Welcome Brethren! I am very excited to be a member of the First Masonic District and our Fraternity. I often wonder what I would do without it. One thing for sure, I would have missed the opportunity to meet all of you. The Fraternity offers us many different avenues to pursue from the time that we are raised. There is something for everyone depending on your interests. No matter what those interests are; they start with fellowship and getting to know one another. I have learned more about myself, life, and the Fraternity from great men that I look forward to seeing each month, the Brethren. I hope that you also find being with our Brethren rewarding and exciting.
Keep working together with pride and honesty and there is nothing that can stop this Fraternity from being the best organization in the world. I truly believe that this world needs our Fraternity now more than ever. If we all lived and looked at life through the values it teaches us, how much different would this world be?

The history of PA DeMolay is fairly vast. Hundreds of thousands of young men have called a PA Chapter home. Some of those DeMolays went on to lead ordinary, uneventful lives, filled with service and love. Others preferred the spotlight, fulfilling a deep desire to affect the world around them; of the latter, one stands out to me as a DeMolay worthy of emulation. Bro. Kendig C. Bare, colloquially known as “KC” by his Brothers and friends, was an early member of Lancaster Chapter. Born on November 5, 1913, KC was at the perfect age for DeMolay when Lancaster Chapter was founded in October of 1928. It is an interesting side note that Lancaster Chapter was instituted in a ceremony overseen by someone you should all know about – “Dad” Ralph C. Minehart, Founder of PA DeMolay. KC was an active member of Lancaster Chapter, rising to the position of Master Councilor in September, 1932. His biggest goal was to have Lancaster Chapter publish a better newsletter. He quickly assigned a committee and got to work. The Chapter published the first issue of the Sentinel during KC’s term, with 6
host the event. KC put in hundreds of hours of work to arrange all of the details for the Conclave. Everyone was very impressed with the event Lancaster Chapter put on. Riding high on this success, Bro. Bare made a fateful decision. He would run for State Master Councilor.
his older Brother, Howard, a PMC himself, at the helm as Editor. When KC completed his term of office, he took over the Editor’s desk and retained it for the next 14 months. For his work on the Sentinel, KC was honored as the first “DeMolay of the Year” for Lancaster Chapter. However, honors and awards did not satiate Bro. Bare’s appetite for service. In 1933, Lancaster Chapter undertook a major campaign to host the 1934 Conclave of the Associated Chapters of the Order of DeMolay in Pennsylvania. Bro. Bare headed up this committee, which did indeed win the bid to
At this time in PA DeMolay history, one did not have to serve in another elected office to be State Master Councilor. While it was unusual for someone to jump straight to the top, it can and did happen, mostly thanks to politics. Think of the situation; Bro. Bare just arranged and hosted a very successful Conclave. Everyone around the Commonwealth knew of the success of the Sentinel, his newsletter. Finally, the vote was taking place in his home town, where several members of Lancaster Chapter could be mustered to bolster his vote count. All of these things combined to help KC get elected State Master Councilor for the 1934 – 1935 term. KC’s claim to fame in that office was the development and publishing of the Keystone Crusader, the

first newsletter of the Order of DeMolay in Pennsylvania, which is still printed today. Initially published out of Kendig’s home in Lancaster, the “Key Cru,” as it is sometimes called today, has been the main channel for distributing DeMolay information in Pennsylvania for close to eighty years. So well liked was Bro. Bare, that, upon completion of his term as SMC, at the age of 21, he was inducted into the DeMolay Legion of Honor. The Degree of Chevalier had not yet been developed, so the Legion of Honor was used to show the Order’s enthusiasm for Bro. Bare’s hard work and dedication.
being called to the service of his country to help win the Korean War. He served at the rank of Captain with the United States Army. In his absence, his older Brother, Howard, took over the reins of the City while his Brother performed his service. Upon his return to the States, Kendig was re-instated as Mayor and would serve another full term, before retiring from that office in 1958. The City of Lancaster honored Bro. Bare by naming its public safety building after him, which still stands today. (Currently a Clothing Boutique)
Kendig Bare was a paragon of service, both to his community and to Pennsylvania DeMolay. He passed away in 1989, leaving one heck of a legacy. Throughout his life he showed dedication, patriotism, and his ability to communicate well. All of these traits are something every DeMolay should try to master, ever keeping in mind the example of Bro. Bare.
KC’s service to DeMolay was far from over, however. He would go on to serve on the Advisory Council for Lancaster Chapter for a number of years. He was later elevated to the rank of District Deputy for the area surrounding Lancaster, where he would administer and assist several other Chapters. Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate much information on Kendig’s personal life following his DeMolay career. We know he remained a life-long resident of Lancaster, but we do not have record of his profession, outside of one important distinction. He was married, but had no children. At the age of 37, in 1950, Kendig was elected as the Mayor of the City of Lancaster. He managed to serve only nine months, before 7

