscape Design Program, I would always have my little Point and Shoot camera with me. That ended up being my first paid gig! I used the funds I was

making in photography to buy myself my first Digital SLR Camera. After completing the program and moving on to a profession in Finance, (The plan was to take the Landscape Design Program as a detour on my journey to becoming a finance guru!) I often mentioned to friends how I thoroughly enjoyed taking photographs of landscapes and experimented with various techniques. One day, my best friend asked me to photograph her engagement party. I reminded her how I was more familiar capturing plants and not people, yet she insisted and had full faith in my craft. Due to her confidence in me, I took the plunge…and the rest is history! I started receiving inquiries from across the globe whether I could photograph their weddings. I had no idea how to respond…but one thing I knew for sure was that I needed to have an established platform if I wanted to pursue this on a more professional level. Subsequently I constructed a website, followed by a blog and that’s how Amna Hakim Photography came into existence. What sets me apart from others is not only my technique of using Natural Light in my work but also my professionalism and my attitude. November 1st marks my one year anniversary as a Full-Time Weddings and Lifestyle Photographer. I’ve been fortunate to shoot weddings in Florida, New York, Toronto, Montreal and Pakistan. I’ve also been lucky enough to have a few celebrity collaborations. I hope to achieve more success in the future and all this would not have been possible without the support of my family, friends and all of you!

Playing to sold out audiences since then, The Toronto Tabla Ensemble as an influential voice in Canadian music, brings together the North Indian percussive tradition of Tabla, with some of Canada’s best music and dance groups. Staying true to form, content and feeling, the TTE moves what is traditionally a solo instrument to an unparalleled level of ensemble work. The intricate rhythms and abundant tonal variations possible on the tabla combine to make it one of the most expressive of all percussion instruments. Add to this the versatility of mallets, percussion, voice, bass and dance, and you have what the Ensemble is all about. The Ensemble has maintained a

strong home season presence in Toronto, since 1991, and has toured Canada six times, performing at all of Canada’s best folk, jazz and art festivals. In 2006 they toured Australia with Jeff Martin’s (formerly of the Tea Party) solo project. The TTE have appeared nationally and internationally on Bravo!, CBC News World and Much Music. Their original music has been used in numerous films and commercials, and in 2003 the TTE was commissioned to create the current theme music for the CBC RADIO 1’s daily morning show Metro Morning. The M-DO Toronto Tabla Ensemble Center for World Music is located at 335 College Street in the heart of Kensington Market. This incredibly talented artist is known for experimenting with different styles of songs and constantly pushing the boundaries of Indian music – it’s no wonder he’s been honored as one of TIME’s World’s Most Influential People and is one of the world’s top selling recording artists of all time. Krystal Kiran Garib, as one of the key cast of Rahman’s Jai Ho: The Journey Home world tour, performed Rahman’s

compositions from films such as Slumdog Millionaire, Couples Retreat, Guru, and Rahman’s 1992 breakout hit Roja at 7 stadium shows to date, reaching audiences of over 1.5 million. The songs performed during Jai Ho:The Journey Home were influenced by hip-hop, rock, reggae and pop, as well as traditional Indian music, and were played with a variety of interesting instruments including a keytar and sitar, alongside the more common piano, keyboard and drums. Though obviously talented in all genres of music, it was Rahman’s older, more traditional songs that the audience went wild over, and that really demonstrated his strengths as an artist. DENTIST

Sensitivity A chilling reminder, Is it time for my appointment?

W

e all have our reservations with Dental procedures and treatment, but we also know we have to keep on our semiannual visits or get used to the constant nagging of the Dental Hygienists and the Dentists, well if we don’t then we obviously have to deal with the negative impact for our teeth. During the course of our chewing years we have experienced some type of sensitivity when we go to bite on those candy bars or sip on that iced - coffee, and then we wonder are we ever going to be able to eat and drink our daily cravings and what’s going on with our teeth,

90 NOV. / DEC. 2010

but what does one have to or can do? According to the Academy of General Dentistry, roughly 45 million Americans experience tooth sensitivity. The pain associated with tooth sensitivity may occur constantly or intermittently. If you have constant ache, it could be a sign of a more serious problem. There can be a number of reasons for sensitivity, with our possible hard brushing, acidic foods in diet and age, the enamel wears down which also doesn’t help our cause. Keep in mind that teeth grinding and whitening is something we have covered in our previous articles have been known to contribute to sensitivity. Getting

orthodontic treatment where we move the teeth can also result in recession and exposure of the dentin. Sometimes just routine dental work can result with sensitivity, which is not alarming as this type of reaction is normal and should go away within a few weeks, which means the tooth nerve is recovering from the procedure. Remember sometimes teeth simply need time to recover from the trauma. It’s when the pressure sensitivity is persistent that you should suspect something like a crack, or decayed tooth and should see your dentist. So a question one may probably encounter is how the tooth can be sensitive even though one may not be in constant pain? Beneath the enamel lies, fluid-filled channels called dentinal tubules. These tubules lead directly into the tooth’s pulp and hence the tooth’s sensitive nerve. Whatever the cause, once the tubules are exposed extreme

