Everyone desires lasting joy and peace. Many times, we attempt to discover joy in things that do not last or in false perceptions of peace. It is by consciously preparing to receive the sacraments that we truly discover God’s voice and direction, especially when faced with the question, “How do I conform my will to God’s will?” When Christ instituted the sacraments, He did so in order that we might stay united with God in our life-long pilgrimage toward heaven. The beauty of the sacraments is that they help our spiritual life work alongside every stage of our natural life: at birth through baptism, in our human development though Communion and confirmation, in times of healing through reconciliation, in living out our vocation through matrimony or holy orders, and in times of illness through the anointing of the sick. The purpose of the sacraments relates to what God desires for every one of us: our sanctification. Sanctity implies that our number one vocation is to become holy, as the Father is holy. Becoming so requires our cooperation with God’s grace, which takes the full use of our intellect and reason to nourish and strengthen our faith, becoming witness to it. When you are baptized you are bestowed with sanctifying grace, which draws you to what is holy. Holiness provides us with immense joy and peace, beyond anything we can imagine on earth, and this is because we are created in the image of God and we are destined for heaven. My brothers and sisters in Christ, God’s will is for you to come to know what is good, to grow in virtue and be with him in eternal glory. Place all your trust and love in him and all things will come thereafter. The sacraments are the sacred encounters with God that lead us to conform our will to God’s will, Todo
Todos deseamos tener alegría y paz duraderas. En muchas ocasiones, intentamos descubrir la alegría en cosas que no duran, o en falsas pretensiones de paz. Es al estar preparados conscientemente para recibir los sacramentos que descubrimos en verdad la voz de Dios que nos dirige, sobre todo cuando tenemos que afrontar esta pregunta: “¿Cómo conformo mi voluntad a la voluntad de Dios?” Cuando Jesucristo instituyó los sacramentos, lo hizo para que pudiéramos permanecer unidos con Dios en nuestro peregrinaje de toda una vida hacia el cielo. Lo hermoso de los sacramentos es que nos ayudan en nuestro desarrollo espiritual, a lo largo de las etapas de nuestra vida natural: al nacer por medio del bautismo, en nuestro desarrollo humano por medio de la Comunión y la confirmación, en momentos de sanación por medio de la reconciliación, al vivir nuestra vocación por medio del matrimonio o orden sacerdotal, y en la enfermedad por medio de la unción de los enfermos. El propósito de los sacramentos se relaciona con lo que Dios desea para cada uno de nosotros: que seamos santos. La santidad implica que nuestra primordial vocación es ser santos, como el Padre es santo. Para lograrlo se requiere de nuestra cooperación con la gracia de Dios, lo cual se lleva todo nuestro intelecto y razonamiento para poder nutrir y fortalecer nuestra fe, dando testimonio de ella. Al momento de ser ustedes bautizados se les otorga una gracia santificadora, que los atrae a todo lo que es santo. La santidad nos llena de una inmensa alegría y paz, más allá de lo que nos podamos imaginar en la tierra, pues hemos sido creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios, y nuestro destino es el cielo. Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, la voluntad de Dios es que ustedes lleguen a conocer lo que es bueno, que crezcan en la virtud y que estén con Él en la gloria eterna. Pongan toda su confianza y amor en Él y todo lo demás vendrá por añadidura. Los sacramentos son sagrados encuentros con Dios que nos llevan a conformar nuestra voluntad a la voluntad de Dios, Todo Con Amor.

1. Pregunta qué necesitan. Pregunta qué tipo de apoyo les gustaría, si las hay. Puede que no estén listos. No te adelantes; primero pregunta en que los puedes ayudar. 2. E star presente en oración. A veces el mejor apoyo viene a través de la oración y solo la oración. Si tus amigos no están pidiendo tus sugerencias, puede hacer más daño darles tu opinión. Sé un oído atento sin convertirte en un portavoz poco aconsejable. Ora para que el Espíritu Santo te dé las palabras cuando tus amigos tengan corazones listos para escuchar. 3. No confíe en los tópicos religiosos al dar consejos. Si son cristianos, están más que familiarizados con 1 Corintios 13: el amor es paciente, el amor es amable ... Cuando los corazones y las almas sufren y son vulnerables, este tipo de “recordatorio” puede sonar como un juicio. Pero puedes y debes alentar a la pareja a encontrar consuelo y guía en las Escrituras. 4. Fomenta una conversación con su sacerdote o pastor. Nos gusta creer que conocemos la mejor manera de manejar las cosas, cuando estamos fuera del problema. Sin embargo, cada relación es diferente y es difícil no proyectar nuestros propios desafíos sobre los de alguien más. Esta es la razón por la cual un sacerdote o pastor es generalmente la mejor respuesta.
1. Ask what they need. Ask what kind of support they’d like – if any. They may not be ready. Don’t jump in before asking where they need you. 2. Be prayerfully present. Sometimes the best support comes through prayer and prayer alone. If your friends are not asking for your suggestions, it may do more harm to give them your two cents. Be a listening ear without becoming an ill-advised mouthpiece. Pray that the Holy Spirit gives you the words when your friends have hearts ready to hear. 3. Don’t rely on religious platitudes when giving advice. If they are Christians, they are more than familiar with 1 Corinthians 13 – Love is patient, love is kind … When hearts and souls are hurting and vulnerable, this type of “reminder” can sound the same as judgment. But you can and should encourage the couple to find comfort and guidance in Scripture. 4. Encourage a conversation with their priest or pastor. We like to believe we know the best way to handle things – when we are on the outside of the issue. However, each relationship is different and it’s hard not to project our own challenges onto someone else’s. This is why a priest or pastor is usually the best sounding board.

