Flying flags at half-mast As a sign of mourning the flag is flown at half mast. Hereby the flag is first hoisted to the top, after which it is slowly taken down until the middle of the flag is at half of its normal height, after which the flag line is tied. The flag must never touch the ground or hit something. When this happens or when this is about to happen, the flag must be tied with the outer blue point to the flag line. When taking down a flag that flies at half-mast, it is first slowly hosted to the top and then slowly taken down in the same way. Only when there is an official commemoration, the flag is hoisted slowly and stately to the top after playing the national anthem. At all other locations the flag remains at halfmast.

Only when it concerns a municipal event, the order is just the opposite. If flags of other nations are hoisted next to the Dutch flag, the first letter of the names of the countries concerned in the French language is decisive for the mutual order in general. Royal standard The Royal/personal standard flag is always out at the residential palaces/ homes when the person in question is in the Netherlands, so he/she does not have to be actually president in the premises. At the work palace the standard flag is put out as soon as the Queen has left. The standard flags also hang out at night. So lighting the flag, as mentioned in the flag instructions, only therefore apply applies Hoisting more flags to the national flag.