ABOUT

Avoiding acidic juices and foods also helps minimize the risk of erosion. The risk of sensitivity from whitening procedures and dental therapy can be controlled by use of fluoridated toothpastes, desensitizer, gels and mouth rinses. Finally using high concentration fluoride prescription toothpastes from your dentist can help arming you to be prepared for sensitivity and also helps control the damage it can cause by repeated fluid movements to the pulp. For repeated grinders, use of a mouth guard will also help control the wear and tear on your teeth and enamel. All In all your dentist would be the best resource to identify the reason for the sensitivity and find you a suitable treatment plan that can control and prevent the progression. So before those chills get out of hand get checked and also check your oral habits!

changes in temperature cause fluids inside to flow back and forth quickly and that causes the sensitivity. Now that we know what can be a possible cause and how it happens we probably also need to look into what can we do about it. There are a few things we can do, like using a soft bristle tooth brush when brushing, using less pressure and following the correct circular technique when we are brushing as we don’t want to contribute to the enamel wear. It is very important that we try to be gentle when brushing and if we cannot control the amount of pressure we exert we may need to invest in an electric rotary toothbrush as the pressure applied on teeth will stay controlled. Proper brushing will also help prevent receding gums.

10 Reasons to practice Yoga 1. STRESS RELIEF: Yoga reduces the physical effects of stress on the body. By encouraging relaxation, yoga helps to lower the levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Related benefits include lowering blood pressure and heart rate, improving digestion and boosting the immune system as well as easing symptoms of conditions such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, asthma and insomnia.

3. BETTER BREATHING:Yoga teaches people to take slower, deeper breaths. This helps to improve lung function, trigger the body’s relaxation response and increase the amount of oxygen available to the body. 4. FLEXIBILITY: Yoga helps to improve flexibility and mobility, increasing range of movement and reducing aches and pains. Many people can’t touch their toes during their first yoga class. Gradually they begin to use the correct muscles. Over time, the ligaments, tendons and muscles lengthen, increasing elasticity, making more poses possible. 92 NOV. / DEC. 2010

Yoga also helps to improve body alignment resulting in better posture and helping to relieve back, neck, joint and muscle problems. 5. INCREASED STRENGTH:Yoga asanas (postures) use every muscle in the body, helping to increase strength literally from head to toe. And, while these postures strengthen the body, they also provide an additional benefit of helping to relieve muscular tension. 6. WEIGHT MANAGEMENT:Yoga (even less vigorous styles) can aid weight control efforts by reducing the cortisol levels as well as by burning excess calories and reducing stress. Yoga also encourages healthy eating habits and provides a heightened sense of well-being and self-esteem. 7. IMPROVED CIRCULATION: Yoga helps to improve circulation and, as a result of various poses, more efficiently moves oxygenated blood to the body’s cells.

8. CARDIOVASCULAR CONDITIONING: Even gentle yoga practice can provide cardiovascular benefits by lowering resting heart rate, increasing endurance and improving oxygen uptake during exercise. 9. FOCUS ON THE PRESENT:Yoga helps us to focus on the present, to become more aware and to help create mind body health. It opens the way to improved concentration, coordination, reaction time and memory. 10. INNER PEACE: The meditative aspects of yoga help many to reach a deeper, more spiritual and more satisfying place in their lives. Many who begin to practice for other reasons have reported this to be a key reason that yoga has become an essential part of their daily lives. 2. PAIN RELIEF:Yoga can ease pain. Studies have demonstrated that practicing yoga asanas (postures), meditation or a combination of the two, reduced pain for people with conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, auto-immune diseases and hypertension as well as arthritis, back and neck pain, and other chronic conditions. Some practitioners report that even emotional pain can be eased through the practice of yoga.

oth Oakville & Milton and the surrounding areas get a lot of visitors this time of the year with people coming to enjoy the fall colors, attend one of our many harvest celebrations or the last of the open air farmer’s markets, so as a result, it’s a great time for them to consider looking at homes for sale in the area. In October & November there may not be as many homes on the market, but sellers do tend to be more motivated and willing to negotiate and buyers have less competition. Selling a home at this time certainly comes with one advantage as beautiful foliage can automatically make a property more attractive for showings. Sellers still need to do their part to keep a property looking its best as the trees shed their leaves and it becomes more and more exposed, making its exterior appearance especially important. INDIGO CHAIN BORDER BEDDING Feather-soft bedding made from organically grown cotton and natural indigo dyes is so rare it qualifies as a collector's item. Using that all-but-extinct vegetable dye - today, almost all indigo is synthetic - a cooperative of 50 artisans in remote northwest India hand-makes our collection. Drawing inspiration from local mandanas, decorative wall art inspired by the region's flora and fauna, the craftsmen and women fashion the bedding's border pattern to resemble linked old coins. This work furnishes critical income in an area long devastated by drought and plagued by acute poverty. Fair Trade Certified.

HAND-BEADED BOUQUET BAG Maybe it's the richly colored, intricately textured handwork that infatuates us. Or it could be the dance of the bold bouquet of puffy woolen flowers with beading. Whatever the reason, we confess that we're crazy for this bag. Handcrafted by tribal women in remote Nepal.

HAND-BLOCKED FLORAL TABLECLOTH & NAPKINS To create these exquisite organic cotton tablecloth and napkins, artisans in India carve intricate floral designs into a woodblock, dip the block into vegetable dyes and then repeatedly hand-print one color at a time. While the process is demanding, no other method produces the same richness of color or rivals the delicacy of the design. We offer a jewel-tone motif to coordinate with your holiday table settings. Paisley teardrops border the tablecloth, and a plain field borders the napkins.