BECAUSE WE CATHOLICS WHAT DO ARE REQUIRED THEY DO? to attend Mass every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation (yes, Jack, that’s every), we may fall into the trap of viewing it as some sort of chore that needs to be checked off a list before the “fun” part of Sunday can begin. It sounds as if that is where Jack is coming from, so perhaps it would help him to adjust his thought process a little and see if that helps him change his attitude toward Sundays. The Church calls the Eucharist the “source and summit of the Church’s life.” It is our privilege to be able to gather to thank God (perhaps for that beautiful spring day, our spouse, our children), and to receive Christ in the reality of his body and blood. What better way to start a day? Also, we have a tendency to think of our salvation as something that’s between us and God. But the reality is that each individual is part of the body of Christ – we are saved as a whole, not in parts. We are in this together. If Jack comes to appreciate the beauty of the Mass, I think he’ll be happy to attend with his family. In order to do that, and also enjoy the beauty of the day, Jack and Kim may want to talk about whether a different Mass time may work for them. When it comes to vacation, we don’t take a vacation from God. Most places we travel are reasonably close to a Catholic church, and it’s not too burdensome to work it into the schedule.

Parece que eso es la manera de pensar de Juan, así que quizás le ayudaría a ajustar un poco su proceso de pensamiento y ver si eso le ayuda a cambiar su actitud hacia los domingos. La Iglesia llama a la Eucaristía la “fuente y cumbre de la vida de la Iglesia”. Es nuestro privilegio poder reunirnos para agradecer a Dios (quizás por ese hermoso día de primavera, por nuestro conyugue, nuestros hijos), y recibir a Cristo en la realidad de su cuerpo y sangre. ¿Qué mejor manera de empezar un día? Además, tenemos una tendencia a pensar en nuestra salvación como algo que está entre nosotros y Dios. Pero la realidad es que cada individuo es parte del cuerpo de Cristo; somos salvos en su totalidad, no en partes. Estamos en esto juntos. Si Juan llega a apreciar la belleza de la misa, creo que estará encantado de asistir con su familia. Para hacer eso, y también para disfrutar de la belleza del día, es posible que Juan y Carmen quieran hablar sobre si una misa de diferente tiempo puede funcionar para ellos. Cuando se trata de vacaciones, no tomamos vacaciones de Dios. La mayoría de los lugares a los que viajamos están razonablemente cerca de una iglesia católica, y no es demasiado oneroso incluirlos en el calendario. 7

HOW CAN WE BETTER OBSERVE LENT AND CELEBRATE EASTER AS A FAMILY? uring Lent and followed by the Easter season, it’s important to focus on how Christ’s death and resurrection offer us a chance at eternal life in heaven. In talking to your child(ren) about how Jesus suffered and died for us, sacrifices and almsgiving will have greater meaning for him/her, likely resulting in a deeper relationship with Christ.
D
LENTEN SACRIFICES AND FASTING Last year, our seven-year-old said she was going to give up pizza for Lent. Finding this challenging, she quickly changed her sacrifice to giving up only the crust. She changed her sacrifice about ten times by the end of Lent. Kids may find Lenten sacrifices hard, so encourage your child to give up one small thing each day. Consider making sacrifices as a family, such as turning off electronics to enjoy quality time together, and begin this time with prayer to maintain a greater focus on Lent. ALMSGIVING Involve your kid(s) in donating toys and/or clothing during Lent, explaining that by this action, they are helping someone in need. Discuss with older kids how Christ gave all He had for us and how they can strive to follow his example.
THE PASCHAL TRIDUUM Meditating and praying the Stations of the Cross each Friday during Lent, or at least on Good Friday, is powerful for both kids and adults. Through praying the stations, we can offer reparation for our sins and those of the world. Participating in the triduum as much as possible may include going to Mass on Holy Thursday, the Passion service on Good Friday, celebrating the vigil of Holy Saturday, and Easter Mass. EASTER Continue to live out the liturgical season through the 50 days of Easter with joy, incorporating fun traditions. We like to bake “Resurrection rolls” (found on page 24), which symbolize how Christ rose from the dead, leaving the tomb empty. When you help your kids to understand the beauty of Lenten sacrifices and almsgiving, you create a period of transformation within your family resulting in a deep and lasting connection with our Lord.
¿CÓMO PODEMOS OBSERVAR MEJOR LA Y CELEBRAR LA PASCUA COMO UNA FAMILIA? urante la Cuaresma que está por comenzar, y después en el tiempo de Pascua, es importante que nos enfoquemos en cómo la muerte y la resurrección de Jesucristo nos ofrece una oportunidad para gozar de la vida eterna en el cielo. Padres de familia, al hablar con sus hijos sobre la muerte y resurrección de Cristo, las promesas de sacrificios y ofrendas que hagan tendrán un mayor significado, lo que con toda seguridad propiciará una relación más profunda con Él.