Educational Spotlight: Seven THE NUMBER SEVEN HAS MANY MEANINGS AND USES INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE LODGE. COMPOSED BY BROTHER JAMES M. STEPHENS, HGA
The number seven can be found in-use, throughout many aspects of the lodge. Take a look around your lodge room, how many of these signs can you identify? One of the first and most obvious of these is noticing the sashes on officer’s aprons have seven tassels. Take a further look around the lodge, you will discover that the wands of the deacons are seven feet long. The Worshipful Master uses seven raps of a gavel to command order in the lodge. one rap calls to order, two brings up the officers, three calls up the brethren, and one seats them all. The apron is comprised of two perfect figures a rectangle and a triangle. The number of sides is four plus three for a total of seven. A brother goes through seven chairs before becoming the Worshipful Master of his lodge. Pursuivant, two masters of ceremony, two deacons, Junior Warden and Senior Warden. A seven point star was used as part of the Grand Master’s collars until 1871. The star was intended to represent the seven liberal arts.1 There are seven working tools; trowel, plumb, level, square, compass, gauge, and common gavel. 8
Seven brethren are required for a lodge; three master, two fellowcraft and two entered2 Symbolism behind the number seven includes some of the following: There are seven days of the week. Seven planets of antiquity. Seven years building the temple of Solomon, the festival lasted seven days and the candlestick in the tabernacle had seven branches.3 The seven liberal arts are divided into two groups. The quadrivium is arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy. The trivium is grammar, rhetoric, and logic.4 Some items of note: A triangle over a square is symbolic of sky (triangle) over the earth (square).5 This maybe reflected in the configuration of the apron.

The First Masonic District’s Relay for Life Team, Freemasons for a Cure, was proudly represented at the 2019 Relay for Life of Lancaster. Members from the District were present to take a few laps around the track in memory of those lost to cancer, and to show our support in helping raise funds for a cure. As with every year, the girls (and families) of Bethel 15 came out to show their support and help assist the district team in raising over $500 for the cause. Abraham C. Treichler Lodge No. 682 Free and Accepted Masons, sponsored the eighth annual Honor Roll Challenge Night as a reward to those members of Elizabethtown DeMolay who finished the 2019 school year with a 3.0 or better grade point average. Held on Sunday, June 23rd, six members of Elizabethtown DeMolay were treated to a night of food and fun at Ichiban Japanese Steak and Seafood Restaurant in Lancaster. The scholars, dining on appetizers like sushi and sashimi, entrees of seafood, steak, and chicken represented five different school districts in south-central Pennsylvania. Gabriel Anderson, who completed the 7th grade at the Elizabethtown Area Middle School; Jacob Beers, a 2017 graduate of Lower Dauphin High School and Junior at West Chester University; Mason Barrick, who will be an 8th grader at Lower Dauphin Middle School; Jonathan Curran, who will be a Sophomore at Lampeter-Strasburg High School; Martin Stoner, who will be a Sophomore at Solanco High School; and Connor Vogelsong, who will be a Junior at Elizabethtown Area High School. One of the principal teachings of the Order of DeMolay is appreciation, respect and support for the public schools and the importance of education in the life of young men. Schoolbooks are prominently displayed in all formal meetings and ceremonies of the organization as a reminder of this bulwark of the organization.

