Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy In 1973, Tom Matuska began his taxidermy business in the basement of his home. Because of his love of nature and desire for perfection, the lifelong dream of becoming a taxidermist soon became a reality. Business flourished and soon the Matuska Taxidermy Studio grew to be one of the most respected studios in the midwest, mounting trophies from around the world. The word spread and soon people were asking how they too could learn the art of taxidermy. Thus, in 1984, the Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy was founded with its first class of two students. Like the commercial studio, the school soon became recognized throughout the nation as one of the finest available. The course outline includes a broad spectrum of mounting techniques covering birds, fish, gameheads, large and small life-size mammals and rugs. Fiberglass reproduction, form alteration, natural habitat construction, pricing, record keeping, reference filing and airbrushing are also included. Students are taught basic business practices, advertising techniques and successful marketing, all of which are vital to building a sound business. Throughout the nine-week training program students receive a minimum of 360 hours of intensive training. Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy is connected to our commercial studio. Matuska Taxidermy Studio has a spacious customer display and reception area to welcome students upon their arrival. Our students observe first hand how a successful commercial studio was built and learn the same time-proven techniques we utilize in our commercial studio. The Matuska Taxidermy Supply Company is also located on the premises and provides not only students but taxidermy studios nationwide with updated information on the newest developments and techniques. Students have the option to purchase supplies from our complete inventory in house or other supply companies of their choice. Guidance continues with our toll free tech line through our supply company for our graduates. While reading through our catalog, please write down any questions you may have concerning our course and call toll free 800-488-3256 to allow us to assist you.

TESTIMONIALS

Testimonials From Graduates “There is so much to be said about my decision to go to the Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy. I’ve always had a passion for the outdoors and an appreciation for wildlife arts. At 30 years old deciding to change your career can be a scary thing. I researched for years, speaking to many past students and some of the teachers themselves. Right from the start I knew I had made the best decision. I feel this program was the most balanced program that I researched. Any project I could imagine Tom and his staff were right there to make it a reality. There is no cutting corners in this program, which is a perfectionist’s dream. Tom will go the extra mile to make sure you have the skills you need to be successful. Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy has paved the road to a successful career for me. The quality of mounts I did in school far exceeded my expectations and greatly surpass other taxidermy work I’ve seen in my local area. My experience there goes beyond what I learned in school. I’ve gained so many wonderful lifelong friends and had so many wonderful experiences. Vicki made the living situation comfortable and was always there if a problem arose. The Matuskas are some of the most humble, hospitable and kind people I have ever met. Spirit Lake Iowa was “home” and will always have a piece of my heart. Thank you to the Matuskas and staff for the amazing adventure and a new career.” Kindest Regards from your friend, Breanna Blankenship, CA “I am so glad I made the decision to go to Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy! I learned more than I could have ever imagined about the art of taxidermy and the teachers were very helpful. The environment is so welcoming and definitely makes you feel as if you’ve always belonged there. I feel that the class prepared me very well for starting up my own business and that I was taught how to create high quality taxidermy projects. I will definitely cherish the time I spent at Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy for the rest of my life. It was truly a wonderful experience, I would recommend this school to anyone that has a desire to learn how to create top quality taxidermy work!” Nikki Scheer, NE

“It means a lot to me to be in your catalog and have other students see what a proud student of your school has done with his education! It has been a long road filled with great times and hard earned steps forward. It is the foundation and the fact that I had a great teacher to get me to a place and direction that I could believe in and a way to succeed.”

Rick Krane, NH

When people ask, “Where did you learn to do this?” I proudly tell them, Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy.” I always let people know that if they are serious about learning taxidermy, go where I went, “They will start you out right!” Darrin Kliment, MN