SACRIFICIOS DE CUARESMA Y AYUNO El año pasado, nuestra pequeña de siete años decidió que iba a dejar de comer pizza como sacrificio durante la cuaresma. Cuando notó que se le hacía demasiado difícil, rápidamente cambió su promesa a dejar de comer solamente la orilla de la pizza. Para cuando terminó la cuaresma, ya había cambiado su sacrificio unas diez veces. A los niños se les dificulta cumplir con una promesa a largo plazo, por lo que es mejor animarlos a que hagan un pequeño sacrificio cada día. Consideremos hacer promesas y sacrificios como familia, por ejemplo, apagando los aparatos electrónicos para poder disfrutar de un tiempo juntos, y comenzar ese momento en familia con una oración y así tener un mejor enfoque en la cuaresma. OFRENDAS Y LIMOSNAS Animen a sus hijos a donar juguetes y/o ropa durante la cuaresma, explicándoles que con eso ayudan a alguien necesitado. Con los hijos mayorcitos, platiquen sobre cómo Cristo dio todo lo que tenía por nosotros, y las maneras en que ellos pueden seguir su ejemplo. 8

EL TRIDUO PASCUAL Meditar y rezar el Viacrucis cada viernes durante la cuaresma, o por lo menos en el Viernes Santo, es algo poderoso tanto para los niños como para los adultos. Por medio del Viacrucis podemos ofrecer reparación por nuestros pecados y los pecados del mundo. El problema en muchos salones de catecismo, sin embargo, es una falta de interés en asistir a clase para aprender acerca del sacramento de la confirmación. The sacrament of confirmation imparts on us a twofold strength to become holy and greater witnesses of the Gospel, thus completing our full initiation into the Catholic Church that started at baptism. This special strength, symbolized by the sacramental seal set on us through the holy chrism oil put on our foreheads on the day of confirmation, incorporates us into the Church’s mission to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth. The confirmed Catholic is empowered to bear witness to the Gospel teachings. The trouble in many classrooms, however, is a disinterest in attending class to learn about the sacrament of confirmation and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Teenagers and adults often show an attitude of obligation toward formation to the sacrament see it only as “I have to” rather than “I want to” in preparing for confirmation. The sacrament of confirmation brings us into a personal walk of faith and a lifetime adventure as a faithful disciple of Jesus. If only we realized the opportunity we have! It is good to recall that the sacrament of confirmation is a call to spiritual maturity. Just as parents teach their child what is needed to grow up, a catechist teaches that God also calls us to grow up in our faith. Remind your students that God helps them to grow up by giving them a sacramental encounter with him through confirmation. This sacrament calls us to spiritual maturity by living Christ’s teachings in word and deed.

ADVOCACY DAY: A VOICE FOR THE CHURCH BY BENJAMIN DE LA GARZA AND JENNIFER ALLMON
On Tuesday, March 26, 2019, representatives from the Diocese of Laredo join as many as 1,600 adults and 1,300 students from around Texas to attend Advocacy Day at the Texas State Capitol in Austin, Texas. Diocesan representatives will meet with legislative staff and lawmakers to discuss the bishops’ legislative concerns regarding issues that affect the life and dignity of the people of Texas. WHY WE ADVOCATE: Our baptismal call is to follow and bear witness to Christ in all we do. Participation in the political process is a moral obligation. Every Christian can be an advocate by praying, and calling or writing his or her state legislature, attending rallies and following up with state representatives.
WHAT HAPPENS ON ADVOCACY DAY: Activities include the celebration of the Mass, a rally and prayer on the south steps of the capitol, public hearings, legislative visits, and student activities. A legislative visit entails scheduling meetings with legislators and diocesan Advocacy Day coordinators. In teams of 3-5, Catholics have an opportunity to meet with at least three legislative officials. Discussion focuses on one specific bill on the 2019 legislative agenda. This is an opportunity to educate, inform and bear witness to our Church’s teachings for the common good of all people in the state of Texas. MY EMPLOYER WON’T LET ME TAKE GOOD FRIDAY OFF Q
I want to take time off for Good Friday, and my employer won’t let me. Don’t I have the
right to do this under my freedom to practice my religion? Only if your company has more than 15 employees. If so, you’re in luck (or rather in Providence). By law, companies must make reasonable accommodation for employees’ observance of religious holidays. If your company grants a certain number of paid personal days, you might choose that option for your Good Friday observance. If it doesn’t, your sole payback will be eternal. Not a bad deal.

While the law protects your right, it can be challenged. Would your absence on Good Friday cause an undue or severe hardship for your employer? For instance, might it have a damaging impact on the operation of the business, cause significant stress for other employees or create a safety hazard? Negative impacts of that nature could be a basis upon which your employer could deny your request. Beyond the legal issue, it would seem in the best interest of your employer to honor your request. You’re not requesting time off for something ilicit. Religiously devout employees often hold to high moral standards that pay ethical dividends in the workplace. Employees with strong internal compasses can require less external monitoring. You might want to take the opportunity to explain to your boss what Good Friday means to you, and how your Christian faith has an impact on your work performance. You’re obviously a valued employee and your faith is a big part of that package.

