If skiing is you we’re your dea Faction. noun. “A minority group working within, and in opposition to, a majority group.”

Faction was born of frustration. In 2003 with a degree in Product Design and eight years skiing and working in the ski resorts of Australia, Canada and France I returned to my home in Melbourne. I was frustrated with my life, my career working in a corporate environment and disillusioned with skiing. Brought up with the philosophy that if you can’t find what you want you build it yourself, I found an old press in France and started designing skis that reflected the type of skiing me and my friends were doing. Product design is not just a skillset, it’s a philosophy. An approach. Skis at the time were foam cored, skinny, made in China and frankly ugly. I started with a blank piece of paper and the first ski I designed was the Wednesday - with a 92mm waist at the time one of the fattest skis on the market (!) and still in our lineup today. Living in Verbier we do everything - park, piste, cliffs, touring. A ski needs to be a living combination of performance, versatility, durability and beauty. They are something you spend a lot of hard-earned money on, and something that you spend some of the most amazing days of your life on. To skiers around the world Faction represents the best designed & built freeride and freestyle skis you can buy, with a world-class manufacturing base in the heart of the European Alps and a strong commitment to social and environtmental sustainability. Our 2011/12 collection is the pinnacle of everything I set out to do when I started Faction - a compact yet diverse lineup of some of the most versatile high-performance skis on the market, helmets, poles and accessories. A melting pot of friends, music, art, design and skiing. Tony McWilliam Managing+Creative Director Verbier, Switzerland

The Snake Transition Project

Winter 2011/12 Collection

A revolutionary step forward in ski design & performance.

In conjunction with NBL Sport, we’ve been researching how to make our skis lighter and easier to ride, without sacrificing edge grip or torsional strength. The Snake Transition Project (S.T.P.) is the fruit of our labour. Up to 30% lighter skis with equivalent or better torsion than a traditionally built ski, resulting in more positive edge grip and easier turn initiation. A wave pressed into the full length of the ski during construction is the secret. Utilised on three of our skis this year - the new Prodigy, Agent 90 and Agent 100 - our proprietary STP technology is a true revolution.

13

Rocker: the new black Here at The Faction Collective we have developed what we call “Rocker 2.0”. Combining trad-itional camber together with rocker in differing combinations helps us design skis that are more highly tuned to the riders needs, whilst making them even more versatile. “Rocker 2.0” is used on five of our skis this year: the Alias 90 & 100, Prodigy, 3.Zero, Royale and Thirteen.

2011/12 camberlines Traditional Camber. Traditional camber gives positive turn initiation, predictable rebound and control on groomed snow and hardpack.

All-mountain Twin Rocker. Tip & tail rocker and traditional camber on the 2011/12 3.Zero & Prodigy combine to create an off-piste bias ski that floats amazingly yet is still quick edge-to-edge. BC-freestyle Rocker. Symmetrical tip & tail rocker and flat camber underfoot on the Royale provide float riding normal or switch, as well as instantaneous edge control.

Big-mountain Rocker. Tip rocker and flat camber through the Thirteen together with a very firm flex give maximum float and feel at speed.

Design+ graphics

Designing a ski is a craft that requires fastidious attential to detail, careful selection of flexes, materials and dimensions.. and some secret tricks only a shaper knows... Everything to do with a ski - its shape, flex, construction, materials and graphics - is assessed and designed from scratch with the perspective of the end-user in mind, not just a market segment. The proof is in our Awards.

Awards Agent awarded “Editors Pick” by Backcountry, Outside & Telemark magazines, USA 2010. Agent awarded “Palme Ski Mag” & “Ski Remarquable” by Ski magazine, France 2010. Royale awarded 1st pick, Powder section, Fantasy Draft, Powder magazine 2010 Buyers Guide. Heroine awarded “Top 40 skis of 2009” by Fluid Magazine, France.

The Axis Project Launched to give artists & designers the opportunity to work in an unusual medium and strengthen the links between art, music and snowsports - the Axis Project started two years ago with a competition to design the Kennedy topsheet, and received over 150 entrants worldwide. This year we are proud to launch the work of Taka Sudo, a Japanese-Canadian artist living and working in Whistler. Our first collaborations are for the graphics on the 2011-12 Prodigy and KISS/Gene Simmons inspired Thirteen.