“Hello from Minnesota. Well it has been about one year since I attended your school. I would like you to know that everything is going very well for me. I have been working hard to grow my business. The training I received while attending The Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy has given me the tools to succeed in what is now my full time job. I am confident that without the training you provided, both in the art of taxidermy as well as proven business practices, I would still be fumbling around wondering if I was going to ever make taxidermy a career. I feel so lucky to get out of bed in the morning and get paid to do something that I truly love doing. I also wanted to tell you and your staff, “THANK YOU!” Everyone has always been so informative when I call with questions. I really appreciate the fact that you are always willing to help and never make it seem that you are too busy.” Curt Markgraf, MN “Thanks for all that I’ve learned, and allowing me to have one of the best summers I’ve ever had. I feel as though I’ve made friends with some of the finest people a person can know. Attending your class was truly a learning and fun experience. I can already see that your stress for perfection will pay off in the future. I’ve compared my mounts to others in the area and even though I don’t feel that I’ve reached my level of perfection, these guys are in trouble!” Tony Romano Jr. “Hello, my name is Andres Gallo, owner and operator of Artisan Creations Taxidermy in Pine Mountain Club, California. I attended and graduated from the Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy and can honestly say it has been a life changing experience for me. After my graduation, I opened up a shop right when I got home. The techniques and skills I was taught in school have given me the ability to not only be in this business but to stay in it and be successful as well. I enjoy all fields of taxidermy and practice and offer all services to my clients. When I was searching for a school to attend, the Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy was unsurpassed. I compared it to all schools and decided this was the school for me. I knew I had made the right decision as soon as I started. Tom and his staff go the extra mile to make sure you learn the skills of the trade and everything you’ll need to be successful and become a reputable taxidermist. After over two years in the business I continue to learn with every mount I produce. Thank you, Tom Matuska and staff, for not only making it such a friendly experience, but for giving me a new career as well. Hope to see you all soon!” Andres Gallo, CA “I just wanted to thank you all again for giving me what I needed- superb instruction and the tools to succeed. Tom, you’re my mentor. If I ever become half as good as you, I’ll be satisfied.” Al Baken, CA

Curriculum Anatomy

A basic understanding of the skeletal design and musculature of the animals a student will be working with is essential. We will train you in applying veining and accent to muscle detail and giving realistic expression to your mounts.

Base-Making Design and Composition

Realistic base work natural to the animal’s habitat adds life and interest to a quality mount. Each student will be instructed on how to replicate artificial snow, water, ice, icicles, foliage, rocks, etc. Students will design and construct their own dioramas for their mounts. Note: Students will complete an assortment of attractive bases and habitats to their mounts. If large complex bases require extra time and expense students may have to adjust their speciman package.

Business

Each student will be advised in proper business practices, beginning with building your business from the ground up and advertising techniques that work. Students will receive instruction on accurately pricing their work by evaluating cost per hour and overhead along with the necessary record keeping methods.

Fiberglass/Graphite Fish Reproductions

Catch and release fishing is the wave of the future. Students are instructed in casting and reproducing fish from the actual specimen, as well as painting and finishing commercial reproductions.

Form Alteration

Form alteration is essential to creative taxidermy. Students will learn time efficient methods to add muscle, or change size, bulk, girth, pose or position. Creative alterations enhance a mount from average to spectacular.

Freeze Drying

Students will acquire a working knowledge of the freeze dry system and its practicality and applications in today’s taxidermy industry. Major problems as well as advantages will be evaluated.

Laws

State and Federal regulations and how they affect the taxidermist is covered in depth. Students learn Federal Migratory Bird record keeping and tagging in compliance with government regulations.

Reference Filing

Collecting and filing photos, sketches, and measurements is necessary to the construction of quality mounts. Good references will prove invaluable to the beginning taxidermist as well as the veteran alike. The accuracy of the mounted animal is what produces realistic trophies.

Tanning

A variety of tanning methods will be discussed. Many capes and hides mounted by the student will be tanned in our studio using a premium commercial tan. Students are trained in machine fleshing, beam shaving and finish fleshing, all crucial to the tanning procedure.

Questions & Answers There are a lot of different schools out there. Why should I consider the Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy?

Our experience speaks for itself. Our award winning instructors are full time commercial taxidermists and have been training students in the art of taxidermy for nearly 35 years. NWIST has trained successful taxidermists across the nation in addition to many foreign students and we boast of a large number of state, national and world award winners. We pride ourselves on the quantity and quality of attention we give each student. On most days our school will provide one instructor for no more than six students and sometimes it’s even less so personal attention is guaranteed. Upon graduation, your training doesn’t stop. Our instructors are always available for phone and e-mail support and can talk you through most problems. You won’t regret the decision to become an NWIST graduate!

If I come to school I would like to do a mtn. lion and a strutting turkey or maybe an elk head as part of my specimen package. Is this possible?

Students at NWIST are free to choose their specimen package and some choose larger trophies to mount. It is important to remember that any of these larger projects will consume a large amount of class time and limit the student in other areas.

Is taxidermy as popular as it used to be? I’m concerned that I’d invest a lot of money in a profession that may be dying out.

With the availability in lifelike products to today’s taxidermist along with excellent training more lifelike and longer lasting trophies are available for the sportsman. Thanks to the quality of hunting and fishing trophies being harvested, the taxidermy profession has never been better.

How much room does taxidermy require?

Although large mammals can take up considerable working room, most taxidermy projects require very little work space. The average waterfowl can be completed on a small card table.

How much money will I actually have invested in school?

The tuition and housing needs are easy to determine (page 14) but your specimen package and living expenses (food and entertainment) can vary and are totally up to each individual student.

Although your course covers all areas of taxidermy, I have no desire to do fish. Can I tailor my training accordingly?