Solo si su empresa tiene más de 15 empleados. Si es así, está de suerte (o más bien en Providencia). Por ley, las empresas deben hacer ajustes razonables para que los empleados observen los días festivos religiosos. Si su empresa otorga una cierta cantidad de días personales pagados, puede elegir esa opción para su observancia del Viernes Santo. Si no lo hace, su único reembolso será eterno. No es un mal negocio. Si bien la ley protege su derecho, esto puede ser cuestionado. ¿Su ausencia el Viernes Santo causaría
una dificultad excesiva para su empleador? Por ejemplo, ¿podría tener un impacto perjudicial en el funcionamiento del negocio, causar un estrés significativo para otros empleados o crear un peligro para la seguridad? SAUL AND ROSANTINA FERNANDEZ’S LOVE FOR ADVENTURE and the outdoors reflects how they view their marriage. It takes work, determination, confidence and endurance, Saul says. And of course, every vacation will always include a hike. At this time, they are planning to walk the Camino di Francesco in Assisi. “In 2017, we walked El Camino de Santiago de Compostela as a retreat with seven couples and a priest for ten days,” Rosantina said. “Each day, the priest gave a talk and homework before we started walking and celebrated Mass at the end of the day. We would say our prayers and talk about our faith while walking. We love to mutually help each other understand all things in the eyes of the Church,” Saul added. No matter how tall the mountain or long the hike, there is nothing, Saul says, more challenging than marriage. “It’s the adventure of a lifetime,” he said smiling at his wife, Rosantina. Originally from Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, Saul and Rosantina and their four children have lived in Eagle 12

Pass for 28 years, where they are parishioners of Our Lady of Refuge Church. When they are not serving as Pre-Cana and Matrimonial Catechism instructors, they are running their family business, Willow Creek Adult Day Care. Their involvement in marriage-prep and family ministry began unexpectedly as an engaged couple when a priest casually asked them how their own experience with the Pre-Cana retreat went. “Us and our big mouths! We started complaining about how it was so boring and how we prayed for the end of the weekend to come! The priest then said, ‘When you come back from your honeymoon, I will be waiting for you. Whatever you didn’t like about it that was so boring, you’ll start planning to
change it. You two will have the vocation of helping the couples that are getting married.’ We looked at each other and said, ‘What?!’ Now, because of him, here we are almost 27 years later still working with couples.” Rosantina said. “I wouldn’t say that we were as devout as we are now,” Saul began. “We were working the Pre-Cana retreat out of a social service, but every time we taught a class about God and the sacrament of marriage, we grew in our spirituality and closer to each other.” Rosantina added, “We might be helping couples, but we are also reinforcing our marriage.” During the first decade of their marriage, they worked, taught Pre-Cana and went to a Spanish Mass in Piedras Negras,

but lived in Eagle Pass. When their four children began attending the English Mass at Our Lady of Refuge School, Saul and Rosantina knew it would be important to fully immerse themselves in one place. With the blessing of their spiritual guide in Piedras Negras, they decided to serve their home diocese and bishop, which at the time was the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Since then, and through the establishment of the Laredo Diocese, they have been teaching “For Better and For Ever,” a one-on-one formation program for engaged couples. They lead married couples in the 20 session diocesan program, Catechesis Matrimonial. Of the many topics they cover, whether it be for engaged or married couples, the most popular topics are communication,

parenting and the dignity of marriage. Communication and prayer, they emphasized, are vital to the survival of a Christian marriage. With all the service they give to couples, they find it important to work at finding Christ in their own marriage following him in the simple things. “Every week, I go to a class with the Pastoral Institute in the diocese,” Rosantina said, “After class, I come back home for lunch, and I explain what my class was about to Saul, because I love it.” There has always been a priest or a nun who challenges them along their spiritual journey. In Saul’s life, the late Father Carlos Aguilera, from Piedras Negras, became his spiritual director and led them to implement Natural Family Planning in their own lives and to teach it in the Pre-Cana classes. For Rosantina, someone who guided her spiritually was Sister Caritina Olmos, a Missionary of Perpetual Help. Rosantina approached Sister Caritina because she wanted to learn how to pray the Liturgy of the Hours. Sister Caritina also invited her to a pilgrimage trip in the Philippines, a life-changing experience. “We wanted a deeper meaning behind the love we have for each other. When we started participating more with the clergy and with the nuns, we saw how God worked through them for us. God is alive, and He’s still here,” Saul said. As they continue their life-long pilgrimage together, their goal is to lead each other to heaven. “Rosantina started teaching me the Liturgy of the Hours, and now we say Lauds together every morning. We have our space, our moment, our coffee and God before our day starts. It’s the safezone. We can say anything and forgive
each other without getting mad; or at least we try not to get mad. Then we go for a run,” Saul and Rosantina said, finishing each other’s sentences. “He lowers my Martha,” Rosantina says, recalling the dynamic of Martha and Mary in the Gospel of St. Luke, as Jesus says, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” (Lk 1041-42) “That’s our adventure,” Rosantina said. “Well, we are still going,” Saul added, “for another 40 years.”

