Santa, direct from the North Pole, will be arriving at the Fairmont Airport on the North Pole Express around 4:00 p.m., Friday, November 18th. Everyone is invited to meet and greet this special arrival. Remember to bring your camera. Join us on Friday, November 18th for the Glows Parade along with pre- and post-parade activities. The First Congregational Church, 319 Downtown Plaza, will be serving soup and hot sandwiches from 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. and free hot coffee and cider curbside. The Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1200 North North Avenue, will be serving Chili and Oyster Stew from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Gran D’s Popcorn will be serving fresh popped popcorn on the corner of Downtown Plaza and 3rd Street. Heaven’s Table will be collecting food shelf items during the parade, please bring a non-perishable food item to donate. After the parade, stop down to the Blazer Bar & Grill for music and fun. The Glows Parade begins at 6:00 p.m. Come and see the wonderful floats, thousands of lights, and the appearance of Santa on the 27th anniversary of the Glows Parade.

Join us on Wednesday, November 9th at the Southern Minnesota Educational Campus Room 012 from 3-5 pm, as University of Minnesota Senior Research Fellow Benjamin Winchester presents a look at rural America's rebound. Benjamin's research has been the inspiration behind the "Brain Gain" initiatives taking place in rural Minnesota, including our own "Fairmont Area Life" project. In a summary of his upcoming presentation, Benjamin writes: "there is a new urbanity found across
the rural landscape that changes how we look at urbanrural interactions. The next 15-20 years appears to be a great opportunity for American small towns, as a once tight housing supply begins to open up through the changing residential preferences of the retiring baby boomer generation. Overall, as we look to the future, the implications of these changes are positive ones for all of our small towns and open country places." By: Margaret Dillard - Chamber President The beginning of the holiday shopping season is marked by local and national festivities. Here, in Martin County and especially in the Fairmont Area Chamber office if you ask what marks the beginning of the shopping season, you’ll hear about the Fairmont Glows Parade held the third Friday in November and slated this year on Friday, November 18th. Another long-celebrated shopping event held at Downtown Plaza and particularly of note by locals is Holiday Delights to be held December 3rd. Nationally, since the early 2000's, we have adopted the day after Thanksgiving as the popular kick-off of gift purchases for Christmas. The familiar day, known as Black Friday refers to the time of year when retailers cease to operate at a loss or “in the red” and begin to turn a profit traditionally reflected by penning financial records with black ink instead of red. More recently, the day after Black Friday (the day after, the day after Thanksgiving) has become known as Small Business Saturday. I love that this effort recognizes small businesses and encourages shoppers to be aware of the economic and cultural impact
on communities, but the idea of confining the concept leads me to consider that the message is somewhat stunted. I believe that Shop Local Every Day to Support, Strengthen, Care for Your Community and Neighbors in Business (though way too long to adopt as a campaign) is more the spirit. To be more demonstrative: Listen up consumers, shoppers, children with you Christmas money now burning holes in your pockets, you can have an incredible opportunity to make a positive impact! According to a 2013 article in Forbes magazine, “… every dollar spent locally produces two-to-four times the local jobs, two-to-four times the local income and wealth effects, two-to-four times the local taxes, and two-to-four times the local charitable contributions.”* Data courtesy Civic Economics suggests for every $100 spent, this much returns to your community: Locally owned, independent brick & mortar store: $68 National chain or “big box” store: $43 Online store (unless you live in the same place): $0 Chamber Gift Certificates are a great way to support your community while giving the gift everyone loves to receive! Did you know that the holiday decorations on the street lights you enjoy in Fairmont each year are actually paid for and supplied by the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce? Each fall, we ask for donations to replenish our designated Community Christmas Decoration Fund. It costs approximately $1,500 per year just to refurbish the street pole decorations as they are getting old and outdated. We are hoping to purchase new ones as these decorations age and fall apart. The replacement costs, however, are quite significant! We would appreciate any donations from local citizens, businesses and organizations in any amount you can manage to help us keep our community shining bright during the holiday season. The Agri-business Committee of the Fairmont Area Chamber will resume their monthly meetings beginning Tuesday, November 15th at The Ranch Restaurant. Wanda Patsche will speak about her trip to Vietnam as a part of the MN Rural Leadership Program. The mission of the Agri-business Committee is "To provide a means for Farmers and other Ag-business people to promote the importance of agriculture in Fairmont and Martin County." The Agri-business Committee also supports education in agriculture by offering two an-
nual $4200 scholarships to graduating seniors of Martin County high schools who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree in an ag-related field of study. The committee raises money to help fund these scholarships by hosting two highly-anticipated local events: the Pork Masters Annual Golf Outing and the Annual Blue Ribbon Pork Cook-off.