Handmade in the E.U. “Handmade in the EU is our maxim, and we stay true to our word. Each ski is manufactured from carefully selected wood cores, rockwell-treated steel edges, the highest quality silkscreened topsheets and the finest base material available. The skis are gloss lacquered, hand-tuned and ground before leaving the factory.

This process ensures consistent flex, high performance straight out of the store and long durability. We were the first independent ski brand to offer a two-year warranty against manufacturing defects.

The Echo Initiative Ski construction is a process that by its nature requires wood, steel, inks, bonding agents and fibreglass. We are committed to doing what we can to reduce our impact on the environment, both in our production facility and in our logistics. We do not use colour sublimation in our printing. We have started to use water-based inks in our silkscreen topsheets. We use wood offcuts to heat our factory and recycle all waste material. We are in the process of assessing our production house, logistics and offices for compliance to ISO 14001.

Wood is good! A skis’ core and the materials it is wrapped in are crucial to how a ski feels on snow, as well as its longevity. Every ski benefits from a fulllength wood core and sandwich construction. Our cores are made from hand-picked poplar, with birch stringers for rebound & durability. Depending on the ski, the ratio of woods and laminates, plus the fibreglass used to wrap the core is adjusted. SILKSCREEN PRINTED TOPSHEET FIBREGLASS VIBRATION DAMPENING LAYER LAMINATED WOOD CORE ABS SIDEWALLS FIBREGLASS ROCKWELL STEEL EDGES SINTERED BASE MATERIAL

2011/12 core types Matrix core Our snappiest core. The poplar strips and torsion box re-inforcement underfoot help to give a large ‘buttering’ section in front and behind the binding area, while making sure you’ve got enough pop to launch for days. Used on: Kennedy / Area Matrix-Plus core Our Matrix-Plus core is designed for the perfect relationship between dampness and rebound. More dense wood together with thicker vertically-profiled poplar provides smooth on-snow feel with great rebound yet light weight. Used on: Wednesday / Heroine Half-Nelson core Fat skis require a different approach to cores. The Half-Nelson uses custom-designed laminates to give a combination of strength, dampness at speed. A full length core right to the tip of the ski, the Half-Nelson is still relatively light. Used on: Prodigy / 3.zero / Agent / Royale Full-Nelson core The wood/glass re-inforced core of the Full-Nelson is designed for one thing: keeping a big mountain ski under control at high speed, providing stability and dampness yet providing the maximum amount of feel. Job done. Used on: Thirteen

Park/Pipe -guys Kennedy Developed purely for the park the Kennedy has a perfectly symmetrical core balanced over the mid point of the ski. Equal height tip and tail, zero sidecut setback, basically all this means is: you want the same ski switch as riding forward and perfect balance in the air you got it with the Kennedy. With a narrow profile from tip to tail and a slightly stiffer flex than the Area, the Kennedy is truly at home in the half pipe. Features: Sandwich-construction; Matrix core; zero sidecut-setback; equal height tip and tail; medium flex; anti-chipping sidewalls; full-wrap one-piece edges; ptex-4000 die-cut bases; twin mount points.

Heroine As a sibling to the Wednesday the Heroine is just as versatile, she will ski everywhere and everything, powder, park, pipe even cruise down the piste, if you are that way inclined. With a softer core and shorter lengths, the Heroine is ideal, for shorter lighter people, invariably that is the ladies amongst us, but boys don’t be afraid to have a play. Features: Sandwich-construction; Matrix-plus core; medium-soft flex; anti-chipping sidewalls; full-wrap one-piece edges; ptex-4000 die-cut bases; twin mount points.