LA AVENTURA DE LA VIDA Encontrando a Cristo en el sacramento del matrimonio EL AMOR DE SAÚL Y ROSANTINA POR LA AVENTURA y el aire libre ha reflejado cómo ven su matrimonio. Saúl comparte que se requiere de trabajo, determinación, confianza y tenacidad. Y por supuesto, cada vez que salen de vacaciones, incluyen siempre una excursión a pie. El plan esta vez es hacer el Camino di Francesco en Asís. “En 2017, completamos El Camino de Santiago de Compostela como retiro, junto con siete parejas y un sacerdote, durante diez días”, dijo Rosantina. “Cada día, el padre nos daba una plática y tarea antes de comenzar a caminar, y terminábamos el día con la Santa Misa”. Saúl agrego: “Orábamos y hablábamos sobre nuestra fe mientras caminábamos. Nos encanta ayudarnos mutuamente a entender todo bajo el punto de vista de la Iglesia”. Saúl nos comparte que no importa qué tan alta sea la montaña o tan larga sea la caminata, no hay nada que se compare con el reto del matrimonio. “Es la aventura de la vida”, dice, sonriendo y mirando a su esposa, Rosantina. Originalmente de Piedras Negras, Coahuila, México, Saul y Rosantina y sus cuatro hijos han vivido en Eagle Pass durante 28 años, en donde pertenecen a la Parroquia de Our Lady of Refuge. Cuando no están sirviendo a la Iglesia en catequesis matrimonial o como instructores de Retiros Pre-Caná, se encargan de la empresa familiar, Willow Creek Adult Day Care. todo tan aburrido, agregando que cómo rezábamos para que se acabara pronto el fin de semana! Entonces, nos dijo: ‘Cuando regresen de la luna de miel, aquí estaré esperándolos. Y en cuanto a eso que dicen que no les gustó por ser tan aburrido, comenzarán a planear cómo cambiarlo. Ustedes dos tendrán la vocación de ayudar a las parejas que planean casarse’. Nos miramos el uno al otro, preguntándonos: - ¿Que qué?- Y ahora, gracias a él, aquí seguimos, casi 27 años después, todavía trabajando con las parejas”, dijo Rosantina. “No diría que en aquel entonces éramos tan devotos como lo somos ahora”, comentó Saúl. “Trabajábamos el retiro Pre-Caná como un servicio social, pero cada vez que dábamos una clase sobre Dios y el Sacramento del Matrimonio, crecíamos en espiritualidad y nos acercábamos más como pareja”. Rosantina agregó: “Tal vez estemos ayudando a las parejas, pero también estamos fortaleciendo nuestro matrimonio”. Durante la primera década de su matrimonio, trabajaban, daban clases en el Retiro Pre-Caná e iban a misa en español en Piedras Negras, pero vivían en Eagle Pass. Cuando sus cuatro hijos comenzaron a asistir a misa en inglés en la escuela de Our Lady of Refuge, Saúl and Rosantina comprendieron la importancia de estar completamente inmersos en un solo lugar. Con la bendición de su guía espiritual en Piedras Negras, quien les exhortó que sirvieran a la diócesis y al obispo de su lugar de residencia, se presentaron en la parroquia que les correspondía en Eagle Pass, que en aquel entonces era parte de la Arquidiócesis de San Antonio. Desde entonces, y a través del establecimiento de la Diócesis de Laredo, dan un curso de formación individualizada para parejas comprometidas al matrimonio
llamado “For Better and For Ever”. Y para las parejas ya casadas, son líderes de un programa diocesano de 20 sesiones, llamado “Catequesis Matrimonial”. De los muchos temas que cubren, ya sea para novios o esposos, los más populares son la comunicación, la crianza de los hijos y la dignidad del matrimonio. La comunicación y la oración, -enfatizaronson vitales para la supervivencia de un matrimonio cristiano. Con todo el servicio que dan a las parejas, no se olvidan de la importancia de esforzarse para encontrar a Cristo en su propio matrimonio, siguiéndolo en las cosas simples de la vida cotidiana. “Todas las semanas, asisto a un curso del Instituto Pastoral de la Diócesis”, dijo Rosantina. “Después de la clase regreso a casa a comer, y le explico a Saúl de lo que trató la clase, porque me encanta”. Siempre ha habido algún sacerdote o religiosa que les reta durante su jornada espiritual. En la vida de Saúl, el Padre Carlos Aguilera de Piedras Negras, (Que en Paz Descanse) fue su director espiritual y quien los guió en la implementación de la Planeación Familiar Natural en su propia vida y en sus clases de Pre-Caná. Para Rosantina, alguien que la guió espiritualmente fue la Hermana Caritina Olmos, de las Misioneras del Perpetuo Socorro. Rosantina se acercó a esta Religiosa porque quería saber cómo rezar la Liturgia de las Horas. La Hermana Caritina además la invitó a una peregrinación a las Filipinas, experiencia que le cambió la vida. “Buscábamos un significado más profundo al amor que nos tenemos. Cuando comenzamos a participar más con el clero y las monjitas, vimos pudimos ver cómo Dios trabajaba con nosotros a través de ellos. Dios vive, y sigue aquí”, dijo Saúl.
Conforme continúan su peregrinar juntos por la vida, su meta es llevarse mutuamente al cielo. “Rosantina empezó a enseñarme la Liturgia de las Horas, y ahora juntos rezamos el Laudes cada mañana. Tenemos nuestro espacio, nuestro momento, nuestro café y a Dios antes de empezar nuestro día. Es nuestra zona de seguridad. Podemos decirnos lo que sea y perdonarnos sin enojarnos; o por lo menos eso intentamos. Luego, salimos a correr”, dijeron Saúl y Rosantina, terminándose las frases entre sí. “Él me baja lo Marta” dice Rosantina, recordando la dinámica de Marta y María en el Evangelio de San Lucas: Pero el Señor le respondió: ‘Marta, Marta, tú andas preocupada y te pierdes en mil cosas: una sola es necesaria. María ha elegido la mejor parte, que no le será quitada’. (Lucas 10: 41-42)
“Ésa es nuestra aventura”, dijo Rosantina. “Y bueno, aquí seguimos”, agregó Saúl, “por 40 años más”.

