e are so pleased to present Archives of Consciousness: Six Cuban Artists this semester in the museum’s Walsh Gallery. This exhibition presents the work of six contemporary Cuban artists and contextualizes them within the tumultuous history of their generation. We are extremely grateful to Terri and Steven Certilman who have so generously lent the works in this exhibition from their private collection. Steven’s enthusiasm and admiration of the artists whose work he has been collecting for almost 20 years is contagious! We would also like to thank Lillian Guerra, PhD (Professor of History, University of Florida), and Arianne Faber Kolb, PhD, for co-curating this exhibition and for sharing their expertise with us. Please enjoy the following essay written by Dr. Guerra, and the artists’ biographies crafted by Dr. Kolb which follow it. We are honored to also include an essay by Jorge Fernández Torres, the Director of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes), and the former director of the 11th and 12th iterations of the Bienal de La Habana. We are happy to be able to present this exhibition catalogue and all of the educational materials in the gallery in both English and Spanish. This bilingual effort was made possible by the students in Dr. Laura Gasca Jiménez’s senior seminar in translation (SP 381): Julia Farrell, Karen Maizincho, Gina Melone, Yafreisi Olivo, Rosemarie Richetelli, Massiel Rosales Montenegro, Janae Staltaro, Arianna Tartaglia, and Rebecca Vives. We are grateful to Dr. Michelle Farrell who has collaborated with us on this exhibition as faculty liaison, and who was instrumental in helping us to create our strong lineup of exhibition programming (see p. 59) Thanks and appreciation as always go to our exceptional museum team for their hard work in bringing this exhibition to fruition: Michelle DiMarzo, Curator of Education and Academic Engagement, Emily McKeon, Museum Assistant, and Megan Paqua, Registrar, as well as museum intern Diallo Ponte-Simon ‘20. We are also grateful for the additional support provided across the University by Edmund Ross, Susan Cipollaro, and Tess Brown Long. Carey Mack Weber Frank and Clara Meditz Executive Director
