Flying flags at half-mast As a sign of mourning the flag is flown at half mast. Hereby the flag is first hoisted to the top, after which it is slowly taken down until the middle of the flag is at half of its normal height, after which the flag line is tied. When taking down a flag that flies at half-mast, it is first slowly hosted to the top and then slowly taken down in the same way. Only when there is an official commemoration, the flag is hoisted slowly and stately to the top after playing the national anthem. At all other locations the flag remains at halfmast.