WHY IS THIS THE GREATEST COMMANDMENT? Christ’s great commandment to us, to “love one another as I have loved you” contains the Old Testament Law, but the Old Testament Law does not contain Christ’s commandment of love. The Old Testament commands us not to kill. Christ’s commandment of love commands us not to get angry without reason. The root of our external actions is found in the human heart. Jesus is telling his listeners, “You have had plenty of time to spend on the Old Testament’s lessons, now it’s time to move to higher lessons.” Jesus does not disturb the authenticity or force of the Old Testament’s Ten Commandments. He asks us, rather, to move to a newer and higher standard. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish, but to fulfill.” (Mt 5:17) In the account of the Last Judgment, we hear Christ telling us: For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you made me welcome; naked and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me.” Then the virtuous will say to him in reply, “Lord, when did we see 16

you hungry and feed you; or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome; naked and clothe you; sick or in prison and go to see you? And the King will answer, “I tell you solemnly, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me.” (Mt 25:35-40) We need to be clear about his point. The way we treat others is the way we treat Christ. For he dwells not in some remote and distant heaven, but rather in those around us. He is a lot closer to us than we think. When Christ was crucified and the veil in the Temple was torn in two, that opening of the Holy of Holies signaled that God was no longer to be found in a building, in Jerusalem’s Temple. He was rather now to be found in a new temple, the temple that is the body of Christ. We are, each of us, living stones that form God’s temple. Each of us is a temple of the Holy Spirit. How we treat each other is, therefore, of supreme importance. Christ’s law of love applies not just to the way we treat others, it now applies to the way we treat Christ himself. ¿POR QUÉ ES ESTE EL MAYOR MANDAMIENTO? El gran mandamiento de Cristo a nosotros de “amarnos unos a otros como yo los he amado” contiene la Ley del Antiguo Testamento, pero la Ley del Antiguo Testamento no contiene el mandamiento de amor de Cristo. El Antiguo Testamento nos ordena no matar. El mandamiento del amor de Cristo nos manda a no enojarnos sin razón. La raíz de nuestras acciones externas se encuentra en el corazón humano. Jesús les está diciendo a sus oyentes: “Han tenido mucho tiempo para dedicar a las lecciones del Antiguo Testamento, ahora es el momento de pasar a lecciones superiores”. Jesús no perturba la autenticidad o la fuerza de los Diez Mandamientos del Antiguo Testamento. Nos pide, más bien, movernos a un estándar nuevo y más alto. En el Evangelio de Mateo, Jesús dijo: “No piensen que he venido para poner fin a la Ley o a los Profetas; no he venido para poner fin, sino a cumplir”. (Mt 5:17) En el relato del Juicio Final, escuchamos a Cristo diciéndonos: “Porque tuve hambre, y ustedes Me dieron de comer; tuve sed, y Me dieron de beber; fui extranjero, y Me recibieron; estaba desnudo, y Me vistieron; enfermo, y Me visitaron; en la cárcel, y vinieron a Mí”. (Mt 25:35-40) Tenemos que ser claros sobre su punto. La forma en que tratamos a los demás es la forma en que tratamos a Cristo. Porque no habita en un cielo remoto y lejano, sino en los que nos rodean. Él está mucho más cerca de nosotros de lo que pensamos. Cuando Cristo fue crucificado y el velo en el Templo se partió en dos, esa apertura del Lugar Santísimo señaló que Dios ya no se encontraba en un edificio, en el Templo de Jerusalén. Ahora se encontraba más bien en un nuevo templo, el templo que es el cuerpo de Cristo. Somos, cada uno de nosotros, piedras vivas que forman el templo de Dios. Cada uno de nosotros es un templo del Espíritu Santo. La forma en que nos tratamos es de suma importancia. La ley de amor de Cristo se aplica no solo a la forma en que tratamos a los demás, ahora se aplica a la forma en que tratamos a Cristo mismo. MEET THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER FOR THE ANNUAL DIOCESAN CONFERENCE THE HEALING POWER OF THE SACRAMENTAL PRESENCE OF CHRIST HE IS Fr. David Songy, O.F.M.Cap., a priest of the Capuchin Province of Mid-America and a clinical psychologist. Currently, he works in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he is the president and C.E.O. of St. Luke Institute. He was the spiritual director and prefect of studies at Redemptoris Mater Archdiocesan Missionary Seminary in Denver, Colorado, and director of counseling services at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. Fr. Songy holds two doctorates: One in psychology from the University of Denver and another in sacred theology from the Teresianum, the Pontifical Institute of Spirituality in Rome. Fr. David is the keynote speaker for the Annual Diocesan Conference, held on March 23, 2019, at TAMIU. He enjoys speaking on the Eucharist and spirituality. His keynote talk is entitled, “The healing power of the sacramental presence of the Eucharist.” ENCOUNTERING CHRIST: Growing up influenced by the charismatic movement in the 1970s, Fr. Songy always knew he wanted to be a priest. The charismatic movement played a major role in his Christian formation. His family’s involvement led them to evangelize others by moving across the country from their home in New Orleans, Louisiana to Denver, Colorado. He was supported by the strong Catholic tradition in his family, including an uncle who was a Benedictine, priest and an aunt who was a Benedictine nun. ANSWERING THE CALL: He attended a Catholic school led by Capuchin Franciscan friars, the same order from which Saint Padre Pio was a part. He was inspired by the order’s way of life and charism. He liked what he saw, entered the novitiate in 1982 and was ordained as a priest in 1987. ABOUT CAPUCHIN FRANCISCANS: Capuchins belong to the First Order of Saint Francis, as do the Franciscans and Conventual Franciscans, and follow the rule of Saint Francis of Assisi. The order was founded as a response to the protestant reformation taking place in Europe in the 1500s. The Capuchin Franciscan friars wanted to be faithful to the original spirit of Saint Francis, rooting themselves in a semicontemplative life and as servants to the poor and marginalized members of society. The charism, or spiritual gift, of the Capuchin Franciscans focuses on evangelization and penance.
A NEW APOSTOLATE: During his time in Papua New Guinea as a missionary priest, Fr. Songy was asked by his superiors to further his studies in pastoral counseling in order to form seminarians. For most of his life as a priest, he has formed seminarians within the Capuchin order, as well as for various dioceses. “I realized that spirituality was an essential component, in addition to psychology, in helping seminarians.” AND ANOTHER: Later in life, when he returned from Papua New Guinea, he studied clinical psychology at the University of Denver. “I was in Rome for three years at the North American College as their psychologist. While there, I did a doctorate in spiritual theology. It became important for me in the healing ministry to address both the psychological and spiritual aspects of formation, depending on what the need of the person was.” HEALING IN THE EUCHARIST: “All of us who are baptized have Christ present in us. We become one with him in listening to his Word and we become one with him in eating his body — his body becomes ours and his blood runs through us. Being open to the grace of Christ in the Eucharist is healing, because our hearts are conformed to Christs.” ON HEALING MASSES: “Healing takes place in every Mass, whether the person knows it or not, as the Healing Spirit of Christ dwelling in us. St Paul says, ‘Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us.’ (Rom 8:35-37) When God heals, it’s always for a particular purpose, and if He doesn’t heal us in the way we are thinking, it doesn’t mean that He hasn’t done anything.” WHAT IS YOUR GOAL AS A PRIEST? “To bring the healing presence of Christ to people throughout the world.” WHAT BRINGS YOU PEACE? “I experience peace when I listen to the Word of God in the Eucharist and recognize He is speaking directly to me.”

