ADVANCING INTO THE FUTURE INNOVATING A NEW FRONTIER BY DR. THOMAS BUSSING Raytheon Vice President, Advanced Missile Systems

Raytheon is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency this year, and I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge my experience working directly for DARPA. While supporting the Tactical Technology Office at the agency, I had the privilege of establishing and managing many state of the art demonstration programs that developed key technologies to benefit the warfighter. Upon leaving DARPA, it seemed like a natural transition to work for Raytheon, where I would be able to bring the ethos of the agency to the defense industry and help develop new, game-changing systems and capabilities for national security. One revolutionary technology we are working on at Raytheon is hypersonic weapons, which consist partly of DARPA-funded research and development as well as the military services. We view our inclusion in the agency’s innovation ecosystem as critical, and we strive to offer value as a partner in the success of the agency and its programs. This relationship spans several decades and we foresee many more years of

successful innovation and collaboration as we look toward the future battlespace and the technologies and systems that will be required. Transitioning technology from the lab to the battlefield is a challenge that Raytheon welcomes. As a legacy weapon manufacturer, we strive to develop a keen understanding of our customers’ needs. Innovating upon the proven technology of our weapons, we enable our nation to stay ahead of imminent and future global threats. Threats to our nation are advancing daily. The defense industry must develop reliable, responsive, accurate and lethal weapon systems to stay ahead of these threats. With DARPA and the military’s support, we are developing the next generation of systems that will meet these criteria and equip our future military for success in the multi-domain battlespace. It is with great pride we congratulate DARPA on 60 years of catalyzing advanced capabilities and technologies to improve our national security. Raytheon is honored to be an industry partner in your innovation ecosystem as your agency strives for transformational change.