Fat twins - rockered Prodigy

Featuring:

The Prodigy likes to go exploring around resort, finding secret stashes in the trees and hidden gullies filled with fresh powder. If getting to these spots requires crossing mogul fields, crusty crud maybe even a go in the park then you’ve got no problems as the Prodigy loves it all. Rocker technology, in tip and tail with traditional camber under foot just makes all of this even more fun. STP technology makes a torsionally-stiff, light ski. Features: Sandwich-construction; Half-Nelson core; medium flex; anti-chipping sidewalls; full-wrap one-piece edges; ptex-4000 die-cut bases

BC freestyle - rockered Royale This ski does it all, but is happiest floating through deep powder or over pillows or through trees or cutting the crud or looking epic in lift lines or making your day. Stiffer than most BC-freestyle Rockers the Royale is stable at speed while maintaining a lightweight 4700gm/pair so you can get freestyle with them. Basically ski royalty. You should probably wear purple and ermine to set foot upon her. Features: Sandwich-construction; Half-Nelson core; medium-firm flex; anti-chipping sidewalls; full-wrap one-piece edges; ptex-4000 die-cut bases; twin mount points.

Freeride/touring - rockered Agent 90

Featuring:

The Agent 90 is a little more versatile brother to the 100, for those of you who don’t get to spend everyday disappearing in to the backcountry. The Agent 90 has a slightly softer, shorter and narrower profile - however it will still float through the powder with Rocker tip technology, and enjoy in resort cruising down pistes or carving through crud. STP technology makes a torsionally-stiff, light ski. Features: Sandwich-construction; Half-Nelson core; medium-stiff flex; anti-chipping sidewalls; full-wrap one-piece edges; ptex-4000 die-cut bases; ABS tail protector.

Helmets

When we first started Faction, our commitment was to provide the most versatile, high performance freeride/freestyle skis on the market. As we’ve grown, our focus has expanded to include products that help make each day on skis safer, more comfortable and more enjoyable. For us, our commitment to safety matches our commitment to having fun - none of us ski without protection, and neither should you. For the past year we have been working in conjunction with TSG, a fellow Swiss brand that has been making helmets and protective gear since 1988, combining our design capabilities and their engineering skills and experience. For 2011/12 we are launching our first collaboration: two unique helmets that use the best materials, manufacturing and design techniques available to give unparalleled levels of safety, comfort and freedom of movement. All our helmets are laboratory tested and certified to European CE EN 1077 and North American ASTM 2040 standards to give the rider 100% confidence in their performance.

Technology All our helmets feature the following tech for your safety and comfort. Flex-tech

For the first time ever on a helmet, our Flex-tech features a mutli-segmented EPS insert that automatically adapts itself to the wearers head shape. It also improves air circulation and allows heat to get pulled out by the venting more efficiently. Only on the Agent.

Low rider

Our low rider design improves front and side protection.

ABS shell

We use an injection-molded Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene plastic to provide a bombproof, shock resistant shell.

EPS impact foam

Expanded PolyStyrene foam is 98% air, 2% plastic. Formed in cells, the EPS is incredibly light yet strong and flexible.

Optimised airflow system

The size and position of the air vents has been carefully design to maintain an optimum amount of airflow. This helps keep a consistent temperature no matter what the conditions. All vents are also fully screened to prevent any unwanted items getting in - keeps air in, but snow and dirt out. On top of this, eight small air channels in the inner foam of the helmet combine to pull heat away from your head. No more sweat!

Heat-sealed removable padding

The padding inserts in the helmet are pre-molded, heat-sealed, removable and washable. All helmets come with two sets of inserts to customise fit and ensure all-day-long comfort on the hill.

Goggle clip

Rear goggle clip keeps your goggles in place, even in the bar.

Removable earpads 3-point strap adjustment

The chin strap is adjustable at 3-points to ensure a perfect fit.

40 www.factionskis.com

Our earpads clip in quickly and simply - making it easy to convert from winter to spring mode, or to use with a beanie underneath.

The 3x3x3 Project

Dom Daher

Yves Garneau

Tero Repo

When Faction started, one of the goals was to give artists and designers the opportunity to work in an unusual medium and strengthen the links between art, music and snowsports – so Faction created the Axis Project. The first project was a design competition to create the Kennedy topsheets. Faction continues to work with artists and designers from all over the world on ski graphics, limited edition designs for stores and T-shirts. This year the Axis project is 3x3x3: 3 artists, 3 t-shirts, 3 times a year. The first series is with three photographers. Dom Daher, who brought the original idea to Faction, Yves Garneau , a Verbier local and one of Faction’s oldest friends; and last but not least, Tero Repo, originating from Finland he has also made his home in Verbier. Look out for regular releases of the 3x3x3 limited edition t’s over the coming year.