Job’s Daughters Grand Sessions 2019 GRAND SESSION IS THE ANNUAL CONVENTION OF PENNSYLVANIA JOB’S DAUGHTERS, WRITTEN BY ALYSSA KLINE, MISS JOB’S DAUGHTER OF PENNSYLVANIA,
Grand Session is the annual convention of Pennsylvania Job’s Daughters, what goes on at session you might ask yourself… Well it is three packed full days of formal opening, Grand Bethel Installation, Grand Guardian Council Installation, Music competition and of course fun activities, food, awards, sisterhood, very little sleep and memories that will last a life time. This year Grand Session was held at the Red Lion Hotel in Harrisburg, June 21st, 22nd, until June 23rd. Many arrived Thursday to set up and get everything ready for check in on Friday morning. Practices were held on Friday morning and afternoon and it was pool time for those of us who weren’t in practice. Friday evening was Formal Opening time and several Masonic bodies were in attendance. Grand Master S. Eugene Herritt and Mrs. Sally Herritt were in attendance, Grand Master Herritt presented awards to the Daughters for service, membership. At this time two adults were recognized for truly outstanding adult leaders of the youth programs and they were 12
awarded the Hodegos, which is from the Greek word meaning “a leader, a guide, an instructor of the inexperienced.” Mr. Roy Miller, Bethel 15, Elizabethtown and Angie Chappell, Bethel 1, York were the recipients. Following Formal Opening was Grand Bethel Installation, where the Daughters of the commonwealth were installed into their new offices for the 20192020 year. Corrie Baker, Bethel 15 Elizabethtown was installed as Grand Bethel Honored Queen. Saturday morning we headed to Hershey park for a fun filled day! We returned to enjoy a formal din-
ner followed by Grand Guardian Council Installation. Mrs. Deborah Jones – Thomas, Bethel 19, Mechanicsburg was installed as Grand Guardian and Mr. Roy Miller, Bethel 15, Elizabethtown was installed as Associate Grand Guardian. I am proud to say we have a full core of officers to lead our Grand Guardian Council this year. Sunday morning, closed our session with a church service.

Installation of Officers, June 2019 THE ELIZABETHTOWN CHAPTER, ORDER OF DEMOLAY HELD ITS INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS ON SATURDAY JUNE 22ND.
On Saturday, June 22nd, Todd Schwartz, Jr., was installed as Master Councilor of Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay. Todd is 15 years old and lives in Lebanon. His Dad is a Past Master Councilor of the former Hershey Chapter; and his Grandfather is a Past Advisor for Hershey Chapter and the current Assistant Advisory Council Chairman for Elizabethtown Chapter. Some of the events in Todd’s term include: the Pennsylvania DeMolay Convention in July; the Key Man Leadership Training Conference in August; the Dime Toss Fund-raiser at the Elizabethtown Fair from August 19th through 24th – please stop by and throw some dimes to help the Chapter raise funds!; and the annual Chapter Family Holiday Banquet on December 8th. Prospect Parties, planned to show young men who are interested in DeMolay, are schedule for August 17th at Laser Dome; September 28th at Sky Zone; October 26th a Halloween Party (location to be announced later); November 16th a Field Day of Outdoor Fun (location also to be announced later.) Also serving in elected positions for the Chapter are Martin Stoner, Senior Councilor, of Quarryville; Jonathan Curran, Junior Councilor, of Lancaster; Jacob Beers, Treasurer, of Elizabethtown; and Patrick Eiswerth, Scribe, of Enola. Elizabethtown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, is a fraternal organization for young men between the ages of 12 and 21 years of age for young men from Elizabethtown, Holtwood, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lititz, Lower Dauphin, Manheim, Middletown, Mount Joy, Quarryville, and Lebanon areas.
Through its varied activities, the Order of DeMolay teaches the principles of good citizenship, fraternalism, and leadership. A basic Chapter program includes public speaking, athletics, social functions, travel, and civic service projects. Elizabethtown Chapter is sponsored by Abraham C. Treichler Lodge No. 682 Free and Accepted Masons, Corinthian Royal Arch Chapter No. 224 and Lancaster Commandery No. 13 Knights Templar.
