Join us on Wednesday, November 9th at the Southern Minnesota Educational Campus Room 012 from 3-5 pm, as University of Minnesota Senior Research Fellow Benjamin Winchester presents a look at rural America's rebound. Benjamin's research has been the inspiration behind the "Brain Gain" initiatives taking place in rural Minnesota, including our own "Fairmont Area Life" project. In a summary of his upcoming presentation, Benjamin writes: "there is a new urbanity found across

the rural landscape that changes how we look at urbanrural interactions. The next 15-20 years appears to be a great opportunity for American small towns, as a once tight housing supply begins to open up through the changing residential preferences of the retiring baby boomer generation. Overall, as we look to the future, the implications of these changes are positive ones for all of our small towns and open country places." You can register for this presentation or find more information about Benjamin and his research on our website: www.fairmontchamber.org

By: Margaret Dillard - Chamber President The beginning of the holiday shopping season is marked by local and national festivities. Here, in Martin County and especially in the Fairmont Area Chamber office if you ask what marks the beginning of the shopping season, you’ll hear about the Fairmont Glows Parade held the third Friday in November and slated this year on Friday, November 18th. Another long-celebrated shopping event held at Downtown Plaza and particularly of note by locals is Holiday Delights to be held December 3rd. Nationally, since the early 2000's, we have adopted the day after Thanksgiving as the popular kick-off of gift purchases for Christmas. The familiar day, known as Black Friday refers to the time of year when retailers cease to operate at a loss or “in the red” and begin to turn a profit traditionally reflected by penning financial records with black ink instead of red. More recently, the day after Black Friday (the day after, the day after Thanksgiving) has become known as Small Business Saturday. I love that this effort recognizes small businesses and encourages shoppers to be aware of the economic and cultural impact

on communities, but the idea of confining the concept leads me to consider that the message is somewhat stunted. I believe that Shop Local Every Day to Support, Strengthen, Care for Your Community and Neighbors in Business (though way too long to adopt as a campaign) is more the spirit. To be more demonstrative: Listen up consumers, shoppers, children with you Christmas money now burning holes in your pockets, you can have an incredible opportunity to make a positive impact! According to a 2013 article in Forbes magazine, “… every dollar spent locally produces two-to-four times the local jobs, two-to-four times the local income and wealth effects, two-to-four times the local taxes, and two-to-four times the local charitable contributions.”* Data courtesy Civic Economics suggests for every $100 spent, this much returns to your community: Locally owned, independent brick & mortar store: $68 National chain or “big box” store: $43 Online store (unless you live in the same place): $0 Chamber Gift Certificates are a great way to support your community while giving the gift everyone loves to receive! This program helps customers

Four local professionals will step up to serve on the 13 member board of the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce. Sara Pierce, Dave Cone, Brandon Edmundson, and Deb Barnes will officially begin their three year terms this coming December. We want to thank our outgoing board members: Past Chair-Doug Hoffmann; Dr. Kerri Henderson; Sara Cyphers and Rich Johnson for their generous ser-

vice to the chamber and to our community. Those who will continue to serve on the board through 2017 include: Ron Kopischke; Kerry Nagel Allen; Stephanie Busiahn; Chris Carstensen; Mandi Kosbab; Les Anderson and Ann Terfehr. We would also like to recognize and thank Andy Mueller for stepping in to fill the shoes of past board member Ryan Nicholson upon his relocation.

"This year, don't just Shop Small® for our business services and programs. Do it for the businesses you love, for the community you call home, and for the money that can stay in the neighborhood when we all Shop Small. This Nov 26, get up, get out, and Shop"

Shine on!

Did you know that the holiday decorations on the street lights you enjoy in Fairmont each year are actually paid for and supplied by the Fairmont Area Chamber of Commerce? Each fall, we ask for donations to replenish our designated Community Christmas Decoration Fund. It costs approximately $1,500 per year just to refurbish the street pole decorations as they are getting old and outdated. We are hoping to purchase new ones as these decorations age and fall apart. The replacement costs, however, are quite significant! We would appreciate any donations from local citizens, businesses and organizations in any amount you can manage to help us keep our community shining bright during the holiday season. If you would like to donate, you can contact us by phone at (507) 235-5547, or reach us by email at info@fairmontchamber.org

Edward Jones Investments - Mandi Kosbab (507) 235-8524 - Member SIPC Put Thanksgiving Lessons to Work in Your Financial Plans It’s almost Thanksgiving – a holiday centered on family, caring and sharing. You can carry these same values into your daily life – and you can certainly incorporate them into your financial strategies for taking care of your loved ones. First of all, protect your family by maintaining adequate life and disability insurance. Next, invest in your children. If you have young children, you may want to open a tax-advantaged college savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan. If you have adult children, you could write them each a check to help them fund their IRAs for the year. Here’s another financial move that can ultimately benefit your family: Maintain your own financial independence throughout your life. Specifically, consider working with a financial professional to find a solution for the potentially devastating costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay. Finally, share your estate plans with your loved ones. By informing them of your wishes now, you can avoid hurt feelings and unpleasant surprises later. By applying the lessons of Thanksgiving to your financial plans, both you and your family will have reason to be thankful.

shop local and keeps dollars in our community. Most businesses throughout Martin County currently participate, offering recipients a multitude of ways to use them from basic necessities to luxuries. Chamber Gift Certificates are great for holiday, graduation and anniversary gifts and are ideal for employee bonuses. Whether they are spent on gas and groceries or restaurants and jewelry, Chamber Gift Certificates are an easy way to support Fairmont and surrounding communities. With no expiration date, they are the perfect fit for that hard to shop for friend or an extra special employee bonus. Another effort that I stumbled onto is the 3/50 Project™. (the350project.net) that offers a simple, personal process to spending money in community brick and mortar shops: “Save your lo-

Your contribution is what keeps this business alive. If half of the employed U.S. population spent $50 each month in these businesses, their purchases would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue. — U.S. Department of Labor / Bureau of Labor Statistics” Whether local festivities like the Glows Parade and Holiday Delights or national campaigns such as Black Friday, Small Business Saturday or The 3/50 Project send you to get your wallet and gift list, remember that each dollar spent locally positively impacts the economic, cultural and social fabric of our community.