Some students are more interested in one facet of taxidermy than others. We urge them to participate in the lectures and mount a simple trophy for experience so they will be familiar with the process. They can then complete more specimens in their area of interest.

I’m not very artistic. Do I have to be an artist to be a taxidermist?

The business of taxidermy is comprised of a multitude of skills and procedures that can be learned by anyone willing to put forth the time and effort. Sometimes the artistic student will excel in habitat design and more creative poses but being artistic is definitely not a prerequisite to being a good taxidermist.

Is there any sort of licensing I need to be a taxidermist?

NWIST will assist with the state and the US Fish and Wildlife requirements. Students will receive training in the laws and restrictions which will apply to these licenses.

Advanced Classes

Our Spring session (April-June) now offers an advanced class along with the regular curriculum. The enrollment for the Spring class will consist of only 6-8 students allowing time for the advanced instruction. The advanced portion is for individuals with previous taxidermy experience wishing to take their skill to a higher level and offers more individualized training as the student delves into the area in which he/she most desires to expand their knowledge. Advanced students are not restricted to the normal specimen package but are able to choose their package according to the desired area in which they wish to excel. (The only stipulation is that the specimens selected are able to be completed in the allotted period of time.) Some of the advanced training will be done outside the normal classroom hours. There will be an extra $2,000.00 charge for the advanced training. (There will be no extra charge for the students enrolled in the normal spring session. These students will benefit from the smaller classroom size and the higher level of instruction.) See the Advanced Class insert for more information or call for more details.

Personal Attention

At the Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy we feel personal attention is of the utmost importance in learning. In order to achieve this, we provide at least one instructor for every six students! With this instructor to student ratio, we can provide excellent personal attention. This ensures quality mounts while at school and personal guidance necessary to be able to continue high quality work independently at home.

An Added Bonus...

The Matuska Taxidermy Supply Company began in 1994 in an effort to provide students at the Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy with the finest supplies available at an affordable price. New innovative supplies are being developed on a regular basis and the Matuska Taxidermy Supply Company stays abreast of these developments to enable us to bring state of the art products and technology to not only our customers but also our students.

Specimen Selection

The Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy takes great care in planning a student’s specimen needs and gearing each program toward the game native to the student’s business area. Western students may be encouraged to concentrate on mule deer, elk, antelope and trout while eastern students may be more concerned with whitetail deer, black bear, turkey, quail and warm-water fish.

Technical Support

In the months following graduation, questions will arise that sometimes only experience can answer. The Northwest Iowa School of Taxidermy will provide technical assistance to all students. If problems occur, we are as close as your phone. Give us a call and let our support team walk you through your situation step by step. Our guidance doesn’t stop at graduation!

In Preparation for School We encourage our students to select specimens for mounting that are in good, fresh condition. (Avoid road kills at all cost!) All specimens should have a tag attached stating your name, complete address, type of specimen, date and state in which it was taken. Upon school enrollment, informational tags will be sent from the school at no charge.

Students bringing specimens should care for them in the following manner:

FISH – Wrap fish in a wet terry cloth towel, place in a plastic bag and freeze solid. The towel prevents the skin from drying out and freezer burning as well as forming a protective layer around the fish. BIRDS – Place birds carefully in a plastic bag, remove air from bag and place a tie around the mouth of the bag. Lay so all feathers remain flat. Birds to be mounted should be mature and undamaged. Check the tail feathers as well as the neck area for pin feathers. (Pin feathers are a sure sign of an immature specimen and another specimen should be selected.) GAMEHEADS – Most gameheads will be mounted in the full shoulder style. For this mount it is necessary we have all of the skin up to the front legs. Remove the skin from the carcass up to the head. Sever the spinal column at the base of the skull and leave the head intact. Place complete hide with head and antlers attached into a garbage bag and secure top. Freeze solid. MAMMALS – Specimens to be life-size mounted should be placed in a plastic bag and frozen as soon as possible. Upon arrival, careful measurements will be taken to assure an accurate fit.

What NOT To Bring

Bring only legal specimens. Any specimens brought which are threatened or endangered will be discarded. All wildlife must have been harvested during legal hunting seasons by lawful means. DO NOT bring song birds of any kind DO NOT bring waterfowl taken outside of the set season in your state DO NOT bring any hawks or owls DO NOT bring any specimens illegal to possess in your state DO NOT bring specimens with irrepairable damage Should you have any questions concerning specimens you can or cannot bring please feel free to call our office or contact your local game warden.

Visits

We encourage you to make a personal visit to our school to gain a better understanding of our program. It is imperative that you know what you are getting in return for your investment. Call ahead so you can be assured of prompt attention on arrival. If a personal visit is not possible, feel free to call our staff for more detailed information.