Como dice la Escritura: Por tu causa nos arrastran continuamente a la muerte, nos tratan como ovejas destinadas al matadero. Pero no; en todo eso saldremos triunfadores gracias a Aquel que nos amó’. IN SEARCH OF … Our culture abounds with spiritual seekers hungry for an encounter with the true God. Many of these seem convinced that they will somehow know God when they see God. Of course, this implies that they already, in fact, have an image of God in mind and are looking for the corresponding reality. They are more often than not perpetual seekers because they can never quite find the God that exists in their mind out there in the world. This desire is not a bad thing. It is simply misdirected. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Christ is already present to the Church: in his word; in his Church’s prayer; in the poor, the sick and the imprisoned; in the sacrifice of the Mass; and in the person of the minister. The catechism lists one additional way: the sacraments. Consequently, as Pope Francis teaches, Christ is to be encountered “in the web of human relationships” that is the Church.

IN THE SAC MORE THAN A FEELING
Specifically, a sacrament is an efficacious sign of grace. This is to say that a sacrament is capable of producing and conferring the grace that is promised. Pope Francis says it this way: “The sacraments are Jesus Christ’s presence in us.” This is accomplished through the rite by which the Church celebrates a sacrament. The visible rite both signifies and makes present the graces proper to that sacrament. The Church, by the “power of the Holy Spirit who guides her ‘into all truth,’” has discerned over time that there are seven sacraments instituted by Jesus Christ. The seven sacraments “touch all the stages and all the important moments of Christian life: they give birth and increase healing and mission to the Christian’s faith.” They are baptism, confirmation (or Chrismation), Eucharist, penance, anointing of the sick, holy orders and matrimony. 20

WHAT IS A SACRAMENT?

There are those who would challenge the claim that we encounter Jesus in the sacraments because they do not feel anything, they are not touched at the core of their being. However, when we speak about the sacraments as an encounter with Jesus, we are not necessarily referring to an emotional event. Belief based solely on emotion or feeling is on shaky ground, as it is always vulnerable to dulling over time. In a similar way, belief based exclusively on reason or intellect is vulnerable to doubt. Catholics believe what was revealed, not because we can perceive the truth of revelation by the natural light of reason alone or because we get a warm, fuzzy feeling, but because of the authority of God, who makes the revelation. Any lack of material evidence is overcome by confidence in the one who speaks. This matters because the sacraments presuppose faith even as they also nourish it. This faith is grounded in the authority of Christ who instituted them.

