APRIL 2014

Pastor's Article for April 2014 I give up. I am giving up my own search for comfort and ease during Lent. The things that provide for comfort, though they are something I often look at as just the things that make for a life, really give me more than I need. And because there is more than I need in some areas of my life, there is less of me in other areas. In the interest of full disclosure I pause here and let you know that I am not giving up ALL comfort. I am still eating chocolate (O, how I love chocolate!). I am still going to movies (The Muppet Movie's opening scene made me cry for remembering Sunday nights in the Stultz household when we would all gather around the TV to hear the opening song, "It's time to play the music. It's time to light the lights. It's time to meet the Muppets on the Muppet Show tonight.") I'm still eating red meat (Five Guys burgers...need I say more!?) But I am giving up the comfort of my sloth. I've taken up running again...again. Why do we give up something - a practice called fasting - during the liturgical season of Lent? In the early church those who were coming for Baptism at Easter prepared themselves for the celebration by fasting - an echo of Jesus' time in the wilderness. Jesus doesn't require his followers to fast but the scriptures reveal that he does recognize 'giving up' as a common practice. Matthew 6:16 says "when you fast‌" rather than "if you fast‌" Fasting had a purpose for Jesus. Intentionally entering the wilderness laid the groundwork for a major change in Jesus' life - the beginning of a ministry that would change the face of history. Giving up is about change - lasting change, loving change, life-giving change. When Jesus invites us to give something up it is in order to set us free to follow a new direction. We 'give up' so that we can be radically changed and in turn change the world by his grace. As you 'give up' I will be praying that God is working change in you that prepares you to celebrate the Spirit of life-giving change at work each day in the name of Jesus Christ. Pastor Cara PS. Join me as I 'give up." Each Friday at 4PM and Saturday at 8AM I will be preparing for the Run to the Resurrection. Meet me in the Gathering Area. We will read a Scripture which will set our intention for reflection as we run. We will run/walk for about 30 minutes and return having joined Jesus in changing our hearts, community and world!

Flipping the Script with Zacchaeus Every night before bed we go through a similar routine with our kids. We have them get in their pajamas, brush their teeth, and then we choose a book and Bible story to read to them. These are usually the typical light-hearted Bible stories but the other night while reading to my daughter a thought crossed my mind about a familiar Bible Story. Whenever I read to my daughter (and give her a choice about the Bible Story) she chooses the same one because she knows that daddy has a song that goes with it. The story she loves is about Zacchaeus, you know the little tax collector who couldn’t see Jesus so he climbed up a sycamore-fig tree to see Him. Many of us know this story very well but what struck me the other night wasn’t something that you would think would. Read the full story at http://faithumc-refuge.tumblr.com/ As I thought about this in my own life, I began to become grateful that Jesus doesn’t treat us as others think we should be sometimes. There are numerous times that I am sure others would want to see me judged or treated poorly, but Jesus accepts me with loving and open arms. I also found myself thinking about the times that I felt the need to try to “get my life in order” before coming to God. I recalled the struggle of those moments, only to realize later that Jesus loved me for who I am now, not what I could be in the future. Jesus demonstrated this compassion and loved when he flipped Zacchaeus’ life by not judging him but simply loving him. Today, I would like to leave you with a question to discuss with your students. “When do you feel like God is judging you?” As you wrestle with this question I challenge you to think about a time that you felt like you were “judged” by God or maybe that you wanted God to “judge” someone else. How did that make you feel in the moment? How did God respond to that situation in your life, with judgment or love? As we reflect upon these situations in your life remember that, “Jesus wants to love you, not judge you.”

“2020 Vision Team” The Church Board has commissioned the 2020 Vision Team to plan ahead for Faith Church. The team, led by Frank Meister, will identify the visions of our mission teams, ministries, and congregants through the year 2020. We believe that working together to realize our collective visions will continually build greater vitality and spiritual growth. Once we’ve developed our long-term vision, the team will make plans to support these visions, marshaling the resources needed to support a stronger and more vital Faith Church. The 2020 Vision team will need the help of every ministry team and each member to lay out our plans for the future of the church, and continued support during the next six years to continually renew and augment the original plans. The objectives and commitments of the 2020 Vision Team are: 1.Work with the ministry team leaders and congregation to facilitate a process for achieving their vision and summarize the required financial, human, facility and other resources. 2.Consolidate, clarify, coordinate and communicate the collective and comprehensive long-term vision of the ministry teams, congregation, and staff. 3.Present its findings to the Board and church body for discernment, discussion, and prioritization. 4.Commission a team to identify resource “gaps” and develop a funding plan. 5.Establish a process to track and report implementation progress.

Come-Union

New Communion Experience on the First Sunday of Each Month

Come-Union is an extension of Communion and will be offered at the end of the worship service on Communion Sunday. By tradition, Faith United Methodist Church celebrates Communion (The Lord’s Supper) as a congregation on the first Sunday of each month. Since September, we have been intentional about providing opportunity for children and youth to participate in Communion during worship. Children grow spiritually by participating in the life of the church and this includes Communion. When children share in the meal of the Lord’s Supper they discover they have a place where they can experience God’s unconditional love and belonging in our community of faith; their faith family. Faith UMC has a value for creating opportunities for children and families to experience Christ and explore their faith questions. It is our hope that Come-Union will be such an experience for our church family. Come-Union is an opportunity for Pastors Steve and Cara to spend a few moments with you and your children to answer questions you or they may have about the sacrament of Communion. By tradition, any leftover elements of bread and juice are to be returned to the earth or consumed in a reverent manner following worship. After the Hymn of Mission the children will be invited to come stand with the pastor during the Benediction. All who are remaining for Come-Union will then be seated during the Postlude or closing Praise Chorus. We will consume any remaining Communion elements. This is a tangible and symbolic way to experience the abundance of God’s grace as it overflows from the Lord’s Table.

East Ohio Summer Camps - Scholarships Available!

Faith’s Women’s Retreat & PAL Mission On the weekend of March 7 & 8, over 20 women and leaders gathered for Faith’s Women’s Retreat. During the weekend, Andrea Lewis, Community Housing Specialist for PAL (Partners in Adult Living) shared about how PAL is in ministry to support homeless young adults in Stark County. Moved and inspired as Andrea spoke about the needs of homeless young adults in our community, the women attending the retreat felt led to participate in mission with PAL beyond the collection of bath towels and personal care items for the young adults served by PAL. On Monday, April 14, we will serve dinner to PAL program participants and provide each of the young adults an Easter Bag with personal care items and gift cards. One of the most needed items are gift cards to local grocery stores and area fast food restaurants. We would like to provide 15 grocery gift cards and 15 restaurant gift cards to the young adults participating in PAL’s program. If you would like to join the Women’s Retreat participants in supporting PAL’s mission we welcome monetary donations. For more information please contact Cheryl Froelich, Karen Vandervaart, Teresa Purses, or Kathy Schmucker.