EN BUSCA DE … Nuestra cultura está llena de buscadores espirituales hambrientos de un encuentro con el verdadero Dios. Muchos de estos parecen convencidos de que de alguna manera conocerán a Dios cuando vean a Dios. Por supuesto, esto implica que, de hecho, ya tienen en mente una imagen de Dios y están buscando la realidad correspondiente. La mayoría de las veces son buscadores perpetuos porque nunca pueden encontrar del todo el Dios que existe en su mente en el mundo.
Específicamente, un sacramento es un signo eficaz de la gracia. Esto quiere decir que un sacramento es capaz de producir y conferir la gracia que se promete. How to pray the Stations of the Cross
T
he Stations of the Cross during Lent are a devotion and practice that can bring people into a deep and true realization of what God has done for them. We have infinite dignity and worth in God’s eyes: Even if you had been the only person on the earth, God would have sent his Son to die for you – that is how deeply God values us, each of us. Therefore, make the stations and ponder what Christ suffered that you might inherit eternal life.
When you begin to pray – whether in the church or at home – kneel and make an act of contrition. Then, as you are able, reflect on each station. Give each one a few moments of meditation. Pray the Our Father after each station. 22

But, of course, at her young age, I never could have expected my daughter to grasp the significance of Christ’s Resurrection, right? Surely a reference to her own birth is a safer and more understandable response. I’m certain it makes more sense to wait for her to be a bit older before I bore her sincere question with some heavy response about human salvation. Or does it? I know that we are better able to grasp theology as our minds develop into adulthood, but children are smarter than we think. With the right tools and delivery, we can start them toward a better understanding of the most important, and beautiful, part of our life — our relationship with God.
One such way is to bake “resurrection rolls.” These little gems are not only a great way to teach younger kids about the Resurrection, but also a quick and delicious sweet roll to make for any Easter gathering. How delicious? Well they aren't going to be “the best thing that ever happened to you,” but they will rank highly on your list of Easter treats — and they certainly reference well the best thing that ever did happen to all of us!

1 (10 ounce) can refrigerated crescent rolls Package of large marshmallows ¼ cup butter, melted ¼ cup sugar 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon SYMBOLISM Marshmallow – Body of Jesus Butter – Oils used in burial Sugar and cinnamon – Spices used in burial Dough triangle – Cloth used to wrap Jesus Baked roll with empty center – Empty tomb
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Prepare a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray or parchment paper. You may also use a cupcake tin. Separate dough into eight triangles and set aside. Combine sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl and set aside. Dip each marshmallow into bowl of melted butter and roll in cinnamon-sugar. Place on each dough triangle. Pinch dough around marshmallow, sealing all edges. Make sure to seal well to prevent marshmallow from leaking. Brush tops of dough balls with remaining butter and dip in cinnamon-sugar. Place roll with the sugar side up on baking sheet (or in muffin pan). Bake for 13-15 minutes. The marshmallow melts into the dough and the result is the appearance of an empty tomb upon breaking one in half. Best when served warm.

EVERY LIFE IS CHERISHED, CHOSEN, SENT Hundreds of Catholics from various parishes in the diocese marched for life at the annual Pro-Life Rosary Walk, hosted by the Office of Family Life on January 20, 2019. The one-mile pilgrimage from the HernandezLopez Funeral Home to Holy Redeemer Catholic Church was offered in prayer for the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. On January 22, 2019, a 1.5 mile Pro-Life walk took place in Eagle Pass from Maverick County Lake to the city hall downtown. The grand prize winner of the ProLife poster contest is Ricardo Navarro. His art served as the promotional material for the walk.

La peregrinación de una milla, que comenzó en Hernandez-Lopez Funeral Home y terminó en la Iglesia de Holy Redeemer, fue ofrecida en oración para salvaguardar la santidad de la vida, desde el momento de la concepción hasta la muerte natural. El 22 de enero de 2019, se realizó una caminata Pro-Vida de 1.5 millas en Eagle Pass desde el Lago del Condado de Maverick hasta el municipio en el centro de la ciudad. Announces review of clergy files regarding credible allegations of sexual abuse of minors by clergy January 31, 2019
To the clergy, men and women in consecrated life, and laity of the Diocese of Laredo: Today, the Diocese of Laredo unites with the Catholic dioceses in Texas and the Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter to fulfill our commitment made on September 30, 2018 to publish the names of clergy who have been credibly accused of sexually abusing a minor while ministering in the diocese. The bishops’ decision was made in the context of their ongoing work to protect minors from sexual abuse and their efforts to promote healing and a restoration of trust in the Catholic Church. The Diocese of Laredo was established on August 9, 2000 by Pope St. John Paul II. The Most Reverend James A. Tamayo was named by Pope St. John Paul II as the first bishop of the Diocese of Laredo. The diocese consists of an area that was previously portions of the Diocese of Corpus Christi and the Archdiocese of San Antonio, mainly the counties of Dimmit, Jim Hogg, LaSalle, Maverick, Webb, Zapata and Zavala. The Diocese of Laredo was established in the year 2000; therefore, the review of clergy files is from the year 2000 to the present. After having reviewed the files of all clergy who have received permission to minister in the Diocese of Laredo since its inception, there have been no
credible allegations of sexual abuse of a minor by a member of the clergy. The Diocese of Laredo is committed to the prevention of sexual abuse and works diligently with church personnel, volunteers and parents to foster a safe environment for minors. Our Safe Environment Program provides education and training on the prevention of sexual abuse and requires criminal background checks of clergy, volunteers and church personnel.
